176 hours in, still having fun.

Am I the only one who's never died to a zed? I've died due to pretty much every other hazard in this game, but never a zombie. They are a major pain in the ass before you find yourself a proper melee weapon, but you can always sprint away. I love how agressive they are now, but as long as you keep moving in circles they rarely land a blow, took down a group of 5 without a scratch yesterday.
-
The zombies are awesome now! Really agressive, you cant put your axe on your back at all when in cities.

It's funny, when they take a while between updates everyone are like "Omg! It's been weeks, we've given you shitloads of money, where's the damn patch? Waaaah, waaaaah! Just release it already!" and every god damn time a patch is released the forums fill up with comments on how its crap and broke the game. Granted, I haven't played at all lately, so the game might very well be unplayable at the moment.
-
Are we going to get the patch next week then?
Iarfur replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
Yea, I did, but my rant wasn't really aimed at you, since experimental has been f*cked lately I've been spending more time reading the forums, and the amount of asshats is incredible. So I'm sorry, you didn't deserve that, the rest of the forum does. -

It'll be released when it's working, not even the guys hammering out the code knows, so why should we bother guessing? This forum seems to be filled with spoiled brats, incapable of understanding that the developers can and will run into problems, have to spend days and weeks going through their code to find out where they f*cked up. When I bought the game I didn't see 'em promising huge updates every week. We'll get what we get when we get it, until then, enjoy what you already have. -
Yea, still laggy as hell, and the two hardcore servers I have access to seem stuck in perpetual night.. oh well.
-
I haven't seen much whining in the forums, so I'm starting to worry, are you guys able to play on experimental? Sure, characters have been reset and there's very few servers to connect to, but I cant seem to play properly. I lag and rubberband like crazy, running down the road is a pain in the ass because I keep bouncing back all the time.

I've got some 160 hours logged so far, most of them have been really fun, that's a hell of a lot more than I get out of 90% of the games I've bought to date. Standard playthrough of a game is 15 or so hours, some as much as 40, so even if they scrap the game completely today I'd say I'd gotten my moneys worth. Who the hell are you to demand a faster rate of updates? When you bought the game was there some agreement on how often they'd come? Do you think the developers are actively trying to f*ck you over for shits and giggles by working as slow as they can? ' No? So stfu, get back in there and put a bullet through somebodys skull and be happy whenever they add a new hat or useless firearm. The game is fun today, everything they add is a bonus (well, except for the horrible desync and rampant character resets they added to experimental lately, could have done without that).

Experimental Servers Are Having PRoblems, Here's How to Switch Back To Stable
Iarfur replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
Yea, and I'm guessing that most people who figure out how to actually switch to experimental can figure out how to switch back... But yea, experimental hasn't been kind to me today. -
Same places as you'd look for other guns, found them in military/civilian buildings that normally spawn weapons. You really want a 30 round mag or two for the ruger, takes a few shots to bring down a zombie, as for the pistol... weeell, maybe my aim is off or maybe its more or less useless, went through a lot of ammo to bring down a group of the undead and was still bleeding when the dust settled.
-
I've run into the same problem lately, two rifles, two handguns, lots of ammunition but still forced to use my axe in an encounter because nothing matches. I'm not complaining tho, I hope this game goes in a direction of less guns and more improvised weapons, I dont mind if guns are relatively easy to come by, as long as you've got a snowballs chance in hell of finding the right ammo.

I've got over 150 hours played so far, never got my character wiped due to a bug (close call once, playing with a friend and we were kicked off a server, logged back in as fresh spawns, I immidietly logged off and tried a diffrent server and got my character back, my friend who ran around a bit and looted was stuck with his new character), never glitched through a wall, never been killed by a ladder, I've died due to stairs once, running down them I fell and died, but then again, you shouldn't run down stairs slick with zombieguts. So I've got a serious problem taking people who bitch about these things seriously, you must be doing something wrong.

The ruger 10/22 comes in a bunch of diffrent variations, one of them being the Sporter. I've tried it out a bit, found 2 30 round magazines pretty fast and went through them killing zombies. Nice ironsights, took 1-2 headshots to bring down a zed, first bullet always made them fall to the ground, quiet (but still attracted attention from the undead). Also found a Colt 1911 but unfortunately no magazine, got myself killed before being able to try it out.

Need Medical Assistance in DayZ SA ? Find Your medic here!
Iarfur replied to TMWMarijke's topic in General Discussion
Too few know their bloodtype for that to be safe, unless you find an universal donor or three, then you can stock up on blood. -
I'll try to scoop up some next time I run into another player.

The Wisdom and Lessons of DayZ So Far...
Iarfur replied to pacific_coast's topic in General Discussion
Really? From where I'm sitting this game seems to evolve towards the wants of zombie fanboys and survivalist roleplayers rather than thos wanting another call of duty deathmatch. They keep promising more and tougher zombies, adding crafting, weather, disease, nerfing military weapon spawns etc etc. -
So the crafting system is being worked on and expanded, we'll soon see bows, spears and similar weapons and I was wondering if there's any chance of primitive blacksmithing being in the game? Wouldn't need to be too complex, add scrap metal as a lootable resource, with a hammer, pliers and a fireplace you'd be able to craft some basic equipment/weapons. Add scrap metal to the fire, and if you have the right tools you get the option to create a few items - knife, spearhead, arrowheads etc. And before you start complaining, I know that blacksmithing is a complex trade that take years to perfect, that a fireplace and a rock is a poor substitute for a proper forge, but really, any idiot can heat up a piece of rebar and hammer it untill it takes an edge, sure, it wont be as good as blade you buy, but it'll get the job done. Making crafting resources relatively easy to come by, real manufactured tools/weapons in working condition rare, will lend a nice post apocalyptic feel to the game, not to mention making players really happy when they finally find a fireaxe and can trade away their homemade spear.
-
I've got more than 100 hours logged so far, I've broken my legs twice, once in combat, once from falling off the stairs in a barn. People just need to be a bit more carefull. Never died from a ladder, never glitched through a wall.

Played on experimental for the first time yesterday, some 50 people on the server and it had probably been up for some time because lord allmighty, it was picked clean, I honestly thought I'd starve to death for the first time. And I loved it. I'd made a lucky find and gotten myself a fireaxe, other players I ran across tended to be as bad off as me or worse, had cannibalism been an option I'd probably tried taking down somebody who had a worse melee weapon than me. Because it was like a swarm of locusts had swept the island, every door open, every town looted, the NE airfield was totally empty, not even a scope in ruined condition. You cant imagine the pure joy of finding a house that had been overlooked, the bag or rice and two pieces of fruit nearly had me in tears, I grabbed it and quickly ran out into the woods, hid in a bush and greedily gulped it all down, my head constantly spinning, convinced that someone would come and take it from me. Made it as far as Vybor before logging off, still everything looted, still hadn't found a gun, but atleast some more food and better clothes. It was awesome, it's what I want DayZ to be. I know that some people complain that it's too hard to find food, weapons, etc, but truth be told, once you get to know which places spawn what and which places to avoid, it's really too damn easy to gear up. I usually find myself decked out in everything I need/want within one-three hours of playing, after that I basicly head to elektro to find someone that will manage to take me down, or head to the coast to find some fresh spawn to bodyguard. I keep hearing rumors of improvised weapons replacing the military ones, that in time we'll be killing each other with spears and bows rather than m4's and mosins, and I cant wait. I'd love to stalk someone armed with a sharpened stick, to hunt rabbits with a slingshot, to get excited when I find a shell for my shotgun. In the current apocalypse everyone and their brothers are dressed in head to toe military gear, with enough ammo to start a war and all the food they can possibly need before they finally get shot. In -MY- apocalypse half starved, dirty lunatics fight in the street with sticks and broken bottles over half a can of beans.

I've played around with crafting bows as well, I've yet to manage crafting a proper, traditional bow (got some pieces of suitable wood drying myself), but I have made some allright ones out of skis, pvc pipe, copper tubing, strips of plywood and green wood, I wont claim that any of these had even close to the power or accuracy of the english longbows of old, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to get shot by either of them. As for the realism of it all, this is a game and it does seem every character spawns with an awfull lot of knowledge, your average civilian would have some problems handling an m4, hooking up a blood bag and soon enough - gutting an animal and getting the meat. We'll just have to assume that every survivor is Dave Canterbury.
-
Gimme a bunch of branches, a shoelace and some ducttape and I'll make a bow in ten minutes, granted, I wont be able to kill anything beyond three legged rabbits with it, but still. As for the skill to use a bow properly, weeeeell, I'm sure lag and desync will sort that out, as it stands now I can empty a full 60 round mag into someone and hit nothing but scenery. The crafting system is there, and being worked on, I love the improvised backpacks (I've been known to ditch hunter backpacks once I've got the needed materials for one), but there's -so- much more you could do with it. Stick and knife - spear, stick, knife and duct tape - awesome spear, stick, hatchet, rope - bow, steel pipe, chainsaw and piece of chain - flail of doom! The possibilities are endless. I really dislike the fact that there's really only one option for a melee weapon - the fireaxe, with the splitting axe the poor mans fireaxe, all other melee weapons being a waste of an equipment slot. The fists of fury are too damn effective, and all melee weapons aside from the axes are too weak, untill this changes we wont see any variation in what people strap to their back. I'm not saying remove guns, lord no, just make them hard to come by, and ammunition even more so, this is the apocalypse people, there shouldn't be fully loaded assult rifles just laying around waiting to be picked up. As for the server hopping, weeeell, not sure about how theyre gonna sort that one out, I read that loot will be distributed in a diffrent way, that you cant be sure that you'll find that assult rifle you want when you hop to the airfield, maybe it spawned in a barn outside Pulkovo instead. If they just make the sweet loot stupidly rare and have it spawn in diffrent places, server hopping will net you nothing.

I was 'robbed' yesterday in Berezino, had recently spawned, had found myself a fireaxe, backpack and some clothing but not much else, server was pretty much picked clean. Two semi geared guys with nasty looking rifles come up to me, tell me to get on my knees and then handcuff me, I tell them I've got buggerall but that theyre welcome to whatever's in my backpack. One guy looks around in my pack, they then tell me that theyre sorry that they have no keys for the handcuffs, that I'll have to break free myself. Took me a while to figure that one out, (they tried to help me with it, but turns out none of us had been handcuffed before), by the time I got around to looking in my backpack they were long gone, and to my surprise I find two new boxes of ammo and a compass in there. Reverse robbery :P

This has happened to me too, I'm starting to wonder if there's some servers that are incorrectly listed. Several times I've ended up in a regular server even tho it clearly said 'hardcore' in the list, and no, I'm not misclicking, I sort servers by type, not players/time/whatever.

Currently carrying both the m68 for the m4 and the mosin longrange scope, both pristine. The kicker? I dont even use scopes, currently wielding the b95 and loving it, I figure I'll give them to the first friendly I run into, hopefully they get ruined if I'm gunned down before that.
