So I was at NWAF one a night time server where the Gamma glitch clearly did not work. (I have clouds turned off for performance) and I had my gamma and brightness maxed out. The server was pitch black because there was no moon up. So as I am running in the general direction I need to from my compass, I hear shots ring out at me. A couple more shots, and I'm dead. Now I cannot see a single thing at the moment, no flashlight on, It is so dark that I can only make out the outlines of the trees from the sky. So how in the hell did he see me and take accurate enough shots to kill me? Is the moon somehow client side?? I have noticed that as the moon rises while using the gamma glitch, things go from pitch black to lighter.
-
So here's the thing. If I pop on a night server. I'm going to check to see if the gamma glitch works. If it doesn't, I can just use my compass to run across the map and not worry. If it does work, I'll leave the server. I typically do this after a night of fighting in high risk areas and I need to log out for real life. I come back in, know I'm at NWAF, jump on a low pop and run somewhere to meet up with my friends. Now the thing I am hammering at here, is that according to "how the glitch works", it should be the same across all platforms. So, if it does not work on my computer it should not work on someones elses (I.e. we're adjusting the same settings correct?) I will say that, yes it is very, very dark a night with no light sources. However you still are able to see a few feet infront of you once your eyes adjust. I do hope it get's "fixed", I just don't know how it will without locking gamma and brightness values. These sort of mechanics really break the enjoyment and immersion of playing at night to be honest.

What files do I keep for my character(s) before re-installing windows?

So I am switching over to an SSD for my windows installation, what files from my computer do I need keep to ensure my characters are saved between installations? -
Don't call an M-16 an "Assault Rifle". "Assault" implies that you intend on committing the crime of assault on someone else with that rifle. Assault can be applied to anything if it is used in an assault. For instance, a bat is a bat, a bat used in an assault becomes an assault bad. If you want to call it anything, call it a semi-auto rifle, a rifle, a gun, an ANYTHING other than an "assault" rifle. In reality the M-16/M-4/AR-15 is a "5.56mm, magazine fed, gas operated, air-cooled, semiautomatic, handheld, shoulder fired weapon." I was in the Corps too, but I think a stark difference does need to be made between a clip (stripper clip) and a magazine. Especially when you have both readily available. A clip for an M16 is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH different than a magazine for an M16. If I need a magazine for an M16, but I ask for a clip I am SOL getting rounds down range. To put it in the games perspective, if someone asks for a magazine I'm going to give them a magazine for the M4; conversely, if someone asks for a clip I'm going to give them an SKS stripper clip. The reason words exist is to describe things and communicate ideas to another person. If I call the color red, blue you would be completely confused when I say "hey he's behind that blue building!" When that RED building is no where near the guy trying to kill us. We define words so that everyone knows that they mean, if you start changing that definition, no one will understand what you mean.

So Rocket has mentioned adding Rag dog physics to the game. What do you want to see with respect to "rag-dolling" or does it even NEED to be implemented? I think it would be interesting to see melee hits actually cause some sort of rag doll affect as the knocked out player goes down, I am worried about ridiculous effects of getting shot though. EDIT: Yes I meant "rag doll" not "Rag dog" gotta love swype on phones! I will leave it for pure comedic value though.

What was the longest time your character survived?
fortyeight replied to wuffi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I had a character alive for 9 days (4 to 10 hours of play time a day), then I was mercilessly gunned down in the forest south of Berinzino by a friend with a blurry screen. Although I was not in many fire fights on that character and if I was, I was in an overwatch position. The most battle hardened Character I had was alive for 4 days and survived about 6 long fire fights. I think his kill count was up to 15 bandits killed. Then I was unfortunately shot in the head near Cherno. You can survive indefinitely raiding smaller towns on very low population server. I think the true survival test is how many firefights you can get involved in per day and survive. -
What sort of player are you on DayZ? *QUIZ*

5 meters is very approximately 16 feet, so about a story and a half-ish. 15 meter is approximately 49 feet. Falling off the second story of a building may break your bones. Jumping from the roof will kill you.

Since all I have seen on the forums are people bitching about the frame rate issue and posting some fixes I am going to report my findings on the matter: TL;DR will be at the end so you can just scroll down now if you want. Computer Specs(To avoid posting an entire DxDiag): OS: Windows 7 Graphics Card: Geforce GTX 560 Ti Motherboard: MSI MS-7758 CPU: Intel i5-3750K @ 3.40 GHz, Quad Core RAM: 8 gigs Testing Conditions: Several Areas around the map - both high density and low densityWith people and without peopleThree completely different characters on Regular and Hardcore hivesTwo characters were pre-patch, one character is a fresh spawn.A multitude of different seversNighttime and Daytime testingWith rain and without rainPlaying near small groups (less than three players) to large groups (greater than three players)I do not run fraps in the background, so I cannot give exact frame ratesI run Teamspeak and the DayZ DB map on a second monitor at all timesI only render players about 400m away without the use of a long range scopePlaces and conditions I DID NOT experience any loss of frame rate I have been almost everywhere on the map and have not experienced any frame rate loss. The only place I can confirm that I have not been with a normal frame rate is in Elektro during the daytime. However, when I am not experience any frame rate loss I am "alone" or far removed from other players. I have experienced completely normal frame rates during rain and in fully un-looted cities to include Elektro at night. Both of my pre-patch characters had nearly identical load outs except food and cases: Camo Mosin Nagants with Long Range Scopes, Bi-pods, compensators and bayonets. Both we were wearing a green tactical shirt and green cargo pants with a helmet. My fresh spawn character was loaded out completely differently and has no items that are pre-patch. Places and conditions I DID experience loss of frame rate The first place I noticed the frame rate loss was in NWAF. It did not happen immediately but as I met up with people in my clan in the firehouse my frame rate began to drop. Eventually I crashed, along with numerous other people in my clan. The frame rate very quickly deteriorated until windows task manager said that DayZ was not responding. It was raining at this time Later I loaded in and began to move to Vybor to meet up with another group from my clan. As I approached Vybor it began to rain and my frame rate began to deteriorate and I logged out with a truly awful frame rate about 350m from their location. The next day I had moved on top of the apartments at Chapaevsk. While I was providing over watch to my clan mates, I was experience some frame rate loss, but nothing consistent. It seemed to be more of rendering issues and my computer chugging (although I had never experienced that before). I eventually moved down to the south side of the airfield across from the prison to cover a door that bandits were holed up behind. During an hour stand-off I experienced completely normal frame rates with 9 other players at distances of 100m to 300m away from my location. After the engagement was over, I moved into the PD with the rest of my clan and experienced a "slideshow" of DayZ. I began to run away from the prison in the woods and crashed out. I rebooted my computer to find my character dead. No body was found in the woods so I can only assume I fell through the ground and the sever registered me as dead. As a fresh spawn, I geared up and met about 15 clan members in Elektro for an operation to hand out food to fresh spawns. We were located in teams of five in various locations around Elektro. The other two teams were 750m to 1000m away on a 40 population server. When I logged in with my team, my frame rate was fine for about 2 minutes, it then quickly dropped to a slide show and what I can only assume to be 1-5 frames per second. I am convinced that none of the players in my team had flickering items because we had already ditched all of them and I wasn't experiencing any performance issues. And before we logged in, we had all met up on a 0 population night time server to scope out position and to find where we should be embedded, during this time I had 0 frame rate loss and completely normal gaming experience I had pre-patch. Conclusions(TL;DR) The frame rate loss appears to be linked to players within your vicinity but also out of rendering distance. My best guess is players within 1kmThe frame rate loss can be caused by flickering items in the inventoryEven if your character does not possess any items that are flickering it will affect players in the vicinityThe bug seems to happen independent of your location in the gameIt is possible that some new or old item that is spawning is causing this glitch, i.e. the servers are spawning flickering itemsThis is all that I can think of to post in here. I know I am forgetting a few experiences and such. Hopefully we can give enough data and specifics to the Devs, so they can narrow down and find what the actual problem is. I have a hard time believing, one little item not skinning right is draining every bit of processing power my computer has.
-
I'm not totally sure that the bug is only related to a particular item though. I know a friend had an Old Testimate Bible that was flickering and causing the bug. I have been in the close proximity of players without an M4 and still had the bug. I'm guessing that there is a very high likelihood of the MP butt-stock being one of the causes. But I hypothesize it is independent of the individual item, just a certain batch of items. The hard part about this bug, is once you can start collecting data on the bug, it's too late and the game starts crashing. That and most people don't want to read out their inventories over teamspeak laboriously. I do know the bug does not affect all computers equally either. Some people just lose a few frames while I am seeing a slideshow of DayZ before crashing. I think the problem may be attributed to people that have bugged items and aren't affected by the bug and people who don't have any of these items and are getting affected by the bug.

I had no idea that the client had registered players with 1km, that was just a best guess considering the entire clan's location from my squads location. Interesting how the power of deduction works!

Meter to yard conversion all ways messes up my estimating skills in this game. I just use Dayzdb map to get a feel for distance if I'm in one location. On the move you can kind of estimate using your scope or zooming in out of iron sights. I think it's a character that is 4 times taller than the diameter of the white circle when zoomed in is about 300m to 400m. Give or take. For the PU scope, a person that is the same height as the horizontal, black bars, is 300m as well.

I couldn't find anything on the search function of this, but why does the Mosin chamber 7.62x51?? 7.62x51 is a NATO round, more commonly known as .308 Winchester. This round is chambered in a lot of civilian hunting rifles, the 240 and M60 machine guns, H&K G3's, and the M14 rifle. This round is not the round that the Mosin Nagant chambers though. The Mosin uses a 7.62x54R round. So, why do they keep having my chamber NATO rounds in my mosin?? For comparison:

Why is the Mosin using the wrong ammo?
fortyeight replied to fortyeight's topic in General Discussion
There is a DEBATE as to whether .308 Winchester and 7.62 NATO are incompatible. The only difference is that .308 Win has a HIGHER chamber pressure than 7.62 NATO. This is the same debate as to whether 5.56 and .223 Remington are compatible. The G-3 may be the exception, but most modern firearms are compatible with both. I simply put .308 Winchester as a familiar civilian round. Look man, a ten-thousandth of an inch difference is not going to destroy your rifle. That is well below the tolerances of the rifle and EXTREMELY below the tolerances of reloading ammunition. Go price check a ten-thousandth of an inch micrometer for me please. The real issue is the fact that older surplus firearms were specifically designed for the lower chamber pressure and CAN be damaged by firing a .308. This is an off-topic mute point though. I own a Mosin manufactured in 1942 and the 54R round pictured is definitely what it chambers. Okay thanks for the actual responses. I was just curious to know if the Dev's google'd something and inserted the wrong description or something. -
Fix The North West Airfield (Nwaf) [Civilianize]
fortyeight replied to alaskafish (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Generally speaking, large international airports are usually located away from dense population centers. Minus a few examples (I'm thinking of San Diego airport but there are more). The reason for this, is they DRASTICALLY lower housing values because of the loud of jet engines constantly going by. Take SEATAC International. It was built to be between Seattle and Tacoma, but the urban sprawl has popped up around it, leading to almost a ghetto near the airport. If you want to find hookers to low-life people, it's near the airport. The map we play on is roughly 15.17 km x 15.17 km (If they 230 sq.Km figure is correct). NWAF is 10km from elektro, as the crow flies, Using the posted 40kph speed limit signs, it would take ~15 minutes to DRIVE from elektro to NWAF. Pretty reasonable driving distance considering it takes me a 45 minutes to get to SEATAC. Honestly, I really like this idea of spicing NWAF up. Currently it just seems like a big field with tarmac and some hangers. It looks a lot like a giant blank slate begging for some decor. It is true the Balota and NEAF are far to small for international traffic. I'm sure a Boeing 737 could land on the air strip, but it's really inefficient to only be able to land one plane, load and take off.at a time. Honest opinion though, the civilian ATC shouldn't contain weapons or military gear. At most it should contain food (employee break room), electronics (radios, flashlights, batteries) and melee weapons. I could see a pistol from security guards, although I have never been in a real ATC, so I don't even know if they keep TSA agent's in the ATC. I just don't see breaking into an international airport, running up the ATC and finding some military uniforms, an M4 and an LBV. NWAF was a shared international and military airfield, put 2 ATC's in it, one for civilian traffic and the other for military traffic. -
So America Must Have Had A Decent Presence In This Game
fortyeight replied to Deathlove's topic in General Discussion
Okay, the UN doesn't just "impose sanctions." The UN peace keeping forces are usually volunteered by different countries to "keep the peace" in what ever war torn, ravaged, genocidal country. In a pandemic like this, which lets face it, a zombie outbreak WOULD be reported as wide spread rioting and killing. Chances are, a UN peace keeping force was dispatched and was quickly eaten. This force can consist of a lot of other countries. I find it less like for NATO to interfere into Russian land, as Russia is not a member of NATO and NATO entering a non-NATO country would be viewed as an act of war. (Sorry for all the NATO's). Seeing as there aren't US Army bodies littered everywhere, I'm guessing American's there were advisers to the situation, likely officers, to help what ever UN peace keeping force came in. Then they were swiftly eaten. FYI the UN is very lucrative for poor countries because they outfit the peace keeping force with boots, utilities, flak jackets and kevlars. A lot of African countries to peace keeping operations to outfit their armies at low cost. -

The army actually has this "backward" flag on all of their ACU's. I think it's supposed to designate that the flag is flying to your back; i.e. you are always charging forward into the fight. Keep in mind that is just a Marines perspective. I'm sure google has a multitude of answers for this question though. Army uniforms will always have the stars closest to the soldiers chest though. Keep in mind, in any sort of slow developing apocalypse, NATO/UN is going to attempt to intervene. Chances are the USA doesn't like zombies much, so Russia was stop number one. Really though, I think this game is just Russia on a normal day. That place is crazy!
