Regarding the Subject of Building and Construction in Dayz.
Spart248 posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Regarding Sandbags&Barbed Wire As an avid Dayz fan, I have played and enjoyed it very much for the past month and a half. Along with playing, I have also watched many interviews with Rocket and have seen him talk about building and construction in any of them. When regarding Barbed Wire and Sandbags, he seemed fairly put down by how the community used them. In case you are not aware of how these items are currently used, try going into the Firehouse in Cherno on a server with 30+ people. They are used as barricades and nuisances to other players. One way to describe there use is that of "grief" rather than creativity and contructivity. However, it seems that Rocket has expected these items to be used in a constructive manner and is now judging the idea of Base Building on this response by the community. I would like to say, specifically to him and others who share his seeming judgement, that it would be unfair to judge the idea of Base Building and how players would react when given Base Building tools by the reaction to Sandbags and Barbed Wire. The reason being that Barbed Wire and Sandbags are not nearly enough to get a creative response by the community in regards to building bases / playing more group-friendly. Of course, I may also be wrong, in which case I hope you correct me, because I only draw conclusions from interviews and other indirect sources. It is not quite easy to explain why, but the best analogy I can think of right now is: If you put 2 people in a box, each with a 2x4 wooden plank, what do you think they will do? Well, because it is not real life, they will likely kill eachother with the planks. Why? Well, because there is, quite simply, nothing else to do. They can't do anything else with a couple of planks besides use them as a weapon of grief. However, what happens when you give them more? Say nails, carpets, window panes, roofing, etc. Then, rather than killing eachother, they will build. They will build a home, a base, a fort, whatever they will. The fact is that they will not bother killing eachother because that is quite simply not as fun (for the majority of people) as socialising with another while constructing to their liking (you get the idea). The point I am trying to get across is that Sandbags and Barbed Wire are like those wooden 2x4's. They are simply not enough to provoke a creative response by players because there is simply not enough to do with them in the way of creativity compared to grief-ability. Therefore, you should not judge the ability and willingness of players to be creative and cooperative when given the correct tools by the response you have gotten from Sandbags and Barbed Wire. Now of course I don't actually want carpeting, roofing, etc. added to the game, simply because that is unrealistic. They extra tools given for Base Construction should be along the line of ratty fencing, thin aluminum sheeting (like that on the sheds), etc. (ratty, scavenged themed tools). Therefore, rather than running straight away to ideas like Home Instances where players can build privately with no risk of being griefed or griefing others with tools, you should try implementing more, useful construction tools and see the response of the community. Also, ask people what they would like to see in the way of building and what not, rather than try and come up with construction material ideas on your own because I think it is a concept that has a small "functioning zone" where you need to get the idea real close to perfect for it not to go all damn haywire. Regarding "Underground Building" Another interesting thing I hear often in interviews with Rocket is hints to a concept he refers to as "Underground Building" or something along those lines. Now I am not sure if I am just super-misunderstanding this statement, but it quite literally seems that you want to make people "build" under the ground. Unless I am just misunderstanding, this seems quite ridicuous. I'd imagine this idea goes along with the idea of it being a Home Instance. Now although I can eaily understand why you would want to do this, as it solves many complications from Base Building such as flooding of the map, griefed buildings everywhere, etc. However, I think you should think more about this concept, rather than hastily rush into just doing this "underground building" (and yes, I know that is not what you are doing, but just as a warning). Now unless you have some mastermind plan about how to blend this concept in among the authentism and realism of the game, it will completely make a joke of the authentism that you have worked so hard for. Imagine that: You just had a harrowing journey through Cherno where you met friends, nearly died by bandits, had friends killed by bandits, and had all of these raw emotons flowing through you evoked by the authentic gameplay, all to walk out a mile into the wilderness and press a key to enter your UNDERGROUND house. Now I know it will not be quite as simple as that, but that is the bluntness of the change of feeling that will happen when you proceed to enter your Undergound Home Instance after playing regular Dayz for an hour or so. If you do still plan on following through with this idea, I hope and plead that you elaborate to the community on just how it will work before implementing it because it is a big feature and can make or break the feeling of the game to a fair degree. _________________________________________ What do you guys think? would you like to see these features implemented? If so, how would you to prevent the problems that arise form the? -

Well thanks for clearing that up. But if that is the case, that would mean that unless Rocket plans on switching the map halfway through the beta/alpha phasees, then that means that he must make a good, effective map for the new standalone release. Of course, that would be fantastic, but if he were to try and make a new map, I think he should ask opinions of the community on what they would like to see in it and how because it is a big change and a huge deal. -
Totally lost any faith I had in Rocket/dev team
Spart248 replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
One thing I don't understand is that the only people to bring up the point that Rocket and the dev team are doing this for free is the team themselves. Everyone else uses a petty excuse that it is alpha in order to excuse buggy, unstable updates. If a paid-for game is in alpha and it is buggy, graphically glitchy, and unstable, then you have an excuse to be mad. The Dev is providing you with a partially-broken game that you had to pay for. Just because it is in Alpha does not mean it is an excuse to be constantly coming out with unstable updates. You still paid money for a playable game that the dev is suppose to provide you with. Alpha is no excuse. However, the fact that the mod Rocket has been making is FREE makes a huge fucking difference. I have seen people complain that even though he is doing it free, he should sitll be obliged to make it perfect every step of the way. Have you lost your fucking minds? If someone walks up to you and gives you a copy of Battlefield 3 for FREE, but says the disc is screwed up and only can play half of the maps, do you spit in their face and tell them that if they are going to give something for free that they better give the best thing they can? Yea, maybe if your a fucking ungrateful prick who sits in his basement and whines when his mom refuses to bring your fatass hotpockets. Rocket is that person (not the fatass). Although the mod may not be fucking amazingly fantastic and all you've ever dreamed of right now, that doesn't mean you have the right to stomp all over someone who is trying to make you HAPPY FOR FREE. If you are going to complain and rant and bitch about Rocket putting out a "piece of shit" (as some of you like to phrase it) for FREE, then you have to also sit here and complain about the thousands of useless, pointless, time-wasting Youtube videos that are uploaded everyday for FREE. Now, when the standalone comes out and it costs money, there should and will certainly be a higher standard for the playability of the game, specifically because we are paying for it. Rocket is following the Minecraft Model. It will still go through alpha and beta, fixing bugs and adding features, but the tolerance for game-wrecking graphical glitches will certainly be much lower. And I am sure Rocket and the whole Dayz team knows that. They are not stupid. If they were, they would not make a mod that harbors nearly 1 MILLION players in a few months. Constructive critiscism is all good and fun, even when it seems like you are being a dick, but whining is counterproductive and a waste of people's time. -

How about a DayZ concert of Epicness?
Spart248 replied to Food's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Are you sure you want to do it at Devil's Castle? A bunch of people would have a hard time getting there, including myself (and I really would like to attend). I know oyu said you'd drive everybody there on a bus, but look at it realistically. Chances are somebody is going to destroy the bus 1 way or another along your escort. Maybe host it in one of the closer cities or structures near the coast. -
I would like everybody to know that on Sunday, July 29th, I will be hosting a community gathering. The event will begin, officially, at 4:59pm, however guests are more than welcome to arrive early and mingle amongst. Services will include food, beverages, medical supplies, and live entertainment. Vehicles and vehicular escorts are permitted and can be parked in the surrounding area, respective towards residential properties. If willing, an owner can offer the use of his vehicle in the live event. Any and all guests are welcome to join the event. However, there are requirements for the guests. All guests must have upon arrival , on there personal being, at least 1 military grade firearm with matching ammunition. These may include, but are not limited to, DMR's, M14's, and AK-47's. Guests must have the ability to target appendages on humanoid figures such as the legs from a distance. Accessories such as binoculars, frag grenades, smoke grenades, etc. are not only permitted, but are encouraged to be brought and used once the live event has started. Lastly, any donations of military grade equipment prior to the event are much appreciated and can be made by contacting me. Latecomers will be welcomed, but will likely miss the start of the fun. The event will be hosted on the rooftop of the Elektro Fire Station, nearby of the grocery store, the school, and the church. Don't miss the fun!

Hurr Durr the hourly 1.7.2.2 complaining thread, with a twist

Now we need another thread called the "Hurr Durr the hourly 1.7.2.3 complaining thread, with a twist" -
Please don't ask why he is not making this post, there is just no reason to bother explaining. My friend recently wanted to play DayZ with me after he heard about it and realized how fun it was, so he got Arma 2: CO and ran both game into the first missions (because you need to run both games before playing DayZ) and then installed the Six Launcher. That all went smoothly and he could use the Six Launcher to bring up the DayZ server browser, but when he tried to join a server (and yes, there was room), he got far enough to where it shows the server lobby and the "Receiving Mission File" (or something like that) progress bar. At that point the bar was at 0% and an error message popped up. It was that infamous message that say something like "Bin/Config.Bin/CFGweapons". After pressing "OK" it then cancels out and send him to the Arma 2 OA menu screen. It does this with every server, no matter the population or region, etc. I know this message usually appears for people (myself included), but it usually does nothing, for me at least. I just click it and go on my way. Just to add, he has a very shitty computer and can pretty much only run Arma 2 on the lowest graphical settings in order to achieve no lag. I wasn't sure if it was an installation problem, or if his system is just too shitty to handle DayZ.
