To the cheaters in Electro last night around 9:05 Eastern Time
Demoth replied to Rick1633's topic in General Discussion
The biggest issue I see with them immediately fixing hacking is that as soon as they change around stuff, add stuff and mess with the code, it's going to go right back to being ground zero for hackers (let's use the right term here, actually, they're exploiting). Hackers can actually be a good thing during an alpha and beta, as it allows the dev team to pinpoint weaknesses in their system and close them up before retail. Let's just hope that Rocket actually can program better than the script kiddies because if this game dies from rampant hacking, I'm going to be really sad. Unfortunately, this game takes a lot of time to gear up if you're not server hopping, and losing 9 hours of in-game progress because someone snipes you through 4 buildings because they modified their .pbo file, I'm going to not be able to play. My first death was when I was on the roof of a very tall building and there were no buildings higher. As soon as I heard fire, I dropped prone and surveyed my surroundings.... no one was in sight and the closest structure with any comparable height was well over a kilometer away, and this guy was using an M4 because bullets were raining. Long story short, I got hit in the leg, made a mad dash for the ladder and while halfway down the ladder I got shot in the head. (I was also going into 3rd person and using the free look to scan the floor I was crawling down onto, and he wasn't on that floor. So while it's possible there was a clipping issue, it's also more likely he was using a .pbo hack because he was nowhere to be seen. -
The difference is that in DayZ you actually stand to lose and gain things. I don't know why you would want to play this as a shooter after a stressful and long day at work, but he does and the game supports that and we really don't have a right to say he's wrong.Don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from, but people who are telling you "it's just an Alpha" actually do have a point this time. Working together right now is pointless except to gain protection from other players. Zombies are no threat. So if we lose a lot of KoS'ers and greedy bandits / asshole trolls, all the tension in this game will be gone. I get, from an RP perspective, why it might break immersion to have to form alliances out of game before meeting up in game, but think about this games' setting. If you just walk up and wave, you might get shot over that can of beans and your ammo.., it would happen. You have to RP in this like you would in a society that has collapsed like you would in real life (if you wanted to survive)... approach cautiously and only when you gave the upper hand. For a better understanding of how people would probably interact in this setting, read or watch "The Road". Great book and good movie. Or play "The Last of Us" on the PS3. It's stupid hard to make friends in this setting because everyone is fighting over very limited resources. Once they add in zombies that are a threat and add in resource management, settlement/base building and a way to actually make a self sufficient community through hunting and planting crops, you'll really see the RP start to take off. Right now you should play the game to explore, test and report bugs, exploits and hackers and add feedback to Rocket to help polish the experience for when the game is ready to launch.

I was kind of on your side until you started telling people they should stop playing simply because they're playing in a way you don't like that is supported by the design. The fact that there are people in the game who are indiscriminate killers makes every encounter incredibly tense because you don't know how to trust. It makes the game insanely tense. The type of game you're looking for, where cooperation and constantly positive interactions with others, is not DayZ. You CAN have positive interactions, but this is a game about survival and the ability to lose it all at the drop of a hat. If you are upset that people are playing the game in a design-supported fashion (not cheating, exploiting, glitching) then I think you need to either start understanding the game better, play with friends, or find a new game. Role play will develop in time, but like others have said, zombies are broken and there is very little to do in this game right now outside of exploring, hunting for food and making sure no one kills you.

Until someone pbo hacks and shoots you through several buildings. With absolutely no way to store your most precious loot (yet) and exploits, bugs and hackers all over, people are going to get tired of working for things the hard way only to lose it to people being cheap assholes. And considering everyone I run into is fully decked out in the best gear ever, I'm going to assume they were server hopping, because I doubt I keep running into that one legit decked guy on the server.

It's a negative feedback loop dude, so if you play on a night server or one with day night cycles, it's pretty much mandatory. I don't like to use the gamma trick, but anyone who wants to kill is going to do it, and I'm not going to blindly grope in the dark while XXx360NoScopexXx gets impromptu night vision to precision snipe me while I'm hiding in a bush at midnight. The workaround we have so far is to play on simply 24/7 daylight servers, which is what I do. When they fix the gamma exploit I will be insanely happy, but still skeptical. Something tells me there will always be a work around to give e-peen children the unfair edge over others.

Does anyone have a 3pp:off server with a full day/night cycle?
Demoth replied to valdark's topic in Server Advertisement
Night time is a nightmare with gamma manipulating. Combat and finding people is impossible unless you also mess with the gamma or else you're just setting yourself up to die. I had my gamma up because someone was clearly doing it. I then later ran into someone flash lighting his way down a road and he clearly didn't see me of to the side.... I felt really bad I was being a gamma warrior I simply let him go on his way and the put my gamma back to normal. Well, an hour later and I saw movement down the road. Hid in one of the darkest spots in a house only to have the guy immediate find me and put a precision shot in my face. And that's why I play on 24/7 daylight servers. -
This is an alpha. The reason it's being done is so we can test it and so Rocket can do all the tests they need with the people playing. A private server and all that won't help them. People need to chill and understand why things are being done the way they are. You'll get your private servers and such. For now just let the damn game get built.

What priority are they giving to wall clipping / getting stuck in stuff?
Demoth posted a topic in General Discussion
Currently, logging out of the game is one of the most dangerous things you can do. I constantly keep spawning halfway into the world, stuck in the foundation of a building or stick between walls. What's worse is that the restart button is disabled unless you're unconcious (and even then, it rarely works right). Just curious because I have read a lot of different things about future updates and bugs they are aware of, but I haven't seen anything about this clipping issue. Sometimes it resolves itself i you jump around / lean and prone, but currently I'm stuck between walls in a school and I have to leave the game on until I die of thirst. -
Here's the scenario, helping me out. I'm on a roof of an apartment of Berezino. There is only one other building that tall and I can see no one is on it. I'm in the middle of the roof, but all of the sudden bullets start raining down around me. Alright, I duck, but then I'm shot in the leg.... in the middle of the roof, with no one having a vantage point. It wasn't a Mosin because it was steady M4 fire. Alright, I crawl myself to the ladder, get on the ladder, get halfway down and then I get shot in the back. I was in 3rd person and no one was in the building floor I was coming down.... So is there wall hacking? Was is possibly massive lag? What the hell happened?

Because it's an alpha I try not to get too attached to things. Obviously I'm expecting to die from bugs and glitches, exploits and stupid nonsense. That goes with the territory of playing and testing an unfinished product. But in this game I can't stress enough how important it is to have this stuff sorted out immediately. This game can basically require an insane amount of time investment. Unlike an MMO, or Counter Strike / Call of Duty, getting murdered here means losing everything. Dying to exploits and unfair BS in an MMO can be stressful, but imagine if every time you died you lost your entire character. While some might find that thrilling, no one would play if hacking ran rampant. The closest thing I can compare this to, in terms of investment with the potential to lose it all, was playing Diablo II hardcore. Thing was, your character was always saved on their servers, so if someone cheat-killed you, you could petition to have it looked at and possible get your character back.
-
Don't get me wrong, this IS not unrealistic. It's just that from where I was, and when I went back on an empty server, I can't see where he would have gotten the vantage point to shoot me while I was prone on the roof. The closest crane was well over a half kilometer and he was not facing any window went I was going down the ladder, and it's when I was halfway down the ladder, compeletely unexposed, is when he got me. Just boggling. If it was a PBO, that's really frustrating. Yes yes, it's an alpha, but hackers drove away a HUGE chunk of players from DayZ mod (Obviously it still has a strong following, but if they can't stamp out the majority of them then this game is doomed).

Spawning hungry and thirsty needs to be fixed in some fashion because as it is, every place you spawn has been looted already. I have died numerous times simply because I spent 10 minutes in a town going from one empty house to another and then keeling over. (Or getting killed instantly from a spawn camper with an M4). I'm sorry, but I'll be fine spawning hungry and thirsty when there is at least a good chance of not wasting 10 minutes trying to find a non-looted spot only to drop dead. They can easily place-holder fix this by not spawning you pre-dehydrated until they add in loot re-spawning or a greater variety of spawns points.
-
The biggest dispute with your points is to make the shooting more arcadish. I don't think they want it that way and I'm happy with that. Despite what movies and games show, a lot of rounds in a fire fight don't hit their targets, even in close quarters and those are trained soldiers. That's just how things are unless you're some type of elite special ops unit. Now the movement needs to be seriously tweaked because moving in close quarters is a nightmare even in just shorts and a t-shirt.

Once there are more than, say 2 Mosin Nagat and 3 M4's being the only guns per server and servers can support more than 40 players, you will see a lot of the complaining die down. Not disappear of course, but there will be less incentive to military base rush / server hop when the first people to the bases aren't running the whole show uncontested.

I do have a headset, but like you said I have no way of knowing how well people can hear me with it. On Skype and Ventrillo I'm always told it's hard to hear me.
-
Lack of hand holding is definitely making me obsessed with this game. The potential go lose it all is also why I am so engrossed. I found an M4 (I server swapped, hate me if you will) because I just wanted to really play around with one. Now that I'm all geared out I'm absolutely terrified and always watching my back. I also move VERY slow through towns now because before I got my nice gear, if I died it was just sorta "meh, that sucks". Now that I have an M4 I have something I absolutely do not want to lose. I'm also going to not be a KoS'er because I want to see how badly I'm go I no to screw myself over. I also won't combat log. I admit I did do it once (before I even had any gear) because a group of bandits were clearly using 3rd party voice chat and were perfectly coordinating their cornering of me without any chance of me being able to counter them. Another group did run me down and kill me stealing all my hard earned gear but I could hear them talking and so it felt more fair that I got wasted. On that topic: Does type chatting work? I've been typing to people and they seem to be able to see it because I'll say "come here and turn around, I want to give you something" and they do, but out of the 20+ people I've run into I never see them type anything back and I can't hear them talking.

The game is still in alpha and is missing 80% of stuff. There will be base building and self - sufficient stuff like food growing and hunting later. I understand it might be boring, but understand that you bought the alpha to try out (like a demo) as well as help in development like bug testing and getting tech specs to help optimize the finished product.

You shouldn't even die from falling two stories at full health. Break your legs? Sure. Outright die? Mmmmm.... I too died, however, from slipping off stairs (movement gets very clunky when going up or down things) after falling a meter. Really? Did I twist my ankle and fall onto a spike?! Well, whoever found my body must have been happy as I had an M4...
-
I think Generelleasy basically summed it up better. The issue is that the game is still in alpha and a lot of the guns aren't even in the game yet. Once people have a more reasonable time finding ANY gun then you'll see more interesting encounters at the hoy spots. I am not saying all the best stuff shouldn't be in key high risk high reward places. I was merely agreeing with the OP, or at least some of his points. Once more civ weapons are available then I won't care if military weapons only spawn in military bases at that point.
-
You started off your first post, before I said anything, that the OP was a baby and the game was too hard for those of us who agreed with him.I tried to put in my two cents and you called me stupid off hand. Your follow up post then somehow jumped to the conclusion that I somehow am the only one who agrees with my position and everyone in the world agrees with you. Others here have given very well thought out reasons why they disagree with me and others who feel as I do and I don't take issue with that. Once you add in "you're stupid!!!", then pretty much nothing else you write past that gets read because you've set your tone as someone who is unreasonable. I don't know why some of you take suggestions in a game you didn't create as personal slights. You can explain why something doesn't fit or wouldn't be good without the knee her insult. EDIT: What IS too hard for me is my Galaxy S4 touch screen keyboard. I can't seem to ever hit the right key despite it being bigger than my old iPhone which gave me no issues.
-
When you're being a patronizing dick head, no one is going to break down your argument point by point because you come across as an child who would just ignore the counter point and make further character quips about how we're all babies and cowards for possibly not agreeing with you 100%.

Suggestion - disable VOIP during gameplay
Demoth replied to conan the librarian's topic in Suggestions
If a bunch of silent bandits are coordinating and not speaking then I combat log. "B-b-but 3rd party speak isn't again the rules!!!" And neither is combat logging yet, so two can play at that game. -
Abuse bugs? Server hopping isn't a bug.The issue is that I'm new and right now it's not fun that everyone sits at hot spots decked out in super gear shutting out every new player. If a team of soldiers took refuge in a barn and were overrun, why wouldn't their gear be there? Furthermore, the diversity of weapons is very low right now, so I think increasing gun spawns is needed because 3 guys with guns can effectively shut down an airfield and that's really unfun. Allow people to get reasonably armed so they can have a chance of fighting for resources at the military base instead of a bunch of griefers. Edit: I've noticed that a lot of people here are incapable of being civil and are calling people cowards over a video game. If you don't like suggestions and your response is just ad hominem, please go take your daycare nap because you're not adding anything constructive. I like hotspots and I get a thrill from "losing it all". But the majority of people I've run into acquired the gear they got by airbase looting on low pop servers, and then they camp out spots to ensure no one else gets good gear at those spots... you know what, fine. The majority of fun I have is running and exploring and surviving without a gun and just getting food. This becomes difficult and made me do the low pop server swap for an M4 because everyone I was running into was sniping me or had an M4 and was camping. I was just trying to level the playing field because as a new player it's hard to compete with you guys who played the mod, memorized all the good spots and just endlessly grief all the newbies. Maybe make military gear only spawn in bases, fine. But at least give me a better chance go stumble onto an old hunting rifle or 357 here or there.
-
Read my post and you'll understand why an M4 might spawn anywhere
-
I've been complaining about this too. You need hot spots in the game where the best stuff spawns. It's needed. The issue is that more need to spread out randomly anywhere. Every spot that spawns loot should have a chance to spawn some type of gun / ammo / good gear, even if the chance is 0.001%. As it stands, it's a bum rush for the military bases. If it's already looted, server swap. And don't talk about it being unrealistic an M4 is in a barn. This is a zombie apocalypse! Maybe a soldier or his team were ambushed, they hid but turned and dropped their guns, as zombies don't hold them. Or maybe a bandit was there after being shot, bled out and died. Also, exploring certain buildings now is pointless because they never spawn anything, making exploration more of a memory game than actual "gotta comb every corner"
