Why co-operate if you're gonna get shot anyways?
Demoth replied to Goddam Firestations's topic in General Discussion
Err, what PvE? There is nothing as a threat in this game. Zombies? LOL... a fire axe makes every zombie a joke. -
I started playing Rust (very fun!) to break up my gaming time. I've turned into a KOS sniping machine with a character now with 23 souls under his belt after surviving around 50 hours in-game; it's not bragging, as my victims never had a chance to fight back, but moreso me realizing "man, I need to find something else to do with my gaming time", so I decided to get Rust. Also, I want to come back to the fresh stuff DayZ is churning out. Now I've also been on break from DayZ for about a week because a couple of instances of teleport hackers and blatant ESP hacking really brought out the salt from my eyes. So I joined Rust a few days ago. Hoooooly shit. Aimbots, people flying through the air like superman and speed hacks where people can destroy your base in 10 seconds flat with just a hatchet? Made me realize how good we have it on DayZ. Then again, Rust creator Garry DID make several acknowledgments about the hacker problems, VAC banning is in full force with hacker QQ on the forums, and active admins can pinpoint and ban hackers. Still, I've never played a game where blatant hacking was so rampant.

Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?

As has been stated, once you explore everything and have seen the scenes, the game gets a bit boring because it's lacking content. Once they put in more, this will change.... I hope. The real challenge is making dynamic events occur that are spontaneous and must be solved on your feet, such as a horde spawing, or a disease breaking out, or massive temperature plummet, or a valuable loot-spawning helicopter crashes where everyone needs to race to get there etc. etc. The human element of danger makes things unique. Every gun fight is different because you don't know the tactics and skills that will be used against you. AI zombies can only offer so much of a challenge before you fall into a rhythm or tactic to always come out on top. If they ever add in giant events that could set everyone back unless a lot of cooperation was used, you might encourage more people to help out. Notice I said "more", not "all". Edit: I've had a lot of instances where people caught me unaware in a high loot area and simply said "put your gun away and leave and we'll be cool". They didn't make me drop it, just unequip it and then I went on my way, without doubling back and trying my luck. Or they allowed me to loot or we traded. I'm sorry you haven't had that experience, as it is sort of luck. -
The Anti-Game - Why DayZ will stay a crappy game
Demoth replied to tommes's topic in General Discussion
The push back generally comes when your point comes across as telling us we're not really having fun, or that we're having fun because of a feature that objectively sucks; in other words like saying, "You guys have bad taste". You can like and hate whatever you like for whatever reason you like. Fact is, this game was never meant for mass appeal. They're trying to add in more content geared towards fostering cooperation and working towards goals. Whether they will fully succeed or not, critically or commercially, is yet to be seen. But nay-sayers are SO annoying because they pop up in every game. And then if that particular game fails, like SW:TOR, the Internet likes to jump up and down and say "I told you so!!!" despite being wrong about the other 30 games that succeeded. -

Unfortunately "it's just your opinion" is a valid retort when all the points you make are subjective while you try to make them sound objective. -

What fails is your desire to care about your character. When I'm not playing Cherno sniper YOLO-swag don't-give-a-shit thrill seeker, I play cautiously. I get nervous, I don't run punch people with guns, and if I can't run I try to negotiate for my life (if held up). If you need to game to magically force you to care about your in game toon, you're lacking imagination. If the fact other people are playing like maniacs willing to die is ruining your immersion, you lack imagination. This is a sandbox. Play in it and make your own story. If you can't handle that then go back to whatever on-rails MMO or FPS you get more enjoyment out of. -
Your points is exactly what I've said multiple times to explain why I hate hacking in DayZ (and Rust). Have you been copying me!?! Still, I've run into cheaters in DayZ, but Rust took it to a whole new level of WTF.

Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
Demoth replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I didn't say, or even imply, that everyone should KOS. KOS is ruining the game.... for you. That sounds like a personal problem. Until people understand that this alpha currently has NO incentive to group up EXCEPT to gain protection from other players, they will continue to pout about getting murdered. -
FTP games generally attract a lot of cheating, true.

I love these threads because it always boils down to, "my way of playing the game is better than yours, AND you're stupid!". -
Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
Demoth replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
No, because one is supported while one is not. You can kick someone from a server for name calling and abusive language, but not for killing. Everyone keeps bitching and moaning about KOS and it's getting old. Look, feel free to rationalize why people KOS to make yourself feel better; they're bad players, fat nerds, perma-virgins, small penises, whatever. I tend to rooftop snipe in Cherno because it starts wars. It brings out the heroes and then I test my skills against 5+ people. If I kill them all, I get lots of free gear. If I kill a few and too many show up, I now have to sneak through a city teeming with angry people to escape. If I die, people get my loot and I had an adrenaline rush. I don't always KOS, and I like positive interaction, but things get stale. Circling the map 90 times just looking for food gets boring. There are no threats outside of other players. Once they add in more incentive for veteran players to work together, even with strangers, then perhaps we'll see less KOS. Be aware that KOS will never stop. Groups will always band together with the intent of "running" an area, or roaming to wipe out and plunder the resources of others. If you took out the risk of other players, this game would get crazy stale insanely fast. -
The level of nerd rage coming out of you makes me cringe. It's almost like I can picture you pushing your classes up and almost bringing yourself to a wheeze as you typed that out. I know that stereotype is about as old as dirt, but of all the things to get so worked up over? ..... unless you're actually Brad.

What worries me are the mindsets of people who don't value their life in game, even remotely, and simply want to ruin people's enjoyment in a fashion this game wasn't aiming for. I'm not talking about KOS, but I worry that if zombies ever become such a giant problem that people will use the zombie mechanic to suicide, yet lead a trail of zombies to grounds who are stealthily navigating through a city. Sometimes I sit for HOURS with friends in the Cherno south hospital just sniping other geared players because, well, it's entertaining and it usually leads to a ton of people showing up and we have crazy city fights. This won't be as simple once zombies start swarming everywhere and can overrun our camp spots after we pop off some shots, and that's fine. But the people who kill simply because they enjoy making others rage? My guess is we're going to see naked bambis with 20+ zombies kite tailing behind them to csuse them to aggro survivor groups. . . Mark my words!!!

There is a bit more to it than that, honestly. Skyrim had a a much bigger budget, a much bigger fan base, and it was marketed out the ass. It was also a fairly polished experience that had a strong modding community to add in a trillion things to tailor it to almost anyone's taste. I loved Kings Field games, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (looking forward to 2), but let's be honest; Dark Souls had some short comings. A lack luster ending, terrible framerate in the Plague Area, and the multiplayer was absolutely horrible when someone joined in and back stabbed you while 20 feet in front of you.

Switched servers to join my bro and started as new spawn.
Demoth replied to wmike20052's topic in General Discussion
You'd be surprised how easy it is to get killed. I stalked a guy for a while until he decided to log out in a bush. I then popped him in the head and looted him. He probably thought he had glitched into a new spawn. -
Poll: How many people would survive the apocalypse?
Demoth replied to KarmaCoin's topic in General Discussion
It's funny you mention that, because Cracked.com did an article about how a zombie apocalypse would be stamped out pretty quickly, as oral bites are not an efficient way to transmit disease. The line that always made me laugh was, "Remember when that one dog got bitten by rabies and a month later every dog had rabies? Wait, you mean that didn't happen?" Edit: I said "oral" bites, as though bites can also be done anally or spiritually..... -
Disruption of body functions after a gun fight
Demoth replied to king_of_the_beans's topic in General Discussion
Errr, what servers do you play where KOS went down after items being ruined? If anything, KOS is just a way to dick people over. Now if I snipe someone and hit them twice, all their shit is ruined so I still win. Since a lot of KOS'ers (like I've been playing recently) get the first shots off, the OP's proposal just gives me more way to dick people over without killing them. -

Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game
Demoth posted a topic in General Discussion
This is sort of a "dear diary", so feel free to chime in, but this is in no way me making demands or feeling I know better than anyone else. I just was thinking about this. There have been a lot of debates about the amount of weapons in this game, and how they're really not all that hard to acquire. Then Dean is saying how he wants to have FAR less military grade weapons and gear while also making the game more reliant on improvised gear and weapons. I like the idea, somewhat, but I do have a problem with that being the direction for DayZ for a couple of reasons. 1. Let's face it, guns are fun. Maybe not turning this into Chernarus Strike: Coastal Offensive (stole that from someone else), but personally I would LOVE to see this game littered with as many or more guns than Arma 3. Don't mistake me, I don't want them common, but I think it would be interesting if you could find anything from old Soviet bloc weapons to modern military small arms with attachments (again, rare) out the ass. 2. Unless the entire system gets overhauled, using anything but military hardware is going to be incredibly difficult, but not in the "I'm so skilled" way. This engine is clunky with movements, aiming and whatnot. I've been shooting a long time, as well as move and shoots and obstacle courses, and it's hard to translate that into a game. It either because far too clunky (Arma 2, IMO) or way too floaty and arcady (Call of Duty). My point is, if they make it so finding an M4 because a 1 in a million chance, but bows and arrows and spears are everywhere, with this system, someone with the M4 is going to create an insane imbalance because of twitchy animations that aren't really that smooth. Let me address point 1 again, because I know this is probably what people are going to get hung up on. One thing they could do to help alleviate this from becoming a military sim mess is to make sure that the guns they add are chambered for different rounds while still being accurate to how the guns operate in real life. Perhaps have it so that you have M4's and SCAR-L's that are chambered in 5.56, but then you can put in HK 416's chambered for the 6.5 Grendal, or a Barrett M468 chambered in 6.8 SPC (Or less AR-15 style platforms). Then you could add pistols ranging from 9mm's to the heavy and impractical-for-combat .50 AE. What this does is make it so that even if you do find a weapon that spawns that is super tacti-cool, you're now going to be hard pressed to not only find ammo, but ammo for the gun you even managed to find. "But this is Russia! Why are you finding all this super Western bullshit guns here?!" Well, you can make the majority Russian and Eastern European guns, that's fine. But also, let's think about what Chernarus is; A former Soviet bloc country that was supposedly going through a civil war. This means you will find weapons from the US Marines who were stationed there, possibly their Recon teams, maybe some very rare Navy SEAL teams were sent in for something clandestine with the local rebel forces? (Or CIA SAD operators, or whatever else). Besides, with it being a backwater area wracked by war, what about gun runners? Black market weapons? I mean, it's Russia / near Russia..... Again, I'm not advocating that you walk down the street and trip over several $10,000 fully modded LWRC M6A2's with thermal scopes (In fact, keep thermal shit out of the game for balance sake, dear god DayZ mod....) but variety always keeps things interesting. I mean, currently the reason it's so easy to gear our is the small pool of guns and ammo types, so if you make the spawn rate for guns the same but having 90 different types of guns ranging from hunting guns to man-killers, I'd imagine finding the right ammo, magazines / clips or whatever else would now make it hard for you to use your fancy toy. Let me also briefly touch on point 2 as well. I'm not saying that all the survivors need to be super trained killers who move with tactical precision to clear houses. What I'm saying is that the movements, as has been touched on forever, just feels clunky. Part of the reason a lot of games add in features to help you seamlessly traverse around a map without needing 8 different buttons to accomplish this is because the human body and our motor system is incredibly complex. Just walking takes an incredible amount of balance with muscles constantly firing off in different spots just to keep you from toppling. This also means that when you're trying to do a manuever quickly through a door, let's say, you instinctively know hot to twist, turn push off and get a burst to go through. Unless you're incredibly uncoordinated, you usually don't get hung up on a little edge of the door, run in place, have to back up, strafe to the left a little and then go through. And the animations? Ho-boy. What's odd is for a game with such clunky movements, it amazes me that when you're looking at other people, they're all able to make these incredibly fast hair-pin turns while they zig zag to close the distance on you to punch you. People don't really shift their weight to indicate they're juking, they just are running straight and now suddenly making a 90 degree turn without losing speed (at Olympic level sprinting speed I may add). Again, I'm not sure if this stuff in all placeholder for now, so don't bite my head off if it's all planning on being changed in the future. I'm just saying that the melee combat is no where near Chivalry: Medieval Warfare levels of smooth, so adding in any type of non-firearm ranged weapon I feel will be completely useless when it'll still be easier to hyper-sprint at someone with an M4 and punch them out. I know I said melee and movements are clunky, but currently punching is pretty accurate to where you're aiming and is surprisingly easy to punch someone out with if the game doesn't decide to desync either your or your opponent.- 81 replies

Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game

It would be funny trying to see everyone run from zombies, only to have their legs go behind their heads and doing reverse somersaults. -
The statement "fundamentally flawed" has been discussed and it doesn't mean what everyone thinks it means. To leave because that was your big hangup sounds like you were just looking for an excuse to leave and were grasping at something so you could blame someone specific... which makes no sense to me, but whatever. Either way, I want this game to succeed, but they really need to stop letting Rocket talk. What he says can be so hard to put into context and always seems to cause a shitstorm.

Demoth replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
People keep forgetting this when it comes to human anatomy. Using any type of instrument, even a weapon specifically made for cleaving, will need considerable maintenance if it's always coming into contact with bone. Even the fabled weeb weapon, the katana, needs a lot of care after battle, as nicks and dents can cause a blade to shatter. And the skull is hard, and swinging around an axe will become quite tiring. -

I'm loving Rust so far, but yeah, it's also in Alpha and still very rough around the edges. Kinda suffers from the issue too that there is not a WHOLE lot of content in there, and so people gear up, make bases and then murder everyone. Also, Rust is absolutely PLAGUED with hackers. I've been on 3 servers so far where people were flying like superman, and one guy was snap-spinning with a rifle on a mountain killing everyone who came into view with a single headshot. Absolutely ridiculous. I had to switch to a server with an active admin who was stamping out hackers.
