Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game

you can find morphine and epinephrine... why would mercury be any rarer? -
guess what's going to happen when dayz will be released to more than just those people who support this game in alpha stage already. i think the audience will consist of an even bigger part of "deathmatch" guys. it wont get better by itself. either you offer different hives with PvE enforced (FF off) / PvP / PvE where killing is sanctionized somhow (like heartbeatsensor if killcount > 3) / etc... or u will see a clan/team dominated deathmatch scene in an open world surrounding. it will be clan wars and freshmeat... so i mean the principle of heroism and murderers is planned to be implemented AFAIK, but they will have to do things like reward people who help strangers and punish people whose kill count wents up like 1 per hour. and not only +10 honor for helping a stranger and with 100 honor you get a nice badge... no you have to make it worth helping others and bandits have to be marked/punished so that their advantage in loot (by killing players and looting them) is equalized.

i have a bug report. running up ladders on the ship can cause broken legs if u are going up there fast and furiously... :D

3 statements on how to really remove serverhopping (which still is possible)
Ovomaltine posted a topic in General Discussion
ok i have a real thing to say about this actually. 1. i like the timeout. 300 seconds are reasonable. 2. i would like MORE if you actually could rejoin the same server you have been on without this restriction. (internet disconnect -> 30 sec sitting -> CANT RELOGIN to get to safety) 3. and furthermore i would even have something like this in mind -> choose 20 servers of your favorites which u can flag as "MAIN" servers, you can switch between those with 300 sec delay and you can not join other servers, unless u redefine your "MAIN" servers. you can redefine a "MAIN" server every hour. you dont have to use all 20 flags at once. but as soon as u have chosen all your main servers u will have to wait 1 hour if u want to switch a server you dont like anymore with a new one. that way the REAL serverhopping problem (which still exists with 300sec delay) would be taken care of. -
dayz i covered by VAC --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Anti-Cheat as soon as its going beta or release i bet the routines will be updated even more frequently. and vac has proven to be a very successful detection system. ofc there are 0day hacks. but also 1 banned cd-key means ~30$ bucks out of the window... so lets see how this develops. it doesnt surprise me at all that there are exploits/hacks/scripts/hooks/esps for an alpha version of a game that are not yet detected.

yeah, a little more rareness on ammo would be fine! i never ever ran out of ammo as soon as i had a weapon. and like 1-2 starting mags for it. making your own ammo with rare ingredients (like mercury tips) wouldnt neccessarily have to be weaker... :) -
are you implying you are a smartass? :D

lol what a naive assessment of the situation

awwww dat feel - today's story with a punchline at the end
Ovomaltine posted a topic in General Discussion
its not a very long story but (edit: it became a longer story than i intended) it just happened to me. and i know some of you know that feeling :) it is a good feeling. just joined a server and was near NE airfield and thought i give it a visit. lay down on the hills to the northwest of the airfield to have a good view over the runway. then i saw a rather friendly looking char with blue shirt, mountain backpack, axe and fn45 in hand but not raised in the glassed roof of the tower building. well i guess the good loot was gone then. well i am fully geared anyway. except for some protector cases that i'd like to have but cant find anymore. and a fn45 maybe, but not so important. so i decide to watch the guy a bit, it was a ~25/40 server so maybe we can see some interesting things happening. the guy was finished with the tower building quite fast and checked out the first hangar. (door of the far NW building was open, but he went in the direction of NW, so i guess he wasnt the first to loot this place anyway). just when he exited the first hangar, 2 military guys came out of the space between the 2 hangars. the guy was just running and ignoring them because i guess he didnt expect them. and they just kos'd him full auto with their m4's. well now the important part begins :) i was watching the scene since the beginning with my bipodded black mosin ready for a shot. i wasnt about to shoot the - lets call him - "friendly guy", i could have done that way before when he was in the glass roof still. this wasnt my intention either. i don't kos, except i get surprised by anyone with a raised firearm who runs around the corner. but that bandit behaviour (it was even a 2 v 1 !!!) gave me the rest. it took me 2 shots and both were downed in 4 seconds even before they could start body-stripping. when i went the ~400 metres towards them, i could see one of them was dead and the other managed to crawl behind the hangar and seems to have logged out there. well... the punchline is... 5 seconds later the server restarted and i couldnt even check their bodies out ;-) but it was a great feeling to avenge the death of a lonesome guy who got assaulted. -

I take him seriously. 25 - 40% of the threads are posted during braindead mode of OP. -
I go for the Mosin + M4 + Magnum + FN45 + Sawed off setup. While the Magnum and FN45 are stored in Protector Cases.

hi, it just happened to me that i spawned a ~20/40 server and i log out mostly in some woods to be 30sec safe. but when i logged in today a random guy stood aside me i could just see him aiming at me in the first second my screen showed the game image and then 0.5sec later there was the shot -> YOU ARE DEAD. i dont want safe zones like suggested in another thread, because its unrealistic. but i think the spawning/respawning mechanism has to be taken care of to prevent such things. i mean its alpha and from one patch to the other they just put in 30 sec anti-combat-logging delay without thinking about the consequences. even in those 30 seconds someone could happen to be near just not visual and then kill u in the last 5 seconds of u sitting there. even if u werent involved in combat. maybe he followed you silently from afar and just waited for you to log out. please if u implement features to counter some bad manner tactics like combat logging, then THINK IT THROUGH. FOR EXAMPLE. if u hard close the dayz process (ALT +F4, proc kill etc...). 30 sec delay is fine. but if i want to log out safely, this has to be an option because in real life i dont log out of nothing and have full awareness every second i live. so make it like that. if i click on a "log out" button it querys a radius ~1000m around me and if there is nobody else in this radius it logs me out immediately (!!!). now if there is someone in the radius, it may be a friend or a bandit or a neutral or whatever then i am told/asked that if i want to proceed with logging out a 30sec sit delay will start. (so logging out near trusted friends is not a problem) but when i didnt have anyone friendly i knew of around me, i can now abort logging out and move to a safer spot to try again. the fact that it logs u out immediately, if no one is near (+300 sec relogging delay) should totally stop people from using this as a kind of tracker. it doesnt tell u any information about the location of the other player(s) in terms of direction or range anyway. i think safely logging out should be an important thing in such a game where technical circumstances shouldnt interfere with a loss of fun @ gameplay. (like dying to some random who kills u during normal logout phase, ofc betrayal by friends is still possible :D ) additionally you can make it force logout you (30sec sit delay) if u use it like 5 times in a row in a time frame of 2 minutes (and say NO to logout) when players are near, but i am not sure about that one...actually the tracking is not really a useful information for the fact that it would log you out instantly when no one is near. so i guess this precaution is unneccessary. now the second part is how to avoid spawn kills like i experienced today. i had full equip... :( a grace period at start would come to mind first, but i dont think its good. because then in such situations there would still be a race to who has his gun up first. because its not a normal encounter. it always catches you off guard. i think a better solution to that problem is a similar mechanism like to prevent logging out killing. there are 2 possiblities. i like the 2nd one more than the first. 1.) if u spawn and in a radius of 500-750m there is/are a/other player(s) then it moves you to the spot ~800m away from him on the straight line between your original logout spot and his current location. that would be very uncomplicated. 2.) if u spawn and there is another play in a radius of 500-750m there is a dialogue prompt which lets u chose between "spawn anyway" or "cancel" - "spawn anyway" does the obvious and spawns u at your logout spot, with the risk of being detected first, because of your player entity being visible before u can actually do shit - "cancel" also does the obvious and gives you the opportunity to wait and try again later, or to go onto another server without 300 sec delay. honest opinions and please no sweeping appeasment... read it. think about it. answer if u want. thx.

Yes, to some extend server announce their restart times in recurring admin messages. For example I played on a server recently that said sth like "We restart every 3 hours @9:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 etc..." But there is no system command or info to find out on any server you play. So just stick to those who announce it if u find this information useful.

i'd be interested in those threads then, because i cant see more exploitation potential than there is at the actual moment with this implementation...!!!? and are you sure you understood my concepts in total? if there is a big discussion with a conclusion i am really interested, please link me to those thread(s). but if not, then please take the time to understand what i am suggesting and lets talk about it.
-
thx for the info! actually thats better yes... i just thought about it and player tied tents would maybe produce random situations where tents would be at the same spot ... but it also means if my server is full (technical circumstance) i cant get to my stuff... ... which kind of also defeats the open world concept :D

Mosin useless if you try to learn long range sniping.
Ovomaltine replied to wuffi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
yes! and actually this makes even more sense than the stupid hold breath button. i mean there is no button for taking a dump or for swallowing the things you eat/chew. the hold breath isnt even a realistic depiction of how real sharpshooters/riflemen do it... they shoot in between their normal breathing rhythm (so breathe in - shot - breathe out.) or even ignore their breathing at all if it is flat enough. no need to complicate this in a computer game. because it makes shooting more complicated than in real life. edit: @OP by the way. you can see the impact for a short second, at least if u fire from proned position -
This logout system seriously needs to be deleted

is ricochet really implemented??? or do you just guess? edit: ok i just researched... ricochet exists in the arma 2 engine. but only if the bullet hits the ground. then there is a probability it bounces up again and continues the path
