This game was sold as a Zombie survival simulator. The current mechanics make it more PVP than it is going to be, as there really isnt any base building or other group oriented stuff to do. Im willing to bet that there are many players like me who bought the game early as a supporter and play off and on to check the progress. There are probably many more who are waiting for the full release before they buy it. Both of these groups of players want to play a survival game with pvp a secondary portion of that survival not the main focus. If the game ends up being only - Get gear, go to citiy, Kill players - than that would be a waste of basically 98% of the map. There are many games that fill that market and do it in much smaller environments and have quick respawns. PVPers like to think they are always the majority, but the stats to any game that has both options will always favour PVE. You can call them carebears or berry pickers all you want but most people want to do something other than kill other people in their spare time.

I came back to the game to see how things have come along. How are the zombies?? Ill be playing more to check the game out but just wanted to know what people have to say about zombies in DAYZ currently.

Thanks for all the answers. I played a bit last night and it is nice that the zombies have better collision detection with objects. Still think I wont be playing a lot until the game is closer to completion as it doesnt really feel like a zombie apocalypse survival game yet.

Yes some of the movement could be improved but I do disagree with the premise that we should be able to circle strafe while wielding a fire axe or any other heavy weapon. That is completely unrealistic and not natural in anyway shape or form. The inertia just does not allow you to swing a heavy object and run in perfect circles. Circle strafing is a twitch shooter thing and not something someone does in real life. -

So I come back to the game after a few months and I am still shocked :o there is no Autorun Key in the controls. I will continue to use my keyboard macro but we really should not have to use a work around for a basic feature. -
I would like to suggest more focus on features players actually notice

At this point in the alpha the under the hood stuff is way more important than tents or cars or any other bigger gameplay addition. There needs to be a solid base to work from. I think many people that want all these features NOW! NOW! NOW! really should have waited till at least the beta before playing. It could take 6 months or much longer before you see these major additions. -
States should display icons, not text/annoying sounds

I like the icons. They are simple and unobtrusive. To the people that say we shouldnt have icons, or even the text telling us what is wrong because of "realism", I would like to point out that I would know if I was thirsty, hungry, or bleeding in real life. I could feel these things. The point of the icons is not hand holding, they are there to represent what I would know about myself in real life. We cant feel our character so the game has to let us know some way the status of our avatar. I would much prefer visual cues over audio because in real life my stomach wouldnt be constantly grumbling. The repeated audio cues would get annoying very quickly, where simple gui icons are much less intrusive. I would also have an option to disable them if you so inclined. -
I wouldnt mind permanent health damage done a little simpler. Like you actually lose a bit of you max health from each wound and broken bone. The more injuries you have got over the course of your life the less total health you have. We need skills or some form of progression for you to care. If your character had been alive for long time and had a bunch of high level skills you would be less inclined to suicide and would take less risks.

Many people have already stated before and after your post that auto-run is nothing like a teleporting/fast travel system. It cannot get you to your destination automatically. You still have to guide your character and watch for danger. And there is no reasonable person who would consider an auto-run key 'botting'. I keep seeing the word 'abuse" as well in relation to the autorun key. How can you 'abuse' the autorun key?? People are using wording that does not make sense in the context of an autorun key. It cannot be abused, there is no possible way for someone to abuse the autorun key. It does not make people go faster, or become invincible, or automatically get them to their destination. Getting a sandwich or taking a piss is not abuse. Those actions dont give anyone a gameplay advantage, and actually have a large disadvantage in that you could walk off a cliff, into zombies, or players who want to kill you. I myself never leave my character unattended while using my auto run macro. If people want to go afk while auto running, let them. Easier targets. Again the only thing the autorun key is for, is the comfort of the player fingers. Holding down the W for long durations can cause discomfort. I will continue to use my macro if they dont add an autorun key but would prefer a proper more elegant in game method. I will also continue to respond to the silly arguments against an autorun key. There is absolutely no reason to not have the command in game. -

The whole melee weapons system needs an overhaul. Fire Axes are not combat weapons, they are designed for chopping away at structures. You pull back and chop, then you reset. Running and swinging with an Fire Axe desont work in real life, the weapon is completely unbalanced for that kind of action. Obviosuly if it hits a person it would do serious damage but you couldnt re-swing as fast as a machete or baseball bat. I would much rather use a baseball bat in real life than a Fire Axe becasue you can swing a baseball bat much more effectively and efficiently while moving. -

It has already stated why there should be an autorun key, maybe you should not have skimmed the thread. :rolleyes: But to humour you, the main reason is Ergonomics. It is better for the player to toggle a heavily used key than to have to hold said key down for extended periods of time causing discomfort. It has nothing to do with being lazy. Holding W does not add any gameplay. Having an autorun key does not make the map smaller or allow fast travel. It is simply there for the comfort of the player. Now please explain to me why such a nice quality of life feature should not be implemented?? -

Even if you consider this a "lose your inventory game" having persistent storage defeats that purpose as you can just get all your loot back. What is the point of death at that stage? I am against permanent loot storage and I hope that at least Hardcore servers do not have that feature. They can be on regular servers. -

Nice attempt at saving face, but your post was not an essay to skim. It was 21 words double spaced over 5 lines. It implied that the previous 9 pages were not needed and people only had to do what you stated to autorun. The whole point of the thread is that those are not solutions and an in game command should be added. Now if you have something to add for why there should not be an autorun key please inform us. -
All the melee weapens need a rebalance. In real life there is no way I would take a fire axe over a machete or even a baseball bat. Reason being I could swing the machete and baseball bat much more effectively. Fire Axes are just not designed for combat. Theye should all have advatages and disadvanges and be more sidegrades then straight upgrades. Though I would still make machetes the best melee weapon but really rare.

Why would any of those make auto run not work? Why does it matter to you if people get sniped, run into traps, trip, or damage their feet?? Why does it matter to you if people get fatigued? I will get fatigued if I hold down the key or use auto-run, it makes no difference. Anyone who would complain about getting fatigued or dying from auto-run is a moron, so lets not use their potential complaints as an argument against auto-run, ok?? How about we dont call it it Auto-run because people seem to be latching onto the RUN part of it. In all games that have and Auto-Run are actually just Auto Move Forward button. So I would be fine with auto walking, hell I even do auto walking currently with my macro by using the in game toggle for run/walk. When I use my auto-move forward button I still pay attention to my surroundings and so do all the other smart players. I drive alot for a living and use cruise control often but I still have to pay attention to the road and other drivers or I could die. It is the same thing with auto-move forward. So far no one has come up with an intelligent argument against auto-run. I really do want to understand why people are so negative towards a simple key command? -

Everyone would just auto run and watch their character run into a horde of zombies if we add an autorun key. Ok.... that is really really stupid. Why would people do that?? And even IF they did why does it matter to you. If you dont want to use autorun, then dont use it. I seriously dont understand where you guys get this logic. Are you all from a bizzaro world or something. Telling people to use or a coin or macro it is just telling people to autorun. This thing you apparently dont want in the game and yet you suggest people do it anyway.... :rolleyes: Auto-run wont cause mass hysteria of everyone running into zombies. It only allows the player to hit a button once to move forward instead of holding down said button. I use my macro to autorun but I still look where I am going and check my surroundings with the ALT key. I also never use it in towns. I am fine with using my macro but I just can not stay away from the ridiculous arguments in this thread. :P -
I agree. Maps are too rare. I have found one piece in my entire time playing. I also seem to spawn in the same place every single time. It would be nice to spawn any where on the map and not just the east coast.

You think it is better to put something on the key, macro it, or use some silly steam overlay trick rather the simply add an autorun command to the game?? All of your suggestions do the same thing an autorun key would do anyway but much less elegent than an in game solution. Do you see how silly that makes you look?? By the way I already do macro it, but why shouldnt there just be the option in game?? I fail to see the logic in being against an autorun key. It is a simple suggestion and good one and I am just baffled at the amount of negativity towards a simple key command. :huh: -

Still no one has come up with an argument that makes any sense. Having an auto run key is nothing like auto aim, it doesnt play the game for you. You cant just hit autorun and walk away from your computer and get to your destination. You still have to be in control of your character. You still want to be looking around for threats, and you dont want to run off a cliff. Holding W has nothing to do with being lazy or making me "exercise". Holding W is a simple action and anyone can do it, so why not have the computer do it. It takes no skill, unlike aiming which requires the person be to be skilled at hitting their target. Holding W requires no skill. I will keep repeating these things because apparently people can go on for 9 pages and repeat the same silly argument about holding W being a skill and that it dumbs down the game by toggling a movement key. How about we make crouch a non toggle, and prone a non toggle, raise weapon a non toggle. You would have to hold the key down if you want to stay on laying on the ground, you let the key up and you stand up. That is the EXACT same thing as having an autorun key. All it does it toggle the forward movement. Just as the other keys toggle you being crouched or prone. Again no skill involved. It doesnt allow the game to be played without player interaction. People already set up macros and jam things in their keyboard to do the same funtion. It is a common feature because it makes sense. It is like having cruise control on your car. You still have to be in complete control of the vehicle, all it does it keeps you moving forward until you decide to stop. Again, it doesn't get me to my destination any faster, it doesn't automatically navigate the terrain. It just moves me forward by toggling a button. -

I still dont understand how people are against this. And how is it dumbing down the game?? Holding the W key isn't exactly the most intellectually challenging thing on the planet. Instead of people jamming something in their keyboard, or suggesting people buy high end gaming keyboards, maybe the Devs could just add a simple autorun toggle in the controls. Seriously I really don't understand how people are against this. I haven't seen a single reasonable argument for why an autorun key should not be added. -
I feel the same way. The "realism" argument just doesnt work for me. Earlier today I met a bunch of dudes and we ended working together for a while. It was still very confusing telling which avatar was speaking and who was who. Where as in real life I could easily tell which person was talking and who was who. Sometimes you need something to be an abstraction for a real life idea or function. The game already tells us if we are thirsty,hungry, or bleeding with a HUD because we cant feel our character, where as in real life I could tell if I was hungry, thirsty, or bleeding without a little popup in the corner. I am not saying everyone should have nametags right away but once you all exchange names and add each other as friends their name should pop up above their head. That way you still have to know the person and you cant just tell who someone is if you havent met them before. It should still be short range and basically it would fade at the same rate the direct voice does. This way you still have to be cautious of travellers in the distance until they are close enough for you to recognize them visually as you would in real life. The nametag would simulated that as a replacement for an ability we have in the real world but we lack in DayZ as people are too similar in appearance in game. I would also make it an option you could turn off if you didnt want it.

Met some really friendly guys on this server earlier. Here is the story. I joined the server and just spawned, it had been up for a while so every town I went to on my trip up north was already looted. I had logged on as the sun was setting so it got dark pretty fast and I still had no food, no gear. I keep on pushing up north hoping I can find something, anything to eat that isnt rotten. I start getting the message that Im dying of starvation and think this is an unfortunate start to my new Hardcore character when off in the distance I see 3 flashlights. I run up to them waving and telling them Im friendly and starving to death. They kindly drop some rice for me and I start munching down while they keep asking me if I need anything else. I thanked them for the rice and asked if I could tag along. We stayed together for a while exploring the server at night, and it was actually pretty cool with the flashlight/headlamps lighting up the way. Anyway it was a lucky encounter because the server was mostly empty as people were leaving once it got dark. There were only 4 other people on the server besides me and I happened to run into three of them as I was about to starve to death in pretty much the middle of nowhere. They are all on my friends list now. -
Would you rather have more Zombies or gradually increase player count?

I want more zombies first before more players. This game is called DayZ..... the Z is for Zombies. Its a large part of why most people bought the game. I want a zombie survival game. Yes zombies are no match for players but this isnt a deathmatch FPS. Zombies allow for more interaction between players because it makes people work together more to survive. We need more zombies right now to find the right ratio of zombies to players. Once we have that then we can start scaling them up simultaneously. Currently there are too few zombies for the size of the map and the amount of players. I run into like 2 zombies every 5 towns. There should be 10 zombies in every town and tons more in cities and military bases. -
The name hardcore implies more but at the moment the only difference is that it is locked to first person view.

Kicking on joining is against the rules. Report any server that does it. There are no private servers yet, so everyone has the right to be on any of the servers as they are all using the PUBLIC hive. Only reason players can be kicked is if they are being verbally abusive or exploiting bugs/hacking.
