So I was fully geared up and paranoid about losing my stuff, had a lovely pristine mosin and attachments including an LRS. Got my brains splattered point blank by magnum owning server hopper in the Military Base SE of Vybor as I was looking for a pristine assault vest. Didn't really need a pristine assault vest as I had a perfectly good worn one, but such is the nature of the end game in DayZ currently. But as usual it was like being released from the prison of my possessions. So I roll a new char on a near full 40 player server unshackled by the burdens of possessions and decide I'll jog from my spawn at Solnichniy all the way along the coast south and then west along the road and see how far I get as a bambi and what kind of players I'd meet as I normally drink some water and head inland ASAP. Just looted for the bare essentials on my jog, a melee weapon to ward of the odd zed, some water and a enough food so I don't starve. What a fine experience I had. Encountered a player fist fighting a Zed in Solnichniy, threw in a few punches at the zed myself, said hi and carried on. South of the town a few shots rang out, never saw the dude, zig zagged and kept goin, thankfully he was a poor shot. Discovered a bunch of flashlights coming on my way through Kamyshovo, didn't hang around, looked fairly suspect. On the far side of town I get held up by a geared up guy with a mosin, turns out he's a Hero, he gives me an opened can of tuna, I thank him after a small chat and I'm on my way again. Electro was surprisingly uneventful aside from a few zeds, ran right thru the centre of town, even carelessly looted a couple of buildings for food. Onward. Between Electro and Cherno I meet two bambi's fistfighting, one goes down as I approach, I circle the remaining dude and tell him that wasn't very nice, he ignores me I carry on. On the way into Cherno I meet a guy jogging on the road, we jog together for a few 100 yards, 'Out for a jog?' I enquire, he replies that he is in a lighthearted tone, we part company a short time later as I detour into the industrial area to look for a small backpack as its getting a bit awkward with only a 4 slots as I have a bottle and a couple of cans at this point, I find one pretty quick. I see a sniper rattling around on the walkways above me, I see him first, I stand still and wave, he waves back, doesn't fire, a hero on overwatch evidently, I carry on, my faith in the DayZ playerbase improving with every step I go. I approach Balota Airbase, thinking, this is where my tale will end, I will surely die here. I run in the 1st gate on the east end and run directly to the nearest prison cell building on the other side of the runway. I shout friendly coming in as I enter the building, no one is on the ground floor. But some serious shit has gone down here, the ground floor is littered with military gear, mags and weapons that was obviously taken off several fully geared players, I grab as much as I can as quickly as possible and run of into the trees on the north side as I'm not sure if someone was upstairs, I never went up. I peruse the items I have found, most of the military clothing is ruined but pockets are pockets, a ruined magnum and FNX, I discard them. But lo and belhold a pristine mosin with a pristine LRS, I shake my head in amusement and resolve not to get paranoid and slink of into the north like a shadow. Easy come easy go I figure, I decide that tonight, I'll make the return journey to Solnichniy along the coast but this time fully geared up and in Hero mode. I have a feeling the return journey will be wholly different experience. Moral of the story, don't be owned by your own gear, fate intervenes in the strangest ways in this game. If I was to go about looking for a pristine LRS I certainly wouldn't have thought running along the coast carelessly would have netted me one. It's a funny old game.

What will make me trust another player? Solo players v. Solo player

That line cracked me up :) -
Big server optimization and more zombies incoming!

Aaaaaaanyways... More zeds is good but hopefully a bit of tweaking of their AI so there won't be 5 of them walking through the walls of a building at me simultaneously. AI is tricky so I appreciate thats a fair bit of work, all in good time. Just seems odd to add more zeds while they are so broken. And it would be nice if they could turn off rabbits till they have their own AI, they serve no purpose yet other than wasting server power and freaking out players. Good news too that they identified some major bottlenecks, keep up the good work. -

They all appear to be relevent to gaming in general and number 4 seems particularly discriptive of DayZ as it is right now, although all 5 beliefs are manifest in the game -

Carefully now, you'll offend the roleplayers, apparently if you'd prefer to take your chances and not submit to arrest, then you aren't playing the game properly, coz they know whats proper. -

LOL, based on your avatar and sig I'd guess you may have some trust issues yourself. -

I dunno if I love it yet, but I am so drawn to it, often frustrating but ALWAYS compelling -

I hear you. But development is goin to go in a particular route so the devs might welcome any discussion even if it is possibly premature -

True, but aspirational, I fear it would require a sea change in gamer mentality. What can the devs do to incentivise that kind of behavior? -

I'm talking about how things play out this minute... If you perceive this thread as a whine thread, you are mistaken If you perceive this thread as a KOS advocacy thread, you are mistaken If you perceive this thread as an anti-KOS thread, you are mistaken It is a discussion.(I hope) Lets start with the caveat that you are a solo player with quite a bit of time invested in your current char. Just with regard to solo play as any wise solo player should keep his head down if he sees a geared up team operating as a squad. So I'm fully geared up, I see another fully geared up player, he's not aware of me and I'm pretty sure he's soloing. I have a few options... #1 Attempt to arrest him, and gauge if he's a good guy or a bad guy or somewhere in between. #2 Shoot him on site and risk looting him. #3 Shoot him for the hell of it and get the hell out of dodge. #4 Not reveal myself and either leave the area or wait till he does. #5 Make no attempt to arrest him but speak to him over local from cover and see how that goes. Option 1 comes with enormous risk depending on where I am, a populated town means I'm likely to reveal myself to a third party. Option 2 has similar problems to option 1 but less so as it takes less time to simply loot than to arrest but the gear is probably wrecked and did you need his gear anyways? Option 3 risks exposing yourself to a third party also but also eliminates the threat of the 2nd player seeing you. Option 4 eliminates a significant aspect of the game but that gear you are overly attached too is safe. Option 5 is more complex and possibly the most interesting, you are hidden but the second party and possibly more people know you are there now. Anyways is that all the options? Suggest more if you have some. As far as I can see everyone seems to be pretty twitchy and untrusting, and the majority are overly attached to their stuff. Based on this premise I can see why many people seem to opt for option 3 and 4. Basically, I'm just trying to gauge community sentiment, are you hoping to see this game develop into a coop type thing where you are rewarded for cooperating with others, or would you prefer a more aggressive shooter type game. It currently seems to be leaning toward shooter due to the alpha nature of the game and the lack of more expansive endgame content, and that fine, people like shooters, its a valid genre but somewhat thin is all. But will people expect this kind of gameplay to be expanded now that they are getting used to it. I get the impression that people will still want to shoot each other even in much later versions of the game, despite the fact that at some point it might be the most unwise course of action due to expansion of game mechanics that would reward a more cooperative approach. tl:dr Will the developers be able to create a version of the game that will overcome the typical gamers desire to shoot each other, coz when you give a player a rifle and a crosshairs thats the most likely outcome. And don't get me wrong PLEASE, I'm not averse to shooting the odd player for sport, nor do I mind the helping the odd player when it suits, but how can these interactions be balanced. -
No, I'm talking about the current state of the game, I hope the environment becomes the enemy in due course. So difficult in fact that you'll be happier to see other players as it might be mutually beneficial. And even if those you encounter aren't friendly they are significantly less of a threat than cherarus itself. In the future you''ll be more inclined to give strangers the benefit of the doubt I hope. Currently, its trust no one once you get away from the coast coz all they want to do is hold you up or kill you outright because the environment is quite static and non-threatening and people have nothing better to do than grief. What some people call roleplaying others call griefing.
