I'd also like to add that I think "The Fourth Wall" is a pretty nice solution, but after playing ARMA 3, and Day Z today with this on my mind, I realised that a more locked-down 3rd-person view would suffice. It's already been suggested, even by Rocket himself, that the 3rd-person view be changed to something similar to that of Gears of War. I think that alone would solve quite a few problems with 3rd person, but not all of them. 3rd person in its current state is very over-powered, and is seemingly limitless. It gives a very unrealistic amount of situational awareness. At the very least, 3rd-person needs to be nerfed.

How do you snipe? (Finding ranges, positions, tactics.) Discussion.

An update from my sniper position on a highly-populated server: I spotted a sniper about 280 metres to my flank. He was crawling in prone position, about to set up on a small hill. He was in a bald patch of the forest, and was heading to a bald spot. When seeking out his position, he seemed to be favouring a large, unrestricted view of the target area, rather than a position that would conceal him from several angles. I shot him once. Not sure if it hit. It may have hit the dirt right in front of me, as I was caught a little off-guard, seeing as how he was 90 degrees from where I was set up to shoot at. I shot again, and hit him in the leg. Shot him again somewhere, and he started to get up and crouch-run, which is when I shot him in the ass. He dropped dead. I shot again to make sure he was dead. I was pretty low on water, so I figured I should go and loot his corpse. There was a large, open field between him and myself, so I scanned all of the surroundings to be as sure as I could that there was no one watching. I crouch-ran across the field, and got to his body, and got some drinks, and ammo. He had the same weapon as me: A long-range, scoped, mosin nagin with bipod attached. But, he had a large, green, mountain backpack on. It definitely gave him away. Even though he was prone, I saw his backpack moving around like a giant caterpillar. I much prefer the hunting backpack. It's only 5 slots smaller, but it could save you from being spotted, thus saving your life. When I was looting his corpse, I heard some gunshots very close by my right, on the other side of the small hill the corpse and I were on. The shots weren't being fired at me, so I stayed prone, hoping to spot some movement. Eventually a fully-geared guy came running over the hill, quite haphazardly. I waited for him to pass by me, and I got up, and crouched. I then shot him in the back at about 180 metres range, as he ran downhill, across an open field. I shot him twice more after he dropped, just to be on the safe side. I didn't need to loot his body, but I figured that there's not really much point in all of this if I don't. It makes it into a sort of sport/game. It would be too easy to just sit in the same spot all day and shoot. -
Alright, you clearly didn't watch the video in the OP, which explains how 3rd person doesn't really give you much more situational awareness, just an unrealistic advantage. Please at least read/watch the OP before jumping on and saying stupid things. And yet you are complaining because there are too few player on the 1st person server. Tell me: how does few player on a server disturbs your survival experience? Well, it doen't. I figure you don't care that much. --> You are looking for PvP and with a full server it's easier to PvP. "How does few player on a server disturbs your survival experience?" Well, after translating your neanderthal-speak, I can provide you with an answer: There are hardly any zombies in the game at the moment. You expect people to play on servers with hardly any people? Let's see you have fun on a server with 5 people. Yeah, unless you're just into collecting loot for the sake of it, I don't think that'll happen.

To the people saying that having First-Person-Only servers fixes the problem: It would if there were enough of these servers, and enough people playing on them. I truly wish that the majority of players played on first-person servers, but sadly, It's rare to find more than 8-12 people on a first-person-server (At least here in Australia). To the people saying that it's too easy to get stuck on things in first person: Learn to play. One learns how to circumvent such issues after a short time of playing ARMA 2 /Day Z. eg. don't walk sideways through doorways or you'll get stuck. Pretend your character is a giant, rectangular block, and you'll find yourself getting stuck a lot less To the people saying that they want to see their character: You have the inventory screen, and in first-person view you can also hold down alt to look down and see your character as a "first-person actor". I sympathise with 3rd person players, as I do use it when I'm on a 3rd person server, so as not to be at a disadvantage. However, the game is much more fun, intense, and immersive when played in first-person. I like the previous suggestion of the player inventory screen showing a real-time character model, who is actually doing whatever the player is doing, instead of standing there like a mannequin.

Dear OP, This was one of the best posts I've ever seen on any game forum. The video you made was so well-made, and well-worded. I cannot commend you enough. I completely agree with everything you said. Playing Day Z in First Person raises the intensity and immersion immensely. The fixes for 3rd person would be great, and if implemented, would allow First Person players to play against 3rd person players, without being at a disadvantage. I hope everyone watches your video. It would be great to see more videos of that quality on game forums, instead of stupid ranting. BUMP!

I like to move really slowly around any area that may have players nearby. I will even crawl in prone position for long periods of time. It's worth knowing that players don't see grass past 100-200 metres, so if you're just hiding in grass, you will probably stick out to anyone at a distance. The forests that surround NW airfield are a good place to go prone in, because it's quite common to run into other players there, and it'll often be very close range. This means that hiding in the grass will actually work, as the enemy will have the grass rendered on their screen. I use a lot of real life sniper/military tactics when it comes to moving around. Moving slowly means that you're less likely to be spotted by other players. Think of every time you've spotted another player: Has he been running around, fully upright? Most players are usually doing something like that. It pays to take things slow. This isn't counter-strike, or COD. Use cover, take the long route if it means having a few bushes or trees to hide behind on your way there. Always think of where you're going to run to if you were to start getting shot at. I like to snipe from a prone position, under a tree, or bush (trees and bushes render at any distance). Sniping from rooftops is risky, because before entering a city/town, I always scan the rooftops, as well as everything else I can see. Players stick out like sore thumbs if they're on a rooftop, and you're on a hill/ elevated position. Windows and rooftops give the sniper's victim a quick place to look to if they hear gunshots, or suspect a sniper. If a sniper fires from a forest, his position will be less obvious. The opponent will have to look at a bunch of trees, rather than a building with windows that might as well be bullseye targets. I like to stay as still as possible once I'm in position, and patiently wait-- just like a real sniper. Any movement could potentially give away your position. Another smart thing to do is find a spot where you will only be able to be seen/shot at from a limited number of angles. Sniping from a position where you can see and shoot from all angles may seem good at first, but it leaves you open to being flanked. I'm currently stationed under a tree. The tree branches conceal me from nearly every angle, except the direction I'm aiming, which is fine, because from that angle, I'll see my enemy before they see me. I'm not saying where on the map, but I'm about 300 metres from where I'm aiming I'm not on a hill or anything. I am only slightly elevated, on a small slope. So far in this spot, I've killed one fully-armed guy, and missed 2 guys who combat logged immediately after I fired. I don't think I'll be easily found. I hope that helps! And I really like your ethics, ie. helping others, and not just KoSing. I would try to only kill bandits, but I've found that trying to help or police other players by killing bandits often gets me mistaken for a bandit. Unfortunately, in the game's current state, there isn't much to do other than kill other players. There aren't anywhere near enough zombies to pose a threat. -
Haha dude it may have been me who killed you. Were you playing on an Australian server? Earlier today (I'm not sure exactly when. Maybe 3-6 hours ago) I had been going around NW airfield for a long time, and I went into the fire station (grey building with tall staircase/tower with windows. After taking a few steps inside, at the bottom of the stairwell, I saw a dude wearing an army helmet, and army camouflage, with an m4. He was standing over the body of another dude wearing TKS camo, with a green mountain backpack. I had my pistol out, because my m4 only had 2 bullets left. I didn't hesitate at all, and opened up 2-3 shots to the head. He dropped straight away, and I shot his head again just to make sure. Between the two of them, there was a ton of gear, and a lot of ammo. I took a UK assault vest, and the m4 ammo, along with the military camo clothing. I usually get the short end of the stick with these exchanges, so this was a nice change! I see a lot of people get killed (including myself) in that exact spot. I applaud your sportsmanship. Everyone who goes to the NW Airfield knows the risks. That's the game we're playing. Cat and mouse. I was worried I'd get killed while looting both bodies. It took a long time. A never-ending conga line of death would have been hilarious.
