Yep. This sort of attitude "I'd just use another computer - lol" makes me even more convinced that this is a very cheat-like thing and that many who use it even know that it is.
-
How do you suppose to explain it away as people having radios, as there are radios in game, which these people don't use! Apparently quite a bunch of guys commenting here even aren't aware that there are walkie talkies... or maybe it just is easier for them not have to find and maintain their radios. Don't play on night time servers? Server hop when it gets dark? Well congrats, mister.

Yes, use these and don't use VOIP. That's the proper way. Overtly using third party communication is cheating, because you don't have to find, carry and maintain your communication devices.

Do New Players Not Understand How Hard Core This Shit Is?
janol replied to bfisher's topic in General Discussion
Oh, I think there will be snipers there, probably with night vision gears later on. Not as lethal as the thermal ones, but maybe that's some consolation. These days, even NWA is like Sesame Street. -
Clear up your language, mate. No one likes to read that. There so, so many obvious ways Skype/Teamspeak gives advantage. Not only will people not overhear your secrets etc.. Also, they won't be alarmed to your presence. You might not know they are there, so your would be actions are not the only thing that matters. You forget that they might like to kill you, if they knew you were there, not just the other way around. Likewise, you never risk accidentally givin away your location (or, later camp or vehicle location) over the radio frequencies. And also its not the same as the hand-gestures, it requires no visual contact and it has no distance limit. And above all, most of us don't even know those signals well enough to use them effecticely.

Great, borderline insults from someone who can't seem to understand the meaning the word "constant". The point with that expression was excatly that surely you can agree to meet at a given place outside the game etc. You using Skype has adverse effect on players who would have heard you speak, had you used the ingame communication like is intended.

There are in-game means for communication, you know. They are there on purpose. In a perfectly clear sense, constant external communication over the game is much like giving your self a free walkie talkie, which cannot be intercepted.

How Much Time Has Passed Since The "outbreak" Happened?
janol replied to nudelwalker's topic in General Discussion
No matter where they are from - but it would be quite queer if so many foreign people constantly washed on the shores. In any case, they would have hardly spent years on sea without any information about the world. And, remember, this was supposed to have been a global event. -
No. Not suitable for this game. Go and try to create a safe zone with in-game means, if you want one (that would be pretty hard, is my guess). And by the way, "neutral" between what?
-
Good suggestion! I've been missing the "day n" counter. (although it admittedly made little sense as it was implemented in the mod.) I think it should show to actual time survived in game.

How Much Time Has Passed Since The "outbreak" Happened?
janol replied to nudelwalker's topic in General Discussion
This was recently discussed... I'd say what I said then: only few days. Characters are assumed to be new to the whole situation. World ended, you wake on beach or where ever. Also fruits. Also, the "zeds" would not be able to survive for years. etc. -
Hmm, yes. Indeed. I have been toying with the idea making a detailed suggestion about bicycles... what kinds there should be, what one could expect to find in Chernarus & how their maintainance repair and behaviour etc. could be modeled. They are the obvious choice for a post-apocalyptic vehicle, after all. Surprising that there are all these threads about cars but practically none on muscle powered transportation. But I guess it is the same with this as with the obsession on military weapons...
-
Well, bandits and trolls aside, I think I am going to follow OP's idea for starters. Even if few bandits take on the fashion, not all of them will, and at the same time occasional player or two might just decide not to shoot me. Thats better than nothing, you know.

This is some high development priority stuff we have here. I also want reading glasses in case my vision is blurred, so I can decipher the text on those (hopefully) blood-soiled pages. And while books are already in, why not some old news papers from the last days of civilization, maybe to read reports depicting the progress of the apocalypse.

Russian-style fur hats are a must! ...Also, burlab sack with eye holes. Preferably paintable.

Suggestion - disable VOIP during gameplay
janol replied to conan the librarian's topic in Suggestions
Honestly, third party communication is very, very close to cheating. Not only does it brake much of the point of advanced in-game communication, worse still it gives unfair advantage. Blocking it sounds bit harsh though. -
SUGGESTION: Wearing the United Nations Beret puts you into PVE-Only mode
janol replied to Charcoal's topic in Suggestions
Absolute no for any implemented mechanics like that one. On a more serious note, it is of course quite possible that something like this berret idea could in time become a small trend among medic-players, giving a limited signal to others (and at the same time, a new favourite headwear for trolls and bandits). -
SUGGESTION: Wearing the United Nations Beret puts you into PVE-Only mode
janol replied to Charcoal's topic in Suggestions
Suggestion: Put on the Beret. Assume you are on PvE only mode. Play the game. Blame any and all anomalies (getting killed) on alpha. -
Maybe you should have appreciated the intimacy of the situation. Cozy emotions, very DayZ.
-
I think (or rather THINK) that you don't know what the end-product will be like... This being an early alpha, you know.
-
I don't agree with your use of the word "we".

People in this thread can't English.

Zompocaplypse - How long ago did it happen?
janol replied to Admiral_69's topic in General Discussion
That's mostly just for performance reasons, I guess - if you want an in-game rationale, maybe try thinking of it as a symptom of the poverty ailing Chernarus. But, again, I am under the impression that premise of this game was that it takes place just little after the "Big Z" or whatever it is called: that somehow you survive and wake up on the beach, not even knowing what has happened. Also, I used to think that "DayZ" has double meaning, "Z" standing also for day zero, the day after world ended. (Don't really know about that...) -
Wanted to eat, but I was already using something. Silly me.

Ok, so fruits are fresh - i suppose they could stay that way for a week maybe (observing that most are rotten already). I don't think they are out of place, rather I suspect the time line is shorter than many seem assume. Indeed, in the mod you had fresh bodies of soldiers in Gr**n Mountain etc. Likewise, in the mod the helicopter crash sites seemed to be only few hours old, still smoking etc. (It was quite obvious that these copters were evidence of the last remnants of government & military, their crews having been turned to zeds.) I think the game was at least originally intended to take of right after the events, when dust has settled. As for the rusty cars and car wrecks, I can't quite explain that. It never made any sense in the mod either. Why aren't there any cars that don't need repairing? Surely there should be pristine vehicles aplenty. Best I could figure was that the z-disease's symptoms progressed in stages like this: 1) Slight headache 2) fever & nausea 2) Obsessive lust to destroy cars and machinery 3) Turned into flesh-eating zombie-like creature
