Merino's In-Depth Video Guides (Feb 11th: Updated to 0.34.115106 New Status Indicators, Rebalancing of Hunger, Thirst, Stomach, Blood and Health Reg)
WolfgangErikson replied to (TMW) Merino's topic in New Player Discussion
Hey Merino, I'm a big fan of yours and a TMW recruit as well. Thank you for the great info. I was curious about the new stomach and hunger changes that are coming. Have you even played on experimental yet? Do you think the changes are enough to warrant a new experiment? Were you investigating this now in "experimental", or if you were waiting until the "stable" patch. Are you possibly planning on waiting a few patches to make sure the changes "stick" before you re-do the whole experiment?Sorry for all the questions, and thank you so much. -
Off line mode for viewing of character and inventory
WolfgangErikson replied to blueleader's topic in General Discussion
Yes to viewing character offline. NO to editing or storing items offline. That is a very bad idea, it doesn't fit will with the type of game, and it also opens the door to cheating. All it would take to view characters offline would be to have the API for the server queries released. All it would do is allow viewing, if someone could program a web viewer or something similar. If the API was developed, the community would write all the code, and make the viewers. One benefit I see is the ability to show your clan-mates what gear you have, without constantly having to update them with your current status every time you die or find new gear. I imagine something similar to server status banners you see, except that it could show your character. Possible risks: -Ability to spy on another players gear if you have his Steam-name. Best protection would be to use a unique ID or something, but if they had that, they could spy as well. -Increased hive load from many thousands of queries. One possible remedy: a secondary server would could be made that held all data for the API to access, that way the actual hive that stores you gear isn't overloaded. This would be updated upon log-out for example. -
You killed me, and I applaud you. Maybe I had stuff you wanted, maybe you were just being cautious. I don't fault you, if it weren't for people like you, this game would be boring. Now, I have one simple request, I know you probably can't use all my gear, or didn't even want any of it. Kindly remove my backpack and place it on the ground. Walk away with more than just my beans, walk away with my respect. Even though Bandits, Murderers, and Survivors can't live in peace, at least we can live in harmony. Become a Hero Bandit.

Reflection of Experimental 33.114782
WolfgangErikson replied to koNtenT's topic in General Discussion
You can however tell when your stomach is getting full. I agree with not having bars, but there should be a better way than this to feel how full you are. I think there should be a "full" status that comes before "stuffed", or rather stuffed should appear much sooner before throwing up. I don't think I have ever eaten until I threw up. -
Has Anyone Ever Gotten Revenge On A Player?
WolfgangErikson replied to KevinPineapple`'s topic in General Discussion
I usually keep 2 fresh fruits (drenched in disinfectant spray) in my inventory. Not sure if it would kill them exactly, but I get a certain amount of satisfaction at least imagining that they are getting sick. -
I wondering this myself. I don't THINK it does, but I was kind of hoping that dean was planning on going this direction. It would be good for balancing out gear types and play styles. A fully geared bandit might not be very fast but he has got power. I scout type with only a pistol for a weapon, and light gear couldn't hold up very well in a fight, but he could escape more easily. I would say this is a must for immersion and also balancing.

Remember, this is survival game. Currently survival and finding food or the gear you want is too easy. With the new update, maybe a whole town is void of food, but so what? Survive! move on to a new town. This only makes the game more challenging, and I look forward to the increased difficulty. Not only that, did he mentioned what the wait time actually is? 30 seconds? 2 minutes? Whatever it is, I'm sure whatever it is, it won't be very long. If you really want to server hop for food or military gear, you can probably handle whatever the wait time will be.

Any Way To Disable The "missing File" Error Message?
WolfgangErikson replied to Rick1633's topic in General Discussion
That is our job as Alpha testers. I'm sure they do some amount of testing, but I'm sure that is more focused on the deeper level changes they are adding. Adding new items to the game is probably pretty simple, so they didn't spend a lot of time testing for that. It was probably just a typo or missing file, and things like that the community (obviously) can spot pretty easily and forward the bug report to the dev team so they can fix it. -
I agree with you, but this adds a nice gameplay element without having any kind of stupid artificial humanity system. Of course there will always be KOS. I just think this is the only natural kind of deterrent for it. Besides, I could always just kill said player, and wait a little, while to see if it turns, then kill it again. And non-infected wouldn't turn at all. So there is a sort of interesting gamble. There could be a time limit, after like 2 minutes as a zombie, it turns into a regular one, or just dies. I dunno.
-
That actually might reduce KOS. lol. If you die while infected, after like 30 seconds (or some other amount of time) you get back up as some sort of player controlled super zed. Of course you could be killed (a second time) and logging out as a zed would kill you (or make a regular zed). Revenge would be sweet. Seriously, this might be the only good solution to KOS and encourage more "catch and release" banditry.

Need Medical Assistance in DayZ SA ? Find Your medic here!
WolfgangErikson replied to TMWMarijke's topic in General Discussion
Not necessarily. The Trusted Medics of the Wasteland are called so because they have strict rules and guidelines for their members, and the adding of new members. You might argue that someone can just add [TMW] to their name and pretend they are part of the clan. It might seem easy to fool somebody and catch prey, however if the afflicted are careful, they can easily know who to trust and who not to. If anybody on this forum joins the TMW teamspeak channel, they can be confident with who can be trusted. On the teamspeak channel, tags are only given to those proven members. Tags range from [TMW] [Trusted] [Recruit]. Using these tags, it is easy to identify and communicate with those that will help you. I think most TMW members would have you join the Teamspeak after contacting you on these forums in order to communicate more easily, in which case you would be able to see their level of trust with relation to the clan. Remember, these are not just medics of the wastland, they are the "Trusted" medics of the wasteland. -
Also. Why do we hold the cans backwards when drinking? The hole should be at my lips, not my nose.

Improvised Firearms, and some thoughts on night vision.

I like the nail gun idea a lot. The flare gun would be great to for lighting up massive areas. Maybe only found (or most likely found) on the coastal areas? docks? -
A little bit of customisation please.
WolfgangErikson replied to enlgma's topic in General Discussion
Yes with everything except your choices for starter clothing. The way it is now is the way it should stay. 1 t-shirt, 1 pair of pants, 1 pair of shoes. Thats all that we should start with. I do think we should be able to layer clothing better than it is currently. We should be able to wear t-shirt underneath a regular shirt, underneath a jacket/sweater. I like the idea of being able to customize appearance however, adding a beard would be nice. Also more layers for headgear would be nice as well. -

There already are classes. You collect the gear you want. and BAM. That is your class. Other than the gear you collect? No. Also this is not the place for this kind of discussion. This is for people who need medical help. -
We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.
WolfgangErikson replied to 1S1K-Airborne's topic in General Discussion
How about when a player talks over VOIP. You own character thinks something like "I have a bad feeling about this guy" or "this guy sounds okay" a la the thirst messages. Degrees of trustworthiness wound depend on humanity. That way revealing your humanity sort of depends on your own decision. You can be silent or let others know you can be trusted. I think farming humanity is fine with this method. In real life often horrible people can seem really trustworthy. If a bandit wants to develop a lying SOB character, let him. -

Using gear deterioration to stop server hopping
WolfgangErikson replied to pteryx's topic in General Discussion
Just Make the loot system more similar to the mod. Spawning is based on locations of all players. No loot spawns near players. So if you go to a new server, chances are you will not find loot until you move to a new location. I assume loot only spawning on restart was only a temporary method to allow alpha release, similar to zombies. We know rocket is working on server hopping now. I have full confidence that whatever their fix is will be better -

Why are freshspawns now referred to as "bambis"?
WolfgangErikson replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Bambi does not carry the connotation of an inexperienced player, the term for that is noob, newbie, or another form of the same word. Bambi means someone who is easy prey. Because Bambi was a baby deer. They are easy prey because they have no food, equipment, or weapons to defend themselves. It has nothing to do with experience. If people meant inexperienced they would say noob. Even the best Day Z player in the universe, would still be a Bambi when he spawns on the coast. Also related to an earlier comment, Bambi was a boy. -
Color degradation from blood loss has to go (loss of visual fidelity)
WolfgangErikson replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
If blurriness and saturation last for more than a few minutes at a time, you are indeed playing the game wrong. Video Guide on Eating, Drinking and Regeneration by Merino Video Guide on Health and healing status by Merino If your screen is blurry and colorful, your blood has returned, but you are still badly damaged. Your health is still really low. In order to regenerate health you need to be well hydrated and well fed, and stay that way. You should eat everything you find (don't save it for later) and drink to full stomach as often as you can. You don't fully understand how healing and blood regeneration relate to hunger and thirst. Watch these videos. If you eat and drink regularly you will get the healthy status (shown in your inventory). While healthy and well fed and hydrated, you can recover your saturation and sharpness in just a few minutes, and be ready to fight or defend yourself right away. Never worry about blur or grayness again. Watch those guides, you wont regret it. -
In the game violence, banditry, murder, etc. is all simulated. Actual violence is not taking place only simulated in the game world. However when players create racist comments on notes in the game world, it is not merely simulated racism, it is actual racism. From a marketting and legal standpoint, this would be the explanation and reasoning. If racism was in fact the reason they removed this element of the game, I'm sure they only did it as a temporary quick solution until they can find some better way to handle it. It was probably just easier to do that at this point in the games development than try to find another solution such as banning or censoring that will allow players to use but not abuse this game functionality. They have more imporant things to work on than pen and paper functionality. I'm sure later on in development this will be re-implemented.
-
I don't think you really understood what I was saying. Being racist on VOIP is completely different than allowing players to alter the game. It IS creating content whenever you make a note. VOIP however is merely a tool in the game to allow players to communicate. You can't be offended at the game when a player is racist over voip, you can only be offended at the player. If there are actual game models, and racist game content, then they can be offended at the game. Despite what you believe, when a player writes a note in the game that has racist remarks on it, they are generating game content. And when they write a racist note in the game, they are generating racist game content. Only notes that have racist words / comments on them are racist. And no, I'm not saying they should remove all items in the game, or any items for that matter. I was simply explaining the distinction between types of racism in the game, and why one type might be a bigger issue than another, and why a company like Bohemia might take action to take action against one type, and not another. (I'm not saying they did, just providing an explanation. They could have removed that functionallity for other reasons) You severely misread my statements.
-
There is a major difference between racism over voip and racism through pen and paper in the game. When a player is racist over voip, it is merely a transfer of audio from one player to another, and the game is the tool used to do that, It is not actually part of the game. When you allow a player to write on the paper in the game, you are generating actual game content and assets. When the game content is racist, the game by extension can be seen as racist by allowing semi-permanent racist content to exist, regardless of who created that content. Furthermore, when the game relies on officially hosted servers, they are then storing that racist game content and providing it to all their players. With privately run servers this isn't as big of an issue as with corporate run servers. Either way though, it can reflect poorly on the game and the company when it's game world is riddled with racist assets. Remember, assets are different than simple misuse of the games capabilities (voip, or even arranging items on the ground to spell bad words) About the violence. In the game violence, banditry, murder, etc. is all simulated. Actual violence is not taking place only simulated violence. However when players create racist comments in the game world, it is not merely simulated racism, it is actual racism.

Have the pen "run out of ink" whenever certain words are written. Problem solved while still providing some sort of immersion.
