BadAsh (DayZ)

While being hungry, looking for cans of beans I found "The Hunger" by Knut Hamsun, about a guy running around in Norway starving himself. It was before I knew how to read the books, though, so I don't have it anymore, but I thought it could be fun to place it in a backpack in the wilderness somewhere, so another starving survivor could at first be thrilled about finding some loot out there, and then disappointed by the fact that it only contained a book about a man that is starving.

I did something similar. In one of those high-rise tower blocks that rings Cherno, on one of the stairs on the upper floors there is some rubble you usually have to step over by pressing "V". So on my way down I pressed V when I got to that point, but just as I did, my character apparently found a way to pass over that rubble, so he moves forward steps down to the landing, right in front of an open window, 7 or 8 floors above ground, and then of course my delayed "V" step goes into action, he determinedly take a big step across the window sill and fall down. He landed on the canopy above the entrance, and amazingly was completely unhurt. Don't know why, but probably lag or something at the moment of impact. As that was one of my first games I naturally thought that dying from falling down things had not been implemented in the alpha yet. So I climb the stairs on the neighbouring high-rise, find a canteen on the roof. As I thought I had just learned that falling down was completely harmless, why bother using those cumbersome stairs/ladders getting down? So I just step over the side of the building, and of course immediately fall to my death.

I wonder where you guys live, perhaps in a city getting used to all that artificial light lighting up the sky? Because here out in the country during winter and if it is cloudy it does indeed get pitch black. The game is completely realistic in that regard, since there is almost no artificial light besides player torches in the map.

I've seen several threads with players mentioning that they read the books they find. How do you do this? I can only choose "Inspect" when I pick one up and right click it, and then it only shows the cover (upside down). I cannot take it into my hands, and if I try to add it as a hotkey I just drop it on the ground.

Thanks for the help. I finally managed to read one. It was weird because I had tried the action bar before, but it wouldn't register so instead I just dropped the book. But after some tries the book finally got stuck to action bar and then I could read it. Possibly desync problems, although I could do everything else fine. @Gaint: Right clicking it when it is in inventory doesn't give an option for reading it, it only gives the inspect option. You can't drag it to hands when in inventory either, only the action bar method seems to work. I suspect that is a bug.

Thanks, I will check it out, though I am not considering making a server for DayZ atm. And regarding the second thing, of course. I was talking about server owners setting up their own written server rules and adhering to them (no spawncamping, only use certain classes etc etc depending on the game). If the rules they make are too strict or retarded, the market will automatically take care of it, since noone would want to visit their servers anyway, but of course blatant abuse, and generally using server privilige powers to your own advantage is an entirely different thing (usually included in the legal niceties that you have to sign).

Or at least just players that were killed by zombies (or dies from infected wounds). That should be essential in any zombie game.

Also, why do the bunnies growl and hiss? Scared the crap out of my first time I heard it. I was running passed it, but hadn't seen it, so it sounded like something attacking me from behind.

Really? I have had a couple of servers in other games and, and except for the legal niceties clause I have never encountered any company that dictated game policies to server owners. Usually they let the market take care of server owners who adhere to unacceptable server policies. I am assuming this doctrine is something special to DayZ then, and I must admit, even though I personally wouldn't want to play on a PvE server, that the concept of this kind of authoritarianism over server owners is a bit silly.

Also villages and towns of more than a handful of houses always have a waterpump somewhere. Keep looking for it until you find it, and then drink 20-30 times to really quench that thirst for a good long time. You will quickly learn the positions of the waterpumps at the nearby spawn towns, because it is essential you drink before doing anything else, then you should head out to one of the inland towns for loot (the spawn towns are usually looted anyways, unless the server has just reset).

Don't worry. He is also a complete and utter liar, since server host companies doesn't interfer with private server rules. Server owners can kick and ban players to their hearts delight as long as they pay their bills.

I have experienced that myself so many times. So now finally I got a good character with a complete military kit, so I decided to go down to the coast and be an hero, watching some of the spawn places in order to see if I couldn't teach some of those spawnbandits a lesson. Although a full 40 player server not much was going on during those couple of hours. There was one guy being chased by two others, but they were all unarmed so a couple of warning shots scared them off (all 3 of them fleeing in the same direction!). I am patient though, so I will continue doing it. Nailing one of those bastards will really make the game worthwhile for me.

Or playing at night in a tiny apartment with the girlfriend trying to sleep in the next room.

Maps are extremely common in apartment buildings, which means in the larger towns.

Ah, didn't know you could combine them. But I've found NW, SE etc maps as well, so are you sure you just need W and E to make a complete map?

Never ran into the compass bug. But they have indeed segmented the maps into only bits, so you will need a minor library to collect the entire map of Chernarus. Don't know what that is about.

Huh? Fresh kiwis aren't that rare.

In my most recent game I saw 3 of them in the same Fire Station. I didn't pick any of them up though, since I am playing solo anyway.

I've found all the items mentioned in this thread, and several times, except the press jacket, pilot helmet, the silencer and the Mosin compensator. So I would say those four items (the anti stab vest is quite common in military tents).

My first death in SA was from someone using a silenced gun to shoot me in the back of my head through a window as I was roaming through a house, unarmed and with no gear, in the nearby coast village where I spawned. Waste of bullets if you ask me, I could have been punched to death as I didn't even know how to get fists out at the time. But I guess it is an exemplary death with regards to learning how DayZ works and what kind of game it is.

What did they do in the mod to prevent combat logging? Having the ability to log out at any time seems pretty crucial in a game in case the real world unexpectedly imposes on you (as it seems wont to do).

I found a long range scope recently, but couldn't fit it to my m14. Is it only for the Mosin Nagant?

It was when you could actually spawn in Electro, I managed to fit a very good kit, talon backpack, plastic bottle, and not least a mosin and rounds for it. I went down to the harbour area to loot some more, decided to check out the roof of this factory. As I was climbing the ladder a zombie nearby aggros and runs to the bottom of the ladder. I thought I would test out the Mosin, never having fired it before, so I stepped closer to the edge of the roof in order to see the zombie, I accidentally take one step too many and fell over the edge and die. Another was when you could spawn near that town that had an airfield. Luckily I found a some excellent gear (low populated server) at the airfield, including hunters backpack and m14 with bullets. I get to the nearby town, when I see a female character in her underwear come running past, chased by a zombie. It all happens very fast and they turn a corner before I can react. I think, oh well, at least I won't see them again, and enter the nearest house where some canned goods grabs my attention. The next thing I hear is a *thud* and I begin bleeding, I turn around and see the female character in underwear brandishing a fireaxe, and that is the last thing I saw before it split my skull in the second swing.
