Weighing in on this realism thing... If you've ever thrown a rucksack on and humped 70 lbs or even 40 for over three miles you will know a few things... 1) Keeping the weight high, centered and compact is important. So extra shit like even the fireax or another weapon isn't likely to be comfortable, and you'd be almost guaranteed to chuck the thing after a few miles. I'd personally cut the handle of the ax off and stash that sucker somewhere in the ruck. All I'd be using it for is survival anyway, not zombies. Point being, carrying a weapon on the back and one in the hands isn't fun or viable, unless you can follow the rules I mentioned. So I think the current method is rooted in realism.

I just can't believe an idea of this calber merited four pages of discussion, unless it is everyone dogpiling OP to let him know how silly he sounds.

You must be looking for a canned experience. Go watch the Walking Dead. Dean gave us something open-ended. This is the way it plays. The world is full of assholes. You seem like a member of the entitlement generation, who thinks that someone should manage everything so that "the assholes can't do bad things that butthurt me". No. Man up and handle it, and stop crying about getting KOS'ed. If you don't like it, do it first, or play in a stealthy manner. You've demonstrated a tacit refusal or perhaps inability to comprehend and fully read my replies, so my final word on the issue is this. If you don't like it, play your way and enjoy the outcome. Or wait until the game offers a different experience, which I expect it will.

Most of the complainers in here have the same issue as the loudest voices in the Star Citzen Arena Commander forum right now. They need to realize that emotionally investing into anything that doesn't serve a purpose beyond entertainment is ridiculous. If this is you, evaluate your life, or lack thereof. It is a GAME. Hey dude. If you wanna RP as a survivalist hippie who hates anything military, go for it. Me, I'm gonna be geared to the hilt, and I have great SA. I'll see you before you see me, and I will shoot to kill, threat or not. That's survival. And as long as the game remains a loot then shoot exercise, that's what those of us who are right brain dominant, logical creatures will do.

They get their new stuff from somewhere. We go by "two is one, one is one" in the mil. So those barracks more than likely will contain new shit. I look forward to being able to loot some Damaged, Badly Damaged or occasionally Worn gear from military zombies.

Intentionally obtuse, or reading comprehension fail, the end result is the same. Two military airfields and two military installations in a 250km square area, the end result is if almost everyone dies, survivors are going to find plenty of military loot.

Determination almost never makes up for experience and ability. But in time you can trade one for the other. Ability, well. That you may never have.

I sense an RP fanboy here. Stop trying to compare DayZ to what you think it would be like in a real survival situation. You more than likely have no idea what a real survival situation would require. Here's a hint: most militaries train their men how to survive and their gear is tailored towards it. Rocket is prior mil,connect the dots.

Once you gain the feel of the game, you'll have a bit of a sixth sense about things. This is derived from reading the environment, disposition of the city so to speak. Doors, zombies, corpses, loot--all of it contributes. This helps but doesn't completely absolve you of the responsibility to take a stop/look/listen halt for a few minutes or maybe much longer depending how patient a player you are.

Those gloves suck. seriously who gives a shit about gloves? in dayz, those high speed oakleys dont serve a purpose. They sure as hell don't keep fingers warm, I would know.
