Why is this game so addicting?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to SaviorSixx's topic in New Player Discussion
Yes, but I'm missing your point. -
This. And if they genuinely weren't a server hopper, they've just learnt the hard away about suitable log out locations.
-
Also, motion sickness might be being caused by the brain seeing visual input (I'm moving forward, or something is moving) without having any other sensory input (balance, the feeling of actually moving, or something) to back up what the eyes are seeing.

Well, not quite perfect as described because, currently, the camera remains directly behind the player's head and their direction is controlled by panning. Therefore, the solution would have to be in two parts; 1) Whilst moving, the 3PP should be as it is currently and the view axis should be centred about the player to allow direction control. 2) Whilst stationary, the view should pan about the camera axis as described previously. 3) When the player reaches the edge of the screen, they should then begin to turn in that direction. 4) If the player moves whilst the view is off centre, either the screen should snap back to be directly behind the player's head and movement is in the direction the body is facing, with the view being as 1), or the player body turns ('snaps', if you will) to the screen centre and begins moving in that direction, after which 1) applies again. I'm not sure how easy that would be to implement or whether it would transition well, but in my head it works. :D

Really? Because the numbers I'm seeing suggest that it's lower spec'd than the one I linked... EDIT: Additionally, this caught my eye. I could probably just bash that into the case I have currently.

Not really if there's a lack of 1PP servers about. If 90%* of the servers are 3PP:ON then it's not a fair representation of what players want to use login stats for the server types. This is because the 10%* of the servers that are 3PP:OFF would be full pretty quickly, leaving only 3PP:ON as the option to play on. Anyway, I've not read the entire thread, but I watched the video in the OP and the points made there certainly compel me to play 1PP. Currently, I play 3PP outside (I prefer the slightly increased amount I can see in the periphery) and 1PP inside (because 3PP sucks inside). Having watched the video, I'm now likely to play on 1PP only servers if I can find them. Having said that, the LoS solution for 3PP looks like it could be the solution that suits everyone. I'm not much of a fan of the way the characters just appear and disappear but there probably isn't much that can be done about that. EDIT: Then perhaps another solution would be to pan the camera about its axis rather than about the axis of the player. Currently, when panning, the movement is centred around the player, who stays centred on screen, allowing you to see around/over stuff. If the camera moved about its own axis (i.e. the player does NOT stay centred on screen) then this would prevent people being able to see around corners. Therefore, looking left would mean that the camera would pan left about its own axis and the player would move to the right of the screen. Only once the player is at the right edge of the screen would the view begin to pan around the axis of the player. I feel diagrams would help with this but I do not have the time to make some. I'll do this later if the suggestion is not clear using words.

According to the Wiki, defib's revive unconscious players.

Conversely, I've found several Mosins and plenty of ammo (my last character had four full boxes of 7.62 ammo, plus loose change) across many lives but I have yet to find an M4 'in the wild'. I once found one on a dead player on the beach, but that was nothing more than pot luck. I guess mileages really do vary!

This. No amount of changes to the game, short of preventing players shooting other players, will stop some people shooting others on sight. This is simply because some people prefer that style of play (after all, if you kill anyone in eyesight, they're not a threat to you or your loot) and some people are just arseholes who enjoying being dicks and/or trying to ruin games for other people, because they find it funny or are just shit at it and angry or whatever. In DayZ, there is a simple rule: Do NOT get attached to either your kit or your player because, at some point, you WILL lose them. Sometimes at the same time, sometimes not. If you are not comfortable with this fact, you're playing the wrong game.

Nah, it was bought in Tesco many years ago. It's some HP something or other. The graphics card was an upgrade I bought not too long after first getting the PC and the RAM was recently donated to me by a friend (previously 2GB @ 600Mhz or so). I had planned to format the HDD and put Win7 on it, not sure if that would help with the performance or not. As for buying a new rig, I have my beady fish eyes on this but have many many other expenses to take care of before I can splash out on toys.

Right. So an entirely different method of doing something works fine. Gotcha.
-
Uh-huh. Riiight. Firing an automatic weapon into a group of five is a strange way to not want to kill them. ;) ORLY? That's funny, I met someone in game last week that was friendly. It turns out that they actually live 50 miles from me. I'd say meeting someone friendly that lives within an hour's drive of one's house is a very low possibility, and yet it still happened. Not everyone is an asshole.

Maybe not always (at least not in my experience), but every time bar one that I have found a Mosin, it was on that shelf. The other time was in the warehouse on the Three Valleys road to the West of Solnichniy, which only happened once and I ran around with it for hours looking for ammo before a Zed ruined it for me.

Why is this game so addicting?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to SaviorSixx's topic in New Player Discussion
I'd say it's pretty addictive. Why else would we keep returning to something that is so inherently flawed in its current form? Hell, it even runs like utter dogshit on my archaic machine, and yet I return in the hope that maybe it'll be a little better this time, maybe it won't lock up when I meet a bandit and maybe, just maybe, that axe swing will connect with a Zed before it tries tearing my eyes out. DayZ is a time thief, but I don't mind. /addict. -
Now I am sad.

CaseCeption - now whats going on here? o.O

Yes, putting a backpack inside a backpack takes up all of the slots in the parent backpack. When I've tried to do it, I've only been able to put empty backpacks into another backpack, although that might just be a quirk of the (fickle) inventory screen. -
Hmm. My machine has similar specs and runs like utter dogshit in anything larger than a small town. Seriously, on times I'm lucky to actually have a frame rate. It makes any form of combat entirely pointless. It regularly locks up for several seconds too which, as you can imagine, is as helpful as a handbrake on a canoe. I've not even bothered visiting Cherno or Elektro because I think the computer would just melt. I've tried some of the launch settings but they didn't seem to help much so any suggestions for increasing performance would be appreciated. Seriously, I'd be happy with a boost to 20fps in towns it's that bad. :( PC specs AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.3Ghz 4GB DDR2 800Mhz Gainward nVidia 8600GT 1GB Vista 32-bit I'm aware it being 32-bit means the system RAM is effectively 3GB.

The fuck is that loaded with, Dragon's Breath?

I Finally Made It! Got a Gun! Wait, no....NooOOooOoO
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to Decks13's topic in New Player Discussion
Yeah, that happens. First time playing a happened across a dead body complete with large rucksack, medical kits, food/water and various other odds 'n' sods. The real bonus was the combat vest with FNX45 inside and tricked out M4 with ammo. SWEET! I did what anyone in their right mind would do and snaffled it all quickly, leaving the mostly-naked body in the water. 10 minutes later and I've glitched through a railing on the side of a building and fallen to my death. FUCK! -
Something's Changed on the Experimental Servers...
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to hotrodskater's topic in General Discussion
Sounds... strange. I'll check it out next time my character snuffs it. -
It's like people don't read existing threads first before making suggestions or something. Loot spawning is mostly broken. Loot variety is very low because it's not been put into the game yet/is broken. Zombie AI is a placeholder and broken. Zombie numbers are very low because the zombie spawning is broken. Zombies, in fact, are just broken. Player spawning is mostly broken. It's an early Alpha, most of it is broken. This needs to be stickied or something, at this rate we'll run out of Internet before March.

Indeed. And those people also wouldn't appreciate how little you can see outside of the cone of light from a torch that has a narrow beam. There's this thing called "contrast" and whilst our eyes are quite good at it relative to a digital camera, they're still not fantastic in the grand scheme of things. Pitch black environment + narrow beam of light = fuck all seen outside of that beam of light. Granted, the cutoff of the light beam in DayZ is a little extreme currently and can do with softening a little (and having a little more spread added), but the periphery really does remain dark. Not realistic my hairy arse.

Clearly some people have never been out in the countryside at night with no streetlights in the area.

Merino's In-Depth Video Guides (Feb 11th: Updated to 0.34.115106 New Status Indicators, Rebalancing of Hunger, Thirst, Stomach, Blood and Health Reg)
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to (TMW) Merino's topic in New Player Discussion
Hey Merino, I saw your video about health/blood regen yesterday (after Googlebashing out of desperation) as my character had spent many hours viewing Chernarus in greyscale (fucking Zeds!). Thanks to your stupendously informative videos, he's now viewing the World in full colour again and is much healthier for it so you have my gratification. You have my beans, and if I ever meet you around Chernarus I shall help you out if I can. :beans:
