Why all this "need hunting rifles not sniper rifles"?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to DevilDog (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Likewise. My experience of people in milgear and/or gas/clown masks is that they will shoot without provocation or interaction. There has only been one exception and they still tried to kill me anyway, just in a different way. As such, I've modified my approach to people. Anyone in milgear/gasmasks will get shot if they pose a significant risk to myself or others. I also don't wear military gear, save for my black UK assault vest, but that goes nicely with my grey cargo pants, red hoodie (matches the red mountain backpack), black working gloves and black radar cap (was a pink baseball cap :D) -

Monkfish (DayZ) replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
Dslyexi posted a video about 1st person vs 3rd person and how that effects immersion. It was posted in the OP of the "Fix (not remove) 3PP" thread. EDIT: But let's not bring that debate here, there are thirty five pages of clusterfuckery already on the forum, we certainly don't need any more. -
Why all this "need hunting rifles not sniper rifles"?

Don't forget that whilst things like the M4A1 and M16 are synonymous with the US military, because those are standard equipment, they are not owned exclusively by the US military and are still sold around the globe. Granted, the numbers of them in existence in Russia will be low relative to the Russian equivalents, but that doesn't mean they won't exist at all. For DayZ, this should mean that the AK-47/AK-74M would be a far more likely find with something like an M4A1 still possible, but relatively rare. Although this all depends on how the devs view the matter. The M4A1 may just be a placeholder until authentic Russian equivalents are added. *shrug* -

Monkfish (DayZ) replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
Likewise. When I first started playing I used 3rd person outdoors in open areas, usually whilst moving through trees between towns, and first person indoors. So much easier to navigate. Most definitely this. After watching Dslyecxi's video about how much more engaging first person is, I've tended to play on populated 3PP:OFF servers. Earlier I was in a house in Kamyshova and, as I opened a door to leave, heard a bullet hit very nearby but did not hear a shot to accompany it. My assumption was that a sniper was some distance away and knew I was there, so I quickly backed back into the house and closed the door. The following few minutes were tense as I waited to see if anyone would come in, FNX45 at the ready. After a few minutes, I left via the other door and had to move very carefully between cover. It was fucking insane how tense that situation felt, not knowing if my next dash from cover would be my last, and it simply wouldn't have been the same playing in third person. I'm pretty sure it does support it. There's certainly TrackIR settings pre-configured in the movement settings. -
Chernarus is about 250km2 and a server with 30 players works out at a player density of 0.12/sqkm (this increases to 0.16 for a 40 player server). Put simply, the chances of bumping into someone in the wilderness are quite slim. Of course, the chances increase significantly in villages and spawn hotspots simply because people gravitate to those areas for the loot. Not seeing anyone in a specific area just means that, for whatever reason, they're congregated elsewhere on the map.

Ahh, wasn't aware of that. Thanks, I'll give it a try! Except that it isn't unsolvable. There are suggestions in this thread for fixing the exploit. Suggestions like 4th Wall, changing the camera axis and/or changing the position of the camera. The entire purpose of this thread is to discuss the pitfalls and merits of each suggestion, possibly come up with a different ones and see if the community can thresh out a final solution to the problem. It's the naysayers regurgitating the same tired "there isn't an exploit/just play on another server/it can't be fixed" that are perpetuating the thread.
-
Just leave. You're bringing nothing of value to the conversation.
-
I'm hoping you're just trolling now. I've already explained how. Failure to understand and accept this exceptionally simply point means that you have all four corners of fuck all more to bring to the table that hasn't already been posted and thoroughly debased. All of this is horseshit. All of it. It is possible to gain situational awareness using 1PP without completely exposing yourself. I've taken some screenshots to illustrate this because you and everyone else spouting the same bollocks seem to lack the ability required to convert words into pictures in your mind. This is me peering around a corner, as seen in 1PP... ...and this is how it looks from 3PP. Look at me not being completely exposed! Although, crucially, some of me is exposed which is the risk inherent in peering around a corner. This is the same as real life. And now, let's look at how 3PP can be exploited to gain situational awareness with zero risk of exposure... This is NOT how it works in real life. To even suggest that 3PP is more realistic than 1PP in any way is utter absurdity. Furthermore, continuing to press your argument along these lines when I have thoroughly and unequivocally deconstructed your argument and demonstrated why you're wrong is nothing more than ignorant trolling. So stop it. Everyone. EDIT: Typo fixes. Also, excuse the really shit quality of the screenshots, I have to take photos of my monitor because, for some reason, Printscreen just shows black.

Are there helicopter crash sites in game?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to -MadTommy's topic in New Player Discussion
Aye. I stumbled across that heli crash last night. It's South East of Willow Lake, near Rify. No loot but lots of rubbish. -
I think the weird thing with the body moving around in the first video is desynchronisation. From your guy's perspectives, you shot him in the head and killed him. From that player's point of view, they were probably still alive and in a different area and you weren't there (which may also explain why they couldn't hear you talking).

When you know you play too much Dayz :p
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
...your dreams occur in Chernarus and everyone is wearing a combat vest and ballistics helmet. Seriously, the last two nights have been like that. I think I might be broken. :| But anyway, let's have some fun with this... You know you're playing DayZ too much when... -
I thought we were gonna have radios?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to JesusDied4You's topic in General Discussion
If the 3PP threads are anything to go by, you will have nothing but disappointment. -
I know it's entirely possible to gain combat advantage using 1PP, but the difference there is that you have to expose yourself to an element of risk (being seen and/or shot) using 1PP. Using 3PP, you can gain that advantage without any risk of either. THIS is the exploit. Why is that so hard to understand? Server availability != preference. Furthermore, there are plenty of players out there who use 3PP for reasons other than the exploit.
-
Your "what if" does not negate the point that it is entirely possible to gain a combat advantage over someone else even if the other people are using 3PP themselves. It is not. I have demonstrated this quite clearly.

I thought we were gonna have radios?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to JesusDied4You's topic in General Discussion
Well that escalated quickly. -
Once again, someone else has missed the points I've made entirely. Even if everyone was using 3PP, someone could still gain combat advantage. Clearly you and everyone who shares this viewpoint is having difficulty grasping how this could be possible, so I've taken a screenshot from the video in the OP of this thread to demonstrate it, because a picture paints a thousand words... Imagine that everyone in this image is using 3PP because they're on a 3PP only server or something. Now, because the person behind the wall (the one in the foreground) is closer to the wall than the three standing in the background, they have a situational advantage over those three people. This is because the three people, even though they're using 3PP, cannot see what is directly behind the wall because of their distance to it. This is why 3PP is exploitable, regardless of whether other people are using 3PP or not. It's quite simple really, if you think about it and apply some logic. EDIT: Added post this is aimed at because it's on another page.

This. Pretty much all players play WoW in third person and there is no combat advantage gained in doing so. The two games aren't even comparable in this way. Hell, the two games aren't even comparable aside the fact they both feature online play and lots of players.

I thought we were gonna have radios?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to JesusDied4You's topic in General Discussion
Heh. Coming from the guy that's made the assumption radios will be in the game (four weeks after the ALPHA release) just because nothing has been heard on the matter. :P -
That's not the solution to fixing the 3PP exploit. How many more times must I say this?
-
I'm going to make jam. And maybe a pie.
-
I understand the words, but not their order. Or, in other words, what?
-
Ken. The point is this; If 3PP wasn't exploitable, then the person being suppressed would not know they were being flanked and would either have to risk catching a bullet to find out (by exposing a portion of their body to enable them to see), or would have to move somewhere else to get a better view, the latter of which runs the risk of running right into the flanking team (because they don't know where they are). Currently though, because 3PP is exploitable, the person being suppressed can see the flanking team with zero risk to their health (camera viewpoint allows this) and knows where that team is going and can prepare for them. This is in no way realistic or conducive to good game play.

The very first kill. Do you remember yours?
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to skoms's topic in General Discussion
My very first kill? Earlier this evening, which is quite some achievement, if you can call it that, given that I had 45hrs of game time across 2-3 weeks. Most encounters with other people ended with me getting shot full of holes in short order before I had chance to shoot back, usually because I'm not a KoS player and coming across one head-to-head often doesn't run in favour of this play style. Anyway, to the kill... I had left my last session last night in a two storey house in Krasnostav having been through the NEAF and collected an M4. Prior to that I had been to the shipwreck at Rify and had headed NW from there trying to find the airfield. Not knowing exactly where the shipwreck was at the time, I completely missed the airfield and ended up walking off the North edge of the map (nothing there but rolling green hills - most odd). Anyway, I rejoined and spent a few minutes in the house observing what I could see of the town to determine if anyone was about. I couldn't see anyone so I made my way back to the airfield to see if anything worthwhile was there. After checking the first prison building, I made my way up to the control tower, keeping a good eye on my surroundings as I went. Whilst in the control tower swapping a worn TU 'scope with a pristine one, someone took a shot at me. They missed, but it smashed a window. I immediately hit the deck and moved to the staircase, going downstairs as I went. I pied the corners, dashed downstairs and decided to wait under the staircase for my attacker, figuring that they may have thought they killed me as I dropped straight to the floor. I waited for a few minutes, then heard a voice nearby. I couldn't make out what they were saying but I assumed they were talking to me and remained silent so as to not reveal that I was still alive, just in case they thought I was dead. I was still under the stairs at this point, leaning out and aiming with the M4, ready to fire at anyone that entered. Given the hostile actions towards me, anyone was fair game. Then someone ran across the doorway, left to right. I waited, not wanting to reveal my position with only a slim chance of scoring a kill on a target moving across a small opening. My heart, at this point, was pounding. They moved back across the doorway, further back this time, so I still refrained from shooting, but decided that I should move and take them out, figuring they did not know I was there. As I moved out, they ran across the doorway again (left to right) and I fired, hitting them at least once, if not twice. I waited for a moment and could hear them moving around outside a little and then they groaned. I'd clearly hurt them quite badly. I peered through the window but could not see them, so pied the doorway without going outside. Nothing. Then I made a risky choice, but one that seemed less risky than the obvious, which would have been to run out of the door and pursue them. I ran back upstairs into the control tower and went outside onto the balcony. I figured they would be expecting me out of the doorway and could attack from above, out of sight. It was a risk as they could have had sniper cover, but I deemed it a risk I was willing to take. Another groan came from the South side from the building, and then things went quiet. I quickly climbed down the ladder on the North side and made my way around the rear (Westside, y0!) of the building. I went prone and slid out from the corner, slowly. There was a body on the floor and they were not moving. I put a single shot into their head to be sure they stayed that way. I wasn't sure if they were alone, so I circled the tower once to be sure before checking their kit. They had a Mosin, complete with bipod, a long range scope, an FNX45 with two spare mags, three canteens, several cans of (opened?) tuna and an ammo box absolute rammed full of ammunition. I swapped my M4 for the Mosin, took the pistol and mags, the ammo box, the canteens and as much useful kit (mostly food) as I could fit, then left the area to the East. My first kill was carried out without taking a single hit and I'm pretty sure I killed a server-hopping bandit. I'm just lucky their first shot at me missed. -
My hopes that you (and others participating in these threads) will make a rational, reasoned and sensible argument about this plummeted into the ground pages ago. The facts are simple and irrefutable; 3PP is exploitable (seeing things you wouldn't otherwise be able to see) 3PP is exploited (people gain situational awareness with zero risk to themselves) 3PP exploiting puts an imbalance into the game in the favour of the exploitee. Given the game is aiming for as realistic a vibe as is possible whilst retaining exciting gameplay, this is A Bad ThingTM. 3PP exploiting can be fixed without forcing one viewpoint or the other on players (some like 3PP for reasons other than taking advantage of the exploit) 3PP exploiting can be fixed without splitting the community up across 3PP:ON/3PP:OFF servers (People like to play with their friends and every person has their own viewpoint preference) WHY ARE WE STILL ARGUING ABOUT IT?

[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Monkfish (DayZ) replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
I'm sorry, what? Last time I checked, if I wanted to peer around a corner I had to poke my head out from behind it a bit because, you know, my eyes are in the middle of my head, not on the top of it, the side of it or on a stick 5ft behind it. Some of the posts made on this forum seriously make me wonder if people have actually been outside.
