    [POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners

Wrong. See my post below from the other thread.

Fix (not remove) Third Person Perspective

Fuck me sideways with a pineapple, is this still going? How many more times must I systematically and demonstrably destroy every argument that says 3PP isn't exploitable? It simply is, and if you think that it isn't, you're either blind, dumb or deluded. Or all of them which, going on some replies, would not surprise me at all.

What DayZ also needs to be even more realistic?

Restraining people, I believe. There's also a suggestion topic for another use for ropes; Frontier Justice. Gets my support!

Along these lines, I had a thought about direct communication that might be interesting to implement, assuming the devs aren't already adding it. Whilst making my way through the trees near Solnichniy, I was keeping my eye out for bandits and newspawns, intending to protect the latter from the former if at all possible. I spotted a newspawn running about in the town and wanted to contact them, but was too far away for direct communication but didn't want to risk getting closer. This then gave me the idea of shouting. Currently, direct communication is at one volume and over a fairly small distance. I think it would be cool to add an option to shout, which would just increase the volume of your transmitted voice and transmit it over a longer distance. The further you are away from the source, the greater the echo that is applied to it. The limit could be something like 100m and allow you to contact people over a greater distance. Obviously, anyone else in earshot would hear you so you'd have to use it carefully, but it could add an interesting dynamic to encounters.

    What is your survival style?

I've not voted because I'm a mix of two. I'd class myself as a Lone Wolf Hero. I spend the majority of my time on my own out in the wilderness, moving as quietly and carefully as the situation requires. The 'Hero' part is because I detest unwarrented newspawn killing, especially at range with a scoped Mosin, so I'll immediately kill anyone that I find doing it. Similarly, my experience of anyone in full milgear and a gas/clown mask has been a bad one, especially at spawn areas, so they get popped on sight too. I'll also help newspawns where I can. In fact, I died yesterday whilst doing it. I had headed up to the hill overlooking Electro to check for snipers and then the game crashed out. When I logged back in (possibly into another server, I forget), I heard someone behind me and turned around to find someone in milgear and a gas mask stood about 15m away, just looking at me. There was an awkward moment where we both stood and stared at each other for a few seconds before I raised my Mosin and landed a shot clean to their centre mass. It didn't kill them and they then managed to avoid my subsequent (and somewhat panicked) shots and gun me down with an M4. Annoyingly, my Mosin had a pristine long range scope and worn bipod (that I had previously liberated from another bandit), about 60rnds of 7.62 in an ammo box (along with a similar amount of 5.56 and .45ACP) and my backpack had two medkits and four canteens in, so they probably patched themselves up and used the Mosin to snipe anyway. I cursed.

    Why ARMA Engine?

1,035.55 km2 according to this. Mind you, in Just Cause you can jump out of a jet and hang from it with a grappling hook, so I'm not sure how suitable the engine would be for something like DayZ in terms of general movement, weapons ballistics and, you know, any hint of realism.

    Why ARMA Engine?

As for the MMO part, people are also assuming the server limits will remain at 40. I'll bet my left bollock they won't be that low once the game is at Beta/full release. A 250km2 map would easily support 150 players, providing the server architecture can take that sort of loading/bandwidth. No reason why not, really, if they get the server coding right. And is 150 players/server more like an MMO? Hell fucking yes.

    Why ARMA Engine?

Ignore Kiwi, he's already proved elsewhere that he's a troll with nothing intelligent to bring to the conversation. Anyway, this thread amuses me. People bitching about how shit the engine is when they have zero clue what goes into making one. I'm pretty sure they'd be pissing and moaning if Rocket said in 2012 that they were making a standalone and then nothing was heard for three years whilst they built a new engine from scratch despite already having one that's perfect for purpose. Honestly, it's like people don't think for more than 0.635 seconds before starting a topic to have a whinge about something.

Vehicle overhaul in DayZ compared to ArmA

And if the mod was anything to go by, the zombie AI wouldn't be getting rewritten from scratch ;). One reason the game is being built as a standalone is to get past the restrictions of having it as a mod of Arma II. Plus it gives the devs an essentially clean slate to start from again, learning from any mistakes made in the mod. Anyway, heli's could be implemented and not break the game, but they'd have to be balanced carefully. A mix of making them difficult to find/repair and very difficult to fly would mean that only a few could use them with any great effect. They would have to be unarmed though and, I imagine, fairly small and/or fragile so that small arms fire could cause them some significant concerns. They absolutely shouldn't be armed though. In fact, I'm not even sure military helicopters would fit. Smaller civilian helicopters may be be better suited. Dunno, I guess it's ultimately up to the devs. They may well already have a plan in place and in motion.

    Any chance of some supplies?

You've found a fountain? Drink until you get the "My stomach feels full" message, you'll be good for about an hour water wise, give you time to find food and canteens/water bottles. Check out Merino's excellent (stickied) guides on the health system in the New Player section. EDIT: Also, get the fuck out of Electro unless you have a gun and can use it, you'll very likely get filled full of holes otherwise.

    My friend, the psycho

I've spawned in Novy and immediately been set upon by 3-4 Zeds as the area hadn't been cleared of them. Suffice to say, I died pretty quickly. As for your friend? Bullet to the back of his head. It's for everyone's safety. ;)

M4 in your hands and Mosin on your back, or visa versa?

Being able to completely strip an M4 and store it in a backpack appeals to me for some reason. And, like you say, you could give the bits to someone knowing it'll take them enough time to put together that you'll be able to slip away without getting shot in the back. This would also give the option of introducing more components to make different versions of the M4 (like the Mk18 CQBR, with its shorter upper receiver/barrel). The same could also apply to the AK-47/74M and its variants. Similarly, being able to strip a pistol down into its component parts (frame and slide) means they can be gifted with a lower risk and introduces the option of further customisable parts (different slides, for example, polymer frames for reduced weight, that sort of thing).

M4 in your hands and Mosin on your back, or visa versa?

This. After killing a bandit carrying a pristine M4 (mine was mostly broken), a Mosin with long range scope (which was nice as I was looking for one) and an FNX45, I realised I couldn't carry both rifles at once and had to make a choice about which one I should take. I opted for the Mosin, and here is my reasoning... 1) M4 is very good at close quarters, but not so much at range. 2) FNX45 is good at close quarters, and not at all at range 3) Mosin is excellent at long range but far too cumbersome for close quarters The choice is a fairly logical one for me. To be combat effective, one needs to be able to engage at range and at close quarters. Given you can only really carry one rifle without fannying about throwing stuff on the floor, and the M4 doesn't really do range, the Mosin is the obvious choice. I deemed the huge advantage at range for the Mosin to outweigh the effectiveness of the M4 in close quarters compared to the pistol. Plus I don't have to fanny about throwing stuff on the floor to use a different weapon.

    Smash and Grab...... almost

Nice job flanking them, but I'm wondering, given the huge risk you took running out there, why you didn't... 1) Take the guy's backpack as well (it contained ammo and a medkit as well as some other useful stuff) 2) Take cover behind the bale. If you'd gone prone, your attackers might have also thought you were dead. 3) Find out where the other guys are and shoot the shit out of them

Vehicle overhaul in DayZ compared to ArmA

Because if tanks were added, the expectation would be that you could use the main gun on them. If that were to happen, the balance of power for the tank driver/owners would be swayed so massively in their favour that it would break the game. The way to balance it would be to add RPGs, but they'd have to be common enough that, should someone roll into town with a tank, you'd have a good chance of finding an RPG and taking it out. Making RPGs that common would then result in people picking them up and blowing up buildings willy nilly, or blowing up newspawns for shits and giggles (the same would also occur with the tank, btw). In short, it would break the game. The only way to add tanks that wouldn't break the game would be to add them but be unable to fire the main gun, or possibly even the HMG/LMG that would be on it, so they'd essentially become big, slow, APCs, and if you're going to do that then why not just add APCs? At least then the forum won't crash under the weight of all the "WHY NO TANK GUN FYER SHIT GAME!!!!" threads. Any helicopters that are added should be of the unarmed transport type for the same reason. A Littlebird, whilst cool and fun, would require something like a Javelin be added to the game to balance it, and just what the fuck. It's a zombie apocalypse in Soviet Russia, not Battlefield n. The only benefit to having a heli should be that you can travel large distances quickly and possibly have a flying platform to shoot conventional weapons from, but heli's should be hard to find, hard to fix (scarcity of parts) and practically impossible to fly for the average person.

    Communication Breakdown

Are you using VOIP to talk between yourselves? If so, that may be the cause of the 'feedback' (I've only ever seen it when people are using direct communication with their buddies close by who are using VOIP, so I'm assuming this is the cause). Try switching off auto-detect or use a different button for PTT in whatever VOIP software you're using.

Don't be daft. What we need for an authentic experience is jetpacks. STEALTH JETPACKS. WITH GUNS.
