    Gentelmans way to mosin around.

    I think right now the only way to help new spawns is find a hide with a clear view of the spawn points. I'm not sure of specific points, other than trying to ensure you have decent cover and a good view of where spawns are likely to be running across. In the towns such as Cherno, it's a little more complicated. It can be hard to tell the motivations of people at a distance. How do you discern whether or not they are a new spawn? Just by their gear, or lack thereof? I suppose seeing a fully-geared player brutalizing people having little more than a beanie and a fire extinguisher would be fairly obvious...maybe some bandit hunters could chime in with some ideas here. I've haven't played that role yet, but I can see how it could be personally rewarding. I have taken a few rooftop snipers though. One of the best things to do is when approaching a town, ask yourself, where would I be? It's not a bad habit to carefully scan the rooftops of the tallest structures. Depending on the town there may be no activity for long stretches, but it sure is rewarding to grease someone you spot getting into position on a roof in Cherno. Nothing beats that LR scope for intel gathering. In my limited experience so far with the Mosin, that LR scope has easily been the most useful piece of equipment when I have it in my inventory. When I have had it, I've used it far more for recon and ingress/egress decision-making than taking shots. With no binocs yet in-game, it would be great to just be able to use the LR scope even if you didn't have a rifle on which to mount it.

    Gas Canister and portable gas lamp

    Great stuff! I just recently discovered how useful these were, using one to loot the shipwreck. Much better than a flashlight for looting. The way light sources are now, the flashlight is such a bust anyways and can be seen from a long way off, shining right through the building walls. If I'm going to look like a damn mini-supernova from a distance, may as well have the best light possible for looting. The lamp is way brighter than the flashlight, and illuminates in all directions.
  3. I used to run a round with several 60 round coupled mags and shit-ton of 5.56 and only fire in pvp engagements. You get a little more cavalier about it though once you've died a number of times with all that unused ammo. Plus I haven't been able to stockpile (as quickly) that much ammo since the last update anyways. My play style has changed/evolved somewhat, and now I consider myself deployable with a Mosin and a 20-round box of 7.62
  4. Good show everyone, this is really good stuff. Still trying to find a transmitter myself. I'm leaning towards built-in (since last update) easter eggs myself, but even if it is someone having fun transmitting this stuff, maybe even over multiple servers, that still shows the possibilities to be had with this functionality...

    Gentelmans way to mosin around.

    Good score. You have a Mosin, LR scope, and a compensator, which right now makes the rifle ridiculously accurate. If you're not already, eat until you have the "healthy" status next to your toon. Eat everything you can find, and find a well where you can take 15-20 drinks at a time. Eat until you're stuffed, then do it again as soon as you are able. Once you have the healthy status, you will be able to potentially withstand more injury. And once you're there, keep eating/drinking/refilling water whenever you can. Totally up to you how you want to roll next. After all, "it's your story". It would be a shame though to be shot and killed without ever having a chance to use the Mosin. So you could sneak around, and practice your marksmanship on Z's at a distance. Make sure to change your position after you take a few shots. Don't get to attached to all that new gear though. Go ahead and learn the Mosin, but also learn where it spawns. Not much stuff spawns now at the military bases and airfields since the update, so don't worry about those locations. If you want, check the online map and pick a destination. Or, just explore! You now have the advantage and ability to reach out and eliminate threats to your well-being, so practice your stealth. Stay well off of roads - follow them if you must but do so 100 meters to the side, preferably on the lower end of the elevation. Try to stay inside treelines whenever possible. Use the CTRL button and look around/zoom look a lot while on the move. If you're sprinting to cover large amounts of ground, stop in cover every once and a while and look around, and make sure you're not followed. Be cognizant of silhouetting yourself near tops of hills, where a distant player could see your character against backdrop of sky. Whatever you decide to do, have fun! And realize that even when you get killed next, you could get most of that gear back with a minimum of fuss, if you know where to look and how to stay alive while searching.

    shotguns are incredible....

    I know that the selective fire for the M4 works (I have to bind double-T [2xT] to get it to work) even though you have to test fire to make sure it's either full or semi... Can you do the same thing with the shotgun in game? Anyone had any luck switching fire mode to both barrels?

    BOOK EXCHANGE CLOSE FOR BUSINESS

    Damn @MateJ. I had a copy of the New Testament today that I picked up in Barezino. Unfortunately I had to discard the good Book, in favor of a box of ammo. If I come across it again, I'll try to remember this topic.

    Other Players' Names

    You can hit 'P' to bring up a list of players currently in that server. If it was a low-pop server, thay may explain how he knew. Afaik, currently there is no way to actively identify people you meet in-game, without conversing in chat and/or guessing from the 'P'layers list data.

    DayZ Addiction.

    I hear y'all. Totally there too. 81 hours in. I am now operating with a significant sleep deficit. Been staying up WAY too long after work. I was telling someone about how I have not been able to play a game, any video game, for more than a few hours, since...I dunno, the 90's. Yes, this game is hugely addictive. And I can't wait to see what's added next ! DayZ made me buy new Magpul MOE furniture at a gunshow this weekend, for a perfectly good Colt 6920 M4 rifle that's been sitting in my safe. I picked up the stock, grip, handguard, and vertical post, all in Flat Dark Earth. Oh, bought a DOD-issue medkit. Because it looked cool. Because I was thinking about this damn game the entire time I was at the show. Usually if I go to something like that, I'm after something specific, and certainly not thinking about some video game. But I admit, the rifle feels much better after the upgrade, especially the handguard. The stock handguard for a Colt M4 carbine is a big, fat thing. Thanks DAYZ &%&%*$*# But seriously I am having a great time with this game.

    The players of DayZ Ruin the game

    Not to derail the thread, even though this is the eleventy-teenth post complaining about KOS... Just wanted to point out that you don't have to necessarily go to the military bases and airfields to get decent firearms and ammo. Since the latest update, weapon spawn rates are way down at those locations anyways. Check hospitals. I have found both the M4 and the Mosin in hospitals, several times since the last update. In general, check big buildings - not the 4 (5?) story apartment complexes, but any unique-looking structure in town. *cough shipwreck cough* Rifles, pistols, and ammo for both are actively spawning at these locations since the last update. Sorry for interrupting your KOS discussion. Carry on.
  11. Based on your post I doubt this very much.
  12. I've seen this topic bandied about since the most recent update, but the threads about this seem to veer off into the differences between hardcore and public servers. What we would like to know is: are private hives now available? The release notes state: "Database: Support for sub hives. (Sub-private, Hardcore/Regular public)" This would seem to imply that private servers have been enabled (per the dev notes it is something they wanted to include soon), as well as the hardcore/public hive split (which we already have info on). Is "Sub-private" referring to private, password-protected servers ? How is this implemented? Will hosting providers be amending their control panel to include an option for switching between private and public ? I think there's a fair amount of current/potential server operators out there wanting some additional info on this. Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - as of yet I've been unable to find anything conclusive. Can anyone confirm this functionality?
  13. Yup. Fair enough, I haven't seen any rule changes, etc, or any private servers in the browser for that matter. Suppose they'll get to it soon enough. :thumbsup:
  14. Ha, yeah, right. "suck dev tit" if I recall. How very cosmopolitan.
  15. You need to calm the hell down. Hold their feet to the fire? Who do you think you are? You had plenty of warnings things were going to be in an unfinished state. Go back to "C0d", as befits your namesake.
  16. WTF. Not even in the same ballpark pal.

    Vehicles: For or against them?

    Segways !!
  18. I wish they would include the Sig P226 - it's a fairly common full-size duty pistol used by police forces and military around the world. Picked up a MK25 over the holidays, damn fine pistol. Also used to own a P226 in .40 for several years. Sigs cost a lot but have a solid rep for reliability and longevity. If they did include the Sig 556 rifle, it would have to be modeled to be a cut above the M4, in terms of overall reliabilty/accuracy.

    Shot dead in cold blood in NEAF

    Wha...what ??? The clip is coming out of the magazine? Whatchu smokin Sorry man but you're just not making any sense at all there. About the only firearm in recent history where this would be the case is the M1 Garand.
  20. From the changelog: Database support for sub hives. (Sub-private, Hardcore/Regular public) I take this to mean that private hives are now enabled. Either the private hive will be maintained at the provider level, or in a separate database at BIS. Either way I don't see them releasing the server files yet. But if I'm interpreting that correctly, the hosting companies should begin to offer the private hive option (thus password protect). Extrapolating, if private hives are enabled then IMO so should other yet-to-be-released admin functions - kick/ban/etc. I'm hoping we can get some more info on this.

    private Hive after patch

    The 'hive' is referring to a centralized database stored on servers run by BIS. The 'hive' database contains all game info about player locations, status/location of loot, etc. All Public Servers report/send their game info to the centralized 'hive'. This is why when you log out of one Public Server, and log into another, your toon is in the same place, with the same gear, etc.
  22. Don't be such a Negative Nancy. There's a lot of us that like being near the ground floor of this iteration of DayZ, and we look forward to these additions

    Pc build for Dayz and future gaming

    I would go with Intel, IMO. Some on here have said the Arma engines favor Intel and Nvidia, though that may just be BS. I have i3770k, 1150 mobo, 16 GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Nvidia 780 GTX, 750w PS. Am upgrading this weekend : i4770k, so I also need to buy socket 1155 mobo. As others have mentioned, if you can spend a little more now, do it. i4770k - these are actually cheaper right now than their predecessor, the i3770k. Don't skimp on the video card either. I sold my 770 GTX and with the money from that went to a 780 GTX for another Benjamin. If you go this route the video card will be the most expensive part of the build. But it's worth it. How much so is debatable for a game like DayZ SA which is more processor-dependent, but it's a good feeling to know you can run just about everything on ultra high settings Don't get a cheapo PS either, but it doesn't necessarily have to be Gold-series. Get at least 750w. he SSD makes a big difference for your OS/app load times, but is not necessarily confer a big FPS bonus for the game. But if you've never had one before and use one for this build, you will never want a regular sata drive again, except maybe for storage. 256GB is plenty for OS and a few games. Beyond that, the mobo doesn't really matter that much unless you want to water cool, have 3 BIOS versions, etc. Just get one that supports the chipset and SLI if you want to eventually... single card solution is fine though and you'll want to upgrade in 2-3 years anyways. Get decent RAM but doesn't have to be bad-ass platinum heat-spreader stuff. May as well get 16GB the way it's priced now. No real need to spend a ton here for ultra-high speed RAM and tweak in BIOS, etc... performance gains will be negligible. For the OS, go ahead and get Windows 8. It does have an appreciable performance increase under the hood, compared with Windows 7. Yeah the metro interface with all the tiles sucks balls on a desktop... just download ClassicShell - it's freeware, and will make the PC boot straight to the desktop, and get rid of all the corners/charms crap. Case is mostly an aesthetics. This is something I traditionally have not cared much about in all the past builds, just opting for a solid case with good ventilation. That is, however, until I ran across the Corsair Vengeance C70 Steel ATX case in military green. The damn thing is modeled after an ammo box, complete with hinges on the side. Check it out, you'll dig it. I build rigs that are just shy of bleeding-edge but right on the performance/price sweet spot, use for 1 - 1.5 years, sell while value is still good, and rebuild. These are just my suggestions for building a new rig for DayZ. Best of luck with your new rig, and besides half the fun is putting everything together, and crossing your fingers and saying a silent prayer when you push the power button on for the very first time and hoping you at least see the BIOS splash screen! :)

    private Hive after patch

    From the patch notes, I assume that "sub-private hive" means it will still be controlled at the provider level (no server files provided) but that you could PW protect if you want. Kind of curious about that also. I would also think the sub-private hive would obviously be a different database than the regular, public hive. So, *if* that's the case, will the provider allow renters to switch from sub-private to public at will? We know the gear won't xfer, but it would be a good option to be able to PW-protect your server to go RP with friends or whatever, then later on make it public again. I know there's not a lot of info out yet, just thinking out loud.
  25. Damn. Stuck at work. Anyone find berries yet?
