  1. So I'm new to Day Z, never played the mod. After watching a metric assload of youtube videos of it, I decided I needed to play. Holy crap. This game is probably my favorite game to date. Simply because it makes you think, makes you feel, and definitely makes you not trust people. Anyways, I've got about 35 hours in it so far, and have only had a handful of player interactions. I avoided populated servers to adjust to the steep learning curve. After awhile I became more comfortable and started playing in close to full servers. Some of my best interactions after switching are as follows. First death: Was a fresh spawn, running around town like a scalded dog, started looting a house. I was crouched, in an attempt to be stealthy once inside. I'm in the kitchen, hear a noise, turn towards the front door... And theres a guy with a fire axe wearing a green motorcycle helmet just looking at me. I waved, typed in direct chat that I was friendly, and in the few seconds it took me to start to worry, he bum rushed me, and killed me with an axe. Damn... First airfield: So after having respawned and putting about 3 days into a new character, I decided I needed to find an airfield. After much research and trial and error, I found one. The N.E. airfield. I thought it was the N.W. airfield before I realized how big the map actually was. Anyways, after slinking around through the hangars, I started to question the supposed loot that is always here. So after finding nothing in the hangars, I peruse my way through the control tower, and found a few odds and ends. No weapons, just some soda, and clothes. Starting to really think this was a waste of my time, I move to the prison. Now i have had my head on a swivel, because I had read the airfields are a high traffic area. I hadn't seen anyone at all so I figured I was in the clear. Well I roll up the stairs in the prison, and I noticed a pistol and mag laying on the floor. I immediately run over and grab them, then turn around to head into the bunk room. And there is a dude sitting there, full tactical gear, pointing an M4 at me. I put my hands up, told him over voice that I was friendly, just passing through, and was on my way out. He does the one handed wave. the side to side wiggle, and moves so I can go down the stairs. Just as I clear the handrail to make the stairs, I wave at him as a thank you for not killing me, and he shoots me in the face. Ugh. Bandits being bandits: By now I'm pretty comfortable with the game. So I have decided to run the coast, and help new spawns. At this point I'm looking for player interaction because I'm lone wolfing all the time. So I'm running down the east coast, hadn't seen anyone. Which was odd because the server had 30 people in it. So as I'm making my way down the treeline,( because walking down the road is a deathwish), I approach the N.W. corner of Solnichniy. I sat in the treeline there for about 10 minutes just looking for movement and listening for people. And the universe provides. I hear gunshots. Immediately after the shots, I see a poor new spawn running around, repaiting the town red because he is bleeding from probably 5 spots. There are shenanigans afoot and I will end it! So I cross the west road going out of town to the opposite treeline to gain some altitude. As I'm climbing, I found the quarry, which is a really good overwatch. So I post up, and start scanning for the person responsible for the death of an innocent. Scanning... scanning... scanning... boom. Got movement. There, probably 250 meters away, I see a prone body on top of a water tank. I zoom in, and nearly crap my pants. There are 4 guys laying prone, all facing different directions sniping people. And then they spotted me. Good lord, they must have had long range scopes because they got pretty close. But luckily never scored a hit. So as I watch them from afar from behind a rock, one of the guys gets down, and heads for my treeline. I decided that I was outgunned, and outnumbered so it was time to cut and run. As I bushwack southward in the tree, Im constantly scanning expecting an ambush. And then, low and behold, I see a guy walking crouched about 30 meters below me. He has a mosin out, payday mask, the works. I hide behind a tree and make contact. I ask his intentions, and he states he's heard shots while passing through and is trying to get outa dodge. I ended up opening some beans for him, and giving him some mosin ammo. We had decided that together (both with mosins), we could pick at the bandits a bit and maybe cause them to move along. Unfortunately upon return to town, they weren't in their normal spot. We saw the running down the road at about 800 meters going north. I chose not to pursue because my new partner needed to make a rendezvous at the N.W. airfield with some buddies. I pointed him in the right direction, gave him my compass, and we went our separate ways. This game is honestly the most intense thing I've ever played. Lone wolfing all day is kind of a drag, and its hard being a lone wanderer in the pursuit of justice. But its totally worth it for those rare few minutes where your sweating trying to keep eyes on a bad guy, your back, and in every direction at once.

Am I naive in wanting to learn the map myself?

The in game map was a god send for me. Ive logged about 30 hours into the standalone, and i know the N.E. coast, extremely well lol. Lots of early deaths and respawns there. It wasnt until I found the map pieces that i realized exactly how large the map really is. I frequented the N.E. airfield alot, thinking it was the N.W. airfield. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I was incorrect. And you really will pick up on the spelling from the street signs pretty quick.
