We do? That wasn't the question. -

Has Rocket ever discussed his opinion on 3rd person? I'd be interested to know what he thinks about all this. -

Bandits need healing too, don't trust someone just because of their hero skin. He might be a bandit teams medic. -
24/7 Daylight Servers... UGH?
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to Jεricho's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I see we have differing opinions about server hosting. I believe that Rocket shouldn't let people modify his game to their liking. But, I fear I'm alone in this opinion. You should really try to get past this "forcing everyone to..." attitude. Nobody is forced to play night, there is more than 1 dayz server. And the OP isn't trying to find enough people to play at night, he's disgusted at the notion of making the game easier by modifying the server. There's really no need to get all dramatic like we're forcing you to play in the dark. We're discussing server settings, not player gameplay styles. ------------------------- On the topic of Arma2 being "pitch black" and unrealistic. After this discussion came up a long time ago when arma2 was patched to be darker, I took note of how dark it is in real life, and I found that with a bit of adjusting the gamma/brightness, I can make Arma2 appear exactly as dark as I see in real life. In fact, I can crank up the gamma and make it WAY easier to navigate than in real life. Sure, there are nights with a full moon and clear sky, and it'll be not so dark, but there's also those nights in Arma2. I just can't help but feel like people need to go out into the forest at night and see just how difficult it is to navigate. Your eyes can adjust, but it's still going to be difficult. That's why they invented night vision. -

I actually saw someone on that 5 person server, I think they shot at me, or at the zombie chasing me. They had a vehicle and stuff. It was my first time playing at night in far too long, it was fun and refreshing. I left a fully stocked tent near the military tents in cherno. US3279 - AK & AKM plus ammo, most tools, camo clothes & two military flashlights. It's semi-hidden, beside a building, in a walled compound. Chemlights around it, but not for much longer. -

Expert + 3dp, sure, I'd play that. But, I'd rather the mod not have that option. At least not on the official hive. In fact I'm gonna go play on an expert server for the first time in a month, I'll be running around cherno-elecktro if anyone wants to kill me and take my stuff.... or team up. I'm sure there won't be many people in the server. Maybe if we get a few people in those servers they'll grow in population. I just get so bored with no human contact. Edit: I'll be on US 3951 they call it 'mercenary', but looks like the same as expert. Edit2: switching to us 3279 its got 5 people! -
24/7 Daylight Servers... UGH?
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to Jεricho's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
"my screen is black" LOL It's night... use a flashlight or another light source. There's a huge difference between setting up an open sandbox environment and playing an open sandbox game. It's fine for a player to be attracted to daytime, it's a human instinct. But, when people start setting up their environment to cater to the players desires, it stops being open to those (like the OP) who want to play it their way. It's still a sandbox game, but you've set the rules. -
I see you cant alt-f4 or exit anymore. Does that mean hacking has been dealt with?
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to Mr Radar's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Maybe because you've haven't seen the alt-f4'ing abuse first hand? I started playing before hacking was much of an issue, but alt-f4 ruined lots of potentially amazing scenarios for me personally. Nothing tears you away from having fun like someone taking the ball and going home in the blink of an eye. Quit the game to avoid script kiddies, but keeping a huge exploit in the game is no defense. If players could be trusted, there wouldn't be a hacking issue. -

bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I understand and agree mostly. But, the whole "let new players have unrealistic advantages" comment bothers me. First, because DayZ is supposed to be ruthlessly difficult to learn, let alone master. And second, if you give new players that crutch, they'll never learn to walk on their own. Going by the server populations 99% of the dayz community doesn't want a challenge or thinks they need unrealistic advantages. I think something needs to be done. It's almost like Rocket was being nice and giving people options, but then we all took advantage of his kindness and milked those options for every advantage possible. Edit: "People play on servers with XXXXX enabled because it makes dayz easier" why is that something we as a community are so accepting of? -

Next you'll be telling us how using scripts to protect yourself from other script kiddies is a valid tactic. -

bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nope. I would make an emotional post about it here on the forums and then go play some more. See, my issue here isn't first vs third person views.(despite my many opinions on the subject) My issue is that we have all these settings that can be changed by server admins. Why are we letting the server admins dictate the difficulty of DayZ? I believe for the good of DayZ, Rocket needs to hammer out some specific settings, and enforce them. Otherwise it's like battlefield or call of duty, depending on the game settings, the experience is massively different. To be honest, I'd rather have the recruit settings standardized across all the servers than to have them all over the place. Those settings might not be what I would like, but server consistency matters more in my opinion. -

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm actually amazed at how few people said they would stop playing. @Dreygar, I'm not looking to get into the whole first versus third person debate, I've stated my opinion, you understood it. I just wanted to mention that you can change your field of view in first person view. If you double tap the - (minus symbol) on the number pad it'll zoom out and give you a wider field of view. Also, mZLY posted this tutorial about changing your default FOV setting, http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/31609-ultimate-fov-field-of-view-guide-for-arma-2-and-dayz-from-dayzpvpcom/ I also just wanted to add that I have this opinion about third person view, but I don't ever participate in PVP. I'm a devoted hero who almost never fires a weapon at the uninfected. So, please don't dismiss my opinion as "PVP focused". I understand that tasks are more fun/comfortable/etc in third person view, that doesn't mean third person should stay. But, again, that's just my opinion on the subject. -

Unauthentic behaviors that are caused by the third person view. Yes, that's my only argument. -

I know what he's saying. But, does it actually happen? If I posted a picture of a hackers nameplate with a box spawned in front of him, would they be able to do anything without evidence in the logs? (Talking about official hive servers) -

bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
True, neither view is perfect, that's for sure. But, I feel the advantages of first person view in terms of player behavior tip the scales. I'd rather someone see my poorly hidden leg sticking out of a bush than see me over a wall. Or here's a good one, I avoided death twice the other night while playing because people were camping on top of stairs and a ladder, I saw them before they could see me, because of third person view. That's not right, I should have been killed. -

My point exactly. It's just like when somebody claimed the kill messages help combat combat loggers. Like putting up cardboard cutouts of cops on every street corner will help fight crime. -

bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You could just hold alt and look down at your bodyparts. The only thing you can't see in first person is your head. So the only advantage I see in that argument would be knowing if you've become a bandit. In my opinion, to protect the integrity of the game. I believe DayZ should standardize the servers. If you join one, you should be on the same playing field as everyone else.(not literally of course, but settings wise) At the very least, there should be multiple hives based on difficulty settings. But that's been proven to not work since most people will jump on the easy servers and the rest of us follow the population, because dayz is boring with 5 people in a server. It's a bit of a vicious circle going on here. -

I would obviously love if expert settings were standard. Originally I played only on first person servers, but due to lack of a population I've now switched to 3rd person servers and I'll admit I use 3rd person about 90% of the time. I use 3rd person view because it's better, but I feel the game itself would improve without it. To me, it's similar to auto-aim in console games, if it's there, you HAVE to use it because everyone else does. -

bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes. As long as it follows Rockets vision for DayZ. I don't think popular opinion should play any part in the development of DayZ. In my opinion, DayZ has gotten this popular because it didn't conform to popular opinion. Going back on that philosophy now would really just screw things up. If people can't accept the game DayZ was always going to be, they shouldn't have gotten on board in Alpha. I see a lot of people pushing hard to make this game more easy. Not just with server settings, but now private hive mods are further making it easier and easier. It's clear that if you give people the ability to dumb down the DayZ experience, they will run with it and push it as far as it'll go. The thing is tho, this game is evolving and those people are going to be left behind if Rocket locks things down in the future. I guess I'm just asking these questions to see what those people think, are they going to stick with their private 'easy mode' hive if the official servers were forced to run expert settings. Also, if the standalone does it, will they simply stick with the mod? -

Well, I'm not pushing him to make them all expert settings for my sake. I'm just saying if he does it like that, it would be the same as what I would have done. I want Rocket to make the game he wants. I don't want to get into the pro & cons of first person, there are lots of threads for that discussion. I was just using it as an example of how people want to keep these settings that make the game easier, or as rocket would say... more accessible. I'm curious if those options were taken from their game, how would people react. -

Did you turn off post processing, headbob and have your 3d resolution at 100%? Also you could try double tapping the - to get a wider FOV. -
When they start running after a human, they should startle the other zombies they're running past, get them to look in that direction, maybe even follow the running zombie like they do with thrown whiskey bottles or smoke grenades. One aggro'd zombie wouldn't aggro the whole town, but the whole town would be noticing the aggro'd zombie and coming to investigate.

Good point with the versions TheBaby, make sure you have the latest version of DayZ and the Arma2 beta patch. And then only join servers with the same, I used to get reset to the coast whenever I joined an earlier version a while back.
