They'll both hit the ground in the same way when you die, it doesn't really matter. -
Question about non Chernarus maps
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to pbrunk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
DayZcommander is great for checking out the popularity of a map before downloading it. When you open up the mod/map download part it shows how many servers there are for each different map/mod. Sadly a lot of the maps hardly have any active server. -
So a while back I spotted a post by a spam bot and clicked the report button. A while later I tried to log into the forums and found my account was banned for spam. I instantly knew what had happened, a moderator had mistakenly banned me instead of the spambot. That's fine, we're all human, I contacted him and Matt Lightfoot and got my account back working again. But, in being banned my private messages mailbox got removed. I've sent Matt Lightfoot a couple emails over the last few months with no response, I know he's a busy guy so I'm not too upset, but I know there has been a couple times where I've wanted to send someone an IM but wasn't able to. So, I'm here asking for help from the forum team to get my inbox working again, or if it's not possible, let me know and I'll create a new account.

Why DayZ will fail as a standalone game
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I love how people talk about Rocket going to Everest like he's just started work on a game and up and leaves for two months. He's been working hard on DayZ since... this time last year? Give the guy a break, it can only be good for DayZ if Dean Hall gets some r&r. Unless of course, you're the type who can't wait 2 minutes for a map to load, or a few months for an alpha to go public. -
What's the current state of hacking?
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to Luke42_02's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Public/private means nothing anymore, it's all about finding a server with good admins. Just today on a public hive server, I was teleported and instantly teleported back, then someone got banned for hacking. You don't need to go to a private hive or whitelisted server for good protection. It might take you some time to find a good server, but they're out there. -
We're addicted to populated servers. People paying for servers are addicted to filling their servers. If I have a choice of playing pretty much by myself in a server without side chat, I'll go to the one with 50 people and put up with the annoyance of side chat. It's the same with added vehicles and other crap. This drains the populations of vanilla servers and sends the wrong message to the people running servers. In my opinion allowing the servers to customize their settings along with a surge in DayZs popularity started this trend. People who just wanted to check out this new viral mod for a game they've never heard of all started to poor in. They opted for easier servers, admins saw the trend and responded, now I'm betting most of the casual gamers have left and a lot of the people still playing the dumbed down server are just doing it out of habit or laziness. They've looted a pistol a hundred times, why cant they just spawn with one? I think the best bet for DayZ mods' hardcore fans is to get the community behind the idea of a pure dayz experience, maybe even get a tag going in server names([Vanilla] or something) so people can filter for them. Get a few servers that are always filled and other server admins and most importantly, people will follow.

Where are the servers for original DayZ????

US3533 isn't too bad, no sidechat or anything. -
New patch coming soon to dayz
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to leviski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Melee weapons have no range though. You can't be talking to someone 10ft away and have them chop you in two instantly, they have to come at you and by then it's obvious and easily avoidable. When someone is sitting there talking to you with a Makarov in their hands, you can die in the blink of an eye, and you can't even lower a pistol in Arma2. Also, the crow bar is pretty weak, I'm sure a stick could be added with even less power. -

The changes suggested don't set a story. He suggested them based on his version of the DayZ story, but we can still have those changes without a story. -
New patch coming soon to dayz
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to leviski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What? That was hard to understand. If you're saying that's a suggestion for standalone, why not apply it to the mod also? It would really change the gameplay and increase difficulty. -
Great idea. It should be applied to the MOD, not just standalone. It would be great fun as a hero to patrol the shores with lots of supplies helping sick players get on their feet.

New patch coming soon to dayz
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to leviski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I just don't think the night time problem is because of the moonlight or lack of. I think the biggest problems are the gamma being exploitable and the fear of NVG wearing bandits. The only time it becomes difficult to see with cranked up gamma is when there is little to no moonlight, so with this change it makes exploiting easier in my eyes, maybe that will increase the people playing at night. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I believe that people complained about the zeds being too hard after death because there were some bugs in terms of them aggro'ing through buildings and behind cover. I've certainly never felt that the zombies are too difficult to go navigate weaponless, in any of the patches, bugs and all. It just takes skill and intelligence. -
New patch coming soon to dayz
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to leviski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If that's the reason behind it, add the crow bar. Or a stick, melee flashlight like WarZ, or unarmed melee/block ability. The pistol is going to encourage people to try and score headshots on people with better weapons. There's no denying that. -

I'm gonna comment on the stuff I like and dislike in the changelog, I know this stuff isn't 100% yet, which I why I chose to comment, hopefully my feedback can help. Stuff I like... Awesome! For those that don't understand what this means, it's that option you get anytime you look at a tent or medical box that says "re-arm at medical box". I believe it tries to pull out ammo for your main weapon, pretty much useless in DayZ. My new favorite weapon! Thank you a million times over! OMFG YES! I suggested sleep and defended the idea to the death, so anything done in this area makes me smile. I love it, this should hopefully bring sneaking back to a couple versions ago where it was fun and random, while still being difficult. It was always so stupid to have zombies spawn behind you after you cleared an area. Stuff I don't like... WHY? Not more shit on my screen! Dean developed DayZ with a goal of no-HUD, this is going backwards. Not to mention the streamers will hate it for giving away the server they're on. WTF? Why? Isn't it enough that nobody plays night servers? Isn't it enough that the server base is saturated with 24/7 daylight? Isn't it enough that people have the option to crank up their gamma and negate night all together? Honestly, when I go out of my way to find a server with people playing in the dark, I don't want it to ALWAYS be a full moon. I play in the dark, to play in the dark. This translates to me as "* [FIXED] - Cranking up gamma will always work now because the moon will always be full." What's next? Daylight turned to optional? BOO! As much as I like the idea, just remove the whole zombie aggro from direct chat. It's counter productive. You want to encourage people to use the in-game chat, not punish them for doing it. Teamspeak and other 3rd party voice software already taint the dayz community, this type of feature only further divides us. FUCK NO! Does it really matter to the guy with the AK if a Makarov will kill him or just make him bleed? No, he's still going to view the makarov as a threat and kill the person holding it. To me, the whole idea of spawning without a weapon was to ingrain into the minds of the players that 'YOU CAN SURVIVE JUST FINE WITHOUT A WEAPON!' which is the truth. It was like a tutorial mode every time you died. You get to play around with the zombies and see how far you can push them before your in trouble. I don't care how much harder the zombies hit, they're still going to be avoidable. I'm not buying this whole "Zombies are harder, you need pistol" attitude from the posters above. Unless the zombies can chase you down on the beach, knock you down and eat your brains, I don't want to start with a weapon. "Oh but the backpack and flashlight are gone!" big fucking deal. Flashlight was useless unless you were part of the 0.5% play at night. And the backpack was pretty much useless unless you're a pack rat and have to pick up EVERYTHING you see. Fact is the bigger backpacks are so easy to find most people don't even put items in their patrol pack before it gets swapped. So yeah, can't really compare those two starting items with a pistol and magazines. ----- No offense was meant in any of my criticisms, I respect the hard work the dev team is doing for this mod. Keep up the good work guys! I love that I always have new stuff to criticize. -
I'm guessing it would be impossible to actually store pictures on the object for others to look at, that would require uploading and storage space on the server. I think just having a basic object that can flash a light and zoom would be enough.

Hitmarkers, yay or nay?
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to killzone_kid's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How many times have you been shot in real life? What if the bullet passes clean through, is it easy to tell which direction those holes were made from? Also, the shock and trauma of actually being shot would probably add to the confusion. Add on to that the injury to a part of your body. I'm not saying there's no way someone is going to know which direction they're being shot from, BUT I don't think it should be as easy as observing a little red indicator on your screen. That little indicator can't asses the situation and determine if it's realistic, so it's inevitably going to be reporting positions in unrealistic situations. So no, indicators have no place in DayZ or any half way realistic game or simulator. There is already enough information to determine where you're being shot from without the game telling you. -
Hitmarkers, yay or nay?

I don't even like kill messages..... nay. -
Imagine someone navigating the dark using only the flash on their camera, and then the person finding it on their mangled corpse in the morning, scrolling through the pictures reveals the story of their demise.

Remove Starter Flashlight; Bring Back Flares
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to Powell (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The first time I shined my flashlight at a zombie and he didn't react, I cried a little inside. I like using the flashlight, but mostly I use it to attract the attention of other survivors. Chemlights are the best way to navigate the night, along with flares to light up areas. The only problem I see with removing the starter flashlight is it gives even more reason for people to avoid playing at night. But, with all the options for 24/7 daylight and NVGs on spawn, I don't think it's much of a problem. I say remove it, along with all the other items. ---- About the lack of bandage meaning you bleed to death from a scratch.... have you tried bleeding to death in DayZ lately? You stop bleeding after a while.
