Living off the land challenge
bad_mojo (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I've killed and eaten a couple, but I will admit I located them by sound while hunting for bigger game. I'm not sure I'm going to include the rabbit only rule in my challenge, I'm going to try the other parts of it first and if I master that I'll do rabbits only. -

In this video game natural water is only attainable from ponds or catching it in a canteen. I can't setup a system of leaves to gather water, I can't squeeze moss for water, I can't dig in wet ground, I can't collect from puddles, I can't find plants that contain water, I can't destill my urine to make water, I can't collect rain water from buckets and other places you would find it puddling in an urban environment. Also, like I said in an earlier post, the north part of the map that is being worked on has no ponds added yet, so either I stick to the boring south that I have spent hundreds of hours roaming, or I can include wells and explore some new areas where I can potentially get lost. The idea is to challenge yourself, if you feel like the wells shouldn't be included, feel free to exclude them. -

Today at work I thought up a few more ways to challenge ourselves in this manner. -Can only hunt rabbits. -Can't hunt until hungry. -All food must be consumed immediately. -Can't look for water until thirsty. -Water must be boiled(simulated by boiling a cooking pot) or purified with tablets(have to keep track of how many you use, then drop them when out.) -Can't hunt or drink in the same place back to back. -

Using a knife, the challenge is to only use an axe as a weapon, you can have other tools. Knife & matches are pretty much a requirement for this challenge. I still search houses & other buildings while doing this, I just don't pick up the food items anymore. -

I found that adding 8 stones to my fire increased my cooking times drastically. It used to take me at least 5 minutes to cook a piece of meat and now it only takes 1 or 2. Also, the temperature of the day and placement of your fire seems to have some effect, when it's cold and you see your breath it takes longer, or if you build your fire on the top of a hill where your matches keep going out. I'm pretty sure cloth or paper doesn't make a difference, they both create the same firepit object. I don't even bother building a fire every time anymore, I just cook my food, pull the wood off the fire and store the whole pit in my pack, its actually smaller to carry the whole fire pit than to carry 1 rock(which I use to sharpen my blades), and surprisingly it's not considered hot like when you put a hot cookpot in your pack. I'm sure it will change in the future, and I'll have to dump a canteen on it or something. -

The reason I included wells was because a lot of the water in the northern parts of the map are unfinished. You'll come upon lakes and streams roughed in, but no actual water yet. Alpha and all. -

To be honest hunting a deer with an axe really isn't much harder than with a rifle. I missed him on the first run, and all he did was run about 100m away and stop again. I really wish they would ramp up the difficulty of the animals, if a zombie can see me across the field and come running, I want the animals to be able to see us across the field and run away, far away. -

It's fun so far... Zombie smelled the deer steaks cooking and came running. -

A stone or pickaxe to get a stone is a good thing to carry also, you can sharpen a 'badly damaged' axe/knife back to 'damaged' state. -
axe, knife, matches throw in a rock and you can run into the forest and live for weeks.

What exactly determines if they have it coming? Their mere existence is enough?

The trick is to not let it bother you when you get killed on sight like that, just shake it off and respawn. The person who's role you are playing wouldn't even have time to care, so why should you? I usually have way more fun in the first few hours of survival than after I've gotten all geared up anyway, after a while I am half hoping for someone to kill me so I can go back to being in that vulnerable state. When 90% of player interactions are kill on sight, it makes those last 10% that much better. Don't give up hope, good things come to those who wait.

Played some dayz tonight, loving the new changes, but the server restarts are still killing the player interactions far too often. Two of the three people I spoke to tonight were taken away by the red letters.

Mistakes you see people do all the time in DayZ

People acting like the world is at war and they're being hunted at all times. You and your can of beans aren't that special. React to stuff when it happens, not before. It's way more fun to live on the edge than to cower in the bushes. After all, it's just a game, you can respawn. -
2-3 months creating one unique building -SenChi

I would assume he's talking about going from concept to in-game, it takes 2-3 months for their team to pump one out. I don't think he means 1 person makes it their 8hr a day job for 3 months, to finish 1 building. -
You're seriously trying to say the Arma2 DayZ mod is/was a finished product? Did you even play the DayZ mod? I'm not talking about Epoc or some other DayZ spin off that has had lots of further development & fixes. I'm talking about the vanilla mod that Rocket built and abandoned to work on standalone, that mod is by no means a finished product. But, the thing is, back when I played lots of the mod, some servers would run for over a week without a restart, that kind of up time is unheard of in the standalone. Technologically speaking, there is no reason why we have to have such frequent restarts in this game, it all boils down to it not being a priority yet. I'm here making this thread to say it is a huge priority for me as a player, and the lack of up time ruins my enjoyment of this game, on a regular basis. Edit: I've brought this topic up in the past, I saw this coming 9 months ago, I hoped it wouldn't, and pleaded for change, but alas, nothing changed. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/158528-please-eliminate-server-restarts/

I hadn't played my HC(first person) character for a long time, when I logged in tonight I was shot dead before I could even load in. No big deal there, just crazy odds that I would be spawning into a place where someone was ready to kill me. It looked like I was in an apartment building, but the building didn't load in time for me to tell. Seemed a little fishy, especially when the server had messages about doing 'testing'. I could hear footsteps and I could hear them take a few more shots to confirm the kill. Anyway, I disconnected and reconnected to the same server, waited the 59 second spawn time and played for a while. A bit later the server went down for restart, when I reconnected I again got the 59second spawn timer. Okay, whatever, I get to see more of the changes to the map. But, the server never repopulated so about 20mins later I decided to switch to one with players, I found a good safe place and logged. I connected to another first person server and instantly got the spawn timer. I bit the bullet and figured that first server was messed up or something. But, after some more testing, most of the time I disconnect and join another server, I have to respawn. Once I did successfully bring my character from one server to another, but then when I tried to go back, I got the timer. Am I missing something? Does the hive need time to catch up? What's the deal?

No, just no.

Of course I don't want those things. But, to me it seems like DayZ standalone developers are ignoring those problems and just sweeping them under the rug by forcing these frequent restarts on us. If they continue to rely on frequent restarts, the problem is only going to get worse. It's like a heroin addict trying to quit doing heroin, the longer they wait, the more they rely on restarts, the harder it's going to be to ever wean themselves off them. Is their end goal to have such frequent restarts? I doubt it.

Why shouldn't the game be setup for strong user experiences right now? That's kind of the whole point behind DayZ. Or it was, back when I purchased Arma2 years ago. So, you're okay with a broken game that drives itself into the ground so quickly that it has to be restarted hourly? That's nice and all, but a lot of us have waited a long time for this game already, and we don't mind waiting a bit longer. The DayZ Mod has better up time than the standalone, that's just not right.

The problem I was having seems to have fixed itself. I think that first server was having some issues with its connection to the hive.

Isn't firing wooden arrows from a compound crossbow something that isn't advised by archery experts? From what I've learned, they are too flexible and will possibly break under the increased forces of a compound bow or crossbow. Perhaps they could add a chance to break and injure the person firing? It just seems wrong that you can fire wooden arrows with absolutely no risk, when that isn't the way it is in real life.
-
Quote from somebody who knows more about this than I do... From a discussion about wooden arrows from compound bows on an archery forum... http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1250591 Most of the people there say it's possible, but dangerous to fire wooden arrows from a compound bow.
-
I don't think that's true. When you release a compound bow, it accelerates the arrow in a sudden jolt rather than the consistent pull you get with a conventional bow. I'm just saying in a survival situation you don't want to take risks. If firing wooden arrows is a bigger risk than it should be reflected in the game. I know you can use wooden arrows in a compound bow, but video games aren't like real life, they're consistent unless programmed otherwise. If we have wooden arrows that work 100% of the time, that's unauthentic.

I took a few months off from playing DayZ, and I'm disappointed to come back and see that nothing has been done to improve the loot distribution. It's horrible for re-playability when I know exactly what buildings will have what loot. I know what corners to look in and where to ignore. If I'm looking for something specific in residential areas, I know which houses will never spawn that item, and which will. Honestly, the loot was distributed best on release day, it's done nothing but get worse and worse ever since.
