The most common 'cheat' used in DayZ...

They might have suspected something was wrong, but without radio contact, the guy being held up wouldn't have been able to direct them to his exact location and inform them of how many enemy there were, and knowing the exact time they were leaving the building. I'll admit that teamspeak can be used in good ways. But, always having that temptation to cheat is sometimes too much for people. Especially in a game about survival. It would be like running game hacks to see player names above your squads head. How many people do you think wouldn't click those other options in a pinch.

Can't be bothered reading past this ignorance.

This video is a good example of how talking on teamspeak can drastically change the game. The guy who was being held up circumvented the games voice systems and used teamspeak to call his friends for help.

The most common 'cheat' used in DayZ...

Repeatedly telling me to "stop calling it cheating" comes across as people telling me not to share my opinion. Obviously nobody here has the power to actually censor me(except the mods of course), but it's still annoying to constantly have to defend my opinion like that. People want me to use a neutral term "metagaming" while I want to bring attention to the negatives, so obviously the term I choose will be negative.

The good old "you have no friends" dismissal. Tell me how you're just playing for fun, and it can't be blocked. To completely round out the avoidance of the actual subject.(In case you haven't been reading, it's about the circumvention of game mechanics being considered cheating.)

I know it's crazy, some people embrace a difference of opinion, but still feel strongly about something. When people say "stop calling it cheating" that to me, is trying to censor my opinion that it is indeed cheating. Disagree all you want, but don't tell me to stop calling it cheating, when I clearly believe it is. I fail to see how this game doesn't provide you the tools needed to communicate. Direct chat is available to everyone, walkie talkies are available to those who look for them. The game doesn't issue you a map on spawn either, that doesn't mean they expect you to go online and use that map. The devs aren't going to call loot maps or 3rd party voice software cheating because what's the point? They build this world for us to inhabit and we as a community have to decide what is cheating and what isn't. People have decided server hopping and combat logging is cheating, I'm just voicing my opinion on 3rd party voice software, if it changes even one persons views on the subject, it was worth the effort. I'm sorry my opinion is insulting to you. I can't help but feel this way.

Why do you guys want everyone to just accept your "meta-gaming" because it's not(or can't be) actively stopped? We can't stop people from excessively speeding, that doesn't mean it's good and should be encouraged and justified. Am I not free to discourage the practice, the same way you guys are free to encourage it? Stop taking offense to us calling you cheaters. If you really thought your actions were valid, I doubt you'd be getting so defensive about it. I do think it's funny how i mention a part of a fictional show to give context to my point, and promptly get a lecture about realizm in dayz. No shane didn't respawn, and no rick didn't sprint from city to city. Because... like dayz, the walking dead is fictional. It's entertainment. It's not life and death. You don't have to be so paranoid about putting your virtual life at risk. You can be vulnerable in the hopes of being entertained. At least that's how I feel about dayz.

I've had mine on the last couple days while playing, my battery hasn't died yet. I think they either last a really long time or they don't consume any power yet.

Nobody is here trying to take your freedoms away. Just because we think you're cheating, doesn't mean we're actively trying to stop you from doing so. That's the whole point of this thread. To express how some of us think that it's cheating. We think it's bad for the game, and you guys shouldn't do it. You can call it meta-gaming instead, but it doesn't change the fact that we don't like it and think you should stop. I don't accept this idea that dayz should be accessible to groups of friends. There is a valid way to find someone, you look for them. Think, Rick in the first season of the walking dead. He didn't jump on teamspeak and ask his wife and son where they were. You're free to cheat all you want. I just don't think it's justified in this games atmosphere. When you don't have your friends to lean on constantly & consistently, the game is a different beast, loneliness comes into play. After not seeing anyone for a long time you crave human contact, you set out on a journey to find another player to converse with. Except if you pull up teamspeak or steam chat, you never let yourself feel any of that.

Let me say that I don't use steam chat to communicate with others in the game. But, it was just a suggestion on how to eliminate teamspeak, and only use steam to basically meet up or share the radio frequency. If you're trying to play with another person you already know, you're already "cheating" in some respects. So, you're going to have to "cheat" a little to meet up, at which point you can go legit and talk over direct and radio. My point is, the excuse that teamspeak is a placeholder for radios isn't valid now that they're in-game. Yes radios seem to work, I haven't tested them out, but I have one and it's always on waiting to pick up some chatter. I did meet one guy since having it, but he didn't have one so we couldn't test them. I've read on another thread that they actually work. After you put a battery in you right click and get options. Once it's powered up you can switch to the channel using , & . keys and then talk with caps lock. Obviously it's going to be broadcasting your voice in direct chat also, so people are still going to cheat and use teamspeak.

I didn't mean that steam text chat would replace teamspeak. I mean you agree on a location to meet, and a channel to talk on. Yeah, I know, heaven forbid you have to find an item in the game before you get to talk over distance. You might have it taken away when you die. I can see how you would want to avoid that. But, it's exactly those reasons that I embrace it.

Where is all the friggin water at ?

Stand next to water or pump, look down, you should get the option to 'drink water'. If you don't get that option, change into first person view and try again. Drink until it says you're full.
  13. bad_mojo (DayZ)

The most common 'cheat' used in DayZ...

Why couldn't you use steam text messaging to meet up somewhere and then talk over direct and use the in-game radios when you're apart? There's multiple frequencies on the radio, so it's not like you're talking over global where everyone can easily hear you.

OP clearly states there's no winning this battle, but people still feel the need to say that if something can't be stopped, we should welcome it with open arms. I disagree. Just because we can lie cheat and steal, doesn't mean those things are good and should be defended. Some people need to step back and think about why they get so defensive whenever third party voice software is even brought up. Even the slightest mention of it being negative sets people off on 'just a game' or 'can't be stopped' rants. We can't stop scammers in Africa from taking advantage of naive people, does that mean we should all move to Africa and scam people? Radios are in-game, what is your excuse now player?

    Is less zombies actually more?

I really like how sneaky the zombies are compared to the mod. Sure, most of them scream when they start running, but I've had some just sprint at me silently, it really makes my heart skip a beat when I see a figure rushing at me close range. The variety in zombies also makes it difficult to tell a sprinting player from a zombie at first glance. But, no, there needs to be about 10x the amount.

Meta-gaming is so immersion breaking. Trying to work teamspeak and loot maps into my role playing is difficult to say the least. I rarely use either, but everyone I meet does.

    Protective cases?

Where'd they go? I can't find any since the latest patch, and I've checked everywhere they used to spawn, multiple times. I'm sad, that was my favorite item to find.
  18. bad_mojo (DayZ)

    Protective cases?

I really like the fact that I pour countless hours into searching for these items and I still can't find them with any consistency. I'm sure I could server hop the fire station and find one in a matter of minutes, but while doing it legit and having visited at least 10 fire stations and countless red brick cafe/bar buildings, I still haven't come across one. Still, my beans, they need protection.

Why is the game messing with me!?

Found a shotgun, turned to leave the barn, fall about a foot off the upper stairs, proceeded to slide a few feet and fell off the 10ft platform... You are dead.
  20. Why is it either farmville or call of duty deathmatch to you? Why do people have to devote themselves to killing other players? Can't they just decide on the fly how they want to play at that given moment according the situation? For the most part I am the most friendly player who wouldn't hurt a soul. Until it comes time to throw down, at which time bandits hit the floor faster than my spent shells. To me, that's the beauty of DayZ, the ability to go from one extreme to another, like real life.
  21. I was responding to Grimey, I'm not going to respond to your critiques of my gameplay. I have fun, that's all that matters, he asked, so I answered. I will say that while I might call someone a douchebag for killing on sight, I don't think they're actually wrong, I just think they're playing another game than me. I think they're looking to get a reaction out of people, so in my opinion they're a douchebag. I'd rather be tormented and tortured than have the "You are dead" screen pop up instantly. I don't understand how that's confusing to you. It's like a hollywood movie, they always draw out the deaths of main characters, they never just put a bullet in his head at the first opportunity. While it might be realistic to kill people on sight, this isn't real life, and people respawn, so it's more fun for me to have drawn out deaths.
  22. A personal insult would be if someone said you're lacking intelligence so therefore you kill on sight. When people say KOS'ers are douchebags, that's a response to in-game actions, not you personally. You're on a game forum, we don't give a shit about YOU personally. Lighten the fuck up. All the stuff you listed isn't going to give purpose to the game. There's no planned features for "missions" or "objectives". If you're currently struggling to find anything to do besides pvp, I don't see this game delivering anything long term that will alleviate that. The game is going to improve, but it's not going to change drastically.
  23. I act like killing people means something. I act like it's not just a video game to be played. What I do on a regular basis is just survive, walk around the map, find the best loot, talk to people, help others survive, run from bandits, get shot in the head. For me, pvp is always just an option. It's always there if I need to use it. It's never the focus on my game. It's similar to how people carry guns in the USA, they're not out to kill everyone they don't like or feel threatened by, it's only a last resort. I'm not really saying your pvp focused gaming is wrong. You're free to play however you want, but I feel like people who share you opinion that there's "nothing else to do but pvp" are playing the wrong game. I feel like you're wasting your time and pissing off people like me who care about killing and dying. Why not challenge yourself? Rob people or find some new spawn and force him to rob people. Corner people and force them to play a 'game' where wrong answers get you a bullet to the leg. I mean, there's so many other interesting things to do in a sandbox environment besides putting bullets in each others heads.

    Protective cases?

Okay, good. I was starting to think they were removed.
  25. Reality is there will never be anything to do besides pvp, if you lack imagination. If you can't find anything to do besides pvp now, how are more clothing options, deadly diseases, & stamina system going to satisfy your need for direction? There's nothing wrong with being a bandit and killing people for good reason. But, when you say there's nothing to do besides pvp, you've already missed the whole point of dayz.
