It's been proven that loud noises like gunshots are very detrimental to your hearing (regardless if outside, at the range, in the army or in a war) whether you perceive it as painful or not. Rifles in .22LR are generally percieved as relatively quiet with subsonic ammunition, while a pistol with that same cartridge often is percieved as painfully loud. It all has to do with gas pressure dropping to a lower level in a longer barrel, before the propellant gases leave barrel. I like the idea of needing some kind of hearing protection. I'd like too see this implemented by making your ears ring a little more from every weak round (a lot more from powerful rounds) fired without hearing protection, with gradually added temporary hearing loss for consecutive shots fired.
