Ammo Calibration : Poll & Discussion
PhillyT replied to stielhandgranate's topic in General Discussion
Exactly. ARMA is based on soldiers. To say the mechanics should be the same implies that players are soldiers, which isn't the games intent. Besides, weapon accuracy issues are the most overstated problem in Dayz. This vocal minority can't honestly be such garbage shots as to complain that the gameis fundamentally broken. Thousands of 100m shot kills begs to differ. Additionally, when shooting there are many concerns that come into accuracy other than sway. Clinch, prediction of recoil, and trigger pull all come into play, making the sight picture you see at pull little more than an estimate when the bullet leaves the barrel. It take years and thousands of rounds to overcome those issues. -
Well I think it is a more common weapon than the ak74u. But I am a proponent of few weapon calibers and magazine types. I get the other side and would generally prefer all calibers and as many guns as make sense except that it makes the game a bit cloudy if you go too far in that direction. Having all AK mags for the AKM work in the AK variants isn't too bad. Similarly, there are dozens of weapons that can use the M4 magazines, including some crazy calibers.

Accuracy is fine. Particularly if you stop and figure that we aren't playing as soldiers. And ammo isn't a big deal. I totally get where people might get that slight annoyance that the numbers are perfectly aligned, but if the damage per gun is a match, who cares what the inventory item says? -
Most likely straight bad luck. My buddy shot at a zombie in Berezino with the .22 pistol, missed, and accidentally hit me in the head. Knocked me out flat. But really, .22 to the body is pretty much an extremely slow way to kill someone in real life. People survive multiple 9mm rounds to the body, so what do you want from a .22?

They could add it in, but if I recall, you can't use ak mags in it. Probably easier to just put the aku in.

If looking at DayZ as a game in development makes me a fool, then so be it. I think rampant nerd rage is silly and somewhat pathetic, but highly entertaining. SO the forum continues to be a source of enjoyment for me. -

What gimmick system? And you have absolutely no right to claim that we were promised anything. As much as people love to ignore the alpha status or the warnings that were given before purchase, the game is not promised to be anything and can be altered at will and for whatever reason the developers deem best. Your idea of what the game "should be" isn't the same as mine. We both paid the same amount. It is whatever it will be. -

Guys, come on, think of all the money the free mod brought in! Guys like Gibonez are not only ballistic experts, they are business geniuses who understand the complicated dance that is game development in a niche category. -
The mosin doesn't lack fire power. It fires a .308 round.

Again, there is no real difference other than the rim and a tiny bit of length. I own an SKS and a R25 in .308 (well I have the upper, it was a .243 when I bought it). Ballistically they are effectively identical. They could add .03 to the mosin rounds and make folks happy I guess. -

I don't know Dale. I doubt that will work as an effective method of increasing friendliness on its own. Most likely, people will just beat each other to death like they do now. -
Makes sense. I think we will see the mosin become the Lee Enfiled. Starter gun with no options. As it should be. It was a place holder for all single shot gun variants anyway.

Ammo spawns at specific locations. They randomize the ammo types for those locations. They differentiate the ammo quite a lot. IS there a real difference between 7.62x51 and 54? Nope. -
Did they remove the bipod in experimental The End?

I think the greater issue is you are simply increasing the number of required ammo spawns, as opposed to randomizing ammo type per spawn point. In the long run, it is meaningless. Most games get away with "rifle ammo" and that is it. -
So that means what, the AKM and maybe the M4 are a bit more common. Doesn't help any of the pistols I mentioned. And that also runs counter to the other great complaint, made by you on more than one occasion, that military loot shouldn't be on the coast.

This is a good point. There are two styles of play here. I like the flexibility of 3PP, but I love playing Hardcore because the players are so much easier to kill. I can blissfully move into a town and know nobody is watching from a position I can't see. When I see someone, 90% of the time, they are clueless that I am even there, since they can see roughly 40 degrees at any time. I can track along for several minutes and deal with them. 3PP does allow you more room to be friendly, since you can make contact from behind a wall. Hardcore does have weaker players, which helps with that.

Exactly. The nature of any game requires varying amount of suspension of disbelief. I would love for flawless realism, but if it means the game is unusable and only the most ridiculous wanks want to play it, the game dies and nobody gets to have fun. Dean wants it "based" on realism. It is naturally unreal at its core, so any steps towards mimicking reality are just that, steps towards mimicking. -
You want a realistic survival game? Then remove almost all the long guns (since most wouldn't be in Chernarus), all of the current pistols (not a single one would be in Chernarus), zombies (not real), and restrict it to like three total rifles (mosin, some sort of .22, and a shotgun). Oh, and bullets are useless unless found indoors. Weee, bet that would be a blast!

What crusade? We are taking about a non-AAA PC game made by a small niche publisher using a low quality engine. -

Other potential issues are that finding ammo for many guns would be impossible or very difficult, meaning we would see those guns left unused. But really, the fact that several guns are even present in the game (B95, magnum, 1911 engraved, M4) stretches believability. Add the fact that ammo is just laying around and unaffected by the elements and you have lots of oddities. -

I think it is fine. Limiting the number of calibers while still giving people a little bit of variety in fire arms is fine. The game can't be realistic anyway. 7.62x51 is essentially the same as a 7.62x54 and a .308. 5.45 is a fair bit different than the 5.56, but in terms of effectiveness in reality and game, it is a wash. -
You think BI is unaware of the vocal group complaining about the M4 dispersion? Gibonez alone has probably hit 1000 posts just on the topic. If they don't know there is a vocal minority complaining about the current values, they don't read anything on this forum. All of the numbers are open to interpretation. The manner in which they adjust and implement weapon effects has multiple methods to achieve a "realistic" behavior. The AKM is marginally less accurate than the M4 in real life. The fact that it was added with excellent accuracy out of the box (with the secondary stock) is a good indicator that they are playing with numbers. More likely, they just haven't bothered to mess with the M4 since introduction because it remains the best gun in the game. And anyone saying it needs MAGPUL parts to be useful is pretty crap at this game.

M24 is just a barely modified 700. That would be a good addition
-
Because the akm doesn't have that issue? If you think the values aren't temporary, stop playing because you aren't part of the solution. Or cry.
