Runescape (not that popular anymore but it was awhile back), World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (and other games in the Elder scrolls Franchise), Guild Wars Franchise, edi I will add more by editing them in as I think of ones that haven't been mentioned edit: I haven't played them but i think that the Arma Series was open-world. The Day Z Mod was open world

For all of these really weak close-range weapons people are suggesting what is the benefit of using one of them, over a 1-2 shot kill fire axe?
-
This is one area of the world, chances are that most people who had military weapons took their weapons with them and didn't leave them behind. To my knowledge the ones that we are finding are the weapons that were left behind. Secondly, there is more than enough ammo for these guns laying around if they had a bunch of military weapons a lot of people would probably have them but not many people would have the ammo for them. I am surprised that there is as much ammo as there is and it should probably be nerfed (why would people leave all that ammo behind? it isn't hard to carry around)
-
I can usually find enough loot to survive and usaully 1 - 2 guns within an hour of playing on a 15-30 player server.
-
Which is better to use?
-
Changing the difficulty of guns I find greatly decreases not only KoSing but also makes it so that if people want to get into a Firefight than there is a significant risk of death and it prolongs fights other than shooting someone with an M4 from a couple hundred meters prone in tall grass and calling it a day. .357 Magnum - Increase sound generated, decrease Fire Rate, Increase recoil edit: Deleted most of the gun changes due to people disagreeing with them, what do you think of decreasing the magnums rate of fire? I got hit with a Fire Axe yesterday, lived, and emptied 6 rounds into somebody in mabye 2 seconds? Any opinions on these suggestions for gun changes?

Stay away from the shotgun(s), here is why.
Timecharge replied to DayzForumer's topic in General Discussion
yesterday i shot someone with a sawed-off and it took 1 round to kill them, it was in very very close quarters and i am pretty sure it wasn't a head shot -
Nah I just don't think that people on the forums are dicks (a couple are), I can easily name a few people that KoS to different extents (including myself) I will help you outside of the game but once we are in-game if you have something I want, I wish you the best of luck.
-
I am a little reckless but that's just because it takes me an hour or so to get enough gear to kill 3 or 4 other players. I have tried to survive for days and days on end and it isn't that hard it is just incredibly boring, so I prefer running around the coast and PVPing.
-
All I have to do is shoot first and being KoS'd usually isn't a problem.
-
If people KoS they KoS doesn't matter, play the game how you want to play the game. I just feel the game could be a lot more enjoyable if interactions between players went beyond shooting everyone who comes within range of you.
-
I don't care if people KoS, I KoS quite often granted they aren't a Bambi and I expect to be KoS'd just as often.
-
Yeah... I will edit that out lol, I got in close range vs a guy with an m4 and i didnt even get a shot off before i was dead, anyways I don't see any point for there to be a long ranged rifle that holds 5 bullets
-
No problem, http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/forum/127-clan-recruitment/
-
I feel that weapon sounds being as loud as the sawed-off shotgun is a great way to discourage KoS a bit, if you fire off a weapon as loud as the sawed off shotgun you better get out of there fast because everyone is going to hear that. edit: they don't all have to be that loud of course but doing things like decreasing the magnums fire rate and increasing its sound generated, making the mosin a single-shot type gun so it is more used to snipe than it is to clear cities/buildings (as well as making it a bit louder unless with the use of a silencer), mabye decrease the M4s range a bit so people cant just go "haha shot from the other side of Kamyshovo with an m4 and you didn't even see me"
-
I was able to find a group of friends to play with just look on the forums for people and contact over steam friends/skype/teamspeak, don't go try and make friends in-game. see clan recruitment thread. also a lot of people who have good loot also don't server hop, some do but a lot of people will play characters for 2 or 3 days and eventually just get all of that gear, I was able to get a shotgun, military clothing and a mountain backpack within an hour of spawning in Elektro
-
You can go into cities and survive you just need to be experienced within them, that means, keep 360o awareness as often as you can notice that when zombies are chasing something that ISN'T you it is another player don't charge people on the off chance you might win, play it strategically and catch them off guard don't look at any certain pile of loot too long if there is a fully geared body in the middle of the road let it be if you sit down to loot it chances are you are going to get shot stay hidden and wait for opportune moments to attack other players do these things and it will drastically help with your odds of survival in cities (the last 4 or 5 kills i have gotten have been with an axe usually vs people with guns, play it smart and it really isn't that hard) edit: you wanna know why people KOS in big cities? because in big cities it is almost entirely kill or be killed, don't go looking for friends in big cities because chances are you are going to die
-
It seems that every time I get shot its by someone with an M4, the last 4 times I have been killed are by people with M4s, so are there certain places I am not looking? Because in 70 hours of Day Z I have only ever found 2 M4s
-
Problem with wearing a Military Beret and not a Ballistic Helmet is that is exactly how you get shot in the head and die. edit: I think shouting into your mike "FRIENDLY! I'M FRIENDLY" is just as symbolic of you being friendly as wearing a Military Beret (that anyone can wear) and a Press Vest (also anyone can wear), if someone is going to shoot you they are going to shoot you, if you run into someone who obviously has you beat in a head on fight you can put your hands up with F2 and sprint away if they seem to be a bandit.
-
The only time i ever even use the gray dot for shooting is in very very close range where i will most likely hit the person no matter where i am aiming
-
I feel that the gray dot is more so for picking things up etc if you look in proportion to where you gun's barrel is pointed it will always be lower than you dot, just aim for the head of players and chances are you will hit them in the chest.
-
You want to find players that you can trust don't meet them in-game go onto the clan recruitment forums and hop in their TS/Skype if they let you in there i don't see any reason why they would just turn around and shoot you.

zombie behaviour questions from a new player
Timecharge replied to helixA2's topic in New Player Discussion
I don't know about all of your questions because I haven't sat down and tested it yet (i might on my next respawn) although to handle zombies it really isn't that complex. To get rid of zombies you can 1) Sneak up behind them hit them in the head and they will usually fall over giving you enough time to get away, 2) Sprint past them they probably won't catch you unless you stop to check a house or something, 3) Crouch/Go Prone by them, try not to be RIGHT next to them however it varies I have crouched by multiple zombies and not been seen then occasionally they will see me. You can also kite them once you get used to their attack style for looting, most of their attacks are charge-like and they are going to stop for a second and lunge forward at you, if you time it right you can usually just kite them around a table or through a building fairly easily. edit: Oh yeah and if you want a zombie to stop chasing you get out of range or cut around a LOT of corners and eventually they will loose track of you. -
Yeah hands down best way to get rare loot like that is to grab a fire axe or a magnum/shotgun and run up to a fully geared person without their gun out and kill them.

We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.
Timecharge replied to 1S1K-Airborne's topic in General Discussion
Not true, I have noticed a lot less KOSing when you aren't in Elektro, even in Elektro I have ran into 2 or 3 fully geared guys who wanted nothing to do with me and my splitting axe (I killed one of them and one of them even asked if i needed anything that he could give me). Outside of Elektro only about 50% of the people I run into want to kill me. edit: stay away from military bases if you don't want to get KOS'd
