    An Idea to Stop most of the PvP

    I will jump on board by saying i do not want to STOP PvP... but there should be REAL consequences to killing another human during an extinction level event like this. In the real world it would be necessity to band together (how many of the zombie movies are people ALONE?) But I think the guns are well done except that the Lee should pull people from MUCH further (doesnt it use a 30-06 round?). an AR15/M16/M4 is easy to hear out to about 200m or more, and even a suppressed M4 (I own a Gemtech HALO suppressor) is actually audible pretty far (though hard to locate even at 25m) and for those of you who dont go shooting much... subsonic ammunition has a hard time cycling most AR15/M4/M16 style weapons, so you could theoretically make subsonic ammo single shot, and make regular ammo easy to detect. Same with pistols that werent built for subsonic ammo.

    Anyone else using TrackIR?

    I wont play in 3rd person, spoils my immersion, so this has made it epic (and it was essential for DCS:A10) to play sims. Also, i received a message and the user has his messages turned off (silly...) Question: Hey, read your forum post about the Track IR. I actually ordered mine last week, and it just came in the mail today. Was wondering if you could let me know what settings worked best for you, so I'd have a good starting point to tweak from, if that makes sense. ______________________________________ ANSWER ill be totally honest in that I use a barely tweaked version of the default it came with. I decreased some of the rotation speed because i have a triple monitor setup, so i can see behind me while decreasing the amount of head movement i needed. Don't forget to turn it on in the "controllers" section of options. I think for the pause, center, precision i used the PrtScr Pause/Break and num* otherwise, if you want, you can google Arma2 TrackIR and a lot of people have their preferred ones... i did this for DCS:A10 its a great investment and super fun to use

    Master Computer just to use

    Laptops are not ALL garbage, but they are pricey. I spent $4500 on an Origin PC (dont get too excited, I got to write it off on my taxes as a work expense) Laptop (17" model) and it has dual GPU's, intel i7 processor, 32G of RAM, SSD's in RAID 0... and its MORE than enough for running Arma2. I feel bad for the guy who bought the Dell, but maybe you should contact Dell about the possibility of an aftermarket GPU in it. Some can have the chips changed, others can not. $1000 is a decent price for a PC (just the tower really) and you can probably build a decent one for that cost. figure $200 for the mobo, $150 for the RAM, $300 for the GPU, $250 for the chip, $100 for the PSU, and any cheap case will do. Thats $1000. It wont scream, but its a start. You don't need a $7000 watercooled tower with dual GTX690 cards and a premium processor to play this game.. Arma2 is a few years old, so you can get away with cutting some corners. Hell, look on eBay, I sell used computer parts when I upgrade for less than 1/2 of what i paid... y ou can get some GREAT deals if youre careful.

    depends where you live. If this happened in NYC all the guns would be in police stations and that one gun shop in Queens. Very few people own guns. We'd more likely be using hammers, clubs, crowbars, etc. If you live in NH (like I do) ir NV (where I used to live) you could find an arsenal in some homes. My house would be a gold mine if you could figure out how to open the safe... Melee weapons should be HUGELY accessible in this game, guns should stay right where they are. You want a gun, sneak around and kill zeds... but you can survive with your crowbar for a decent amount of time!

    Semi Perma Death.

    I have to admit, this is a decent solution to an existing problem. Even a 2 hour timer would be fine (and maybe despawn the body in 1 hour). Obviously, until the entire server population is STABLE this is a slippery slope, but not a terrible concept at all.

    I'm sure this will be addressed over time. I know that games which are too hard for the new player will drive new players away. But there HAS to be a balance, make it too easy and people play it casually. As an alpha test (most of the time people dont get in till beta, fyi) you have to realize we are lucky to have a stable client. I remember the star wars galaxies alpha test i was part of and it was a MESS. Even in Beta you'd not play more than 15 minutes before a server crash or critical bug. I'm sure over time Rocket and his other coders will make this better. Sure, zombies have some super vision and some super weird behaviour... but for now, keep testing, providing useful feedback, and they will either fix the game or someone will develop another mod that we will bitch about for different reasons :) I do think the zombies have too much sense right now, but if thats the game, thats the game, and we all have to either play it or... play something else
  8. Id be willing to help out scavenging for gear or in small patrols for sure! Ever consider getting a dedicated server for this? I worry a clan of bandits could all log in and keep our survivors from logging in by filling the que. This would make it hard to defend. I'm sure members would be into a password protected server, and you could allow bandits in limited numbers to enjoy the challenge as well... just a thought, throwing it out there, your mileage may vary, etc

    What to do once you have all your stuff

    chopper raid on Cherno would be pretty epic I still think the game needs some victory condition. Finite number of Zeds (which will reset the server) or the complete fixing of a helicopter, vehicle, or maybe just having all the people on the server alive cooperatively for a set time period. I think it would be pretty slick if the Arma2 engine could create "events" such as a military convoy clearing out some cities then moving off the map. Would be fun to watch... but likely not possible on the server

    ^^again, make a 5-10 minute respawn timer, or if they can the "diminishing returns" system for rapid cycling or, make the gear so limited its not worth it Marakov (sp) with 4 mags or M1911 with 2 mags or revolver with 2 speedloaders or shotgun with 8 rounds. Those are fairly comparable, and not necesserially worth reloading, and you could even balance the OTHER items as well (maybe you get a flashlight and some food with the least desirable, and just a can of coke with the shotgun). There are ways to balance it out...

    Well, I think a lot of people will be frustrated with no chance of progress, and will leave. I'm not logging in and am back to Arma2:CO until its more enjoyable. If its never enjoyable, nothing lost, its a free game. But if he wants these servers to remain epic its going to take making the game ACCESSIBLE (not easy) to new players. I think also having goals, penalty for banditry, etc... but those are other issues. Accessibility is what keeps people playing. Arma2 is hard as hell in multiplayer (and SP) but you progress, its enjoyable, and playable. This game in its current state is playable only by those who already have gear and are far into the woods sniping players for their sodas

    That may be more complex than needed. I'm not savvy enough to know how that could be coded, but starting pools of weapons would be reasonable, so its not "every" weapon, but maybe a few small handguns and hunting rifles with VERY finite amounts of ammo (more for the pistols, less for the rifles). If you make respawn a delay you'd avoid people respawning for gear and also make a penalty for death..

    im going to guess the child who called me a wuss is either: someone who hacked the game for their weapons; or someone who has a cache of weapons and gear when the new update came and is acting the bandit and likes unarmed foes. My first week playing before this update were great. I had the Marakov but dared not use it. I snuck around, i horded gear, i even traded with another player (traded him some beans for a map). I was eventually killed by a bandit (its absurd, we should be fighting for survival, but to each their own) and played a few more games. The update came and now I can not get away from spawn areas since zeds come from kilometres away and I can not fight or outrun them. I'd be god with no weapon if the zeds were gimped a bit. Its an alpha build, so i assume change is the norm and as for people calling eachother wusses. Remember that the design of this game is to be hard but playable. Games which are TOO hard often bleed users as much as one that is too easy (the attrition rates of EVE Online and SWTOR respectively), and even hardcore military sims are tough for people... and most of my friends refuse to play Arma2 vanilla due to its learning curve

    Finite zombies

    It would give people a reason to kill Zeds other than convenience. You could make it finite and add additionals if a player dies (he becomes a zed, for all intents). This would also get people to cooperate a bit more while giving them some end goal. Server could reset at the end as a victory condition

    unbalanced is not being able to outrun a zombie. If there is a disease affecting the neurological system it STILL would not make them stronger or faster unless it made them secrete adrenaline/noradrenaline and THAT runs out pretty fast. I think they should be slower, dumber, able to be outrun and easier to sneak by... and then i'd be satisfied with very few weapons Also, making them slower but making MANY more of them would be a better balance I think. THen you can get weapons... but will you have enough ammo?

    If they fix the sneak mechanic it would be more enjoyable. It isnt much of survival when you cant get the initial gear to survive. I'd even be happy if EVERY building didnt have a mandatory spawn around it (roving bands only).

    then make the zombies not come at you from 1k away... right now sneaking past them is not working... but in a game where you can only fight with a ranged weapon, you should at least start with one

  19. OK, as i see it the primary problem we now have is that you start with no weapon. This would be fine EXCEPT that the zeds can see you much better and they RUN. I am not sure if this can be dealt with but i'd rather see slower, dumber, more blind zombies... especially if we want to start people with no weapon. Melee s out of the question because of how its handled, and without that its hard to make a "Real" sim since most people would resort to hatchets, boards, bats... when the ammo runs out. PLus we have less guns spawning. I'm findingnow I spawn in areas that seem safe and out of nowhere zeds swarm me. Its very difficult on the new player. Another proposition would be to have different server setups, some which allow start weapons, some which are more hardcore. But I want to be able to at least play more than 5 minutes at a time, which is all i've gotten this morning with the new patch :\ cripple the weapon system... ok, i get it... but if we're going there we should make it easier to sneak around the zeds.
  20. Well, i'll disagree a little. First off, slower zombies would make the game more interesting and less twitch. Right now, you spawn a zed and you CAN NOT outrun it. Thats a problem. I do like the 28 days reference and all, but I think that having zombies be generaly sense deprived along the lines of senses (more along the lines of The Walking Dead style). In addition, the Arma2 engine is not designed for Melee, in that case people should have access to weapons, especially at the start Finally, if there was an apocalypse, the only people who would probably still be alive are those with guns and/or vehicles. In a war torn country like Cherno you'd see a LOT of people with firearms, even farmers and hunters. You'd also probably be prone to a military presence in cities, many of whom would have battle rifles and armoured vehicles strewn all over the place.

    In the movies, the general zombie affect seems to be near complete lack of awareness, slow movement, and poor senses. I think that should be the way of this... especially since you cant axe your way through them, or blockade yourself inside a house. make them dumb, nearly blind, and partially deaf... but aggro like crazy when molested

    Melee attack

    If they moved slower it wouldnt be an issue (you could at least outrun them into the woods). The issue is that in a game where you have to use a firearm (no melee) you dont start with a gun. It doesnt make a lot of real sense. And i agree that there should be melee, but if this were real, you'd not want to get close enough to have to melee...

    Why not just a RANDOM spawn of one of these per reload. I think in a game where you can not improvise a weapon or fight with your hands (or outrun the zeds) you should start with a weapon...
