  1. So, I'm not going to get back to the "start with a gun" debate, but in a survival situation you would need to grab things that are handy around you. Even a club in the form of a big stick or 2x4 would be useful when NO other weapon is available. Why could we not assume you wake up with some form of improvised weapon (tool such as crobar or axe; makeshift items such as wood boards, etc). It may be more psychological, but I'm ALWAYS more willing to explore if i can at least fight back... even if its fairly futile... Second topic. Clearing towns. I dont think zombies should respawn while you are around. I'm not sure if they do. BUt maybe using te existing arma mechanic we could have groups of survivors clear entire towns and generate small safe-zones. With the number of Zeds you'd need a few people and weapons plus a lot of noise, so it would encourage banding together. I propose that once a town is taken, no more zombie spawns BUT no more gear spawns except what was there first. If everyone leaves, once the last person is gone, a 1 hour cooldown and then the town reverts.
  2. I mean, the mechanics are there for both ;)

    Eliminate M107 and AS50

overpowered? yes, but no more so than other rifles. It has a HUGE pull for zeds and finite ammo. Make the ammo more rare if you like, up the noise

    Claiming & Clearing Houses

Id like to see a "town clearing" activity where enough people with enough guns could clear out a town and claim it. No zeds spawn until 1 hour after the last person leaves. Then it goes back. But GEAR will also not respawn. So you still need to forrage even if you take over a town!
  5. I am so mixed on this. I would LIKE to have a weapon at start, but a gun? why not start with a crobar or even consider just a wooden board? Could be weak but able to address a single zed issue.
  6. its like i heard a million trolls whining and they were suddenly silenced Nice work Rocket, i kinda figured the detection mechanic wasnt ideal yet... alpha build it is :)

    Noob trying to find guns

Well... my usual progress is: 1) Head inland ( you can make it to a town or two with starting water or food... likely why you start with SOMETHING) 2) Check barns and/or churches if possible. decent enough gear 3) Once you have a hunting knife, weapon, some food/water... check out the deer stands for better gear 4) Hunt, forrage, make few treks into towns for water and food when i cant hunt 5) TRY and find other survivors... sometimes I even head back to the coast and look for people starting off to help out. Company is better than lonliness
  8. I'll admit, I played DayZ first with a gun at the start. I lived about 30 hours then was popped by a player while sneaking around on the coast (yes, bad idea, duh). Since losing the gun i've been able to live about 30-35 minutes but this has taught me a few things about sneaking, being careful, and often even just getting far enough inland before i start hunting for weapons. You do NOT need a weapon right at the start, move inland and find some towns (follow roads if you arent sure, use the sun for direction). Smaller towns have small caches, or even a deer stand someplace. Sure, it is sometimes hard in an alpha because you get overspawning, spawning on your toon, bugs, etc.... but they are being balanced. Most people are used to a game which you are superhuman. We are spoon fed weapons, and able to outlive multiple gunshots. This is more like Arma in which you are human, and just like any other human. Pretend this person is YOU, on vacation in Cherno. Would you have a gun? would you even have water? I have an arsenal of firearms at home, but if the apocalypse comes and i'm at work... I'll be unarmed! This is not a game as much as a simulator (there is a difference) and people should just keep trying different tactics. Guns are good, but any fool can use a gun. Sneaking around, not getting killed, foraging... THESE are the skills of the multi-hour player and stay out of towns and airbases

    Anyone else using TrackIR?

I, too, use a 3 monitor setup and I agree with the poster who said it takes a bit to turn all the way around and feels a little off-putting, but tiker with the settings a bit and you'll find it much better... kind of like when i started DCS A10 and i needed to really tinker to see the radio controls easily. As for the naysayer who felt it isnt good for close combat. I see your point, but you can disable it quickly if needed. I have a mousebutton on my G5x that i set to disable it temporarially

    Lack of an Authentic World

Well, what about the consideration that this mod takes place AFTER the events of Arma2's Cherno missions... thus why there are a lot of US weapons. I think the number of MILITARY style weapons should be smaller though, and the number of civilian type weapons (shotguns, pistols, hunting rifles) should be higher [than military weapons]. I agree we should be able to fix all vehicles, but maybe the parts to repair a Hummer would be much more rare than parts to fix a regular car. Just a thought.

    Anyone else using TrackIR?

I, too, tend to lean in, center, sit back. I find the Z axis is a lot like "focusing" on a specific area. Its fairly real effect...

Since this is Sandbox, make it Sandbox?

You could use the commander build mechanic i think, but crafting is not in the Arma2 code, this mod is just that; it mods existing mechanics not makes whole new ones per se.

    DayZ 1.7.1.5 review and thoughts

I havent gotten to play it YET, but I'm sure there will be MUCH more tinkering and balancing... afterall... its still in Alpha, we still have Beta testing to do!

Frustrated of DayZ? Play ArmA 2!

Warfare BE has been my second addiction. I get frustrated playing DayZ and I go and wipe the field in warfare. Its VERY fun with the combinaiton of PvP and PvE...

    REVERT

Devil's Advocate... You have to contiuously over and under the balance system to find a sweet middle spot. I'm sure Rocket is doing just that. He is trying the balance and i'm sure he will hit a sweet spot soon

    Character wipes with patch releases

This is standard fare in most online games... especially since it makes debugging problems easier

    Hoping for some cool heads...

I think we need to consider some people will not have VOIP and buddies that play (I'm a 34 year old physician, not too many of my friends game) so some people should be able to pair up without kill on sight... we do need to find a way to improve the need to team up

An Idea to Stop most of the PvP

It will make people more reluctant to use guns, especially 1-shot-kill weapons. If they only follow the sound though, as long as you KEEP MOVING you'll be able to avoid most of the mess...

    Anyone else using TrackIR?

Well, this is certainly a way to do it but NOTHING beats being able to look around your environment. Its the best $100 spent on a game short of decent keyboard and mouse

    From an Eve-Online Player...

I'm an eve player for longer than i'm willing to admit. Its similar in the no-consent PvP Its similar that it has PvE Similar that you dont grind skills Different is that EVE has you as immortal and you get your goodies back at the end of a death Different in that there are no missions, listed goals, or territories DayZ has no economy, player cooperation, and certainly no non-combat professions (Eve has mining, production, etc). If you made farmers and housebuilders you'd be able to have an economy and class system, but thats silly...

    Drugs, Drugs, Drugs

but running 10x faster is not what cocaine ACTUALLY does to you. This is the problem, you either want "power ups" or you want reality. In all reality, and after all the combat studies, survival is only decreased by substance use induced impairment

An Idea to Stop most of the PvP

If they were attracted to gunfire you could EASILY take someone with a cannon of some sort and go to one end of town, fire it off, get in a car and drive like hell... while the other person sneaks into the place and is able to get more gear. It could be a cool mechanic and consisent with zombie lore

    Drugs, Drugs, Drugs

OK... if there were a fatigue or sleep meter i'd say stuff like methamphetamine would be good. Morphine is not much different than oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, etc. I think one "Opiate" is plenty. You dont need EVERY opiate or we'd be splitting hairs on how long remifentinal lasts compard to sufentinal compared to standard fentanyl. Its overly complicatd. Cocaine would be a horible drug during this unless you had a FEAR meter you had to overcome, since you'd be re-dosing every 45 minutes to stave off the crash. Alcohol could be a good pain reliever (it actually doesnt increase beeding unless you have liver failure) Tobacco could be use to help with warmth (it does increase metabolism slightly) and appetite like mentioned Why the hell would anyone take MDMA/Ecstasy during a zombie apocalypse? It would have to make your character absurdly trusting, have a terrible crash, and depression 2 days later... Glue sniffing and inhalents just act on the GABA receptor and are similar to alcohol intoxication. Hallucinogenics... what the hell would you want to see that isnt there? Or do you think it should simulate some spiritual experience and revelation Why not Ketamine? Its at least a pain reliever but you use too much and its dissociative and you're unable to move. Cough syrups (DXM containing I'd imagine) works on the NMDA receptor in high doses to cause a dissociation like ketamine though not as severe. So... to sum up... aside from the opiates for pain, maybe benzos (like valium, ativan, xanax) to help you steady your aim... and maybe alcohol as a pain reliever... you'd need a lot more mechanics in place to really make them useful
  24. you gotta be a sneaky-pete (and i dont mean cheap wine) and go through a lot of piles. Other than that not much you can really do... other than hope you happen onto someone's corpse who had something useful. Deer stands are great, if you have something to distract the Zeds
