Apparently Day Z players are not the only ones sick of Arma's engine
z64dan replied to Bad Science's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They just want a new engine, that's all. This is typical of government organizations. If they want something made for them, they'll put out the specifications, and companies will try to meet their specs. Wouldn't be surprised if BIS added a lot of this stuff to a modified ARMA 3 engine and submitted it. -
How do you guys manage to play DayZ with such core problems?
z64dan replied to Tingle's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Agreed. You claim to be a "game developer" yet you talk like a 12 year old kid who doesn't understand the basics of game development (which is probably closer to the truth than 'game developer'). You're playing an alpha. How can it take so long to look for a server? You press refresh, and sort by ping. There's your servers, it takes about 60 seconds. I know for a fact there are tons of servers in Germany. Pretty sure you just came on here to whine or troll. As for fags or gays, that sounds like a personal problem. Check out this article for more information on your condition: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-big-questions/201106/homophobic-men-most-aroused-gay-male-porn -
wuh oh, get ready for an influx of server death!
-
haha. you should of at least looted him and then fallen from the very top :P
-
Hah, yeah, I still remember spawning into a market (bad idea) only to see myself getting axed to death before I could move... live and learn! Or, in DayZ, die and learn!

What I don't get is these people who say "Oh yeah it's definitely realistic for someone to shoot you when you approach a bus." First of all, that's hella-meta gaming. If I saw a bus in real life after the apocalypse, I wouldn't assume that a sniper is waiting to murder me for approaching it. I would think, "oh I wonder if there's anything useful on this bus" and then I would probably find that it's empty (or full of zombies) and then walk away unharmed. Hell, maybe I'd find a couple people in there, sleeping, and then tell them I'm friendly, and ask them if they have anything to trade. Why do people think that everyone suddenly turns into a sociopath after the zombie apocalypse? They don't think that. It's just an excuse to act like a sociopath. "Oh yeah, dude, if this was the REAL zombie apocalypse, people would be sniping you left and right." First of all, nobody would probably have a sniper rifle. Maybe a hunting rifle, but nothing with a 1000m range (maybe 1 out of every 5000 people). And also, if they DID have a super sniper rifle, chances are they've NEVER been properly trained with it. Unless they were in the military, in a sniper training program. Even then, chances are, they are probably a nice person. Tired of these llamas using these excuses for acting like a sociopath. Just admit it. You enjoy murdering people in video games. There's nothing wrong with that. Just don't try to make it something that it isn't.

I've noticed this bug too in previous patches (and this one). Sometimes the zombies just walk through the steps instead of on top of them to get into the large farm buildings, so they look like they're sticking out of the floor. Hopefully will be fixed around the time they stop zombies from walking through other walls :D

My vote: - Standalone - Keep the same engine (but heavily modified). The Arma 2 engine isn't perfect, but there's not many more engines out there that are great for gigantic areas with no loading times. Plus you guys are pretty familiar with it by now. Just need some reworking on the AI. - New map (multiple maps?). Thinking an island in Alaska, and an island in the Caribbean or Indian Ocean. Maybe a bigger map, too, for bigger servers (islands though so people stop going off map) :P - Allow non-hive servers (and characters aren't transferable to hive servers, period) - Allow built-in modding support - Kickstarter would work great! I'll be in for a digital copy of the game ($30) downloadable through steam (or $50 and I get a loot map sent to my house too) :D I know you want to go the Minecraft route, and that also should work pretty well, but no reason why you can't still do a Kickstarter too! But please, please god, make it downloadable through Steam, so I don't have to install patches and stuff. That's a huge hurdle for most people (especially people who aren't administrators on their PC). Or people who didn't grow up with computers in the 90s, and don't know how to install things in general... sigh.

I agree with all the recent zombie talk. They are not very responsive, especially when you start getting some framerate lag. I assume this means that there are just so many zombies trying to do so many exponential calculations per second, that some zombies take too long to recalculate. And then it's chance based apparently, so I've run directly across the field of view of multiple zombies (literally 3-5 feet in front of them, full sprint) and they usually don't notice me. I was in a small town (Polana), so eventually there was probably 50-60 zombies in the vicinity, and they all had to calculate to see if they saw me. I think it might be more effective to only have zombies calculate which are within 100 meters (or whatever max distance) of players. It feels like every zombie (even the ones that are 200-300 meters away) are still trying to calculate if they see me, which really slows down the old FPS. I don't actually know what algorithms you guys use for the calculations, but they definitely need to be improved. Obviously you guys know this though, and are probably working on it best you can. Good job rocket! We all love you!

OK Looks like beta version 94945 is the problem for me. If you revert to the previous version of beta (94876), it works just fine. It solved the "waiting for host" problem
-
Anyone solved the "Waiting for Host" problem yet? I have the latest beta (just downloaded it), and it doesnt work at all...

downloaded in about 2 minutes. now seeding at 70 KB/s! i will update this if i find any bugs

What MineZ is Doing Right, and What DayZ Could Learn From It.
z64dan replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You're mixing up games with reality... In real life, even after a zombie apocalypse, most people would be happy to see another survivor, and be willing to talk or trade with each other.. There wouldn't be the widespread murder that's common on DayZ. Yes, right now if you run in the open and make yourself known, or approach someone without seeing if they're friendly first (which is hard to do anyway) then you're retarded. But is that how it should be? Shouldn't we really be more afraid of the zombies? Should the characters be as accurate as they currently are with guns? Didn't we all just wash up on the beach with a bandaid and a bottle of tylenol? Why are we all expert marksmen? Has anyone actually shot guns in real life? It's pretty difficult, and a hard skill to master. Even at the shooting range with no threat of other people or zombies to bother me, I don't always hit the bullseye at 10 yards (30 feet). Don't even get me started on sniper rifles. Those guys have to go through months or years of training to become the experts that roam the forests of DayZ. We all have to think outside the box with ideas for this game that don't punish any certain play style, but there's too many people on the forums that can't take the nerf bullet. "TAKE AWAY MY SUPER POWERED SNIPER RIFLE, WHICH MY CHARACTER HAS SOMEHOW IMMEDIATELY MASTERED??? HOW DARE YOU!" -
I loot-cycle markets all the time. The problem with loot is this: A market will spawn around 24 loot spots or so. Half of those are either empty or junk, and then half of the loot piles only have 1-2 useful items. So someone comes in and cleans it out (takes the 1 backpack and the 1 gun), and a few pieces of gear, but doesn't clean out any loot spot entirely. Next person that comes in takes a couple more things (maybe a couple clips of ammo and some beans / soda), but also probably doesn't clean out any loot piles entirely. Finally I show up, and the market is full of empty cans and a couple sodas, and about 10 watches. That's it. The loot in this game needs to be smarter. It's way too easy for a market to go from 10 good drops to 0 good drops, with no chance of new loot until the server restarts. Is it an exploit? I don't think so. Is it meta gaming? Duh. But what isn't? In theory every time you spawn, you're a new person who shouldn't even know where the markets were in the first place. And as people said before, it's pretty risky behavior. I can easily spend 5 minutes (with minimal awareness of my surroundings) cleaning out a market. Then you gotta go to another building and wait for stuff to respawn (I don't think loot spawns near people, could be wrong). Plus everyone close would see a giant pile of loot and want to come check it out.

Pretty sure all of the feelings in this thread can be easily summed up with this picture. I agree with the OP on most points. The zombies need to be more difficult. The zombies need to be roaming the country side (even near sniper hills, gosh what an idea!) The weaponry needs to be skewed towards civilian (there's like 20 towns/villages and only 2 small military outposts, don't you think most of the military weapons would be broken/out of ammo by now?) Anyone ever been in a fucking deer stand in real life? Who leaves their AK 74 in a fucking deer stand? Nobody. Why is the military base full of usable weapons, unlimited ammo, and dead soldiers? Were the soldiers fucking retarded? This whole world of Chenaraus doesn't make a lick of sense, and this guy (the OP) posts a suggestion on how to MAKE THE GAME MORE REALISTIC, and everyone goes bonkers. Grow up, you guys. He has some good suggestions. The nametags one will never happen, but I hope gestures (waving, etc), zombie difficulty/areas of infection, and weapon availability gets changed in the game, or the OP is right. It will just remain a huge CoD map with a side order of retarded zombies that are easily dispatched.
