If my friends come over to my RL house and play in the same room with me, is it cheating to speak to them when their characters are in different cities?
-
I don't know how well this would fit into the quasi-realistic scales of space and time unique to this game, unless you plan to wait months for your crops to mature.

I love this idea. I would also like journals taken from corpses to be added to a player's own journal without inventory penalty, passed on endlessly as long as the player doesn't deliberately choose to discard them. It could be very amusing to kill someone and find your own journal on the body. Were they the killer? Did they get revenge on my killer? Maybe they told their own story about it. Maybe they didn't, and I'll have to use my imagination. I spend a lot of time hunkered down waiting for friends and whatnot. This would be a great pastime. Definitely no to any sort of auto-entries, though.

Think of it then as a quasi-realistic twist that fits the game's aesthetic and puts a little extra narrative in your otherwise predictable engagements. I'm not talking weapons that have a 10% chance of exploding on use. I'm talking weapons and ammo that, in many cases, have been passed down for years and stored improperly, failing to act like they are brand new. Most gunsights would still be "close enough". And maybe there's only like a 0.5 - 1% chance of any given bullet jamming, with only a fraction of those jams doing permanent damage. PROS: -Fits the feel of a world where the power is out, vehicles are busted, and beans are worth fighting over. -Inserts a bit of hope/risk into PvP and PvZ encounters that one would expect to be hopelessly one-sided. -Provides a natural "resource sink" to counter what I'm sure is a steadily escalating number of high-end weapons on most servers, even without duping. -Gives a well-stocked player reasons to continue looking for gear, sometimes at deliciously inconvenient times. CONS: -Some players would find unreliable weapons the most annoying thing in the universe. After all, if you've spent thousands of hours playing games where guns "just work", it can feel as jarring as having your mouse die on you. I just find it kind of silly that right now, if I go to an out-of-the-way little town and shack up in a barn for a while with a healthy ammo supply, I can just declare open season on all zeds in the vicinity. Barring an unlikely player in the area, nothing will *ever* go wrong. I know, because I've racked up over 1000 kills on my current character just for the hell of it.

It seems weird to me that as I wander the rusted hulks that testify to the rapidly degrading state of post-apocalyptic technology, every weapon I find has perfectly zeroed sights and never, ever jams. Even without any model changes, I would love it if every weapon had a bit of unique character. "You can take my old shotgun, but be warned that it fires a bit high and to the right." The possibility of weapon jams would spice up encounters. Perhaps some jams could even permanently disable the weapon. This could force some interesting improvisation, both during the fight and in the immediate aftermath. (I know this is probably an engine-level wish that would be outside the scope of this mod, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.)

20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon
Existential replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
YES Maybe I spawn with food and water, but no gun. Maybe vice versa. Try some weighted randomness. -
I desperately want to be able to have a different character on another server. If I have configured my loadout for running with a group, and my group is not online, it is currently counterproductive for me to leave my location. I'm better off not playing. Screw that. Let me play a cool-headed woodsman here, a hot-headed bean bandit there. Limit me to one character per server so I can't engage in exploitative gameyness, but let me explore some different aspects of the game without ditching my friends.

More type of zombies (Woman, childs, etc...)
Existential replied to nekodani's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm not in favor of giving zombies different levels of intelligence, but am all for having more zombie skins and movement patterns reflecting age, gender, and state of decomposition. -
That all depends on how soon after the apocalypse this game is supposed to take place. (Is there Word of God on that?) Feral livestock ought to be around in the immediate weeks and months, for sure. Timing also figures into what kind of dangers would be inhabiting the forests: Weeks and months after? Probably just feral dogs and maybe a rare wolf or bear. Decades after? Probably more abundant wolves, bears, and a resourceful breed of mutt descended from the feral dog population. Those dingos'll eat your babies for sure.

But as it stands right now, most fires are only lit for about 20 seconds, because most fires are cooking fires and meat cooks instantly. Now, I'm not dying to sit around for 20 minutes watching my meat sizzle, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to have to set your food up on spits and retrieve it 5-10 minutes later. This would force you to put a little more consideration into your cooking sites, and you might even have to defend your meals-in-progress.

Wolves, please! It's not unreasonable to think that wolves would multiply and encroach on civilization in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Wolves that were scared off by fires and gunshots would be realistic and create an interesting dynamic, as those are the very things that might alert other players to your location. Ideally, the wolves would have some ability to stalk players, following their recent paths. The wolves don't need to come in huge packs (though maybe they could on the wilder edges of the map). They just need to give us a reason to keep checking over our shoulders in the woods, which for now are much too safe.
