    DayZ uninstalled itself.

I've had the random uninstall of DayZ happen to me to and it had to have been because I had separate directories at the time (Steam on my system driveand the library on my storage) didn't realise it at the time though. You say it can happen to any games in your library, and at random?

Arma 2 Will not let me downgrade

Snipped! Re-read what you said... Is it a stubbornness on the programs part that it just wont die or something? :P

Arma 2 Will not let me downgrade

I still don't see why it is suggested that if you have a DRM free (retail) version of Arma 2 that you should activate it on Steam so you can play DayZ properly, I've never had to (I actually bought mine that way because at the time Steam was a notorious pain in the arse to get DayZ to work on) and even with GameSpy shut down I can still access everything through Commander easily enough. Am I missing something?

    Fractures caused by punching?

Unless the leg or arm was propped on something and you hit the weak point (knee or elbow) hard enough then probably not... No reason why you shouldn't be able to crack ribs with a body shot though, so long as having body armour can protect against it. And, well we all know the kind of damage people can do to skulls with their fists.

    cheaters make game unplayable

I don't see why anyone needs to cheat in any game anymore, I'm nearly 32 and I haven't had to, or felt inclined top use any cheats since I was 10. And back then some games were so freaking hard that you HAD to use them, and that was if you could find them out. I would never had been able to finish Kid Gloves on the Amiga if I hadn't fluked finding the inconsistent 'infinite lives' cheat.. Anyone else remember those days?

    Servers are wrong version

In DayZ Commander (after you've applied the current updates for the Arma games themselves) go to install/update and install latest DayZ Commander (if yours isn't the most recent version.), Arma 2 Patch, DayZ (this adds the @DayZ folder and files needed for ANY of the mods to successfully run) and then the version of Epoch that you need for the server you wish to play on,most of them are updated regularly but some hosts don't update right away. Then enjoy playing.

    Can't play DayZ Mod

You need the free versions of ACR and BAF to get past the requirement, then if you want the hi-res textures for the expansions you have to pay for them. They're available from the Armaholic website.

    The Community

It's not the DayZ community that's gone to shit, it's just that the release of the SA brought a whole load of FPS players that only found out about the immortal words from Steam. My issue is that they don't seem to be going anywhere, and there's more coming. :(

Help me fix my FPS Please!

Upgrade your cpu, nowadays games prefer to run on nothing lower than 3GHz, no matter how many cores you have to spread it across. I was running a GTX 295 (duel GPU right?) with an 8 core Phenom II at around 3.6GHz I think, I forget the model number now so I can't check... Anyway, with the mod on medium settings across the board, I was getting a steady 20-30 frames in towns depending on the population of the server, can't speak for SA as I've upgraded my system considerably since then but I'd imagine I'd have had similar results with it set to lowest settings. Then again I get weird fps spikes in the most random places due to the game not being optimized yet but yeah...

    Train Suggestion!

Because power stations aren't sentient, they don't know that no one is around to NOT use the electricity. So assuming no one shut down the power station during the "exodus" that would undoubtedly ensue during a catastrophe on such a scale, then power stations would keep generating electricity until it's fuel source ran out or a fault occurs. If it's a nuclear power station then it could continue to work for centuries or until lack of maintenance causes it to go into meltdown.

    Low FPS

Yeah, CPU upgrade time for you methinks...

    Can somebody help me

Anti-virus could send out false flags, I don't know if it works the same way nowadays or with Battleye in particular. But I'd get an occasional ban on Freelancer (anyone remember that?), mainly caused by my anti-virus running background processes at random causing my outbound packets to, essentially, queue up causing me too lag quite badly and the anti cheat to think I was running a speed mod (illegal on most pvp servers when it was about) because the information being sent to the server was intermittent and as a result anomalous. Is it possible that that could be happening?

The fuck? Is that really Wesley Crusher?? Makes me feel old!!

So after a time spent on Standalone, here are my thoughts.

This has been discussed a little in the FOX community just recently. I think I fall onto your side of the fence, as well as others do. As good as the SA looks in comparison to the mod, there is just something about the mod that makes me want to play it more, and for some reason I seem to find the experience... smoother in the Arma 2 engine, despite the gritty look (that I actually really like, SA seems too "clean"). With that being said though have you played Breaking Point on Arma 3? No where near finished in terms of the mods content and stability but it has such a good atmosphere (different animal and insect noises throughout the day, honestly, something about the crickets coming out as the sun goes down is kinda therapeutic, despite the hoards wanting to eat your face) and looks to it that one of the guys said that he thinks it's what SA wanted to be and may well have already failed at becoming. I was all for the Alpha at the start, but now I feel like they should have waited until it was in at least it's current state to make it available, I'm kind of under the same impression as you. I'm not 100% sure we'll see a complete, commercial release for it now thanks to the Alpha, at least not the way Rocket or BI may have imagined it.

Serious question about DayZ looks and performance.

Just something that might be worth checking is your HDD('s), bearing in mind I know you don't think it's a problem with your rig. I had a similar sounding issue when playing the Mod on my old computer, except my fps was dropping to 0, essentially freezing every few seconds to a few minutes for 30 seconds at a time. Turned out to be a bad sector on my HDD. Stripped it out and put a different one in, then re-installed everything and it was fine.

    base building

It can be seen as pay to win yes, but what the other guy seemed to be doing (before op saw for himself and made his own informed judgment) was asking for money just to use a functionality of the game. We don't demand that anyone pays anything, in fact most people just use the donate button instead and ask for nothing, but the offer is there for people that feel the need for an incentive. We don't just offer in game stuff, we sell FOX Company themed tshirts, hoodies, phone covers http://www.foxcompanygaming.com/foxmerch, our leader makes leather survival gear like pouches and holders for survival kits as well as belts and wrist cuffs (really good workmanship too) http://www.foxworkshop.co.uk/. All the proceeds of which go into server costs and keeping the main website going. While I agree "pay to win" is a 'cheap' way of getting donations from people, it's far from the only way of getting them. It's just some people like the option to donate that way.

    Admin rights

I think the OP is griping over the fact that as the person who is renting the server he is unable to set a whitelist restriction so that only the people (read "community") who have contributed to the cost of it can play on it exclusively. My answer is that because the game is in Alpha and was primarily released for bug finding and feed back purposes, the devs have restricted actions that may ultimately have a detrimental effect to the long term development of the game because everybody would do it and it would make getting reliable network data incredibly difficult.

    base building

Tell him to find a new server, if the version of the mod has base building in the code then whoever is running the server has no right to be charging money to use a function that is a part of the coding, especially when he has no rights to any part of the game or the mod. We at FOX company had an Epoch and Overwatch server (both allowed building as a mechanic) and as part of our donation scheme allowed you to purchase a URAL loaded with different types of building materials in to build base items (if you wanted to do it yourself) or if you wanted to donate more you could get a custom built base, which we would build in map editor and then inject directly into the server file, and have it laid out how you wanted. Granted we don't have our servers up right now (as we're getting new providers and working on getting our own version of DayZ called FOXMod made public) but it's something you can still see on our site. For a group to run a server with a mod on that has base building as part of the mechanic, to then charge simply for the right to do so (or I'm guessing he'll get banned) is just a blatant example of arseholes coming up with ways to rip people off. If you can, try to get the server address and see if there's anyway to report it. Then avoid it like the plague. If you'd like for your lad to be a part of a gaming community that will look after him then get him to give us a shout at http://www.foxcompanygaming.com and we'll happily take him under our wing, while you're at it bring yourself over as well, you're more than welcome :). It's shit like this that causes people to not trust private servers/mods/communities, when in some cases it's the only thing that keeps certain games alive.

    Alt+Tab

I suppose, but it'll do naff all for you if a player spots you and they have a rifle... you'll only hear the splat of the bullet hitting you before you die lol :P
  22. =fox= damocles

    Alt+Tab

Being able to hear what's happening wouldn't help you much anyway. By the time you heard a noise, clicked on the icon to get back in the game and then spent a couple of seconds waiting for the window to open back up, you'd likely be unconscious and on your way to death anyway. Lesson learned from this would be to not be so impatient about bragging to your mates... you got the screenshot of it, it's not like it's gonna change if you leave it lol ;)

    Cany go back to Dayz

Sounds like a directory error to me, possibly because of a virus. Is your computer fully protected? If not, how often do you watch the p0rnz? ;)

steam down (again) means no fun in dayz

You sure? Steam has only had disconnect issues at my end for 1 day since the meltdown that happened when L4D2 was up for free. And that was this Friday just gone.

    Offline players online NPC's

I kinda see what you're getting at, but I think it would cause too many problems. What came to mind as I read it is what will happen if "Player" gets into a fight with "Bot", gunfight lasts a little while and the "Player" has a hard time killing him for what ever reason and he expels a fair amount of ammo. At this stage of the battle I log in. My "Bot" disappears to allow me to materialize where my login point is and the "Player" is left with his/her arse left out in the breeze because he/she hasn't got anything left to defend themselves with and no vanquished "Bot" corpse to loot for their efforts, so they can replenish their stocks. If there was a way around that one issue alone, then I could see the benefit. But every way I can personally think of to make up for the the possibility of disappearing Bots just leads to other possible issues. Also, while having a tag like + NPC might help with differentiating between Players and non-Players, how many are actually going to notice and not come on here bitching about combat logging players ALL THE FREAKING TIME lol. I know common sense would dictate that they knew what they were fighting, but considering that people still sign up here to bitch about SA being an incomplete game and full of bugs that shouldn't be there (even though in Alpha you'd expect it), I'm far from hopeful that common sense actually exists amongst most people anymore :P.
