Welcome aboard. Read the pinned 'Beginners Guide'. Watch a few YouTube vids to get an idea of the basics. Best advice I can think of: Don't get too hung up on your character or gear. Both are temporary. Work out a way that you have fun playing this game. (Hopefully that won't lower the fun for other players!) Find someone to play with, as that makes the game so much better. REMEMBER that the game is still alpha, and is changing a lot ATM. There are bugs alive and kicking that make some of the simplest things frustrating, but this game is fun to play. So play. Have fun. PS: No matter what anyone says, do not give up a can opener under any circumstances. Let them take your gun and ammo, blood bag you, handcuff you or whatever else takes their fancy. But stash that can opener somewhere safe!!

I was up at Berezino yesterday mapping out the town and only saw 3 people the entire day. The easiest way is to just check on the Z count. If there are Zs in close proximity to a hospital, then you can be pretty sure that it hasn't been looted yet. I don't think there is as much server hoping at hospitals as there are at the military bases. The problem with military bases IS the server hopping ATM. And, in full disclosure, I have server hopped a mil base a few times to get some gear to test a few buggy things. [That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!]. That means you're not able to use the Z count for checking the area. At least until Zs are able to get up stairs and attack those SoBs. So even barracks out at Zelenogorsk can be tricky things. If you find a single barracks in a village somewhere, then you might luck in as it's not as likely that it will be inhabited by jumpers. I've also had a little success hitting up the barrack buildings at the SW mil base that are not right in around the main complex. There's two of them outside the inner fence out by themselves. Other than that, joining a low pop server at night and hit up Cherno or Elektro, or if you time it right one of the mil bases.

NOTE: Searched through this topic but couldn't find any references, so will post this. Apologies if it duplicates any other post. I found that the biggest difference in my framerate came from the FoV setting. I.e. the difference between widest and lowest FoV was a doubling in my FPS. I had wondered about this since my FPS would jump up real high when scoped in (as displayed by Bandicam FPS overlay). I've found that 1PP vs. 3PP also affects FPS with 1PP being 2~3 FPS quicker (doesn't have to render Player is my guess). With the 'Normal' profile (ex. rendering set to 1440x900) and 1PP and smalest FoV, I am getting ~60 FPS in the wilds, and around 30~35 FPS in the large towns. SPEC: AMD FX-8150 @ 4.2 GHz, Win7x64, 32 GB, GTX 560 Ti (1GB)

I think that the northern expansion is going to be around all those empty roads on the map atm. If you go up there ther are a lot of long empty roads and concrete pads dotted about the place.
-
No, I understand what 'Public/Veteran' means but I've been seeing a lot of servers listed as 'Public/3PP:ON'. What does that mean, please? Are there any other things like this that are coming down the line that I should be aware of?

Thank you for the quick reply. Makes sense now.

Just spent all night looting Zelenogorsk and the Military Base. Got up high and decided to take a well earned break to shake off the stress and paranoia that prolonged skulking about can and does induce... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flB3bRhgE_Q

In all honesty, it's the only way he's going to get any ammo 'on target'!
-
His weapon... I'd shoot him for his flashlight! No need to let him even get to the first building. It is not surprising that when watching his videos I see everything I could possibly detest about a DayZ player!
-
Watched the video and honestly don't see what you're complaining about. I for one play the game to actually, you know, play the game. As soon as that 'You are dead' message pops up, I'm going to respawn so as I can, you know, play the game. The fact that I can only be in one place on a server at one time, which means that my corspe and gear dissapear when I respawn is completely out of my hands. There are multiple feedback posts describing the problem and I'd guess that the devs will get to it when they get to it. TBH, I'm more worried about the ability of these players to server jump and harvest loot without penalty. Simply sitting in a military base and server jumping until you have all the good gear hardly shows any skill on the part of the player whatsoever.

Sorry, Korsbeak. It took another 30 minutes before the disk of the sun popped up over the hills there. I did think of posting the entire video, but TBH, that was the most interesting bit (if you discount the mauling I took from the 4 Zs at the base of the tower when I climbed down!)

@FrankieG To be fair, he didn'y say he was server hoping, just that he lucked in on finding an untouched area on spawn. Sounds like a v. lucky respawn is all. @superFluidity The guy jumped you. What can I say. You were tooled up, but this guy comes charging in also tooled up, and he probably wasn't going to give you an easy out. Now if he was coming legit from across the airfield, then you can still manage a graceful exit. But he jumped you. Better safe than sorry.

What is up with the pros killing the noobie
djporternz replied to Greenpeace's topic in New Player Discussion
Fully agree. The real pros are out playing the game. They don't have anything to prove. -
alpha purchase vs finished product purchase
djporternz replied to stranger-danger's topic in New Player Discussion
Jump in now, bugs and all! It can be frustrating at times, especially after 4 hours work disappears into nothing. But at least by the time the full release hits, you'll have a good idea of where everything is and how to use all of the toys you'll find scattered about the place. It also helps to have someone to play with. Solo play can get very repeatative very quickly. This game is really made by the people you actively play with. -
So... now what? (The DayZ Paradox)
djporternz replied to superfluidity's topic in New Player Discussion
Been getting that a lot, too. 9/10 times it just happens to be the (stupid) forced server reset that a lot of servers seem to be using... -
Congrats on the OC success. Currently running my 3.6 GHz AMD FX-8150 at 4.1 GHz. Can push it to 4.2 on a cold day! And yes, the biggest impact seems to come from servers. More specifically, to the player with the highest ping connected to the server. This has been a problem with all of the ArmA series of games.
-
That's all fine and good, but you ain't gettin any of these here pumpkins, mate. Mind you, when I turn these into pies and you turn up with a few bottles of cider... then we may need to do some talkin...
-
ESP hacks. Simple file check would eliminate those. Just need them to turn that stuff on by default. Probably some sort of server load issue with it tho.
-
Never atribute to a hack that which can be accounted for by remembering DAYZ IS STILL IN ALPHA. They have a big sign on Steam that says not to buy this game. Rocket has said not to buy this game, yet. There's that big shiny message that you have to click through each time you launch this game that says this game will stuff you up every which way it can. Yeah, there is a hack floating around out there, but its very limited in what it can do and I'm sure Rocket and the team will plug any holes it shows up when they get back to work.
-
Seems to be the way of it ATM. Servers are checking IP address and only allowing connection of one client per address. Only work around that I've been able to use is to have one client 'hijack' the neighbours wifi connection (with their permission, of course!). Otherwise it's one client, one server. They need to fix this ASAP.

A serious discussion about Combat Logging, Gear Hopping and Spawn Kills
djporternz replied to TimM1983's topic in General Discussion
Three words: Server locked Inventory Play on any server you want, but have the inventory saved only for that specific server. See. All of the listed problems have gone away. Okay, ghosting (not listed above) could still be an issue! And it won't do much for spawn campers. But if you log off in the middle of NWAF, can the head shot on spawn really be unexpected! I've never understood the idea of being able to jump between servers and take your inventory with you, and have never seen it used in anything other than exploitive ways. -
And I bought every single one of them. Mind you, their DLC added new equipment and a single-player campaign in each one. Both of which won't fit into the basic premise of DayZ. DLC for equipment seems too much like pay-to-win which I hope Rocket won't want to head towards, and single-player campaigns just won't fly in a multi-player game! DLC would have to be restricted to maps, IMHO. And that could work. And you missed out PMC and ACR DLC for ArmA II. Not that I'm keeping score ;-)
-
Since we're wishing here, I'll jump in. I'd pay for DLC in a few circumstances. I'd like to see Namalsk in DayZ again, and I'd pay for it just to support the developers of this map and say thank you for their work. Anyone with the required skill to put a map together and have it play well deserves this at least. I wouldn't pay for a DLC that only adds a weapon/vehicle, etc. Too much pay-to-win, there! Anything that can give you a material advantage in-game, should have the same chance to be acquired ligitemately by any player, end of. I don't think we have too much to worry about. Rocket seems to be thinking along similar lines, from what I've been able to infer from his many posts. Now if he'd only kill this 'hive' idea for servers....
-
Probably. I'm working on the assumption that since I own both games and am not telling you how to do this, and definatley not making any money from anything, that it's not going to be worth their while chasing my minimum-wage arse through the courts. And in all seriousness, the ArmA franchise has survived and thrived on it's mod-ability. Hell, the DayZmod required that to even see the light of day. I'm hoping that Rocket and the Rocketeers (i.e. Dev team) are not going to get too up tight if the modding community want to work with their platform.

Come on... Zombies have to have some use in this game. It's not like they actually represent a threat to anything except a new spawn!
