30 minutes? You're joking right? You'd be dead 90% of the time, the next time you want to play. Someone will eventually stumble over you every time. @ ibKabob ah got it now. Yeah well, like I said, I don't think people would be open to such a change. In the end I don't really care, private hive fixes pretty much all the problems regarding this issue.

How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
Sounds about right. Make the game harder = less KoS. You just come to a point where you can't "afford" to kill everyone around you. You'll need help. -
I still don't get it. I have a private hive server I first join the server I gather some loot incl. a weapon I leave to take a break I come back to the server and now I have no weapon?
-
You would have to wait 30 minutes before the timer of 15 minutes gets reset ;) thats also in my original post. But sure every system can be exploited. There's no denying that. And also I like your out of the box kind of thinking regarding this matter, you also have to think about if people would accept it. And that is something I highly doubt. Players will not accept "checking their weapons at the door" as you call it. And regarding your question with the DMR on our server, I'm not quite sure I understand. It will be a private hive server, so you can't be new and already have a DMR. On your first connect you will be a fresh spawn at the beach like everyone else. Why we choose to run a private hive is simple. We have complete control over the server. We have no ghosting, no hopping and combat logging will be significantly reduced as well. We can take action if we suspect cheating and in a worst case scenario we could rollback the server. Also we don't have to deal with shitty admins doing what they want or accept stuff like "donater weapons".
-
That would not work, because that would also kill people that have a legitimate disconnect because of network fuckup.
-
Ok first let me say that I never actually said that I like the public hive. I simply stated to benefits of it. As soon as the game is at a state where me and my friends decided it's worth it, we will be setting up our own (private hive) server. Because we believe the pros outweigh the cons. So no, I do not like the public hive very much. Secondly you just proved my point that you did not understand my idea. I stated several times now that my solution makes ghosting IMPOSSIBLE! You can not go back to the server you last played on as soon as you switch to a new one. So you can server hop (to a certain degree), but if you go from server A to server B, in order to change position and ghost someone, once you joined server B, you cannot go back to Server A for 15 minutes. Good luck ghosting someone with a 15 minute delay.
-
Yes you could, but every time you switch, you'd have to wait a longer period of time before you can join another server (up to a 15 minute total). Would you be willing to do that? I'd guess most people wouldn't. And I'm not looking at only a small facet of the problem, you just seem to think its as simple as switching of the public hive. Pros of the public hive include but are not limited to: in case of performance issues or the server goes offline you can always switch the server if the server turned off forever because the people paying for it, stop playing and don't rent the server anymore, you can just play on a different server (on a private hive all your stuff would be gone) you can report admins that abuse their power for their own gain
-
Well you either didn't read my entire post or you didn't understand it completely. 15s logout timer is for when you're not actually in combat. If you are involved in any kind of hostile action, you stay logged in a lot longer. And "server hop ghosted" is not a thing. Ghosting is when someone is under attack, changes the server, switches position and then comes back to the original server. But he can't do that with my solution because he's banned from the last server if he switches. And that someone logs in behind you could happen on a private hive as well... I log out in the barracks, take a break, come back in, right after you checked them. BOOM you're dead...
-
No it wouldn't totally get rid of it, but it would bring it waaaaay down, to an acceptable level. Sure you can server hop, but you will eventually have to wait 15 minutes. If you're ok with that, go for it. Combatlogging would not work at all, and neither would ghosting. It would be impossible. Because once you switched the server, you can't go back to the last one you were playing on.

Well since they are implementing deers, I'd imagine it can't be that much harder to do a horse. Especially because I'd think mo'capping a horse would be a lot easier than mo'capping a deer.

How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, but like I said it's not so much an idea as an attempt to explain the situation to people who are having trouble understanding what's up with bandits and KoS. And that the problems we're having at the moment, will go away over time, when people get presented with different choices as to how to play the game. Right now it's just, get geared up within an hour or two and then go kill people. Die and repeat. And from your signature I'd assume that you like to play that way. Which is a totally valid choice and I support it 100%. BUT I believe there should be consequences to your actions. Meaning, if you go around electro killing fresh spawns, you should have a really hard time fighting off the dozens of zombies coming at you. Or that you should not be able to fix your broken leg alone and will have to die alone in the woods ;). My point is, banditry should not be the only choice people have and it should certainly not be the easiest one either. It should take careful planing and a tactical approach to be a bandit. A challenge if you will. That's what I like about being a bandit. Having a worthy opponent I have to strike down. -
Well that's the beauty of the standalone. They can rewrite the engine as much as they want to implement a certain feature. I mean they rewrote the whole network architecture, doesn't get more complicate than that.
-
If you think the time you spend traveling is a waste, you're maybe playing the wrong game. Here's why: Being lost when you first spawn was always a big part of the DayZ experience. I remember first logging into the mod and having no idea where I was or how to get where I wanted to go. Dean wants to keep it that way, so choosing a spawnlocation will NEVER happen. I can guarantee you that. Because he even made it harder to find out where you are in comparison to the mod, where you got a little message at the bottom saying where you are. So I don't believe he'll suddenly go the other way and make it easier now. The other thing is, he wants people to explore the map, find new places, stumble over locations they haven't been before. This would be toned down to a bare minimum if you could just select your spawn point and get to where you want to go in 2 minutes. Also it will make loot even less valuable than it is now. So let's say you die, and in order to get to your corpse, you just select the spawn location closest and run the 2-3 minutes to get it all back... ridiculous. I still believe this is a really great idea and will help the game tremendously. Woud give more beans if I could :D One spawn point? You're joking right? How would that work? Everybody just spawns in an arena and its a fist fight to the death? Game over. Basically like the Battle Royal Movie/DayZ Mod. Or Hunger Games. Having much more spawn points could work in theory, because you'd have to try more often until you get the location you want. And that would certainly stop a certain amount of players, but never underestimate the stupidity of some people. They would still try over and over to get a "good" spawnpoint. Thus making this a mediocre solution at best.

How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
bad mojo was joking, hence the smiley at the end ;) And no I'm not saying KoS is bad, I'm saying its a problem in the magnitude it's currently happening. It's just not realistic. -
That is not a valuable option. Some people don't like private hives. They have a number of downsides not everyone is willing to accept.
-
Like I said, they would only require water, because I imagine horses can eat grass and other plants.

How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
Hate to burst your bubble but a skill system like in a traditional sense will never happen. What could happen is that you get better at certain things over time. Shooting, crafting, treating wounds etc. But all that will only make players value their OWN lives more, not the ones of others. So that alone won't help much in addressing the KoS issue. What will help is the need for teamwork. If you can't survive alone. Because the zombies are to aggressive and to strong. The medical system relies heavily on a second person helping you. If hunting and crafting benefit from having a teammate who can help. All those kind of things will help address KoS. -
Rolling Changelog: Stable Branch: 0.32.114557
phoboss replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
Just wow! Amazing stuff -
Spawntimer was not mentioned in the original post. And you better getting used to spawning in certain locations, because I'm sure they will eventually implement something like this in order to stop people from suiziding to find a "better" spawnlocation.
-
Wasteland also exists for Arma2 and in a much better state than the Arma 3 version. But like it was mentioned before, rocket doesn't like the HUD idea very much and wants to avoid it whenever possible. Thus he will not just slap a marker on players if you mark them friendly or hostile.

How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
Bandits will still kill people later on. But they will have to have a tactic and an will have to carefully asses the situation before firing on someone. Right now there is no real danger from just KoSing everybody. But if for example zombies have a much bigger aggro radius for gun shots and they will come running from all over the place, you will think twice before shooting someone. Or if you need help fixing a broken leg and so on, you will HAVE to interact with other players in order to get help. -
How to fix KoS and banditry with this great system
phoboss replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
Yeah that's basically what I meant. Once the game has progressed further the problem of KoS will disappear, for the reasons you and I mentioned. I think you not entirely understood what I was saying. Banditry and KoS are not the same thing. And once the game has more features, gets harder, forces you to communicate more, depends more and teamplay and so forth, KoS will tone down significantly. Just because you can't afford to kill every person you see, because you are depended on their help (however that may look like). Bandits will still exist then, and that's not a problem. Because they have a place in the game. They will just have to be more organized than the KoS "kiddies" are now. Like I mentioned, stalking and waiting for the right moment, not just shot someone the second you see them. There's a BIIIG difference. -

added a couple of thoughts to the original post. -
Added some of the valid points to the original post. Thanks for the great feedback.

Also a very good idea, because from a realism point of view, not everyone is going to be a sketchartist ;) Problem would be printing or copying the pictures. And also for a good picture you'd need to be really close. maybe use a zoom lense... hmmm.... :) Taking them down would be intended. It's a sandbox after all. And yeah of course you would not get a "marker" in the traditional sense. We'd have to come up with a better way. Maybe you feel or hear your heartrate go up. Since rocket doesn't liek HUDs.
