Are these weather effects a bit too much?
Jonah_Hobbes replied to Sistinas1973's topic in General Discussion
Don't agree. Any rain jacket if better than the down jacket. Once healthy the "cooling down" has not effect on me at all, but rain does. Even ruined rain jackets will keep the rain off you. -

Not tried this but will give it a go. Once I get a rainjacket all I get is the perpetual 'cooling down" message. Not died from cold yet. Go the red "shaking" message but found a ruined raincoat and was saved as a new spawn. -
Not new just a couple of questions
Jonah_Hobbes replied to Jonah_Hobbes's topic in New Player Discussion
Just another couple of questions. How long does a dead player last these days and how long does a zombie corpse? Found a fire inside a house - no biggy then outside a pack with ruined equipment a pristine sks and pristine fire axe on the ground next to the pack and ruined clothing. Was it left by someone to help out new spawns? It was at Pavlovo or was it left behind after a corpse vanished? I can't see anyone dying with that gear from a Z bite. -
Logged out and logged back in 30 minutes later and the soldier zombie was there from Balota, I'm sure it's the one I thought I'd shook off. I'm north of kamenka I guess it could have come from the nearby military base but it seems an awful coincidence. Broken arm and leg, lucky I have morphine. edit: The military base was still miles away it was the f*cker from the airfield that followed my trail and then waited for me to log in again!

Just went to Balota as had not been there for ages. Just heading into the first hanger when I hear Z's so I run outside and there is a civilian and soldier one. I get out the axe and they vanish into the prison building wall next to the hanger. I'm running around then these two Super Alien Invisible Teleporting Space Zombies immediately appear on top of me and deal a massive hit that damages my arm?? I'm bleeding and the hit ruins my damaged coat and makes me go "OOOOOFFFFF!!!!" I kill them, bandage and I'm immediately set upon by two others I then decide to leg it as it's all too much trouble and I'm getting scared. They follow me, plus one other from Balota town to Komarovo not giving up, I did stop and wave at them though, then they pick up a couple more at Kemenka and I realize I'm running out of map. I start up the hillside and there's 4 left following me - gaining all the time. So it's stop kill one, run up the hill a bit more, stop kill one run up the hill - until I'd killed them all. Not had a decent zombie train for ages - running up hill certainly used to be a way of escaping them but they just caught up with me quicker. Also the pain in the arm message isn't repeating like a pain in the leg message does. Do I still need to splint it?

You may know what you are doing most people won't. Also I wouldn't like to be a complete novice stringing a decent poundage recurve bow with a string I'd just made out of a wooly jumper- cheerio eye! I hit myself in the face when stringing a bow with the limb and I've heard tales of people blinding themselves. I still maintain that a decent string that will last is a work of art. Where I come from there is one old guy that everybody goes to make their strings because his are superior to everyone else's. Also without the internet, jigs and boards and materials how useful would a homemade string be for bringing down a person or infected? Yes I understand that bows have been around for thousands of years but people don't just come out of the womb with the necessary skills to a make a bow. It would have took generations to make reliable bows and arrows that would last in a prolonged hunting or combat environment. Bear Grylls, and the Dual Survival, Naked and Afraid experts can make a bow to shoot a fish or even a rabbit, but we are talking about killing people and large pray in DayZ. Personally I'd make a spear or even a spear thrower, not that I've tried using a spear thrower but I would imagine that it wouldn't be too hard to make and learn how to use.

Yeah but it's like any internet debate, We can get all sh*tty with folk because we are stuck at home and not face to face with them similar to the way people behave in cars. I can be an arse online but I'm very polite in real life maybe its catharsis?

Not to be stereotypical of any country but just pointing out that you can't really accuse Scotland of being weak as it's long military history shows.

Having a pair? Dying? My Little Pony?

Look at the game. The ruined cars, the broken windows in buildings the outbreak didn't just happen yesterday. Most stuff has been looted and used up already before the rest of the population got killed. This is akin to The Road and it's not America where 50% of the population owns guns. If this game is based on the Czech Republic albeit much much smaller than the guns are going to reflect this. There's only 700,000 guns for 10,00000 people in the Czech Republic. Because they are limiting the military stuff then it's clear the army f*cked off at some point. Also the majority of folk work in service industries or offices - what the f*ck would they know about making a leather backpack or curing animal skin? Bear Grylls might be able to do some basic curing but then he's not under threat of being shot dead by KOS psychos or eaten by the Infected is he whilst he's sat by his campfire. Yeah every guy I know where I come from says they'll go rob the gun shop in a zombie meltdown even though 95% have never fired a gun in their lives. So if this happens you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be fighting over the guns and anything thing else not nailed down. I do archery. Do you know how long it took me to learn how to hit something as small as a rabbit with a modern Compound let alone a Recurve? Do you know what an art form making bow strings is? You can't just pick these skills up you know they take hours and with string making months of knowledge to do them. The game is interesting because you can only farm so much and the chances are you'll get killed anyhow. That's why people get excited over a can opener or a tactical vest because they are hard to find. Look at the rest of my post - When you've finished sewing your leather armchairs and couches and sat watching your leather TV then what are you going to do? What you want is a DayZ version of the Sims or WOW edit: agree we should be able to craft more but lets not have crazy things - realism.
-
Found one and gave it to a noob. Can openers I declare a war on thee. We have screwdrivers and axes!

Sorry going a tad OT. We already have far too much clothing. Most of it is crappy because that's life. I agree they could trade in a few beanies/bandannas for another less obvious backpack or more rain coats. With guns and pistols I'm fine with having different types but the numbers need to stay low. The best part of the game is gearing up - if you flood the game with more weapons it's going to kill it's appeal. Leather working tools are going to be pretty rare also, You'd also need a roll of calfskin or the ability to cure animal skin - how realistic is that "in the field" with bandits and zombie's running around? I wouldn't even know where to go and find awls, some sort of heavy thread, beeswax, (ok beeswax I know), and other leather-working goods in my local area, let alone in a strange foreign country I just got washed up on. I can understand making a splint and even some of the rudimentary backpacks that already exist. I agree raincoats should be repairable with tape. I think any sort of expert crafting would just not be possible in the DayZ scenario. That's more Madmax/ Walking Dead season 3+ territory, when survivors have banded together and fortified a place - several months or years on. Is it even possible in DayZ as the population has been pretty much wiped out? I'm not for ultra realism because it's a computer game, but we shouldn't be able to make a harpoon gun out of a stick and a fishing hook, that's where crafting gets silly. A tarpaulin/plastic sheet with a hole cut out for the neck would make a raincoat - that's realistic. I think the balance is pretty good at the moment. Not perfect but not bad either. Crafted items should be inferior to machine-made items. Although I would tone down the item degradation a bit. I love it. I gave up DayZ because I could fully gear up, (the best gear), in 3 hours and was left with nothing to do as they game does not have endgame content. The Devs have realized this. so to keep it interesting we have to keep searching for replacement gear. If I'm stupid enough, (I am at the mo), to keep getting hit by a Z then my clothing should get damaged. I'm crapping myself as my lovely tactical vest is now damaged, my cargo pants are ruined and even my fireman's axe is now worn. This means I can't wait to log back in a start looking again. My last proper toon lasted 5 months and I was bored playing it yet to stupid/scared to risk killing it. I left DayZ and played other games. I think they game is heading in the right direction, I'm glad I came back.

I had a hard time shooting Zeds last night, taking several shots more to kill one, many times the shots just missed and this was at short range. Never had a problem with it before wondering if there was just a touch of lag as it was worse with other players around. The melee is taking me two hits with a fire axe to kill soldiers, anything else is one hit but it can seem wildly inaccurate sometimes taking 3 hits which is ridiculous really. The only time I'm sure I'm going to kill is taking Z from behind when it's still. Like I said this is all fairly recent and I've never had issues before my break from the game. Good advice on here though and will try and aim lower which seems to be the consensus.

To the two guys I ran into at Green Mountain today. You were doing the floaty/lag thing when you came after me and I crapped myself. I'd like to know how close those shots were I fired at you before I bravely ran away. Sorry no firefight but self-preservation kicked in. You were both geared up as well so I couldn't take the chance. Be still my yellow heart.

Mistakes you see people do all the time in DayZ
Jonah_Hobbes replied to anderswhk's topic in General Discussion
Not a mistake but happens. New Spawned players asking for a gun. Yeah like I'm going to give you a gun so you can shoot me in the back. This is why I have guns and you are a new spawn because I'm not stupid. New Spawns choosing to meet up in Berezino,.. -
I write "I'm behind you" or "Don't turn around"

I've been wearing up to 3 ruined raincoats all 3 colors and I didn't get wet. -

I'm a bit fed up with looking for rain coats. They keep me dry even ruined but then you can't store anything in them as if you get infected-tapped it damages everything stored in the raincoat. I posted on suggestions that duct tape should be able to be used to repair raincoats. -
In a country that currently rains 75% of the time and the ludicrous lack of rain coats, I reckon duct tape should be able to repair them like sewing kits can clothing. I know the devs are testing weather and cold etc, but the focus of the game should not be hunting for a rain coat.

How are we supposed to play the game right now?
Jonah_Hobbes replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
No I don't think they do either and I think they care about the game. But I think the devs knew exactly what they were doing when they launched the alpha and it's paid off. You get millions of sales channeled into the company/game. You get thousands of people testing the game and paying you for the privilege. You have a disclaimer that no matter how random or bonkers things are in-game - you paid for it and you agreed so STFU. And when the game game is finally released if its sh*t who's going to do what? License to print money and I don't have a problem with it -
Not read any posts but just to say I died of cold and now I scared.

I use Frapps. -
Not been that badly injured yet since coming back to the game, do they still have the "hurrrrrrnnnfffff!" audio sounds that accompany serious injury? Those sounds that are a mix of having a w*nk and pooing?

Jonah_Hobbes replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
OP After a break of a few months I died twice just relearning the keys etc. Then I noticed there is a lot more food lying around so as people say the priority has shifted from hydration, food, weapons now to Clothing, weapons, food, hydration. The same principle of avoiding the big towns and heading inland after spawning still stands but there really is so much stuff lying around in places that have already been looted. I got to semi-geared which to me is able to stay alive with a ranged weapon and ammo before plunging to my death/death by bug from a tall building. I'm now just short of semi-geared again and I,just need ammo. Rain jackets and Farmers Hoes are the things to keep your eye out for, for the first 30minutes to an hour. then you can start stocking up on the usual Fireman's axes and guns. Also try a slightly lower population server if you can't find anything. It's still a game after all and you should be having fun. -

Yeah I know that's how I should be it's just pretty hard to risk yourself with all that shiny gear...
