You need to install Arma 2 and Arma 2 operation arrowhead. Then get DayZ commander http://www.dayzcommander.com/ and it will automatically detect your Arma installations. Then you go to the Install/Update tab in the upper right hand corner on DayZ Commander and can install the original mod along with all the other mods for the mod easily

What MadTommy said, adding that Hardcore and Regular servers are on a separate hive (as well as the experimental servers, both separated between Hardcore and Regular, if you play on them) So, you can have one character on Hardcore and one character on Regular.

Melee has been a foreign concept to the Arma engine for.. ever. Hatchets, in the mod, still have to be treated like guns... they have "ammunition". They come preloaded with a million or so hatchet bullets...

I don't know if it's cultural or physiological, but it seems that wemyn can't handle adrenaline as well as men... come to think of it... Oh snap! Testosterone... THAT motherfucker builds up our tolerance to adrenaline... and cuts our lives about 15 years shorter on average than wemyn...

You lost me as soon as I saw an implemented safe zone (not player created). And your one point about persistent items will come, that is part of the DayZ experience... having a place to stash your loot. That being said, I think once players have a place to hang their hat, i.e. permanent objects on specific servers (not necessarily private servers, public servers can handle permanent objects all by their lonesome), then a lot of th eproblems you see in the game will correct themselves a bit.
