Search around the forums. There was a guy who posted photos from his trip 1-2 years ago.

Why is so dark? :) Have you tried another servers with "green" ping values? What is your game version? Tested your internet speed? Check your Windows Firewall settings, open ports for Dayz if necessary.

Main menu character? It's just local settings file stored here: C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\DayZ. Not connected to your actual character. Feel free to connect to any server, your old character's data will be safe because all data stored online.
