A common hive doesn't mean anything at all, you could have easily had official servers that are not connected to the public hive that are using 'official rules' and anti-hacking measures, the notion that 'anti-hacks' make hacking easier is quite frankly bizarre cause the public hive on the DayZ mod was a hackfest and most private hives were far safer than the public hive so it's really quite strange that you could claim that anti-hacks made the game worst. If BI had supported 'official private hive servers' from the start you'd have vanilla servers not connected to the public hive which would have been the best of both worlds, instead all private hives will be unofficial and customized and indeed some of them will have more weapons and vehicles. This is completely besides the point though, the point is 'what are the benefits of the public hive in the first place' and the only benefit is 'character persistence between servers', a marginal benefit at best. Everything else you've mentioned is not a result of the private hive infrastructure but of the fact that unofficial servers are unsupervised, as they should be. The solution is as I've said 'official' private hives.
-
People consider 'taking your character to different servers' to be this grand and awesome thing even though it's completely meaningless, it actually hurts the game as it discourages people from sticking to a single server and forming a community. It even makes the game less realistic as it makes your character a member of the cast of 'sliders' where you travel into infinite parallel worlds. It's just a gimmick that adds nothing to the game, it's a big part of the reason why eventually people will gravitate toward unofficial public hives and the official servers will become mostly abandoned, as they were in the mod.
-
Nope, it's a bad idea that adds nothing to the game. Every server should have its own hive = zero problems.

If you bothered reading the thread you would have noticed that it deals with the question of "whether mods should be allowed in this game" as in, 'in general' not 'whether you are going to use mods'. Do you seriously fail to realize that you are talking about a game based on a mod? Rocket was a mission creator and a mo-cap artist before he started working on a mod for a game made by professional game makers. For that purpose, professional game makers are far from infallible. The argument about 'DayZ is hard' does not lead to 'so mods shouldn't be allowed!'. As pointed out by several posters, there were several mods that made DayZ a lot harder than Vanilla, such as DayZero and 2017. And let me blow your mind, once private hives are allowed (as they are 100% going to be) server owners won't need modding tools to change the difficulty of the game, increase spawn rates or even give players starting M4s and let everyone spawn in NWAF if they want, that has nothing to do with mods, so once again, your argument against mods from a difficulty perspective is simply completely irrelevant. People being stubborn about this issue is ridiculous given that Rocket (the 'professional video game maker', yes?) had already stated that there is definitely going to be mod support in this game, seems like that one dude didn't forget where he came from and what this game actually is.

When roleplaying, do you start each new 'life' trying to perform some other role? acting like you're a different person. This is important for my immersion.
-
Are you even listening to yourself? "DayZ achievements to mean something"? It's a video game! Someone else playing a video game in a different manner than you has no effect what so ever on how you play or enjoy the game. Mods will be run on different servers, as they were in the DayZ mod, noone will be able to play on the same server as you with a mod that gives him magic powers and apache helicopters with infinite ammo, your case is literally "But when I tell other people that I play DayZ good they might think I was playing with some mods and not be as impressed with my achievements", it is a completely insane and egocentric argument. If we are to go to my previous argument, how would you feel if someone told you "Playing DayZ is a cop out for people who can't cut it out playing multiplayer ARMA, whenever I tell people I'm good in ARMA they just roll their eyes at me and ask me if it's because I play some lame zombie mod". Utterly. Mental. I'm sorry but you guys are being super weird about this. 'My achievements playing DayZ', I seriously can't believe that an adult might think this is a valid argument.
-
If you don't like mods you should go back to playing ARMA2:OA. The fact that people on the DayZ board of all places would be arguing vehemently against mods is unbelievable.

What do they say about hitting a gas pump with an axe? Alternatively, what do Jamie and Adam think about the myth of using a saline bag to restore a person to full health? or injecting heroin to mend broken bones?
-
This game will never fulfill its potential before we have the ability to drill a hole in the fuel pump creating a trickle of gasoline you can set on fire with a lit cigarette.
-
I think hitting the pumps in petrol stations can cause an explosion, might be that.
-
Natural selection and intelligent design are mutually exclusive concepts. Spoiler alert. Sorry, I guess you didn't reach that chapter yet.

Why don't people suggest that open food containers should spill in your backpack if you don't have plastic bags or tupperware dishes to seal them with? "STANAG Magazine 60 rounds (coupled) - Coated with beans - RUINED"

I will be ecstatic if at some point your character will stop freezing in its spot randomly like it would in the mod. Get out of a vehicle? - Wait a second I need to freeze for a second while you're taking fire. Ok now we can move again, if you weren't dead already that is. Wake up from being unconscious? - Wait a second I need to put an invisble rifle on my back and pull out an invisble pistol before grabbing my actual rifle. Ooops you're dead already. Or maybe you passed out again. Who knows. Or in the mod "You can't drink a soda while moving! what are you a madman?" It seems to me like this game has too many animations and transition animations for its own good, we could do with a few less intricately detailed animations for some minor actions in exchange for a lot more re-activity. And for crying out loud don't get me started about being forced to stand up and teleport 2 meters into the air just so you could climb down a ladder.

How to stimulate an Emergent Economy in DayZ - discussion
AmirDayz replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I bet those tradeposts won't at all be camped 24/7 by bandits, bandits who are in no way associated with the people running these 'trade posts'. Yup. -
What happened to the word 'while'?

How to stimulate an Emergent Economy in DayZ - discussion
AmirDayz replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Yeah, for there to be an economy player interactions need to be usually less violent then say "See person, kill person, take his stuff", In fact some might say that the existence of an economy was only made possible by the existence of civilization, which in its way somewhat discouraged just killing everyone you see and taking their stuff. So yeah, I don't think that DayZ is the kind of game that can develop a player-driven-economy. -
Exactly!!!! Effing Exactly!!! Stop trying to add Zombies to my ARMA games you weirdos! Go play some other game if you want to play a game with Zombies, no room for Zombies in my ARMA game! And take your 'Rocket' with you! (Do you realize how asinine your post is?)
-
Eventually, Maybe. Modding will be possible sometime in the future, whether it will allow modders to do everything they did in DayZ mod is unknown at this point, presumably the answer is yes as it is based on the same engine. Know one really knows anything about modding at the moment. Gonna have to wait for quite a while (probably not before the end of 2014).

I... ah... The DayZ mod files being 'open source' had nothing to do with the vulnerability of the ARMA engine to script injections. The fact is that SA still allows injecting scripts as many hackers have demonstrated to this point. Modding brought you Origins, Epoch and DayZero, hacking was possible since day 1 of the mod as it was in the standalone. Moddability does not increase or decrease the likelihood of cheating.

BREAKING NEWS: loot spawn on restart is intentional!
AmirDayz replied to DropBearChick's topic in General Discussion
There's a very vocal segment of posters in this forum and on reddit who take pride in being 'hardcore' and 'rolling with the punches', they think that everyone who expects to have fun playing DayZ is 'lazy' and 'should go back to playing CoD'. It is really weird how these people derive so much pride from playing a video game in a certain way that they perceive is 'harder'. Don't worry people! I'm sure that in the future someone will create a mod that only spawns one rifle and 10 cans of beans every 4 restarts, the water pumps will also run out of water after 5 uses so you'll be able to run across Chernarus starved, parched and unarmed for 45 minutes before you die and restart. It's gonna be epic, you'll be so hardcore. The rest of us might want to play a game that is fun, please don't judge us. -
Cheating had nothing to do with modding or the opensource nature of the project. Cheating is possible in SA right now. Cheating will forever be possible and trivial in a game based on the real virtuality engine. Admin abuse will exist on private hives, it also exists in a lesser scale on the public hive right now. Don't worry about mods, none of the problems you described had anything to do with mods.
-
That is hardly relevant, the SA will provide a base experience that will be modified by mod developers to cater to different playing styles and concepts. Just as the DayZ mod was. There are already many things that existed in some mods that Rocket said won't be present in the SA, such as Origins/Epoch style base building. Regardless, moding does not only imply 'adding features' it also implies 'removing features', what if some people would like to play a more classic DayZ game with less emphasis on eating 30 cans of food to survive? Why should this trouble so many people? Rocket already said: Modding will be supported. And that's a good thing. The player base being fractured shouldn't trouble people more than the notion of people getting bored with the game to the point that they stop playing it, the end result is the same. The player base being fractured is such a factitious argument either way, as long as you can find one populated server that caters to your play-style you shouldn't be concerned with what other players are doing on different servers.
-
Some people are really concerned with how other people will play the game. Rocket already said that modding will be supported, all of your arguments are asinine. The whole point of going to standalone has nothing to do with 'so people won't need to mod it' that's just incredibly obtuse. People will mod the standalone, people will play on private hives and the game will be better off for it, much like the mod was. People should be less hysterical about the concept of people playing DayZ not in the way godRocket Intended It

BREAKING NEWS: loot spawn on restart is intentional!
AmirDayz replied to DropBearChick's topic in General Discussion
You are seriously delusional, Rocket's statement which contradicts yours has already been posted like 2 times in this very thread. I do not have the patience to explain game design and 'challenge vs. reward' concepts to someone who thinks that the purpose of a game is to frustrate players and have them run in an empty wilderness for 2 hours before giving up, so i'll just post this thing that Rocket wrote: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/156129-confirmed-upcoming-features-for-dayz/ See that? where it says "RESPAWNING ZOMBIES & LOOT". Crazy huh. -
There are still tens of thousands of people playing the mod at any given moment. It actually never died. At this rate modding is going to be necessary for SA to actually become a fun game as Rocket seems to hate fun and wants to make SA his own personal experiment at creating the most tedious and frustrating game ever conceived. It does look pretty though.
