rocket That is part of our stability work. One of the major problems we have now is inconsistent state of the players character when respawning/logging in. When you die, sometimes you death is processed sometimes it's not, or sometimes there has been weird issues with the database. At best, it has been causing problems saving the state of the character. At best, it has been causing crashes of the entire server and all the clients connected. In order to make it more stable, myself and one of the programmers have been refactoring the client into game process so that it is more streamlined and robust. I may be bad at my job, wrong, and many other things, but I am no liar.

rocket The problem with implementing this kind of physics is not engine related, it is scale related. In Elder Scrolls, your computer only has to deal with the immediate scene. It can focus entirely on this. It doesn't need to send the state to other people. Imagine having to synchronize that state to 50, or 100, or 150 other clients? When you knock the table, how do you tell the other clients where the object is? Do you send position and orientation updates every frame? Do you send the initial force and let the clients work it out for themselves? Game design is much less about good ideas as it is about being practical and aligning your chosen feature-set properly with the core pillars of your game design. Essentially, you're not wrong. Realistic physics for everything would be awesome - but that needs to be balanced against everything else and the practicality of it all. We have actually implemented a middleware called Bullet Physics into DayZ, which is being used to develop physics for objects. The primary focus is ragdoll but it will also involve throwing, and possibly some cosmetic things. The cosmetic stuff is much, much easier because it can be done locally. But physics on objects is a much lower priority that things that have a real impact on game design, such as construction, barricading, cooking, vehicles, horses, hunting, bows, etc...
