Should Rocket go sooner rather than later?
Macdeth replied to banjo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
as soon as rocket announced his desire to walk away from DayZ it was inevitable that he'd become a lame duck leader, it's human nature we just lose fear and respect for a person once we know his days are numbered. In my opinion he seems to view this project not as the launch pad for his career, that was the mod, no, he views the standalone as some kind of obstacle that stands between him and his future. -
PLEASE make the pig safe is unicorn of dayz

ladies and gents i give you a humourless soul, a man bereft of happiness, a broken spirit condemned to spend the rest of his days trying in vain to offload the misery life has burdened him with, a killer of fun, a truly joyless miserable sumbitch. -
you lost me at about 32% through the video when i realised the intro still hadn't ended

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
Macdeth replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
Zombies still wall/fence glitch, not as much but they do. Zombies can now land a hit on you from distances of 20 metres + even when you are accelerating away from them and the gap between you increases they still manage to land hits, even through solid structures. Zombies are virtually impossible to hit with melee weapons. Zombies have X-ray vision, no amount of solid obstacles between you and them will cause them to lose sight of you, even hillsides and huge buildings fail to break Line of sight. Please devs, it's time to catch up with the rest of the gaming industry and get the melee system to work correctly, create some kind of Line of Sight functionality, some sensible collision detection would be nice and implement a stealth system, by all means make zombies formidable but give us the tools to counter them. -
it is players like this with this kind of attitude that carry the flame of humanity across the post apocyptic wasteland, I imagine these bandits felt terrible when they read the note and I am sure they felt great when they did the right thing and completed their victims mercy mission. Could it be that a single note could profoundly affect they way a group of koS bandits approach the game in future? The lessons in this tale are plain for all to see, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword and good can defeat evil through words and deeds and being in possession of a good soul can help you win all kinds of battles.

Why my 'W' key is better than my 'V' key? First off some technical info just to establish that the problem lies not with me or my ISP - I have a premium 100 Mbps Broadband package, I never have trouble finding servers with ping in the region of 10 -14 and I play many online games and very very rarely experience issues like those that seem to plague DayZ. Today I was running from a zombie when I approached a fence I hit the 'V' key and nothing happened, I hit it about 7 times and at no point did my character respond, he responded fine to the 'W' key and to the 'ALT' freelook key and to all of my mouse inputs, but as for 'V' the message just weren't getting through. I eventually ran around the fence and found refuge in a barn where I attempted to switch to my axe using the allotted hot key - '2'. Nothing happened, I hit it around 8 or 9 times and nothing happened, my character responded as ever to my 'WASD' key inputs, it responded to my 'ALT' freelooking and all mouse inputs but for some reason the '2' key input just never reached the server. Eventually I realised the game was going to kill me again so I manually dragged the axe to my characters hands and proceeded to kill the zombie, after I'd finished I switched back to my rifle, applied a bandage before opening and eating a can of tuna all this was accompanied by the soundtrack of long finished 'axe swipe' sound effects, I mean come on guys it's 2014 here. So please will someone explain to me how certain keyboard/mouse inputs have a near instant response while others have zero response or, if you are very lucky a delayed response, how can that be? Is this something we just have to accept? will this game and its 1990's level of laaaaaag ever be fixed? or is it just part of the RV engines outdated legacy? Why on earth have you added character control inputs that the server can choose to ignore? where is the sense in that?

The way it so often is, cruelty reigns.

I met this bloke in the woods north of Berezino, he was running around trying to kill these 2 woman zombies with his axe. I parked me arse on the ground and watched the show. He was trying all sorts of techniques, first he tried running around a tree and then sidestepping and swinging as the zombie went past but that didn't work, he tried backing away and swinging as the zed lunged but that didn't work. He then tried running at the zeds and spinning round as he passed em before swinging but that didn't work for him either. I opened me mic and said 'you alright there matey?' but he was to busy to hit the caps lock key. The best attempt he made was when he stood still, waited for the zeds to lunge then sort of moved a bit to the side, spun at the same time and then swung the axe, this worked after 7 or 8 attempts and he got one. I opened me mic again 'yay, you done one geezer' but he was still to busy to reply. he just couldn't hit the other zombie, he even went back over previous techniques that had failed to see if he they would somehow work for him this time, I was getting bored so I stood up, raised my mosin and headshotted the zombie, he suddenly stopped and stood dead still while the axe swipe sound effects continued to roll 'uh, thanks...' he muttered. 'No problem' says I befoe blowing his brains across the forest floor. I got a worn can opener, 2 boxes of mosin ammo and a pristine medical kit off his corpse, not bad value really and I guess the zombie dance was a freebie.

I don't agree that the SA is boring, I am sure kids with Attention Deficit Disorders find it boring because they have a condition that means they require constant stimulation and to be honest I hope this game is being paced in such a way to weed you fuckers out. but for us normal folks who don't live on refined sugar and caffeine are having a lot of fun. Things to do in Standalone Looting Running Being a Medic Parkour Character Health management Trolling Exploring Crafting items Making fires Player Hunting Player Helping Hunting animals PVP PVE Making friends Making enemies Orienteering Robbery Torture Fishing Cooking Collecting items Reading Surviving Sniping Camping Screenshot Photography etc etc etc Have you done all of this then?? run out of ideas have yer? It's not the game that's boring son...it's you. Take any of these things to do and you can build an adventure around it if you have an imagination and some patience, for example I met 3 players on the last experimental build who were setting up a diner, they were hunting for meat, collecting pots and pans and firewood and drinks and cans of food and all the rest and they planned to set it all up in one of the pubs, just for the fun of it, to feed randoms. If you need bursts of adrenalin every 30 seconds well, counter strike.

Help with keeping my cool when meeting players?
Macdeth replied to JJ_'s topic in General Discussion
not necessarily, I mean the strongest instinct we have is the survival instinct, they don't say to soldiers during training 'stop caring about your life' in fact we were told the opposite, nothing focuses the mind better than fear of losing something you care about be it your life, your friends or your gear. it is a powerful source of motivation if harnessed and channelled in a positive and constructive way. Detaching yourself emotionally is good advice but is more helpful when preparing for loss, it's a coping strategy for when you have lost whatever it was you supposed to not be caring about but do really because you're a human being who values stuff. logic and reason don't play too much of a role in the first moments of a situation and thinking can be the worst thing you can do, although logical thought clearly plays a role in the later stages as you formulate a plan of action, initially the best tools we have to help us maintain control and to act in our own best interests is Instinct and experience (which comes from training or practise) and the ability to empty your mind completely and allow those instincts to tap into whatever experience you may have in order to guide you through whatever situation you find yourself in. -
Help with keeping my cool when meeting players?
Macdeth replied to JJ_'s topic in General Discussion
stalin was no mug, you don't get to control a country like Russia unless you know how to manipulate, dominate and control others with words and deeds. Back on topic staying calm is everything in a game like dayz, it really matters because situations often come out of nothing. 2 hours of bumbling around the forest not a care in the world then suddenly PLAYER!!! it's something everyone needs to work on because I don't care how good you are at twitch gameplay an all that, its always calmness that prevails, if you find yourself jumping out of your seat and feel your heart exploding out of your chest and all your thoughts becoming scrambled whule you struggle to control your breathing and the other guy is slowly moving towards cover while switching to his rifle....you are probably about to die. -
Help with keeping my cool when meeting players?
Macdeth replied to JJ_'s topic in General Discussion
pvp in dayz can be a stressful experience an really it comes down to how you cope with stress, you can learn to stay calm but if you are a nervey or panicky sort of bloke you will always struggle. I spent 5 years in the army so staying relaxed, calm and collected in stressful situations comes natural and I actually find my focus improves when the shooting starts and I seem to have loads of time to make decisions, time seems to slow down and my senses become more alert and aware of my options. I don't always get it right but I do always stay calm and in control of my actions. -
discovery? really mate? me and my mates 'discovered' this about 4 weeks ago or however long the current experimental build has been goin.

Where do we go if GSPs are not dealing with abuse?
Macdeth replied to daringd's topic in General Discussion
the problem is the GSP's are not motivated to do anything. The guys that rent the servers are the GSP's living, why would they deprive themselves of income just to keep a gamer in Liverpool happy. Again it comes down to BIS, they need to be actively involved in this, they have delegated running of servers to the community they have delegated anti hack to battle eye and they don't seem to care about the fact that it don't work. they need to have someone who is monitioring the reports and the actions of the GSP's, if the GSP's don't act against the bad admins they lose the right to rent out DayZ servers. This would end the GSP's indifference overnight and dealing with bad admins would suddenly become a major priority. -
What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
Macdeth replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
they are running around buying studios so money is there, my point is spend more on keeping the game clean. These companies that sell cheats and hacks, why don't they do what the british government does and approach one of these companies and say 'come and work for us' fight fire with fire, use a bit of imagination. I am sure they are doing a bit but it aint enough. -
What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
Macdeth replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
Why don't BIS redirect some of the millions and allocate a couple of the 160 staff they keep banging on about to focus purely on this issue, afterall it's their game the hackers are ruining, it's their loyal honest customers who are suffering. it's as thought they don't care. Ask around Rocket, see what people think about this and I believe most players would appreciate a concerted attack on hackers rather more than a few new hats. I know BattleEye is supposed to be policing it but that don't mean BIS can wash their hands of the issue and ignore it, a two pronged approach is needed, twice the effort = twice the success. infinite ammo for example, I am sure 2 good coders working together could come up with a program that scans inventories when players join a server, if it sees infinite ammo mags hand out an insta ban. This would end infinite ammo overnight. -
it's only normal if the worlds physics is inadequate. for example if a player dies close to a wall in RV then the body falls through the wall, legs in the room torso and head outside in the garden, this is an engine issue. Players glitching through walls and floors, engine issue and these issues will never really be solved until the engine is changed. I hope this is what rocket is doing. There should be no need to have to program the AI to walk around walls simple because if you didn't the AI would walk through walls, most engines remove this messy and complex problem by simple giving solid structures the correct properties. RV just never did that.
-
Not all games, many engines give solid objects the properties of solid objects, for example cryengine, there is no need to 'tell' AI where buildings or walls are, the AI simply cant pass through such objects, then programming AI is much easier because it can quickly calculate the best route to take avoiding impassable obstacles. The fact that rocket was trying to fix zombies by effectively 'telling' them where every solid structure was and creating a kind of map that the AI needs to follow just goes to prove that this engines approach to physics was not right for this game.
-
I refer you to my response 3 posts above yours, yes lighting is hopefully easy to fix, but the physics of the dayz world, the way objects react to each other (zombies and walls for example) is directly linked to the engine, and now, hopefully this can be completely redone.
-
I'm not complaining about zombies, I am talking about the engine. This is the problem with rockets approach so far re zeds, he was focused on trying to 'fix' zeds, when he needed to 'fix' the engine. It is a fault with the engine that allows zombies and light to pass through solid objects (as he now belatedly accepts), pathfinding is another issue altogether and is related to AI. If the pathfinding flaws try to take a zombie through a building the building should stop the zombie in its tracks, if the zombie cant get through walls then the problem is mostly solved, pathfinding can come later, we just need solid objects to behave like solid objects and possess the same properties for light and zombies as they do for players and bullets. And for that to happen we need drastic changes to the engine.
-
what are you talking about???? how is torchlight passing through walls connected to pathfinding? Zombie pathfinding is related to AI, however the fact that walls don't stop zombies or light is purely an engine issue, the engine has faulty physics, even though bullets 'know' to stop or lose velocity when they strike a wall or fence. zombie pathfinding is a separate issue, that is related to the route a zombie chooses to get from a to b, if the pathfinding wants to take a zombie through a wall the wall should stop the zombie in its tracks. The fact that solid objects are solid for players and bullets but not for light and zombies is an engine issue lol
-
what kind of engine makes walls, fences, rocks and buildings behave like solid objects towards players and bullets but not to light and zombies? Thanks god they are finally waking up to what has been patently obvious to the rest of the world for many many months now.
-
the point is they are going to make much needed changes, the arma engine is a horrible clunky platform riddled with 10 year old bugs and so many band aids that have been applied over the years that it must be a complete nightmare trying to work with. I just wish they'd realised what everyone else realised at the beginning. DayZ is too good a concept to waste on this engine, it deserves a chance to be the game we all imagined when SA was first announced instead of a prettier but buggier version of the mod.
-
about time they done this, I love arma but everybody knew that it was the wrong engine for dayz. Just a shame it took em 2 years for the penny to drop

this.^^.. dayz ain't no social media app its an apocalypse survival experience. I kill 90% of players I see and I rarely say a word. I have a mic
