Can we stop the CoD/BF3 name calling?

And you are all exact proof of everything I mentioned in my post. Out of you all, I see two constructive posts and the rest are trolls. Nice representation of your community.

Dear rocket, f**k humanity. Focus on Morality.

I appreciate that the OP used some intelligence to shine light on something many of us have been thinking of. I mentioned something similar to this yesterday and have since seen a lot of people saying similar things in this thread. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11015&pid=102540#pid102540 Honestly, unless you truly are a psychopath, killing another human being (especially repeatedly) will do SOMETHING to the stability of your mental state. One thing everyone keeps mentioning that is peeving me off is that "It's the end of the world, man! All the old rules are GONE! Kill or be killed, YO!". I can believe this attitude if your character represented the 3rd or 4th generation AFTER the apocalypse, but that's not the case. It's obvious that your character (like us playing it) came from a world with rules, laws, and morals that (despite what you WANT to think) have been ingrained into us. To pretend that it being the end of the world scenario will completely wipe that is ridiculous. Those beliefs WILL carry over, even in the new hell-on-earth.

    FIRE FIRE FIRE!

I saw this too and assumed it was just another crazy graphical glitch. I was in the woods though, so for a moment I wondered if this game actually had the capacity to support forest fires.
  4. Spawned in the endless ocean of suckage. Player Name: Shad ID: 18332550 Equipment: I dunno, but I did have nearly every piece of survival gear, including GPS. I just want to be thrown back on the mainland, even without a weapon. I'll make it work somehow! Oh yeah, I had an ALICE backpack, too.
  5. YES But only if we spawn with a melee weapon of some kind. Or, you get 1 random (low-powered) weapon with 1 magzine.
  6. Thanks for your eloquent contribution to this thread.
  7. Sorry, I know this isn't supposed to be a suggestions thread, but I just want to stop all the killing going on out there. People who kill others ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES. We need to do something that will affect them based on their actions. Idea: Players with LOW humanity start psychologically suffering after killing too many people and require medicine to prevent a mental breakdown (blurry vision, shaking, hearing things that aren't there, etc). If they kill X number of players in Y amount of time, they suffer from this psychopathy. They must have the medicine to cure it or it will persist. Conversely, make it so that players with HIGH humanity regenerate Blood at a VERY slow rate. Maybe +100 per hour. It's a small bonus, but a bonus none-the-less and an incentive NOT to become a dick. These won't spoil the appearance and tension of meeting another player in the wild, but will affect the decisions each player makes out in the world.
  8. NO I think you will need more incentive/consequences to prevent people from murdering preemptively to protect themselves.
  9. When near a bad player, your character reacts like it does in panic mode (short gasps). Call it subconscious tension if you will.

    Incentives to Cooperative Play

That made me lol so hard. I think this image depicts the opinions of many in Day Z.
  11. Well, that's it. I've been playing for over a week now as a cautious but non-hostile player. Starting today, I'm done with that mess. I have spared so many, only to be shot in the face by those I've spared. It will happen no more. This game has no incentive what-so-ever to spare another player's life, so why bother fighting it, right? Tonight, the old merciful me is dead. He's been replaced by a murderous pillager who isn't going to spare anyone unfortunate enough to fall within my kill range. Thanks Day Z, I needed to get in touch with my inner asshat.
  12. Sigh...this happens to me ALL the time. I got shot in the back when checking my gear once and the dude just walked right over me and kept on going. What was the point of that!?
  13. I think in a scenario like that in Day Z, a person would be at least SLIGHTLY concerned with the survival of the human race as a whole. Killing off everything non-zombie you come across is just ridiculous. It's been proven time and time again throughout history that people tend to naturally form groups and attempt to cooperate to build societies. Yes, they do go to war with each other. But this is usually different GROUPS of people. In reality, there are MANY more benefits to cooperation and partnering with other people that you just don't get in this game. To all these people saying; "Nah bro, in real life you wouldn't interact with NO ONE!". Are you serious? In the end-of-the-world scenario, you expect to survive all on your own, without another human's help indefinitely? Really!? You must've seen one-to-many Army of Darkness movies. Who would keep a look out when you sleep at night? What keeps a zed from gnawing off your foot when you take a leak? These are all things that cooperation would benefit IRL that just don't have a direct correlation in-game. My final thought: Do you think people would be so quick to kill another player if that person would NEVER come back...EVER!? I doubt it. If they did this, they would quickly live their dream of being the last man left on Earth. Then all they could look forward to is living alone and killing every zed left in the world. However, in Day Z you know that dude you just murdered will pop back up on a beach somewhere. No harm done to the survival of the human race....there's still plenty more of us, right? All those people bitchin' about realism and what-not need to understand that last part kind of breaks this "realistic immersion" they've got such a hard-on for.

    Incentives to Cooperative Play

How about you get a group of 2-3 and THEN approach random solo players? He's probably a lot more likely to take the olive branch if the alternative is a 3v1. Sounds great, but if you don't have any IRL friends playing, making "friends" in this game is very difficult. I have tried reaching out to 6+ people in the week I've been playing and guess what? I was shot by each and every one of them. If you can find an ally, that's fantastic. But for those like myself, this is a very difficult proposition. Also, half the things you list can probably be condensed into one line. Example: Epi-pen, Bandages, Bloodpacks, etc > Render First Aid. I appreciate you trying to counter all the "whiners" like myself out there, but your list looks like you intentionally broke it up to make it appear larger (and hence, showing more benefits of cooperation) than there really are in this game. TL;DR Teaming up is great. Getting a team of strangers to cooperate together without dying in the process is easier said than done.
  15. Two questions I haven't been able to find an answer to after searching: If I drop my backpack, how long will it stay there before it disappears? If I hit respawn (while still alive), do I still leave a corpse?

How long will my loot stay on the ground?

Thanks for that info. Your story gives me some hope. I've been playing for a week now and every time I've died has been to another player whom I've spooted first. BUT, I always try to communicate with them, and it ALWAYS ends up in me getting shot. I'm really shocked by how much PK there is in this game. People just don't seem to copperate at ALL, unless they know each other already. It makes this game really freakin' lonely. =\ Also, if the server restarts for any reason (i.e. Server is changing from Day/Night) any loot on the ground gets reset, right?

How long will my loot stay on the ground?

Maybe. But sometimes I had to decide on a M1911 or a Revolver and I want to give the other to my buddy, but I lack the space. If I dropped it someplace for him, I'm curious how long he has to reach my location before it despawns.
  18. I started playing Day Z a week ago and love the concept of the game, but I'm having a very frustrating time dealing with encounters of other players. I know what you're thinking "Duh, that's the POINT of this game". True, the unknown human element is indeed integral to the gameplay in Day Z, but I'm finding myself more frustrated with the limitations of this being a GAME vs being real life. My main issue is with communication. It's clunky, difficult, and unclear. I am not a bandit and I try playing this game how I see myself trying to survive in real life. I'm cautious and defensive, but almost every time I've been killed, it was by another survivor who I was trying to communicate with before taking the shot on them. In real life, it would not be too difficult to communicate my intent, but in Day Z it is very cumbersome and confusing. Many times, people don't even realize you're trying to talk to them at all. I think there are some things the game can do to overcome some of the valleys that separate this game from real life. We need some way of communicating quickly and effectively with other survivors that doesn't involve the clumsy chat and avoids any ambiguity or confusion. My suggestion would be to borrow a page from Counter Strike's quick-radio commands. A survivor could simply push a key (lets assume it's f1) then a list of "shouts" would be shown. 1) Hey There! 2) Back Off! 3) Anyone Here? 4) I need help! 5) Identify Yourself! Are you Friendly or Hostile? 6) I'm friendly. 7) I'm going to kill you! 8) Don't move or I'll shoot! 9) Need help? Once you press the number to shout that dialogue, it would be received by any players within the Direct Chat distance and it would come over as part of the game's audio. Meaning that, if you ever hear the words "Don't move or I'll shoot!", then you know someone within 50m is probably targeting you and is offering you one chance to respond appropriately, instead of just capping you in the head. A feature like this could reduce the number of player-kill deaths in Day Z by allowing people to quickly and easily communicate without having to completely expose themselves or drop their guard. Remember that communication is integral for any society to establish and thrive, and this element is sincerely needed in a game like Day Z.

    P2P Communication Improvement Suggestions

I would imagine that simple gestures could also be done like this, or in a cobination with the shouts. It would be nice to do a quick handwave from a crouched position. Or a hands up stance when you know your back is against the wall (metaphorically speaking). Simple gestures and phrases like these are all it takes to start connecting with other survivors and to see them less as walking loot caches and other human beings.
  20. I'm also surprised with the lack of incentive to work together. After playing this game for a week, I can't think of a single reason NOT to shoot another survivor on-site, unless you need them to administer a blood pack to you. Seriously, can anyone give me 1 realistic (in-game) reason NOT to shoot someone? Because for a week now I have had the upper hand in every scenario in which I died. Every time I die it's because I don't shoot the survivor I got the drop on and I try to communicate with them instead. Of course, they then just pop me in the head. It's incredibly frustrating, because other than my IRL morals, I have absolutely NO REASON not to shoot the next survivor I see instantly. I kind of agree with the OP. Perhaps we need to use the Karma (humanity) thing so that the more people you kill, the more zombies spawn in the area adjacent to you, or they take more damage (if and when) they do take a bite/shot. ANYTHING to make this game less of a PK spree and more of a real-life survival situation (where numbers = strength and security) would be an improvement. Also, I made a suggestion on how quick and effective communications can be made to another player, without putting yourself at an incredible disadvantage. I think it could really help to diffuse some of those unnecessarily tense encounters. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=10036
