The firemen armed themselves as they probably didn't know it only takes 1 hit with a firefighter axe to kill a zed.

Do you know how to become stronger and faster? Try Rasputin Kvass! Not only it tastes great, it also looks cool! And it will make you look cool, too! Drink Rasputin Kvass. There is nothing like it in Chernarus!

I am a complete coward in this game
ep_metheus replied to PinguAlmighty's topic in New Player Discussion
DayZ means different things to different players. Some play it for the thrill of a fight. Some to troll others or to handcuff a player and feed them dubious items from their inventory. To me DayZ is about survival. I've always thought that survival would be the main goal in any kind of post-apocalyptic scenario and that's how I approach playing DayZ. I never ask to be killed when I respawn in an inconvenient area. I never give up on a character and commit suicide when my character is in a bad shape. I do my best to survive. If your goal is the same then it only makes sense to avoid armed confrontation. As long as you do it in an honorable way (no combat logging) there is nothing wrong with it. -
Beans for this part.

Having played the Mod for over a year before Standalone was released I can't help but think that there was more cooperation among the players in the mod compared to SA. Maybe it was because most people had their "home" server where they had a base, or even just a tent or two somewhere in the woods, so they had a reason to play on that server time and again instead of starting each session in a new territory. Inevitably they ran into the same names and got to know each other. The side chat was a great help in this. There wasn't much else to do while you ran miles through the woods other than talk to other people who were doing the same thing. You could get the general impression of someone before actually meeting them in the game. And one day, when either you or them got into trouble came the moment when that sentence appeared in side: "Hey dude, could you help me out?" Next thing I know I'm driving to help out a guy I've never met in the game before wondering if it's just an elaborate trap and whether or not I end up losing my wheels and some gear. Usually it worked out and the survivor was friendly - just as he seemed on side chat. I do miss the side chat sometimes, but hopefully the walkie-talkies will be good enough a substitute that will encourage players to form new friendships with strangers. Right now it seems half of the people in the game shoot on sight because they want to kill you and the rest shoot on sight because they don't want to get shot first. Anyway, we all have a long way to go until Alpha is finished. If you ever get bored and wonder what to do in the game, here are a few ideas. Enjoy and don't take it (too) seriously!

I really enjoy these picture stories of yours. Beans!

As they say: If you can't fix it with duct tape, you're not using enough duct tape. Beans for suggesting this to be a part of the game. :) I'm trying to imagine what a shirt covered with 1 full roll of duct tape would look like. Probably more tape than shirt fabric there in the end.

Video Tutorials For New Players (Most recent episode - Improving PvP Defense - 1st Feb)
ep_metheus posted a topic in New Player Discussion
Hello survivors, To all of you who are new to the game I'd like to recommend a series of video guides I made. They deal with different aspects of the game, usually with what seems to give new players the most trouble. I've played the DayZ mod for over a year and the standalone version since it was first released. I don't claim to know everything, but I put a lot of effort into trying things out and do research. I enjoy making videos, so a large part of my time in the game I spend "shooting", but not using an M4 or a Mosin, but a recording software. So if you ever run into a guy who's for instance just staring at a shed (probably taking screenshots) or strips his clothes off and jumps off a pier (recording something) there's a good chance it's me. Many times I've died to get the stuff I needed for my videos testing things like how many punches it takes to kill a zombie or working on a video about "murdering ladders". Anyway, I might not be some notoriously known person on the forums, but I promise you: The stuff in the videos will help you get started with the game. If you have any feedback or want to ask a question please post in this thread. I will be happy to answer. I hope we can exchange survival stories by a campfire some day. Take care (and don't eat rotten fruit). Full playlist that includes previous episodes: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7soj6Jkp1jG07ub51l-nNMmBwaQPXWz8 Most recent video: -
Top 10 Things to do in DayZ (While we wait for more)
ep_metheus replied to ep_metheus's topic in Gallery
I know what you mean. I'm not a big fan of dressing up in military clothing. Wearing camo clothes, a ballistic helmet with a gas mask is becoming a bandit thing to do. Not because all who wear them are bandits, but when I get shot 9 times out of 10 the person (or people) who end me are wearing just those things. I think other players treat anyone in military attire with distrust at least, if not with outright hostility. Anyway, I decided to go for a less military look, sacrificing a few slots in the process, but I'm happy with the outcome. -

Haha, yes I know. Spinning the model seemed like more fun at that time. :D I have actually started reading War of the Worlds recently. I wonder if I can finish it before someone shoots me. Probably not. -

Guys, new episode is out - you can view it in the original post. -
What will make you play the alpha again?
ep_metheus replied to Igglas Cage's topic in General Discussion
I haven't stopped playing and I won't, but what I'm looking forward the most is - vehicles (hopefully a tricycle will be added - I can see my self wearing a mask and riding up to a player and saying in a creepy voice: "Do you want to play a game?") - living off the land (hunting & cooking food) - beards (the ability to grow a beard when you survive long enough) -
Or in a desperate situation - shooting a zombie or another player with it blinding them until the flare burns out. (Possibly causing some damage + damage to clothing etc.)

Can anyone clarify on these specific patch notes?
ep_metheus replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
My guess is as good as anyone's, but here goes: Art: Bug allowing... police station building is a new building currently only to be found in the new town Svetlojarsk. Previously players were able to walk through some of the geometry such as walls. This should be fixed in the patch. Animations: knocking... I'm guessing previously it wasn't possible to knock down/ knock out a player who was prone. Crafting: Damage... I think this means that when you previously spray painted a Damaged item you got a Pristine painted item out of it. Now the damage will transfer properly and you'll get a Damaged painted item. Effects: Dazed effect... Probably that when you take damage your screen becomes blurred temporarily or some similar effect that will affect your view. Graphics: "god rays"... Sounds like rays of sunlight shining through trees, etc caused some trouble,. it should be fixed in the patch. Graphics: Roads... No clue what this one means. Graphics: fix of removing... I think this means that when you had a shining object (a flashlight, etc) switched on and you put it away in your backpack it stayed on. After the patch was applied it will switch off automatically. -
1. Doors or Walls don't apply at the moment. Hopefully soon. On the other hand there's not that many zombies in the game at present, so you can think of it as a feature that makes them more of a threat. :) 2. No global chat. Only direct - both voice and typing. You can find a walkie-talkie in the game and set it to a specific frequency, then talk to people in the general area who have theirs set to the same frequency. Not sure if this works yet, I found a walkie-talkie, but it was in the previous version (yep, I'm still alive since then) and my walkie-talkie doesn't allow any interaction. 3. I find that experiencing the game yourself + having a look at the forum here and there when you get stuck makes for the most satisfying gameplay. There's a lot of advice on the forum and on YouTube, but if you figure things out for yourself it will feel like you've achieved something (the first time you figure out how to deal with zeds, where to find food/water, your first gun... etc.). Seeking advice too early will rob you of this experience. (Some) General rules for fresh spawns: 1. get off the coast 2. don't eat rotten fruit 3. don't approach groups of armed players 4. don't engage in mass free-for all fistfights that often happen at spawn points

An idea: A zombie that is handcuffed or has its hands tied with a rope behind its back won't be able to hit you. Now just put a burlap sack over its head (so it won't bite) and attach an improvised explosive to its back/head with duct tape. The zombie behaves as usual and chases players. You keep your aim at the explosive and shoot it at the right moment. New fun game to play in DayZ. Edit: Maybe not a burlap sack over the head so it can see other survivors. A few layers of duct tape over the mouth might do the trick. Also it would be fun to watch if another unsuspecting survivor shoots the zombie and thus detonates the explosive.

I shot a zombie through a wooden floor with cracks in it (that's how I knew where to shoot). Took two M4 bullets to take the zed out.
-
Morphine and even a splint will get rid of the moaning.
-
Don't give up Rick. This game is brutal when you play on your own. Trust me, I know. But if you keep searching, sooner or later you will find a player you can trust. Then you will realize that finding that survivor who will have your back no matter what was worth all the deaths that lead you to him.
-
If you die you respawn on the coast but your old character will turn into an AI zombie and roam the area where you died. Now if you want your gear back you first need to kill that ballistic helmet & body armor wearing brains gobbler! Hope that it won't figure out what the M4 in it's hands is for.

How could the stranded ship be converted into a base or trade-post
ep_metheus replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
Any solution how to prevent the players who want to come to the ship and trade from being butchered by groups of bandits? I'm thinking something like a boat operated by the group on the ship which would take the players to safety after they've finished their trading. But they could still be shot before they reach the ship.
