Well Phoboss, it was a good discussion. Enjoyed the soundboard without getting personal. For that you get my beans.

Are you new to Dayz? Because when the shoe is on the other foot..... it will suck. When they log back in to flank you ... sucks even more. And, no dewd I don't hate you, the OP might. Human nature dictates the easiest path.... We, OP, and I just want to play a different kind of game.

Its true that I don't know whether other players would like what I propose. I am suggesting that the server admins decide on what type of server they will run. Speaking for myself, I would join these servers. But, I agree that noobie players should look for free servers to get to know the lay of things and private Hive ultimately is the direction to go. I am not trying to detract from the timer solutions as they have their place, combat logging (your def.) is best dealt with a timer. Limited as is my understanding, I can't see timers being anything but universal across all public hive servers, where as gun control is server specific, in simple terms if you don't like that kinda of server....you like hopping... then don't play there.
-
1. you have a private hive server you first join server on beach you gather loot incl. a weapon you leave take a sh$t you come back to the server and still have your weapon 2. you have a private hive server you first join server on beach you gather loot incl. a weapon you leave take a sh$t you join another private hive server and you start on the beach again 3. you enter a public hive server with gun control you gather loot incl. a weapon you leave to eat dinner you come back to the same server (no character state change) and still have all your loot incl. weapon 4. you enter a public hive server with gun control you gather loot incl. a weapon you leave to eat dinner you enter another server with gun control (your new or you were here before but state has changed) and still have all your loot but not your guns, (perhaps melee weapons are allowed depends on server) 5. (Current way) you enter a public hive server you gather loot incl. a weapon you leave to eat dinner you enter another server and still have all your loot. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Private hives already eliminate the problem so there is no need to change anything about it. I am strictly thinking about how to make the most from a public hive and eliminate deadly hoppers.

The MOD has been around for sometime (years?) and these problem still persist. One of the servers I frequented had a logout timer ( I don't remember if they all did...so many builds). Another server you couldn't logout properly because of a glitch and had to alt+f4 in order to leave. But I believe that there will zones and timers. My checking weapons idea won't likely happen and if you hate hoppers you will have to go to private hive servers and stay there.
-
Well we have come to my point then. When one joins a private hive server not only do they "check their guns at the door" they check everything at the door, even position is reset. If you don't understand what it is I'm proposing, just think, gun=vehicle, and servers can turn this on or off, their preference. Other aspects of the public hive remain intact. Guns stay with the server. This marries you to it, but you can still have multiple 'wives' ;-) through stash tent vehicle network!

When I was playing the MOD, I had a network of stashes between servers. Sometimes I moved stuff between them. That makes 15 minutes timers between returning to servers eliminate that likelihood, which would suck especially if the admin turned out to be an ass or the server turned out to be flaky. I will admit that I missed that detail even though I did read your post a few times and agree that ghosting would be far more unlikely. Though it can still happen, as I have experienced snipers that sit too long, not impossible. If you were to move (when you move to a private hive) would your server allow new (to the server) players come in with a DMR (they would be well positioned too)? Or, would you see the merits of restricting the movement of the DMR into the server? Come on... come on..... I too would love to see this game get better. All else aside, this problem is well known by the developers and the players.....I 'm here thinking outside the box. Timers have and are used and they create and solve problems, so too would guns being specific to server control. Do you see any merits to my idea?. Everyone knows about timers already... is my idea so unoriginal that it isn't even worthy of thought or discussion? Can you poke holes in my solution? I see holes in the timer solution... namely that it doesn't adress some of the other problems that hopping creates, and I haven't totally disagreed with you. Perhaps my solution isn't as hot as I think it is....sort of like your timer solution.

Okay, now that you have just demonstrated why it sucked to fix up a chopper in the MOD just to have the admin ditch (which actually happened to me and this is going to be the same in SA by the way). You should be able to see why treating the firearms like vehicles, tents, stashes, etc would be okay even with the public HIVE structure. I am not advocating private hive if you noticed, just gun control. This could be done on server by server basis. My guess is that you love taking those guns to other servers, right? Well not being able to take your guns would be a better fix for those problems previously discussed. The timer will only work in some specific instances, not for others. For example, you are on Elektro's famous sniper hill taking shots at someone down in the city. I am on the other hill across from you, so my combat timer doesn't get turned on..... I ghost in behind you because it is only a minute wait with the timer.....BAM your dead. Okay Okay make the timer longer right? This kinda starts to get ridiculous, no? Leaving the server adding additional minutes would hamper this but would make the game painfully slow for new players when finding a good server, I believe that this is a poor solution, but I will conceed that it would slow things down. Once you have a server you like then my solution seems to be/apply better. Since the reasons for changing servers frequently are moot when considering vehicles, tents, stashes, etc. They keep you married to that server anyway.

Perhaps you can tell me why the public HIVE system is so wonderful?
-
I can still ghost (sorry hop) the same position through multiple servers... is my point. You are looking only at a small facet of the problem.
-
Although I agree that a 15s logout timer will help, It won't "bring it waaaaaaay down" and also, what is acceptable? I can still get server hop ghosted by some dink, in an area I scouted, and made sure was clean, and for the same reason, farming is still a major problem. Any idiot can get geared up with an M4 in a few hours then go "hunting" for bambi, which could be the server your on, total KOS and banditry comes from having no pain from dying and losing that easily acquired gear (made worse when people suicide until they get the spawn point they want to more easily retrieve their gear). People who play the game as intended are far more cautious than the majority of bandit A-hols running around Elektro (I've always wondered why they seem so suicidal). Have you ever noticed that DAYZ is the ONLY (unlike BF3/4) game that has hundreds of servers all with a small handful of people in them? Hmmmmm... farm on! All bandits go to high pop servers AFTER farming their equipment in low pop servers is my guess.

One either accepts those downsides or combat logging, ghosting, and farming, will always be a part of the game, your timer won't get rid of it. Note: vehicles have always been server dependent therefore advanced players will always return to that same server, so much for the public HIVE. With my solution, you can always leave your guns behind in a stash go to another server and get your other guns from the stash there. The stashes can be lined up on the map. And, I don't prevent the player from moving to other servers, just their guns.
-
The issue of finding the right server is rather moot when you consider vehicles, since they are tied to the server and you can't take them with you. You will keep returning to the same server. My humble advice is to find a good server early on and stick with it, some servers (at least in the MOD) have their own forums which can be useful for dealing with server related problems.
-
Ghosting, server hop farming, combat logging..... all due to the nature/design of public HIVE. If servers were to manage the guns like the vehicles in the MOD, server hop would end . Imagine coming back to the server you were just on after ghosting on another and you get a message, " Client state has changed since last known point! Do you want to check your Firearms at the Door? ". If I had a server and I could implement gun control, I would. No more hopping! Problem solved. Although problems created? Some clients don't like being tied to a server? I suggest multiple characters to allow people to use other servers instead of moving chararcter from server to server without penalty. Each chararter can have it own "home server". You could still hop but you won't have any guns when you do so.

Should be setup so every item has a weight and the more you carry the faster you tire. Perhaps the sprinting with 50 lbs on your back gets you worn out before you can out run those zombies! Better stop and shoot off some of those heavy bullets... lol.
