Why is pvp and gunfights so bad in stand alone?
hefeweizen replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Always thought the ARMA 2 gunplay was too close to Counter-Strike style laser beam rifles for my taste. I personally like not having to worry about being picked off from 1200m any time I'm running anywhere in the Standalone. The stock M4 needs some work, otherwise I think most of the other weapons are fine. -

Wait wait wait, you don't even own the damn Alpha? Jesus, and I wasted time conversing with you. Sorry bro, being all judgmental about a game you haven't even played is just stupid unless it is universally derided, which DayZ isn't. Streaming is spectation, not participation. It is especially a bad way to experience DayZ as much of the fun of DayZ depends on the creativity of the player, something Streamers on a whole are often times sorely lacking in. "Winning" at DayZ is boring as hell, and usually involves hours of prone camping, sneaking around and KoSing everyone you come in contact with. -

The Walking Dead had its highest ratings ever this year, hell the only episode that beat the finale in ratings was the premiere. This years finale had 3.2 million more people watching than last years. I think you've got a major case of confirmation bias going on. You want zombies to be "over", so you're looking anything that confirms that "fact" in your head. -
Why do people want to tell others how to play?
hefeweizen replied to AdmiralBull's topic in General Discussion
Because being bad at DayZ is like being bad at table top RPGs, you might hack and slash your way through the dungeon and technically "win". But everyone else who was trying to have a immersive experience still thinks you suck, because you acted completely out of character and did nothing but roll dice the entire time. People don't want to play with you anymore, so they ask to have the rules changed so you can't munchkin your way through the next campaign. -

The cyclical nature of pop culture has been redefined with the advent of the internet. Everything that was ever on the table, is currently on the table. Niche audiences of millions can connect together and drive the creation of media so that things that in the past would have fallen out of the public eye no longer loose relevance. DayZ, and zombies in general have way too passionate a fan base to simple "go away" for a decade at this point. Saying zombies are are a passing fad at this point is like saying superheroes are a passing fad, you might be right on some level but there are still 100k people who go to any given cities comic-con every year who will plunk down money for whatever marvel movie comes out. TL;DR Niche audiences drive media in the modern world, so your understanding of the nature of pop culture is out dated. -
If you could change one thing about SA right now....
hefeweizen replied to DMack's topic in General Discussion
Public hive. Get rid of it, or decimate the server population so that people stop gearing up on empty servers. -
[Petition] Password or Kick permissions for SA servers !

Agree so many times. There needs to be less server (and therefore less empty loot farms) and they need to be run by BI to get rid of admin abuse. -
Can Nothing be done about MetaGaming in Dayz?
hefeweizen replied to yorkmorgan's topic in General Discussion
From my experience, "being real" is just something douche bags say when they want to try to justify whatever sh**ty and tactless thing they just did/said. It's like saying "No offence but..." its cute that you think qualifying the sh**ty things you say will change how people perceive them, but that doesn't get you off the hook for being an assh***. -

I have heard one idea for making people value the life of their character that would actually make a difference. Beard/Hair growth for time survived. I know if I had a majestic flowing hobo mane that took 48 hours of in game time to max out, I would be a lot more careful. Even if people AFK'd to get all mountain man'd up, they'd still value that life all the more. Also, I dunno, maybe you could change tires, fix engines, bandage faster, find berries quicker, treat wounds more effectively or melee harder the more you did 'em. Anything that doesn't require direct input from the player (e.g. aiming, stealth, finding equipment, communication) outside of selecting it as an action could become slightly faster with repeated use. That in turn, could bring a rise of specializations, medics, mechanics, woodsmen, zombie killing berzerker viking axemen. That sorta thing. -

Well, there is already a list like that, it just isn't for VOIP services. But your point is valid. Though off topic, this conversation really make me want a survival/sandbox game where features like this are on the Steam main page so people couldn't get bent outta shape about them. A game that plainly and openly went the the extra mile to discourage meta-gaming and deliver a deeply immersive experience that fostered systems to encourage and reward play without the aid of Wiki's, tutorials, VOIP or message boards could be a big selling point to a lot of people. It's 2014 and every game has a meta-game and theorycrafters now, a game that went out of its way to "meta-hard" would be an interesting prospect. Sounds impossible, but damn it I'd chip in for that games kickstarter. -

Well, I assume a lot of that is because of the alpha nature of the game. Come release time, I would hope servers under a hundred people would have bandwidth to spare. -

hefeweizen replied to yorkmorgan's topic in General Discussion
Sorry man, but it wasn't really a definite answer as to why it shouldn't be talked about as a possibility. Sure, issues can/would definitely arise server side and from a QA perspective it might be a nightmare. But QA guys always say everything is a nightmare and won't work. Then the engineers do it anyway and QA guys have to make it work. Circle of life. Something more substantial as far as why it definitely couldn't be done, after bandwidth is optimized and the servers aren't so stressed, after loot spawns, after zombie/animal numbers go up to release levels, after all the sweet a** survival mechanics are working properly, after vehicles and base building are nearing completion. After all that, and assuming the bandwidth found to support everyone having their mic on constantly, (which I would hope would be possible, as everyone using their mics at the same time crashing a server would be a pretty terrible bug) what would be the negative effect on the game play be? I haven't really heard an compelling answer to why it would be a negative thing, just how people would go out of their way to get around it or how it would be a chore to implement. Both of which don't seem to out way the net benefit of such a change. -

Its not a broken alpha, it is a regular alpha. Learn the difference between Alpha and release. As for your second sentence, you have no clue what you're talking about and its obvious to anyone with a brain. Shut up and git smart before you think have the right to be cynical about things you have no understanding of. -

1. No, this is what we're talking about in this thread, quit being a douche. Yes, people will use 3rd party VOIP no matter what, the idea is to transmit over local chat anything that goes through the mic. Forcing always on. The dev in this thread said something about bandwidth, but it seemed like a fairly flimsy excuse. 2. No, this is what we're talking about in this thread, quit being a douche. You're wrong, people will still exploit gamma if it is adjustable in game. Might as well figure out a solution as early in the alpha as possible. Probably an options menu revamp with certain things restricted to title screen, or only taking effect after a fresh spawn. 3. No, this is what we're talking about in this thread, quit being a douche. See #2, but replace gamma with FoV. -

hefeweizen replied to yorkmorgan's topic in General Discussion
I don't disagree with you on the subject at hand, disabling 3rd part VOIP just isn't an option. But this logic is specious, at best. Just because a law doesn't stop a crime all together, doesn't mean it has no merit or shouldn't exist. Using the "perfect", to stop progress of what is merely "good" is how crooked politicians get stupid people to accept their sh**y lot in life. -

...and this game is in Alpha. They can fix those "quirks and glitches" and with continued support they can do their best to discourage any new ones that arise. That is part of being a high quality gaming studio. I played Chivalry: Medieval Warfare competitively and that entire damn game is about abusing glitches. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be a much, much better game if the glitches were fixed. It just means Torn Banner is too terrible of studio to come up with a solution, or too chicken sh** to fix the glitches in fear of angering the "hardcore" or as the rest of us like to call them "neckbeards". Good studios make changes to their game when meta-gaming becomes more important to victory than actual in game play. Also, ScruffyBandit is totally right about your warped sense of morality. By your logic baseball players who didn't dope before it was outlawed were the ones at blame for not leading the league in home runs. Its their fault they didn't use whatever means at their disposal, no matter how questionable the means were or how generally looked down upon it was. Someone who does whatever it takes to win might be good at competition itself, but that same person is not someone who you want coming up with the rules in the first place. Because hell, making the rules unfair is just good strategy, am I right? -
Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
hefeweizen replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
So there is an entire second team at BI specifically working on Zombie behavior. You know they're place holders yet you still come to the forums and bitch about them? I gotta ask, do you understand the concept of "place holder"? The zombies in the alpha are pretty much there so that there are zombies in the alpha. Not much other work has been done on them, what little has been done was the bare minimum in order to make zombies at least factor into the gameplay. If the second team introduces the completely reworked zombie behavior and zombies still act all super derpy then come back and be a little chode about it, until then go away. -

Failing to see the hypocrisy in Shaeg's statement. Are you feeling like people are picking a fight with stuff you say because you're conservative and its hypocritical to tell you to knock off the "damn liberals!" talk? I can assure you that everything I've said to you was because what you said was stupid, regardless of your political affiliation. 'Cause I was serious, I'm literally sorry you had to grow up in Texas. Just how terrible the water down there tastes alone is enough to drive most people crazy. And the "tell us another story grandpa" thing? That was about how stupid what you said was, that's not a conservative slam. There are lots of conservatives that don't make sweeping generalizations about large groups of people that sound like they're straight out of the 1950s.

Always one ass who wants to make everything about "them damn liberals in government" or "Those fascist corporate monsters". It's way easier than seeing people as people and judging each one on what they say or do. I mean, you can't get away with judging people based off race, gender or religion in polite company anyone and now people like you want to take this way from us? Quit trying to take away my freedumb!!
