That's all bullshit, and I question your credentials. "I am saying this from my industry experience at a major European game publisher." is the video game equivalent of a "girlfriend who lives in another city".For one thing, " By alpha stage all major game features should be implemented." is plainly false. So, I suspect that you're greatly overstating your case to have anything that could be considered an informed opinion on the subject.
-
I swear this is the number one reason people are assholes to those who are critical of the alpha. It isn't that they're being critical of something that pisses people off, its that they're raging douche nozzles while they do it.

Arma 2, Arma 3, DayZ. All the same engine, different forks. If you can't understand that, then it isn't surprising that you don't understand why they didn't use the Arma 3 engine for the DayZ SA.
-
A simple If>Then. If the options at hand are: A. "Find a day time server." or... B. "Depend on what is essentially landing lights for sniper bullets." Then the overwhelming majority of players are going to pick option A. Therefore as it is now night time gets no use, and development time is wasted on night time features that never get used.

How many folks went back to playing the Mod until SA goes to Beta?
hefeweizen replied to AdmiralBull's topic in General Discussion
Epoch is nice because some of the loot is specific to zombie corpses and you get a small humanity bump for killing each zed. I like a practical reason to clear zombies, its nice. -

Playing Epoch with friends until the Standalone is more fleshed out. I personally prefer the Standalone at the moment, but my group of friends are very stupid about the vehicles and zombies walking through walls so, here we are. -
People copying dayz are doing it wrong.

I'll try it again when the custom map is released for Breaking Point. But nah, I tried Thirsk. I don't think any of the Arma 3 maps are particularly good for DayZ, or in general. Altis might be more fun if I learned the whole map, but I shouldn't have to in order to have fun. Cherno and Taviana were both great fun for DayZ even when I had no idea where anything was, they're just better for this sort of game play. Since I'm on the subject again, another big disappointment I had about Breaking Point was the zombies. From the way people made it sound, I imagined Jesus, Einstein and Tesla all got together and divinely crafted the code for the holy Breaking Point zombies that would put both the Mod zombies and the Standalone zombies to shame. But they're just the mod zombies, except they don't run, so they're actually worse and less of a threat. They just shamble at you slowly and you can avoid them a easily at a brisk jog while coming within inches of them. Sure, they look nice and that is cool, but that's just frosting, there is really no practical difference between them and Arma 2 mod zombies that have had running disabled. Aside from a nice little walking animation. Overall, Breaking Point was a big disappointment. I really wanted to like it, and maybe too many people hyped it up way too much for me to give it a completely fair shake. But honestly I don't think its anything special, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone over the Arma 2 mod, or even the Standalone in its current alpha state. -

All of that is well and good. But it doesn't change how terribly boring Altis is. Breaking Point is bad through no fault of the mod makers, they did their best. But Altis just isn't the map for a DayZ clone, it is waaaaay too big and waaaaay too boring. I gave it a good week of my attention, playing on full 60 person servers, and I maybe saw two people. It is a real shame Zoombies mod had to shut down, DayZ using the Cherno map but running in Arma 3 sounds amazing. -
Many people seem to not actually know what "Alpha" means...

Yes. Many paid customers are idiots. If you don't understand why someone would avoid a bunch of whiny idiots on the internet, then I'm afraid you've got completely different ideas about what a software developers job actually is. -

Two things: 1. You're an idiot. 2. H1Z1 is going to be an arcade shit-fest. It'll be like a presentable version of WarZ, fine if you're a deathmatching goon, crap if you're looking for hardcore survival. Also, god Sony makes terrible games. Have you actually played Planetside 2, I never thought battles involving so many people could be so damn boring. -

God Altis is the most terrible map. I like the mod, but all the Arma 3 maps are terrible for DayZ. -

'Cause the official forums has more idiot mouth breathers that live to hate on games/movie/tv. Reddit has the added bonus of community moderation, if something is unpopular then you won't have it on the front page. Its nice, gives you a sense that the vast majority aren't as horribly annoying as the few idiots that yammer on and on about how much the game is gonna be terrible. However, on the official forums said idiots are on the top of the pile, constantly. Its a no brainer, would you want to deal mainly with idiots (the forums) or fans of your work (the sub-reddit). -
Ughh... I can hear your mouth breathing while I read your typing. Please admit that your don't have the faintest clue how video games are made and shut up man, you'll do everyone a favor. You're not smart, that much is obvious. It is a shame nobody ever taught you as much.

So how much of a thrill do you cheaters get when playing DayZ?
hefeweizen replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
Lol, I was born in '87 so naturally I think 'The Breakfast Club' sucks nuts. But even I knew what the hell the .gif was from. People not being able to identify famous movies is weird to me, its like not being able to identify a color or a number or a continent. There are certain things everyone should know, amirite? -
Well, at least you're getting creative with you KoSing OP. You're still shooting people all willy nilly, but at least you're using your head a little bit to make it a little easier. I guess that's a good thing. Off topic, If there is one thing missing from DayZ Epoch, it is traps. I hope the standalone ends up with a base building system that is a parred down version of Epoch's, Not really building free standing structures, but fortifying existing buildings. Epoch allows for such base building and it works quiet well actually and I think with the Standalone's map being filled with tons of enterable houses I think it'd be a perfectly viable alternative to excessive server clutter. However once someone would bust down your door they would have easy access to all your junk. I'd like the standalone to have booby traps available to catch people who get over confident after their successful break in. I just had an idea for a zombie movie starring an adult Macaulay Culkin using makeshift traps to defend his pre-apocalypse home. Shit'd go straight to DVD, but I'd totally watch it on Netflix.

I haven't seen very many South American servers at all, honestly. I think I've seen a few Brazilian servers, but little else. I guess your best best would be servers in LA? However, I've always felt like DayZ is a lot more forgiving of a game pingwise than more twitch oriented shooters. I'm in Seattle, Wa, USA, and I've played on many UK servers with little problems, aside from more Russians. Did that just take a turn for the racist? I'm sorry everybody, I'll see myself out.

When was the last time someone nuked an entire Standalone server all at once? Never? Okay, then quityerbitchin'. -
Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?
hefeweizen replied to SomeCallMeNomad (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Wrong again. The version used at the beginning of development of DayZ was the one used for "Take on Helicopters". It has since been changed so much that it is safe to call it the DayZ Engine now. The Arma 3 version of BIS's engine wasn't even close to completion when development of DayZ started and if they waited they for it to be finished not only would they be another six months behind they'd also have to spend a ton of time removing additions to the engine that were Arma 3 specific, but wouldn't fit in a game like DayZ. With the knowledge of how long the network architecture (Which is completely new, and entirely unique to DayZ, mind you) would take to create before even the most basic Alpha would see the light of day, the team made the right choice to start work on DayZ when they did, with the engine they had at the time. -
The only person more annoying than "Complains about complaining guy" is "argues semantics guy".

DayZ SA's current state in a nutshell.
hefeweizen replied to nurdseprem's topic in General Discussion
So you're saying.... they saw a market for a standalone game based off a mod of a property they already owned and they decided to make such a game because it was sure to sell well? Those bastards! What are they, some sort of business? -
Glad you enjoyed your experience. DayZ is amazing when you are first getting started and have no idea where everything is and what it does. When Arma 2: Combined Operations goes on sale you'd be doing yourself a favor by picking it up, the mod is a great way to get an idea of where the standalone is going to end up. Both the vanilla mod and the more popular DayZ Epoch have their own charm. Private hives do away with things like server hopping, ghosting and for the most part combat logging. Plus, vehicles/persistent storage really flesh the game out nicely in a way that hasn't been achieved in the alpha yet. Once the Standalone is closer to completion it'll surely be hard to compete with as for as zombie survival goes, but at the moment it sounds like you'd really enjoy the mod.

Is the DayZ mod still heavily populated? Steam has a great sale on Arma 2 so i was wondering.
hefeweizen replied to wmike20052's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The Commander is fine, millions of people have used it and there is no malware. It might set off ZoneAlarm, if you use such nonsense but it is nothing malicious. Super easy to use, couldn't play the mod without it. -
What dayz could have been without zombies
hefeweizen replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
People would grow food. What do you think they did before the advent of modern technology? Its not like humanity would magically forget about agriculture in less than a generation and as long as the cities are still around they'll always be more than enough shelter for the remaining 1%. Seriously, Cherno is a lush green temperate forest right on a coast line. There is no easier place to survive in the world. If 99% of the population died off there would be more than enough animals to sustain that amount of people indefinitely, even if they hunted and fished night and day. There is no way to make living off the land in Cherno so difficult that people would resort to barbarism without being totally unrealistic about a persons survival capabilities or drastically changing the map. Like I said in the beginning, your idea is nice sorta, but DayZ and Cherno are most definitely not the game or map for it. Cherno is obviously a place where living off the land would be easy were if not for the zombie apocalypse, as evident by the vast swaths of farm country and orchards. The map also doesn't show any signs of being more than a couple years since the apocalypse, the roads especially, the buildings as well. You could completely redo the map to have a much more inhospitable environment, you could get rid of all the zombies and most of the animals, you could make loot almost nonexistent and starvation almost instantaneous as an attempt to make just running around and not fighting anything difficult, but at some point its just not DayZ anymore. A huge amount of people bought this game because they wanted a standalone version of the DayZ Mod, to get rid of something so core to DayZ would not only be monumentally stupid from marketing standpoint, it'd downright disrespectful to all the fans who supported the DayZ mod. -
What dayz could have been without zombies
hefeweizen replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
Peoples true humanity coming out would involve going about their day the best they could and trying to find more people when they realize everyone who lives near them is dead. Roaming psycopaths make sense when long term survival depends on efficiently killing monsters with the face of people. Imagine 28 Days Later except, instead of becoming zombies everyone just died. Where is the conflict? So you stay in London, shack up in your apartment and eat cold stuff out of cans for a few years. Without a constant threat there'd be no reason to heavily fortify and thus dick's like Christopher Eccelston wouldn't become powerful. People would just muck about the best they could and in a few hundred years we'd be right back to where we started. Its called a plague, it happens a lot in human history. -
What I predict DayZ will achieve by the end of the year.
hefeweizen replied to TheWizard14's topic in General Discussion
That is honestly what you expect, when we've had much more than that in less than five months? You're just purposely being an entitled sounding ass, dude.
