Sneaking / Visiblilty concept: I totally get that, including the subtle differences between walking close to a wall, into a field, and onto a road at the various postures of the body. I almost never sprint, and most of the time I crouch-jog or crouch-slowwalk (0 ears and 1 eye on soft grass). My video settings are fine (and yeah, 100% 3D res is a must - too bad my frame rates are only around 30-40 fps on a good server, and 10-15 on a crappy one... I only have a radeon 5850, but a 6950 is in the mail, 15% more raw GPU power ftw). I've been playing DayZ for a few weeks now, and even though Arma is pretty clunky in terms of playability, movements and aiming, I've played worse (Söldner: Secret Wars anyone?) I realize you guys aren't fighting much different from me, so I suppose even more patience and aggro avoidance is key. It's going to be harder with zombie spawns inside buildings coming back in 1.7.1 ... I mean, in that case you MUST fight to get the loot, or never loot at all. Pretty rough for a person with no (DayZ-) friends. Fortunately, I enjoy losing (as in, meaningful deaths). I was just wondering why the only building I can reliably loot are Deer Stands, because they never have more than 4 zombies and they don't breed/respawn like rabbits, either.

Buildings make the killing easier, but if I kill zombies in a building (even a free standing barn), they never stop respawning, so I have a steady stream of zeds until I run out of ammo. As for sneaking, I almost exclusively crouch-walk or crawl around prone in cities. Even in 3rd person, zombies spawn right on top of me so every now and then, I get aggro (or I can't go into the town at all because it's gridlocked with perfectly staggered zombie patrols)

And your meter only goes down if you climb up the cliffs near Elektro, find a sniper, and SUPRISE BUTTSECKS?

Rocket, please re-enable Side Chat and do this instead
thygrrr replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Actually, I'd like Direct Comms to be the default chat, sometimes I log into a server and it's still on Group chat when I need to say something in a hurry. -
Rocket handled it all pretty professionally, IMHO the admins responsible for the rollback overreacted and did a lot of stuff really badly. I shudder thinking about that "Security Notice ... annnn they trollllinnnn" post. That was awful and completely uninformative. Obviously that post's author is not very fit for public communication in serious situations, unable to realize that the vast majority of users had no idea what he was talking about (he was referencing a pre-rollback announcement). Rest of story is "oh well, shit happens, thank god for salted hashes".

Rotoscoping is a very oldschool method of mocap, though it's more of an image digitizing method (digitizing the silhouette of an object, not the 3D positions of the joints)

ArmA2 / DayZ LagMeter - Countermeasure against those lags (for Serveradmins only)
thygrrr replied to caspar's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
How does this even work? Can you elaborate? -
Seems like an Arma 2 problem, are there as many hackers in Arma 2 as well? Or have we and Arma 2 just now reached critical douchebag mass with DayZ ...
-
Respawn like a mofo until I roll a good kit. I stead, make everyone spawn with 1 mag, no morphine, 1 bandage, no food, no water. And no backpack.

My stupidest death was crawling around on some rocks in a ghillie suit I had just found, with a winchester that would not have been good for sniping anyway. Feeling all snipery and stuff (I hate snipers and don't even remotely have the necessary patience). Needless to say, the glitchy rocks first broke my legs and then my spine. That's what I get for playing sniper.

Server Hopping Solution - Items don't save on player until X minutes after found
thygrrr replied to DadisAjax's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I have a better, even simpler (i.e. programmer's) solution that doesn't restrict the non-hopping players: Save any picked up items along with the server on which they were found (e.g. save pairs of data, timestamp + sourceserver) ... then, upon logging into a new server, if currenttime - timestamp > X or currentserver == sourceserver, spawn item in inventory, else discard item (or maybe reserve it on the server the player comes back to, unless overwritten (check space requirements, discard excess based on timestamp)). That's like 20 lines of python code if you do it right. It could curb server hopping a lot, I'm sure. -
I recently right-clicked on a can of beans to eat it, and it had pasta on the inside. Now seriously, the server naming discussion should move forward to much more optimized (and correct!) server names.
-
Grabbed? As in, picked up by a player?
-
Temporary outage. www.arma2.com was down earlier today, as well.
-
Now before people say again that it can't be done... It can be done. It has been done. Even in multi player.
-
Thanks, I just knew it could be done. You're my hero now. (both of you :))
-
Completely unplayable, indeed. :-/ Why is the stuff being sent to the hive server synchronous? Just fire and forget, let the master server sort it out on its own.

ARMA 2 regulars and people who got it for DayZ
thygrrr replied to eddie820's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Never played ArmA 2 ever. Only with the DayZ mod. I might get into ArmA seeing what a stupid console gamer fest all the other war game shooter series have become. I like simulations, especially tank and flight sims. -
At 1600m view distance, that means if you are on an elevated position, with a field of view of 90°, you'd be seeing about 25 players or at least overlooking an area where statistically, 25 players are hiding. It'd feel crowded.

Suggestions that I feel promotes and balances co-op/pvp
thygrrr replied to popmelt's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
But in 28 Days Later, the zombies ARE infected...?! Runner zombies are much cooler. Except I wouldn't want them to be zig-zagging, and laggy, and clipping through glitchy buildings. -
All my loot is in my tent.

Vehicles explode when players join the vehicle
thygrrr replied to Tomi1702 (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I for one like our new booby trapped vehicle overlords. -
That's crystal meth high, not weed high.

The map is 225 square kilometers, i.e. 15 km long and 15 km wide. 10 miles by 10 miles for you 'mericans. 225x225 km would be 50,625 square kilometers instead.
