What do you want on a DayZ server?

Realistic-ish in terms of loot. Meaning that soda cans and canned food are usually pretty common, but guns and ammo are rare and should indicate that a player with a gun has done a fair share of looting before actually finding it. I hate when it's so damn easy to find a gun, that everyone is running around, PvP ready after only being on the server for like 10 mins. Surefire way to get your server classified as a Free-for-All or Deathmatch instead of a survival game. Some people love that shit, but those servers are a dime a dozen. And also, spawn in with minimum gear. What's the point of exploring and looking for shit and getting that fuzzy feeling inside when you find a Lee Enfield or AK, when you already spawn in with a damn M4 w/ 3 mags, 1911 w/ 3 mags, a bloodbag, morphine, hunting knife, map, GPS, compass and 3 or 4 bandages? I immediately scratch those kinds of servers from my list regardless if the community is great or not, big time gaming turn off. You should spawn with, at max, a patrol pack, a tazer to atleast aid in avoiding zombies until you do find a gun, a flashlight, a bandage and a map to atleast get your bearings. Oh, and more buildings obviously. And actually have night time. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass to play at night, but really adds to the immersion and changes your approach and play style once night hits. Now, while I say that, I hate really long nights. So I don't know, 3 hour days and 1 hour nights? I think adding in AI is cool too, but that's my opinion. Some people don't like it, but it will atleast keep players on their toes when they are playing at nights or when not a lot of players are on. Anyway, I'm sure there are more, but those are big points for me and if I found a server like that, I would definitely add it to my favorites and probably make it my default server. And yeah, after reading all that you can clearly see I am looking for a hardcore server. But like I said, the extra loot, 24/7 daytime, spawn in fully geared servers are a dime a dozen. No thanks.

    Lone wolf tips?

Killing everyone in sight is not a good way to let someone know you are not to be fucked with. All it's going to do is get more people angry with you and more likely to team up against you and then troll you once they do kill you. There is no way to gain enough reputation so that other players avoid you or don't fuck with you. They will just spawn and eventually work their way back to where you killed them and more times than not when a bandit kills someone, they don't leave the area. And eventually that bambi who you just killed like 3 times in a row with your DMR when he only had a Makarov or nothing at all, is going to catch you off guard and kill you and take your shit. And it's funny as hell when it happens. Moral of the story, you are not invincible, regardless of how many players you killed. Your time will come. Now I am not talking down on people who shoot and kill everyone they see, but it is satisfying as fuck when I see or read that some new player just killed the dickhead who has been camping Elektro for hours and killing everyone. Because nothing puts a wad in a veteran player's underwear more than to be killed and looted by some FNG. And as far as deceiving people, only people that fall for the, "I'm friendly, let me put some cokes in your pack", are brand new, first day players and people with no common sense.
  3. Like I said before, and you can get pissy, heated and out-debate me all you want, I don't care. I don't need to win a debate with anyone. I'm just simply throwing my 2 cents in as far as what I believe the Devs want. And that is, Devs want a larger player base, whether you think they cater to hardcore players more or not, the fact is, as developers, they want to get the most out of the game they are putting out so there won't be any "1st person or GTFO". 3rd person will be in SA just as 1st person will be and the bulk of players will be using 3rd person again for obvious reasons and in a few months down the road, this thread or a new one will pop up and people will be bitching and whining about one or the other again. Face the facts or not, there are/will be more casual players than hardcore players and 9 times out of 10, they will be using 3rd person. It's not going anywhere. And no, I'm really not taking up for one over the other, as I use both in different situations. But this thread has been pretty one-sided, in favor of 1st person and I feel that's because the majority of the players on here are veterans, hardcore players and people who are rather skilled at the game. But, there are still a shitload of people that play this game, that aren't registered on these forums or won't be, in fact, ever.

    Lone wolf tips?

If you spot another player first, bandit skin or not, never expose yourself to them to ask them if they are friendly. If they have a bandit skin, I would say don't even waste your time asking if they are friendly because it's probably a stupid question. But regardless, never expose yourself. Voice through direct communication and let that player know that you see them and you have them in your sights. Then you can ask if they are friendly and decide your next actions because they won't know exactly where you are. You can ask that the player drop their gun too, but I doubt it will work. Most players will tell you to piss off if you tell them to drop their gun. But honestly, like everyone else said, you can't trust anyone in this game. Atleast not 99% of players anyway. If you do find someone friendly and willing to actually tag along and/or help you without shooting you in the back of the head, consider yourself lucky. Majority of players get a chubby when they kill you, regardless if you even posed a threat or not. It's even worse so on servers with death messages enabled because then everyone can see who they killed and with what weapon and distance. Off topic, death messages are dumb in my opinion. I don't have a problem if it just says who the victim is, and the weapon used, but it seems too much like a, "Hey, look at me, I just killed this new guy! Now everyone can see what a epic player I am!" kind of deal. A lame way to flash your virtual penis around for pointlessly killing another player.
  5. Hey, I've tried a few different servers, some Vanilla, some Origins and some Overwatch. The only servers I've come across are the ones where you start off gear and weapon heavy, i.e Largest pack, military grade weapons and enough shit to last you a few in game days, as long as you don't get killed by bandits and then servers where you start barebones, which I prefer, but the loot table it so high that I find like 3 guns in the first building I go into. Are there any servers that spawn you in barebones or atleast the minimum, i.e. Patrol pack, One bandage, possibly a hatchet or tazer and that's it? Also, I don't know if this is possible so if it's not, just correct me without jumping down my throat, but are there servers where food and drinks are more abundant than say, weapons and ammo? Realistically, it seems that atleast for awhile, canned food and drinks and shit wouldn't be too hard to find, but weapons and ammo would be rare. Idk, just seems I get one or the other. Way too many items, guns and ammo or I get the exact opposite where it takes me hours to find a can of beans and a gun and when I do, there is never any ammo. Oh, and if such a server exists, does it have a steady player base?
  6. I use the 3rd person exploits simply because I know the majority of players use it aswell and I will be damned if I am going to make a game that's already tough to survive in, even harder for myself just for a little more immersion. With that said, anytime I am taking shots, I go into 1st person for the superior accuracy. Removing 3rd person as a whole, especially for the SA would definitely decrease the overall playerbase. Now whether you consider that a good thing or a bad thing is your opinion. Fact is, there are more casual players than hardcore players and 3rd person caters to the casuals. The only way I see it pleasing both parties is having 3rd person enabled servers and seperate 1st person only servers. Like I said, taking 3rd person out of DayZ is going to decrease the playerbase and while that might be okay for you, it won't be okay for the devs who obviously want a larger playerbase. This is mainly talking about SA, but as far as the current mods go, there's not much you can do other than sacrifice some immersion for the 3rd person advantage.

    Water sources?

I don't stay alive long enough to have to worry about drinking my piss.

    Water sources?

Ok awesome, thanks for the tips. My follow up question to that would be, is the only way to start a fire with a pile of wood and a box of matches? Because matches seem to be pretty rare to me as I have only found one so far and it was in a bandit's pack that I just killed.
  9. If I can see the player is a bandit, I won't even try to communicate. They usually almost always have better gear and weapons than me, so I won't take one on straight up. You wouldn't believe how impatient a lot of bandits are though. I started playing yesterday and already my bandit kill count is in the double digits. Flanking works like a charm if they aren't skilled and usually I can hole up in a building and wait for them to give in and come rushing in and kill them. You may call that cheap or being a pussy, but uh, if you want to have a straight up firefight using your Makarov against a bandit who has a Lee Enfield, LMG or any other military grade weapons, then have fun respawning on the coast. Anyone else, I will give the benefit of the doubt as long as they don't seem too shady. I won't ever expose myself though, but I will communicate with them and see if they might be up for a trade or something.
