Ok. Something to get going with... Think of Resident Evil 5. I wouldn't play that in 1st person if given the option. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eHGY3ojrx8 There's a good example of 3rd person camera that's nice to play with, pretty much doesn't allow you to cheat keeping the intensity intact but still providing most of the aspects people are looking for when 3rd person. The camera is quite level with the players head, so no peeking over walls in electro. (You know you can only do this in Dayz if you stand upright right next to a wall) No cheating around corners since the camera pretty much stays behind your back so the toon is first around the corner and THEN the camera. Here, you would actually have the advantage IN 1ST PERSON. You automagically dont see a person creeping up behind your back either. And for the balance: Every little gain you get around corners etc is effectively negated by the fact that it only works in one direction. Here turning left leaves you at equal disatvantage because of your toon blocking the wiew. I'd have that exact camera in Dayz with no objections. (And there's even a few gameplay mechanics that i'd definitely consider borrowing over..) ;) That was the best i could come up with. You're surely smarter than me, aren't you? Now, make better suggestion! Let's get the devs some ideas of how we'd actually like to play this so nobody has to mope in the corner and point fingers.

I dont know why i even bother... This argument has been going on for the last two years already. In my opinion it is simply not the "right" way to be able to wallhack and see things without exposing yourself etc. and i do enjoy the 1st person servers out there for their fairness and intensity... Nevertheless, i cannot argue the fact that playing in 3rd person is just simply so much more enjoyable and convenient because of the clunkiness and limitations of 1st person. The reason is simply because playing in 3rd person as it stands now, and was in the mod, is much more "enjoyable". And i don't mean from the PVP point of view, even if the game was void of any pvp, people still would prefer the 3rd person in this game. Think about playing games like Crysis of Farcry in 3rd person? Never. Nobody would do that. That's the issue here. And i do hope the Devs (and some of you) understand this. In many other this type of games the 3rd person is simply the "option" you can go for but nobody really cares about it and here it is vice versa. So long story short... This argument is going to nowhere. We should put the energy towards: a.) Figuring out the exact problems of 1st person gameplay and find solutions to make it as appealing as 3rd person. The gunplay etc. is clearly more convenient in 1stp so all we need to do is find a way to make the everyday tasks, exploring etc. a better experience. b.) Figure out a way to keep the 3rd person but effectively restrict it's viability in "cheating" as in peek around corners, over the obstacles and behind your back etc. without any risk. Come up with a camera mechanics that limits its exploitability. I will put some time in this since i don't exatly like the idea of strictly divided playerbase and servers etc. I dont like the elitism and friction it brings. Now help me out here. Ideas. Let's make this a constructive thread instead of the endless flame wars shall we. :beans:

Hello there. Nice to see there are other people as well who like to dabble with sweetFX. I also thought Dayz could use some Sweetfxing for a subtle atmosphere boost and did myself a preset for testing purposes mostly. You spend long times playing dayz so i thought better to keep it subtle, and the fps already being what it is, it leaves a little headroom for anything fancy... Atleast on MY rig that is. =) Fps impact should be quite minimal for any decent GPU: My HD7870oc got minus 1-3fps on the main screen, minus 5ish during normal gameplay. Went for a bit more film-like toning, cooling the shadows and warming up the highlights while trying to get a somewhat grittier look with some subtle hdr-tweaks.. It also emphasizes the games AO effect a bit so you get more bang for those FPS sacrificed for it. :) Came out pretty decent for my tastes. It's probably gonna evolve somewhat down the road and i'd happily post any upgrades if people are interested. Check before / after at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5wsqlirhogztl9f/ozDIqMLf9m (Looks a lot better in actual game than in mainscreen but it was night out there..) Disclaimer: Use it at your own Discretion. I have no clue about what the VAC really thinks of this, other than the fact that somewhere i have read Steam representative stating that VAC bans known hacks/hacktools, not something like this. You can download the preset file from: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58331222/Dayz_SA_Intactus_v1.txt Happy hunting!

Thx for the beans Devil. I have the impression that there is gonna be some kind of weight system implemented. I'd be suprised if not cause it's really something that should affect players choices and gear and everything. The difference between lugging around 4kg assault rifle and 7kg gun, or 13kg LMG is a major one after a few days. Been there. =D Not even taking into accout that 7.62 ammo does weight pretty much double the 5.56.. =) That should provide some incentive to strive for more efficient setup with lighter modern rifle and ammo vs. old cumbersome boomstick of bigger caliber. I don't see that the gear (or anything in the game for that matter) has to be artificially "balanced" for any reason. I see the benefits of the more modern gear being the lesser weight, better maneuverability which translates faster aiming, reloading, lesser recoil and more fluid weapon handling in general etc. THAT should provide the incentive to go for something better or then, be like me and love the Enfield. In the mod there's only a select few guns (DMR, FAL or M24) i take over my trusty Enfield and i love it. THAT imho provides the setting where skill is the deciding factor, not the gear. I feel safe enough when i know that whatever i hit with my trusty rifle, stops shooting back. If i miss my first shot, then i deserve to die. =) Love the severity.

Simply... No. IMHO the nerfing they did with the mod was certainly wrong. (If there are) Any military medics reading this i think that they'd agree. Rifle calibers will fuck you up hard. Period. Torso hit from any large caliber round should end the fight right there, for example Mosin 7.62x53 is a definite death penalty unless you get shot next to a field hospital. No way a person is gonna take another step after that, or return accurate fire etc. No. Anything above 7.62... Even less so. 5.56mm is very, VERY humane round. That and the light weight (troops able to carry more ammo) are main reasons it has become so popular but never the less it is still lethal, not just as devastatingly brutal as 7.62. There's a little difference in number but a big difference in the kinetic force and the injuries inflicted. During officer training they pretty much went in detail with this stuff, actual cases and lots of gory pictures etc. and that's some scary shit i tell you. Really puts the things you see in movies to a perspective. And to the op, feeling no need to look for a "better" weapon than the mosin... That is totally correct. A mosin is as good as weapon as any. It still kills you very much the same as the latest Hi-Tech bells and whistles spec-ops shit. The difference is in usability, accuracy and other aspects. I will continue carrying high calibers for that simple reason that if i need to engage another player, a one solid hit is all i need. If i need 5 bullets to disable my target, the gun is useless for the task. What's the take on this in general, good people? i'd be happy to know. Do you want to fire one good hit and be done with it or do you wanna dance around endlessly pumping round after round to a guy who then simply returns fire after your well thought ambush and a clean hit? Ps. I'd love the option that you dont instantly die, but just recveive shit ton of critical injuries and pass out and THEN die in the next few minutes if left without profound medical attention. (As long as you go ground and are out of the fight when hit.) edit: Grammar

UFGatorsDM got it right. Aiming with both eyes open is always the preferred method in the field and that's what you are taught in the army etc. It is kinda tradeoff between better view through the sights and peripheral vision. (You really want to see what is going on around you and your target) Also, as stated closing one eye really stresses the shit out of your eyes, especially in low light conditions. It is hard to focus at first and and shooting past 100m really ties your brain to a knot but you get used to it. And ofc this is a bit different from competitive shooting, sharpshooting etc. where you don't have to worry about someone jumping up from the bush and putting you full of holes. In the game, while wielding an assault rifle it pretty much represents aiming with both eyes, since if you'd be doing it with only one eye, the rear sight would pretty much fill your whole screen. Now you can actually see around the rifle a bit, althou a lot better than irl. =)

Hello everyone! I'll start off by saying that regardless of the game's very, very early alpha status, it's amazing. The implemented mechanics and amount of potential it has are just overwhelming. Keep that up and you'll have the most amazing, immersing title in a decade. My... appeal for the community as a whole. People who come here and complain about the mod having this and that mechanic or just compare the "visible" exterior mechanics simply don't have a clue and i'm sad for them. Just give it time. This engine already has an impressive set of means for making an unique and wonderful gameplay. Ofcourse there's a ton of flaws and limitations and things i'd like to change myself but it would be pointless to bicker about those at this stage of development and most of those already have had a debate going on for a year atleast so... The antihack, combat timer etc. will be there i'm sure, as well as something to prevent ghosting, exploiting etc. So no need to endlessly scream about it, is there? I believe we as a community would do well to try keep these forums as constructive as possible if we really want our voices to be heard. No dev is gonna waste three days going through hundreds of pages of endless rants and flames about the obvious in hopes to catch that single constructive post with a great idea in it! There are indeed many here, lost among the pointless bickering. People posting about "how serious disappointment this is" are systematically either too ignorant, clueless or just simply unable to properly understand just what are they evaluating in the first place. Take a deep breath and consider if you actually have any relevant feedback or realistic solutions for those issues. If you don't, just don't post. If you aren't even trying to solve the problem, you are part of it. As stated a few times: Pre-Alpha(er). You got what you paid for. Regarding the weapon accuracy... There's really a huge debate about weapons. I'm all for realistic approach myself and having an excessive firearms training, having served in army as a platoon commander/drill instructor i certainly have my own view about how guns should work and what people should be able to accomplish with and without proper training/knowledge/excersize. My suggestion for the middleground is this: Introduce condition to the weapon itself. Make it play a big role: Bad condition gun/mags results in bad, unpredictable behaviour (bad accuracy, weapon jams, unintentional firing, feeding issues, etc.) Pristine weapon is accurate and reliable. Make weapons/materiel degrade over time/conditions and maintainable. No gun, especially western made complicated assault rifle, is able to fuction properly while running around, engaging enemies, crawling in forests etc. without proper maintenance. It should be an effort to keep ones weapon in good condition/prevent degrading. A normal soldier spends almost as much time/effort maintaining combat equipment as maintaining oneself in those conditions. Make bad quality equipment the stardard. Make ways to maintain or even slightly improve the materiel condition. A reliable, accurate rifle of any kind should be a really rare, prized possession be it mosin or whatever else. Hell, make it so that most weapons you find are pretty much useless until proper measures have been taken to restore functionality, much like vehicles in the mod. When you (after firing lots of rounds) leave the gun laying in the autumn woods, it sure as shit isn't going to work properly after a few weeks, let alone longer time. Other than the weapon condition, performance should be purely about skill/knowledge instead of some random dice roll. This would be completely doable with the excisting mechanics already implemented in the game. =) Oh... Such a huge post. I guess i got carried away a bit... None the less... Do not just complain people! Suggest, give ideas and solutions if you have issues! That way you can sill rant all you want but might actually contribute something while doing so! See you out there.

A word for the community and a big hand for Rocket!
Intactus replied to Intactus's topic in General Discussion
I think that the realistic, extensive, well thought gunplay elements are/have been the second biggest "selling point" for the dayz right after the unique interactions with enemies and other people in the game so imho it should really be emphasized in the Standalone even further. It even contributes directly to the scavenger/survival aspects of the gameplay while presenting the player with tough choices with their limited inventory capacity. It makes it more difficult for one just to grab a gun and start killing players on sight. It makes hoarding huge amounts of weapons less desirable as they need proper maintenance or be reduced to garbage after extended amounts of time etc. I think that when proper balance is figured out, this would become a pretty good element affecting the gameplay and our choices. What say you? -
No, and i didn't mean to upset. I just meant that the whole point of the thread was to make surviving worthwile by adding a system that rewards extended lifetime and makes it more bitter to start over so that the way we appreciate our lives would atleast come within a mile of the way we cherish our gear etc. Having that kind of "specialization" available from the start gets us to nowhere.
-
Maybe i was wrong to quote that it would decrease the the precentage of the KOS. It prob. wouldn't do that. Instead it would definitely lessen the bodycount, the no-contact PvP'ing since most likely if you can see your enemy, your enemy can see you as it is in real life and if they won't, then they got no one to blame but themselves. =)

Not to beat a dead horse but removing the 3rd would really solve more than one issue easily as that... Simply this. I think that the 3rd person is really not suited for a game like this. It's borderline wallhack as far as i'm concerned. Having 3rd person also takes away a massive part of the atmosphere and enables people with zero skill, tactical ability or situational awareness to survive fights almost as easily as the most systematic, tactical veteran out there. You really cannot deploy effective area denial or force the enemy down and move while he can't see etc... 3rd person takes away so many tactical choices that i can't believe it still exists in a game like this. Try a server with 1st person only and you'll be amazed of how ignorant most of the people can be. It's beautiful.

- Go read the original post a few more times. Imho the beauty of this system is that the casual killer/player doesn't even have to care about this and they can still casually kill and grief and do whatever just as effectively but the players that really care for their performance, value those days survived and like to organize and conduct according to their standards, it gives another layer of depth in the game. It's brilliant.

This! All my beans for the OP. I sincerely think that's the best suggestion on the forums right now. Anything that adds more flesh to this game in such a balanced and discrete way is an idea of pure gold says i. People really should have a reason to give a shit if their toon dies. Atleast people who play that way to begin with. We'll always have them "torpedoes" who don't give two shits about anything and just rush in head first but nevermind, you got those people in real life as well. Go find your nearest crack-addict and see for yourself. This is the dumbest idea on the forums right now. Having a special skill from the start that makes shit easier and you even get to choose what it it? HAH! :D Never. Give the OP a thought or two. This is great approach to make people have some benefits for playing smart and surviving.

Night time In Dayz SA and your thoughts?
Intactus replied to BlackDalia's topic in General Discussion
Dunno Dirk, i've spent many a night in the woods/wilderness at autumn time and it really is like that. In the open areas or near cities or other civilization it's another thing but take a trek 100km from nearest lightsource in the woods and you'll see it. (Not see it imean) The point is: Even in the darkest hour in DayZ, the night really isn't as dark as in real life, so imho complaining about the darkness is just ignorant gutless whining. And i'm sure that any of those few here who might have actually conducted any military activity or otherwise purposefully operated in real darkness, not even mentioning a firefight, would attest to the fact that the night time in the game is not anywhere near as crippling and hard as it would be in real life. Ofcourse, everybody has, and have every right to have an opinion or view what's enjoyable in a videogame and how far should we chace the realism. Personally, i love it. -
Night time In Dayz SA and your thoughts?
Intactus replied to BlackDalia's topic in General Discussion
Hello everyone. It's nice to see that there actually exists people who don't hate the night time. 98% of people usually just flee when it turns into night on any server... Such a waste of potential says i. Nothing more thrilling than wild nighttime firefights. (Which are even more awesome once you get to see those as a bystander.) I live in Finland, Northern Europe next to Russian border and i assure you, nights are a complete pitch black utter darkness without any external lightsources. In here, we have darkness atleast 15 hours a day at wintertime, almost as much in autumns and ofc summertime when sun hardly sets at all and it's never dark. Darkness in game is actually a lot less dark than it is here, for apparent reasons. Irl you simply cannot run through forest at night cause you don't see even your own hand in front of your face. For instance any military activity at night time (even just setting up normal camp and appropriate security measures etc.) requires excessive preparations, planning, drills etc. carried out before the sunset so troops are able to function at all during night time. (Been there, done that.) - Must sound weird to most of you huh... The night really makes EVERYTHING hard, slow and confusing, just as it does in the game. In my opinion, it's not just an aestethic thing to have a night, it's something that really affects every aspect of your conduct, performance and possibilities just as it does in real life. In my opinion, it's beautifully implemented mechanic. Personally i love the nighttime, mostly for the fact that it brings a whole new level of atmosphere and excitement to this game, but also offers a better camouflage than any ghillie there is. People should really use more of the flashlights and chemlights and flares (i know theyr're not yet in SA) and other tools that we are given. 9/10 It's the movement that gives you away at nighttime, not the light. ;) And this is probably well known for all the Mod veterans out there, but for the occasional newbie hating the nighttime: The most essential part of enjoying the nighttime is to set HDR at it's maximum value during nighttime. ("Low" setting on the SA) Otherwise the game wont render the shading properly and the night become intolerable black and white mess. See you out there. 2nd Lt Out. -
Since we all like watching other people play videogames, i wanted to figure out how to record/make a video... Now i don't know jack shit about making videos so i started with something short just to figure it all out, proper settings, a decent workflow, test some shit etc and came up with a half assed prologue for the actual footage of me blasting my way through Balota full of people. =D Never intended to publish this one but what the hell... Waste 2 minutes watching:
