I love a good helicopter crash.
StrangeOrange replied to xoiio's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think I have to mirror TheWizard14's original sentiment, although not as strongly. To explain what he meant, I should say that the OP is running a DayZ Epoch server but didn't mention that he was doing so, which was a bit confusing. However the real part of his statement is that there are people who have played other DayZ mods but not the vanilla DayZ experience itself so they are missing out on some of the references to original DayZ, or the content. To be clear, OP, the muzzle flash appears on ALL crashed helicopters in vanilla DayZ (though I didn't know they appeared on any in Epoch). So your post to someone who has played vanilla DayZ may appear silly, that's all. -
What is up with the loot spawns at the phone-poles?
StrangeOrange replied to DayzForumer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What I've started doing sometimes is just going down the power lines and picking up as much as I can, sans scrap metal. Then I find strategic places in the road and put a roadblock there. Wire fence in the middle with a tank trap on either end. I've had people complain about hitting "random crap in the road that shouldn't be there". Passive anti-armor banditry is what I call it. CX -
is melee combat completely ducked now
StrangeOrange replied to 782B's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Definitely not just him. The zombies have been buffed to the point where they can hit you IMMEDIATELY after they stop moving, and their range actually extends beyond some melee weapons. If fighting a zombie head-on with a hatchet, you will suffer some hits while you hit them, but don't even try the machete. Unless you are able to sneak up on a zombie (highly unlikely given their inconsistent alertness), the machete has been made obsolete, worthless, and broken. I used to be able to kill zeds out in the open with skillful machete usage (which was somewhat of an achievement given that it was still harder than using a hatchet before), but now I have to go into a building or a pine tree every single time. Here, I made a thread about it back when it was first an issue. Check it out to see others' opinions on it (though I wouldn't suggest posting there as you'd likely necro the thread): http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/148196-18-makes-melee-nearly-pointless/#entry1472819 EDIT: Lol just figured out you quoted my thread above. :P -
Admin Abuse and How to stop it.
StrangeOrange replied to TheShine299's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've seen a lot of posts in this thread proposing ideas that are outlandishly ridiculous, but this one just blows the rest out of the water. Don't have admins? Seriously? That is the equivalent of saying "there are crooked cops. Therefore we should have no police force". Ok, have fun playing with all the hackers then. You know, the guys that commit admin abuse without being admins. To be fair, I may be slightly biased in my opinion because I myself am an admin. However, I am a responsible admin. I turn off all tools while I am playing the game as a regular player. However, I will occasionally sit somewhere far away from other players and spectate them to make sure they are abiding by the rules. Most of the time everyone is playing legit but I have caught a few rule-breakers here and there. I have even spotted people walking right past my base and done nothing about it because I only knew it due to admin abilities. The community I am involved with has a hierarchy of administrators that are accountable for everything we do. Rarely, we have had a few player complaints in the past and accountability has been enforced. At the end of the day, however, all players are appreciative of our efforts and our server remains free from major hacking and cheating that you see on other servers. The point is that you just need to find a good server to play on. If you trust the clan/community and they prove to you that they are responsible with administration then they deserve a higher player count and you will benefit from this as well for not having to play with hackers. However, if you find a server where the admins are teleporting to you and nuking you and whatnot, you need to leave so that their playercount suffers and they eventually shut down. That is just how Darwinism works in a server setting. -
Is this normal play time for dayz?
StrangeOrange replied to meat pie's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I have a full time job and play usually about 1 hour/day for 3 of my work days, 2-3 h/d for the other 2 of my work days, and 6-10 h/d on my days off. So an average of about 1 full day per week. -
Helicopter stolen again... le sigh....
StrangeOrange replied to JPWiser's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Vehicles should stay how they are in DayZ Vanilla. If you want vehicles with keys, go buy one from a trader in DayZ Epoch. Seriously, you can do that- go check it out. -
You know you play DayZ too much...
StrangeOrange replied to Tabris07's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'd like to add another: When you walk around in your house or outside in the dark because flashlights attract too much attention, and your gamma is probably all the way up. -

StrangeOrange replied to Tabris07's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That is the first quintuple-post I have ever seen in my life! :O Now to be on-topic: I live in Dayton, OH and I think "wow my city would make a great DayZ map. There's a rather large train complex, a large air force base, several municipal airports, a couple hospitals, open fields with barns, and neighborhoods with residential loot spawns." Does anyone else ever think not only of how their city could be a DayZ map, but also of where specific major loot locations would be? -
People! Tiny mistakes can mean the difference between life and death!
StrangeOrange replied to bfisher's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is why I always hide zombie bodies if I'm in a place where there might be others, and I always pick up empty tin/soda cans after eating/drinking. Wonderful story, OP. :) -

And here we see just how mature you are. You respond to a legitimate post by calling its author "ignorant" and a "troll" just to diminish the point they are making, without even really saying anything. Well allow me to put personal matters aside for a moment and just look at facts (facts that have already been stated in this thread): Helicopters are impossible to hide from hackers just like everything else, but also incredibly difficult to hide from players who use legitimate methods to look for helicopters. This includes using multiple people to check a larger area (canvassing), using another helicopter to search for yours due to how trees and other obstructions render at further distances and certain angles, and checking areas where choppers are more likely to be based on others already putting their vehicles there. I think I should add that you STILL have not told us where you had put the chopper so we could tell you whether it was a good place or not. I'm thinking that you probably put it on the edge of the map in the woods thinking it was a spectacular hiding place and NO ONE would ever find it. If you did that, then just know that that is a terrible place to put it. In fact, just about any place is a terrible place to put it due to the fact that players roam through many areas of the map all the time, either because it is along the path between two points of interest, or because it is far away from those as to be an expected place to not be found (ironic, I know). So basically what I'm trying to say is if you lost your chopper, You can come to the forums to complain about it, but when people try to give you legitimate tips and constructive criticism you shouldn't deny any of their help at all like a child would because your pride is hurt. Also, if you really want help you'll tell us where you put it, but I would understand if you didn't want to do that for secrecy reasons (even though we don't know what server you play on). Oh well, just my two cents. >using "le" in title >calling someone who disagrees with them "ignorant" and a "troll" >posting a video from The Chive >said video contains the "trololo" meme > :emptycan: -

ITT: "I am convinced that I am so incredibly intelligent and clever that I can hide a helicopter and it is not possible that it will be taken. Absolutely impossible! Therefore, if it is not here later it was DEFINITELY a hacker, and I shall be prompted to make a post about it on the forums and subsequent replies yelling at people who provide me legitimate responses regarding several ways it could have been probably found by legitimate methods." -
I admin on US264. We are totally vanilla except that we have a debug. However, the debug only shows blood, humanity, and FPS. Except for that, everything else is normal. Normal loot spawns and amounts, starting gear, heli crashes, buildings, vehicles, etc. Keep in mind that if you haven't been playing for a while, 1.8 is a bit different, mainly in the fact that loot spawns in new places (outside buildings, in busy roads, on dams, etc) and seems to be more abundant. Best "default" DayZ 1.8 server?
StrangeOrange replied to grimsonfart's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
We as a community have had discussions about possibly removing nametags. There is no verdict right now on whether we would remove them but I believe it is the opinion of some higher-ups that they do not belong. Only time will tell. -
People that leave vehicles behind
StrangeOrange replied to TrickyBot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honestly, the only thing I can think of is hackers, unrealistically benevolent players, or people who REALLY REALLY REALLY had to go RIGHT THEN (for whatever reason). That being said, I have a couple vehicles that I've kept hidden for quite a while. You just have to know good placement and travel habits, that's all. -
Best "default" DayZ 1.8 server?
StrangeOrange replied to grimsonfart's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I play on US 264, which is hosted in Chicago (it says Dallas in the title- ignore that). Players all over the US report good ping. :) -
I just eat whatever I have, but my favorite foods are cooked mutton and cans of pork. With drinks I prefer Pepsi over Coke but I'm currently planning a stash full of Dr. Wasteland. ;)

Nearly. I'm just going to cut to the chase here- because zombies now do not have to stop before switching from their run to attack animation, they can hit you as soon as they come into range. While this makes sense in a way, it seems that the range of melee weapons has either not been increased to match this new difficulty or some other factor is hindering the use of melee weapons. Now I want to make it clear that I'm speaking about the machete only, since that's the only weapon I've tested this with so far. But it used to be that I could backpedal, wait for the zombie to approach me, and then in the very small time window between his stopping and attacking, I could hit him and either hurt him, miss, or kill him. Now, it appears that the zombies have massively quickened attack times and probably even a longer range as well. This totally breaks melee because now a zombie can not only attack me before I can attack him, but has better range altogether. There is little point to melee. Here is the crux of the issue for those who do not wish to read a wall of text: Zombies have quicker attack times and will almost instantly hit you when you are within their range, and their range seems to be larger than your melee range. I'm not asking that machetes make you invincible and unhittable, but I expect two things: Your range with a machete should be longer than that of a zombie's, allowing you to attack first; and that you should at least be able to reasonably defend yourself and not get hit at all with the machete or any other melee weapon if you have been diligent and patient enough to learn its nuances and how to use it masterfully. At this current point in time you cannot use a melee weapon AT ALL without being hit. In other words, if you try to melee, you WILL BE HIT. The extreme drop in infection rates is just a consolation at this point. I hope they fix this in a soon-upcoming hotfix/patch because right now melee is an untenable combat style completely. What do you all think?

1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I have ~35ms latency and my latency is consistent with how it was in 1.7.7.1 and this issue has NEVER happened before. -
1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I can also tell you that at some points I have hit a zed once, killed them in one hit, THEN had them hit me, then had them play the death animation and fall over dead. It's ridiculous. Eeeeeeeeeeeeexactly. I don't necessarily agree that the zed range has been increased. I think it's just the machete and possibly other melee weapons' ranges that have been decreased. The reason that zeds couldn't hit you before was that they would have to stop to hit you, and by the time you had stopped you had kept moving slowly backwards again. The classic "Achilles and the Tortoise" paradox put in a practical and rather nonparadoxical light. -
1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ok I'm being totally serious here and not trying to troll/offend you: Have you ever used the machete before? The machete was honestly somewhat OP versus zeds in 1.7.7.1, but since they made it so your range is shorter than a Zed's and they can attack instantly after walking up to you they hit you more times than you hit them. Even indoors. Attacking a zombie outside has NEVER been an exercise in randomness. They could always get a few hits in if your technique was a bit off, but for someone like me who has mastered the art of machete-jutsu (not trying to brag, at least not that much), you could use your skill to basically never get hit by a zed. At all. But now, you have no choice in melee but to be hit. You aren't given a choice and skill does not effect it whatsoever- and that is broken as hell and needs to be fixed. -
1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm sorry for how I worded a previous post where I said "unless you have a reaction time lower than your ping". I wasn't trying to say that ping is a part of it- I was merely trying to say that you had to be so fast as to be not possible for a human to do. Basically, if you melee fight with a machete INSIDE A BUILDING now, you still have a great chance to get hit. It's terrible. Literally ALL they would have to do to fix this is increase the range on the machete and then we'll be fine again. My arms + machete should not be shorter than a zombie's arms. I'm not a little person (i.e. a dwarf). -
1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Should be but it isn't. A zombie will attack you before you are able to hit them with the machete. This even happens indoors if you don't have a reaction time lower than your ping. -
1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
StrangeOrange replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This USED to work in 1.7.7.1 but does not anymore because of the reasons I stated. I just shouldn't have to exploit trees to fight outside like I used to. -
Has he only been playing on that server for a total of 10 hours today, or all-time? When someone joins the server it will automatically set their score to how many zombies they have killed in their current life. That is actually what Gametracker tracks- the amount of zombies killed in the current life. When someone died, their all-time stats remain the same but their current stats are reset to 0.

Tents disappearing upon death? First of all, what would be the logical reason for that, I mean in a real-world sense. I know the game has a lot of things that don't work like they do in the real world, but wouldn't you expect tents to just stay where they are if their owners die? If tents disappear upon death that would make them absolutely useless. Who ever sets down a tent with the intent to only come back to it during that life? I mean if you make this argument for tents you might as well make the same argument for vehicles. After all, people will just get vehicles and hoard them, and everyone knows that vehicles are just tents on wheels (or with rotor blades). Are you tired of people repairing and hoarding vehicles? Then just make it so the vehicle blows up if the person dies. Anyways, what this all boils down to is the disapproval you have of the hoarding playstyle. But it's the same with people disapproving of banditry (even frivolous bandit purely for the sake of killing). It's just something that is allowed because of the very open allotment of playstyles and the sandbox genre, and it's something you're going to have to deal with. If someone wants to hoard then you let them hoard. I play as a trader on my local server (DayZ Vanilla, not Origins or whatever mods have those stupid frilly "trading posts") and hoarding is merely just part of the job. That being said, there are still considerable risks. Someone can find your tent and loot it, someone can find your tent and camp it, waiting for you to get back, someone can find the tent and wait for you to put something more valuable in it and store that, people can destroy your tent and all your items, etc. These risks prompt action and strategic thinking on the part of the person setting up the tent that separates those that deserve the tent from those that don't. It prompts one to intelligently consider good tent placement, be alert and vigilant when traveling to or accessing the tent, and always have a contingency plan in case the tent is compromised. There's more to think of here than you think. That being said, having houses or whatever where you can just store all your items and lock them away so that no one else can get them is just lame. Super, super lame. EDIT: Also, I say NO to a tent limit. I deserve to set up every single tent that I find, and there is no reason I should be limited to only setting up a certain amount of tents. The only thing that should limit tents is the number of good hiding places, not some arbitrary rule on tents because some people don't like hoarders.
