Sorry, am I missing some obvious correlation between nigh time and people "hacking" (serious question :) )? Because as far as I can see this is a complaint about some questionable behavior and hacking in general, which just happened to happen during the night?

Beards and shaving cuts :)

The misunderstood barricade, the limits of them
hoik replied to Trizzo's topic in General Discussion
@ Judopunch: hmm not sure how that would work - seems a bit over complicated just to stop people returning to their body... for me its not a major issue if a player wants to spawn-run back to their body/stash, if that's how they want to play DayZ its fine, has no impact on how I play the game. You can't stop people from using knowledge they have gathered about the world from one "life" to the next... OP makes some good points about barricades - I think that many of us come at this from a gaming perspective (magical chests), which I agree doesn't make much sense in DayZ :) . If you think about the most basic barricading on a house: locks, ply-board on windows, barbed wire - this stuff only slows a person down. IMO it is from this perspective that barricading should be considered, not complete impenetrability! From this perspective (barricading as a delaying mechanic) you can approach barricading in this way: - All barricading objects have a durability - Durability degrades over time - Durability can be degraded at different rates by different weapons/tools - barricades can be maintained, requiring constant care and resources This ^ is all pretty straight forward, but where it can be used more interestingly is in regards to server hopping into the building (or as the OP put it, "being ransacked from the inside out"). - allow people to server hop into a "barricade" zone (god knows if this type of zoning can be done, but for now lets assume) - give them a timed spawn penalty based on the combined durability of the barricaded area. This is to simulate the time it would take to break into the building. - make it so that it always takes less time (if you have the right tools) to break into the area in game than server hopping For me this is completely logical and legitimate way to integrate (which is the important bit) players ability to server hop into buildings into the game, without using "magic chests" or letting players exploit/meta game the mechanic. What do you think? Also: - it would be neat to see some physics based "soft" barricading, like pushing furniture in front of a door/window - Take on Mars has some very nice physics based object manipulation/ basebuilding, would like to see this come across to DayZ. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SPtIRy9fXRM#t=48 -
I do want to try out the sporter, but for now it is the Sawed-off shotgun. It doesn't take up much room in your inventory (and can fit in a rider jacket) so you can keep a relatively low key appearance by only having a melee weapon on your back. This game is after all based a lot on appearance and assumption. For example, I've seen videos of fully kitted out guys at the coast killing other fully kitted out guys on the coast because these others "are obvious bandits out to kill noobs" when all they saw was this guy enter a house and loot it... its all assumption, which is actually just a mask to justify peoples actions. This is just one example, people make up excuses for their actions all the time in DayZ (Though many simply don't give a fu*& :) )... so lately I am trying to remain as unassuming as possible... while trying to maintain a lethal edge. Which means no weapons on your back.. It has kind of worked so far. I was still at the coast and had finally got warm and fed when this other fresh looking character appeared. I waved at him he waved at me, then he ran up to me and started talking in broken english: i asked if he wanted food - then 'pop' a cattle prod appeared in his hand and he commenced whaling on me :( . So I saw his cattle prod and raised him my sawed-off - that mother f*&^% got trumped :) . Soooooo satisfying...

That is correct ^ lol. Finally made it down the south west, it's lovely down there... My sawed-off Mosin - gone now :(. I made it camo so I could hide it in my backpack and no one would be the wiser...
-
hahahaha yea ^

YEEESSS - this has crossed my mind several times (and funnily enough I'm sure I've seen this suggested before :P ), or duel wield them...

I tried to do a good deed. Exp players are just as unfriendly.

lol, that sucks :( . -
How does everyone here break up the DayZ monotony?
hoik replied to karlkurtz32's topic in General Discussion
I am a bit of a DayZ tourist - I photograph everything! I sincerely hope they add in game cameras (instant ones and film, I don't think there would be much point in digital) I would love to leave photographs between the pages of books! Also, I really want to start a library - write up flyers requesting players to bring books to you for a reward (Things like complete gas cookers :) ). You would tier the rewards by the quality of the book of course! Personally I don't mind wondering the bush, if I get tired I simply take a break and do something else... -
^ you need to use authorized hosting sites - I use tinypic Whaaa... ...aaat? I have never seen loot spawn in here before, I thought it never did. I guess someone could have put it there...

I think this is acknowledged in the latest status report: "Finally, as mentioned on twitter, the team has identified a bug with the game server that we’ve noticed being exploited on stable branch. This bug is related to character/server initialization, and is a top priority issue for us." Not sure but I think this is in reference to this bug (I think :) )
-
Yeah, that's not bad frames in the city IMO :P. Personally I've tried most of the tips to boost performance to little effect, I don't think there is much to do but spend some cash now or wait and hope for some reasonable optimization... and then spend some cash :) .

Nice work with that shotgun :)

Well, he could have a "special" dayz account I suppose... in any case I don't think anyone on these forums really wants to help a player who has gotten banned from DayZ, we presume for ""hacking""... EDIT: of course I could be wrong... ^ *cringe* :( .

From what I took from you thread, you built an argument about your belief that dayZ is actually in a pseudo-beta state and by following that logic: "As it stands, the current Steam page is a lie: It states that DayZ is "in alpha" and that you shouldn't buy "unless you want to actively support the development of the game". Neither of these statements are true. As shown above, the devs (somehow) belive that DayZ is in BETA, and they do NOT want people actively supporting the devlopment of the game, short of giving them money. If the statements were true, we would have far fewer guns/shirts/hats and the initial stages of the vehicles available for play." And this is the crux of your argument - this i do not agree with. Up till this point I was could understand your logic, I think anyone can see that there is a slight blurring of priorities between what needs to be done to advance the game and what needs to be done to keep the angry, spitting maw of the masses pleased. I have also seen post suggesting that the team is too focused on the "alpha" build and should in fact try harder to "re-pioneer their pioneering approach to early access" (not my words) to incorporate more aspects of beta! So while I don't think some of the comments in this thread are helpful, I can completely sympathies with them. Sometime this shit just starts to get to you :( .

Nice ending lol, can't say you didn't have that coming :P .

IMO disease can replace a traditional perks system - resistances you acquire over your life time, by actually catching and surviving said disease, would be (logically) lost when you die. If disease is a significant enough barrier to certain areas, interactions or items, then they could be something very valuable. Therefore residences could = life value.

Well, you chose to make a post filled with some of the most common, most uninformed and least helpful sentiment on these forums... I know it's not nice to go throwing around accusations (trolling), especially at someone who (it appears) is new to the forum, so I apologise. I don't know you're motivation for making that post, and they may be your genuine views... I could go on to try and clarify them, but I think I've wasted enough of everyone's time...

Jesus f*&^ing christ, comments like that ^ are really starting to wear me down... trust me no one of influence will read your comment and even if they did they wouldn't take anything of value from it. Nice first post *cough* troll...

Seems there has been an influx of scripting, or at the least of people reporting it - maybe they had had a summer sale on cheats :( . Or a last hurrah before the wipe? If people paid for this shit and a significant code change could make it redundant (just guessing here, don't have a clue technically...), that could make sense?
-
Is this a riddle? Umm... Its a mountain? (Sorry, I know that isn't helpful :( ) Do you have duel monitors? Sometimes my mouse gets stuck on the other monitor and I have to give it a bit of a wiggle.

* IMO < this should be the default disclaimer on all posts... I have had some of my best experiences at night in the mod - I find it very hard to find a night server in SA. Yes it could take you two hours, or five minutes - what's your point? You might suffer some hardship in a survival game? Its clear you are most worried about balancing these mechanics,so please realise this is something that will take a while to happen. If you don't come to terms with this you are just going to get more and more jaded and disappointed when things aren't as you would wish straight away... and it might happen that what you wish and the direction the game takes are two different things...

Should all work/resources be dedicated to stopping the TP hack?
hoik replied to hothtimeblues's topic in General Discussion
Ah, its kind of nostalgic - I once got TP into the middle of the ocean in the mod, along with everyone else. We all swam back together, It was the most social interaction I ever had in the game... but yeah, not good :( . -
Of course it is assuming things will work correctly... to clarify I have played the experimental and for me it seemed to be working fine as a initial implementation. Unlike some, I think I have become a lot more jaded with this community than I have with the future development of DayZ. Regardless, I hope being cold does have logical adverse effects - how steady you hold a weapon, or you spill more food when opening a can when cold, etc. These are logical consequences and needed game mechanics so that there is a valuable reason to keep yourself in good condition, as well as for creating more interesting player interactions/scenarios. Balancing this is of course vital, but will not happen for quite a while yet. What is the problem with this? The game needs a lot more complexity. This weather system is the least radical system on the devs to do list, if the weather effecting you is too much for some I guess disease will be a very nasty combo... IMO this is good...

It all depends on what state your player is in - I spawned in and it was pouring down, but I had to find something to eat so I couldn't stay put. I had to run from house to tree to house looking for food, my need to eat drove me to risk the rain and cold - I ended up running to the next small town in the rain where I found something to eat and some warm cloths and a rain coat... and I was pretty much set. If you character is more "late game" you have no real excuse for avoiding going out in bad weather - besides bad luck (not finding the item you need, or it gets ruined by zombies or bullets), it is just laziness or stupidity to have gotten that far without giving any forethought to what you will do if it rains... Adapt and do what you have to to survive, pretty simple... if you decide that the best thing to do is wait out a storm inside, then do it. Or don't, its completely up to you.
