This would make for some interesting scenarios - and if DayZ is a 'End of Days' (like Cormack Mckarthy's 'the road') type of apocolypse this would be an inevitable outcome. There of course should be a flip side to eating people as there is already too much incentive to KoS without adding the possibility of making the player themselves a food source...IMO the concequences would have to be serious, and the decision weighed heavily against the players needs (eg your starving to death) - it would need to be more than something to LoLs over with your mates.

Learning by doing - the alternative to classes & professions
hoik replied to L0G!N (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Skills/Perks are definatly a value that can be given to players aside from the loot their carrying - very good to make people think before they shoot (maybe..) -
I have seen 'The Road' and want to get around to reading it, and I agree that it is an excelent window/filter to view dayZ through. I think there has to be a hell of alot more focus on survival aspects of the game as, really, the death/chaos aspect has been VERY well implemented and needs little else. If the human race behaved (blindly KoS) without any thought of survival there would be one inevitable end - I tried to make this a mechanic with my 'End game to ...' thread in my sig, it is a bit 'loose' but remove child killing and it might be a good idea :) . EDIT: Fixed the links in my sig. They should work now :)

We need things added that relate to roleplay, not killing.

If there were a LOT of modification items that are very specific in terms of how they can be combined would lead to a economy of sorts... a possible plus. -
New items, new item spawn ideas, and new item spawn areas.

All good ideas - all very well covered in other threads -

Crazy and wierd = out of your comfort zone maybe :-/ ? The reason I floated theis idea is BECAUSE it could take this game to another level beyond all the standard (and now stale) ideas/threads that are being thrown up again and again (I mean the ones that have already reached thier zenith/conclusion IMO, but keep getting re-posted by those new to the forum). Anyway whats so wierd about excessive/thoughtless PvP = the death of the server/human kind? Its quite logical in my eyes... I think a more open mind in topics like this ('wierd' ones) is whats needed. This is theoretical, most unlikely to get seen by a developer (like most the stuff here), so just use your imagination - this could be fun! If its the mechanics I propose that you dont like, come up with an alternative - if its the overall concept then tell me its WRONG, but then please explain why. :P . Just as a side note: Just remember that being a 'child' is based on players average life expectancy - ATM the global average is 38mins, so if you were spawned as a child you would only have to be one for 2hrs 32mins before you garaduated to adulthood!
-
Sorry but it is overkill (IMO) as nicely thought out as it is. I agree that locks, keys, traps etc (as mentioned by mahoney) are a much nicer, more thematically pleasing solution to this problem rather than 'turrets'.

Make killing an option... allow us to knock out fellow survivors :)
hoik replied to jippyuk's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is basically a forced 'surrender' mechanic - so I like it from that point of view, but I would also like to see a surrender mechanic that player could toggle on themselves if they find themselves in a hopeless situation - improving communication. I mean getting close enough to knock someone out without them trying to fire on you wouldn't be so easy (which is cool, makes it a challenge) and might be more effective for lone-wolf style play - while ambushing a player from the scrub and shouting at them to go into surrender mode lets the ambusher give the 'ambushed' a chance to surrender from relative safety - if they dont enter the surrender animation they take their lives in their own hands...the ability to 'knockout' a player would also be very handy in making your escape after you have forced a surrender! -

Depends on the definition what is high quality. If everyone is friendly and just shitting in the woods we all will have the chance to finde rocket launchers' date=' but no one will find food and drink? So we all die by starvation because we are to mercifull. What about the essentials u need to survive, like a hatchet or a box of matches? Are they high or low quality? Aren't bandages important enough to drop when i can have a javelin in case that no one shoot each other? So why do you need the javelin then? [/quote'] Well I define high quality loot as military style weapons NVGs GPS etc. Food as you say are 'essentials' but in my given example they would be lumped in with 'low quality' loot. I guess what I mean to say is if its the NAMING of the variables in the example is what disuades you from this idea, replace them with something else (eg: rare quality loot) - Its was just a way to show you how this system could work. -
They already exist. I saw a zombie stop following me and chase after/eat a bunny rabbit. I damn near cried it was so beautiful. hahaha that really is beautiful.
-
Like your general direction with this suggestion - the right tone of atmosphere could add alot to the horror aspect of the game. What about moments of unexpected beauty? Maybe some subltle yet haunting music as you watch the sun rise - like some forgetten memory of how things were. This would give me chills I gaurentee you. There was a post about fog - it had a awsome vid with the land covered in a thick blanket of eery fog it was f'ing awsome. You should do a search for it.

Hey zmazly (and others), I had a think of how to implement a family like structure into the game and came up with this: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=28359 It might go a little far - but I think you might like it (or not, either way let me know :) )

'From my cold...dead...hands...' (rule based choices)
hoik replied to hoik's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Yeah fair enough, it is a bit like that - I came up with this idea to satiate people who kept telling me that I wasn't 'facing the problem' of PvP - That is that no matter the incentive mindless PvP will happen. Thats why the idea is rule based and lets the player know there are very clear and direct concequences to their actions - I think the choices are still there, but it is more finely controlled - which I am actually GLAD to see people dislike. Thats not to say I don't think the idea has merrit, IMO it does :P . @ KnT47r " Not so keen on this one. The troll in me would just sit and wait for the person to come grab his death-gripped stuff and I'd kill him again...and again...and again...etc " My thoughts were that the 'death grip' items are just out right irretrevable from the corpse by ANYONE including the killed persons next reincarnation, but I didn't make it clear. So camping a corpse (even though it would still be good stratergy for trolling in general) wouldn't be of much use to troll the same person again and again. @ edonovan "Too complicated and still doesn't solve the PvP issue. The majority of murderer's are not killing for gear." I can agree its complicated (though not excessively). What is the 'issue' with PvP? Bordom? Fear? Paranioa? IMO opinion the biggest issue is communication. Have a look at this thread on communication = "humanity" by Scerun is very good: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=14619 I have come to the conclusion that the PvP chaos going on in DayZ at the moment is actually a very good reflection of a society suddenly stripped of law (I base my view on the movie 'the road', I highly recomend it as reference/guide on how to view DayZ in its present state) For me not PKing in DayZ is my own personal badge of honour - as I've said in other threads: "Personally I like to think that there is already a 'humanity' system in the game (not the silly heart beat) and the fact is that the vast majority is succumbing to the pressures of a lawless society and therefore becoming lawless themselves. Being a 'good guy' has basicly no value in a DayZ scenario, its only value is to like minded individuals - these are rare ATM and therefore of a very high value (to eachother). If you resolve to be 'good' you have chosen high humanity - the reward is your own KNOWLEDGE of your decision - and it WILL be appreciated greatly by like minded players. If you are trying to be 'good' but after being fucked over again and again YOU think 'no one cares, fuck it all, im going Pking" you have infact lost your humanity. I know this is extreamly 'ungamey' and for most gamers the need for some sort of ingame 'pat on the back' (that are more for braging rights than anything else) or 'rap on the knuckles' is manditory/neccecary so they can read the game world. I agree to some extent - there has to be some tools to interpret the world, but I think we have all been playing games long enough to get beyound the obvious." So from what I gather many players have resorted to SoS/PvP as means of survival because their trust has been crushed. And IMO trust is being so easilty crushed because of a lack universal and intuitive communication. "The best solution I've seen for PvP is to give murderers alcohol dependence. They get the shakes and need to drink some Whiskey to calm their nerves. It could be recurring or simply a few minutes after each murder. Relatively easy to implement, too." This is a simple solution, I value simplicity, but if you think that my proposed system wouldn't make people more 'imaginative' in their PvP actions I honestly don't see how you think this could. If I wanted anyone to take anything possitive from this idea I would want that to be the idea of a well implemented surrender animation. -
Good point about the repairing, hadn't considered it. I don't think they should be able to repair cars, fire rifles with ease or be able to take down zombies with a crow bar - but this is my opinion. I mean who knows what skill sets different children might have? Buff/debuffs could be added and subtracted to make a child as realistic or playable as you like - for me the key aspect is this idea is to create a 'realistic' and fun way to make players more involved with other aspects of the game other than KoS (for those that choose to) as well as bring the game to its logical end (if everyone is simply killing eachother).

Life/Death Calculator = intrinsic value/culture
hoik replied to hoik's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
haha thanks KnT47r, great pic. I would like to know if you (the readers) think it would be worth my effort to come up with more concrete math on this - i see people do generally like this idea but with no real input from the dev community (there seems to be very little in general if im frank about it) I dont want to waste my time :) . -
Yeah I knew the 'child' issue (agewise) would be a issue - but like I said, making them '18' would be a viable work around...very silly IMO but it is a game and they are played by younger children...though this game is definatly going to be 18+... Anyway lets focus on the mechanic. @FlashHawk4 "And I don't want to play as a child." Please expand this, why?? Is it the fact you resemble a 'child' or the buff/debuffs? Or something else? - Im not saying your choice is invalid I'd just like to understand it...

hoik replied to hoik's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Whaa?? - please have a good read and THINK about this before you answer. (thanks for the bump though :P ) -
@ Deviant "A child? Really? Playing as a child would be a joke. People would suicide to not be a child." Like I said, it would be temporary and 'opting' out is a legit choice. All Im hoping for is that at LEAST 1 in 10 people may like this - There are people out there who want a more in depth experience from this game, even if you dont think so. You're opinion is based on your playstyle (and therefore 100% valid) but please dont act like you are the voice of the community :( Personally I would find being a child very interesting - just because a child is geared towards teamplay doesn't mean that they have to be "good" - all the freedom and options (playstyle wise) are all still there. You could be a murderus little bastard till you assend to adulthood, but this would be HARD and less interesting(IMO) than trying to manipulate (children are VERY manipulative :) ) other players to help you out. So I don't see why you think it would be a joke, is it the fact that you character would LOOK like a child? Or is it the buff/debuff issue? Please clarify.
-
No NPC's - players will BE the child, they are not a companion like a dog. Glad you like it but I don't know if you really understand what Im driving at with this idea. Please re-read the post :) .

The ONLY Realistic Way to Prevent Deathmatching: Make DayZ a Living Hell
hoik replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I thoroughly disagree. That's like saying the solution to thwarting mexican drug cartels is "people should be nicer to each other". Individual attitude fits on a predictable curve based on the checks and balances inherent in the system. The solution to PvP is to give players more mechanisms to signal and demonstrate their friendliness' date=' and give more rewards for cooperation. [/quote'] I agree - this thread on communication = "humanity" by Scerun is very good: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=14619
