I've been wondering.... Why Chernarus?
ActionManZlt replied to CaptGentry's topic in New Player Discussion
Wait... Chernarus isn't on the planet and it's 'unknown' because it's not a real place, it's fictional... Arma was set in this made-up eastern European war-torn country (based on a part of Hungary), and DayZ is a mod for Arma. If Arma had have been set in Guatemala or Germany or New Zealand, then DayZ most likely would have been as well. -
Yeah, a whitelisted private hive would not be a bad idea to cut down on the likelihood of running into the hacking issue. If you know Chernarus like the back of your hand and want to be noobified like your friends, you could try one of the mods that changes the country (namalsk, takistan, etc).

How to play music through your mic?
ActionManZlt replied to maninthewall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I would join the crowd saying that the answer is "don't"... but I did piss myself at Herbert the Pervert playing DayZ: -
Remove it and also force on a small amount of the aiming deadzone setting to add more uncertainty to where the "centre of your screen" really is.

Also, I doubt your home internet connection would have the necessary bandwidth. Home DSL connections generally have <20MB/s of downstream bandwidth, but <1MB/s upstream bandwidth. When hosting a server, the upstream is generally more important than the downstream, so a typical home Internet connection isn't suited to it. If you've got a cat6 plug in your wall that goes straight into a 100/1000 fibre connection, then you're as well off as an expensive data centre server would be, but not many of us are that lucky. Hosting a server for something like COD is ok at home, because it doesn't use much bandwidth, but Arma2 servers use a ton of bandwidth. You can host around 4 players per 1MB/s of upstream bandwidth in Arma (or 2-8 depending on the mission).

I don't think there's been any announcements about the new physics from Arma 3 being ported to DayZ SA. The SA is being built in the TOH engine, which is just an evolution of the Arma 2 engine. After they released TOH, they demonstrated the Arma 3 engine using a brand new physics engine. TOH did introduce a new physics system for helicopters though... so the SA might have better helicopter controls? p.s. Complete offtopic-ery: There is no game called Armed Assault 2 or 3. Arma is a latin word (and many European languges) to do with arms/armour/soldiers/defense. The games are: Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (now ARMA: Cold War Assault) Operation Flashpoint: Elite ARMA: Armed Assault (A.K.A. ARMA: Combat Operations) ARMA 2 ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead / ARMA 2: Combined Operations ARMA 3

Bullet wounds are horribly unrealistic
ActionManZlt replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
To all you "A MAGAZINE IS NOT A CLIP" gun nuts: When writing in technical or essay-style English, the strict definitions of 'clip' and 'magazine' are useful and distinct. When talking in colloquialisms, slang, or on the Internet, speech is more malleable and it's up to your own rational mind to translate: "Yo, banga! You best split fore I load this clip up in my biatch piece here an pop a cap in yo skinny ass" Into: "My fellow businessman, I kindly request that you quickly take leave, lest my anger at your presence provoke me into inserting this magazine of bullets into my fine hand-gun and then using it to fire said bullets in the general direction of your posterior". This has been an Internet public service announcement. Have a nice day. -
Funny thing is that the Arma2 AK probably sounds a lot closer to a real one than any Hollywood or COD AK does, but we're not used to real AKs, so it sounds weak.

Try joining a few different servers... some produce worse FPS on the client than others.... -
Bullet wounds are horribly unrealistic
ActionManZlt replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
To which one? The game isn't hardcore enough, or you don't want 1-hit-kills from every gun? -
Bullet wounds are horribly unrealistic
ActionManZlt replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Seeing there's no surgeons at the Chernarus hospitals, a realistic sim means that being shot at all (esp with hollow-points) is basically a death sentence. Even if it was just a glancing hit in a limb from a FMJ round, it would still take your character weeks to recover, which I assume you'd want to be simulated as well.So... You're basically asking why every gun isn't a 1-shot-kill? Really? You really want to be nicked by a makarov and die? Isn't the game hardcore enough for you already? The emotional/social/moral side of the game would have to be GREATLY enhanced in order to still be fun in the presence of an every-bullet-kills rule-set. -
Fixed that for you. Made it just as readable.
-
I thought the military only used armor piercing rounds? There's some kind of treaty about it being inhumane to shoot at people with hollow points...

It's great to know that you're an expert in THINGS THAT HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.

Is DayZ Popularity declining?
ActionManZlt replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Everyone's waiting for SA... -
I just ran my dayzcommander.exe through these two multi-engine scanners, which include AVG: https://www.virustot...sis/1361234311/ http://r.virscan.org...5c4029770d.html ...and no viruses were found. It's entierly possible you've downloaded your DayZCommander from an unofficial source and it actually is infected with a trojan... Or that you've downloaded some other DayZ tool, which decided to infect DayZCommander specificially... Or that it's a false positive...

Should we be able to play as zombie?
ActionManZlt replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you wanted to, you could discourage killing by using this as a karma system. After your survivor dies, they become a zombie, and you can't start a new survivor until you've eaten as many brains as you had 'murders'. -
Should we be able to play as zombie?
ActionManZlt replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There is a very fun Arma 2 multiplayer mission-mod called Insurgency (you don't need any mods to play it, just Arma2:OA and the mission file) that works a bit like this. It's the US army in Takistan, and they've got to search for weapons caches all over the country. Whenever a US soldier ventures into a town, AI enemies spawn in the town (just like in DayZ). If you choose to play on the "enemy" team, then you can go into your map and see the locations of all AI characters. You can then click on one to take control of them, so that the US players actually have a bit of a challenge instead of the crappy default AI. The takistani characters are really weak and have crappy weapons compared the the US (e.g. enfield rifle VS themal scoped machine guns), but they spawn in very large numbers, like the zombies. They also only spawn in cities that are under attack, just like the zombies too, except if the US completely kills every takistani in a city, then then stop spawning from that point onwards. You should check it out if you can find a server that hosts this mission, because it's very fun with a lot of players. If it was done in the same way in DayZ, it could add a lot more unpredictability to zombie fights! -

hokay so i just had an idea
ActionManZlt replied to JamesMoore's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Maybe the majority of the population fled the country? If you were a pilot at the airport, you think you would've left by now. Plus if the pilot left their plane there, then one of the other 100,000 civilians trying to escape probably would've stolen it before you got there... -
Different Lighting abilities at Night
ActionManZlt replied to Lillouislim's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
These are already in the mod, but you need a weapon with an attached GL, and a flare round for it. Also, they only last for maybe a minute, not 5. Wasn't the gamma setting overridden by the server a long time ago (>6 months?), so that you can't use the gamma setting to give yourself night vision any more? -
As a person who works on game engines for a living, there is a simple technical fix for this:Take the same technology you use for casting shadows (this might need some work, because Arma's shadows are buggy...) and use this to cast a virtual "shadow" out from the player's head with a realistic frustum (FOV). Any dynamic objects (players, zombies, loot) that are outside the FOV/Frustum or are "in shadow" don't get drawn. Any objects that are "visible" to the "head shadow caster" are drawn. To make this clearer to the player, any terrain/buildings that are "in shadow" or out of the head's FOV can be drawn in greyscale, so the player is aware of where their character's vision ends. Bam. People with motion sickness can now enjoy your game in 3rd person without being accused of cheating, and people who think 3rd is more realistic (it does also give you more spatial awareness of your own body) or are simply more comfortable in that perspective can also do the same, without being able to see around corners and other unfairness. It is unfair (the above technique fixes that though), but note that Dslyexci does play Arma with a Track IR5, which gives him a huge advantage over 'regular' players -- in effect it gives you a much larger FOV by freely being able to move your view left/right at any time independently from your keyboard/mouse/gun/body, which is also one of the reasons for using 3rd person...

On a pitch black night, no amount of brightness fiddling will help you. Black * 100 still equals Black. The "Gamma" setting used to work wonders for getting "free night vision", but it was patched out a long time ago to stop people exploiting it.

Don't know what other people do, but when I got to (3), I'd either run, or hide, or take cover and use voice-chat. I've never shot on sight simply because I bumped into someone, simply because if I walk around a corner into a shotgun barrel, I'd also like to not have my intestines moved to the pavement. The only times I've killed people are when I've been shot/swung at, or guys that are totally geared up with high-powered rifles camping on hills shooting other people in towns (probably using the duplication hacks to play deathmatch)... The most interesting part of this game is trying to interact with other people. Why would you ruin that by instantly shooting everyone you see before they have a chance to do anything? I've been shot a lot of times while un-armed on the coast, right after spawning, and I just don't get it. What is fun about that? I don't lose anything really, I just respawn... and they've proved that they can play Arma against someone without a gun (woo, real test of skill there!). Why not just play Arma coop mission if you want to shoot people that are no match for your gear?
